    You're the first person I've heard talking about EDTA and difference between SLS and SLES, so thank you for that! Were I live in Poland we have mostly hard water, so I'm gonna look for EDTA in my clarifying shampoos from now on. Very helpful video, thanks a bunch again

    • @misspeach3755
      @misspeach3755 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Please don't. EDTA is not good for the environment and can also cause a lot of problems in combination with other chemicals as it is highly reactive. A simple vinegar rinse is much better and as effective.

    • @longyarn4288
      @longyarn4288 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with using an apple cider vinegar rinse. But you could also look on Amazon, or in a local plumbing store, for water filters that go just behind the shower head and the inner filter is change out about every three months. It's made a huge difference in my hair and for my skin! Just type in "shower filter" in the search bar and it'll bring up a whole range of options. Best of luck to you!

    THANK YOU!! This is so helpful! I am a fellow wavy new to Curly Girl Method and have been watching all your videos and they have ALL been so helpful but this is by far the most helpful! I am guilty of never looking at an ingredients list in my life before starting CG last month, so this is such a great guide to helping me understand what I am looking at!

    Sending you GOOOD VIIIIIIBES 😋 I'm super grateful that you share your knowledge and wisdom. In kinda new to CG and I am getting a little confused with how certain "holy grail" products for other people just do not work at all for my hair. My conclusion is I need more knowledge, and you have plenty of that! Good luck when you start school. You'll be great!

      After reading up on some of this I digged deeper into the silicone valley (hahaha puns) and realised one of my favourite blow drying creams that I had tossed aside actually contains an evaporating silicone and one that only attaches to damaged areas. So I might put it back into rotation for every once in a while. Again thanks a lot.

    Gosh there is so much to know about ingredients. I just got a box from Curl Kit in the mail and immediately wanted to know what is in the products. I decided to get out a marker and mark write on the bottle if there is something I want to remember, especially as I try to familiarize myself. I wrote "silicone" (bad kind) and "protein" on bottles for easy identification of things I want to be aware of. Thanks for helping me feel like understanding ingredients is POSSIBLE.

    That was an awesome video ! Thank you so very much for all the links you provided and your personnal explanations. This video is going to be in a playlist of mine to have it on hand and have a refresh course every time I'm on the hunt for a product. I noticed some products labelled as shampoo for example but as you said, the ingredients are 1 surfactant and a bunch of oil. Just begining my curly girl journey, I don't have the condidence yet to tell that label to be my cowash instead of a no poo ! I'm gonna get there !

    That is good to know about the edta in the suave clarifying! Another ingredients that has been under fire. That explains why I keep coming back to it, other stuff just doesn't work the same and we have hard water. I tried to get away from it because of the itchy m's but I seem to get away with it, I would never use it 2 wash days in a row. I actually like the ion hard water one also that you can get from Sally's but I use that for really stubborn build up because it's so HARSH. It's so exciting to start these new adventures. I am finishing my teaching degree right now and completely turned my life upside down by getting a new part time job too!

    Thanks for this video! I am only about a week into my CG journey and it is overwhelming! Your videos are definitely helping me to navigate it. I'm struggling with frizz right now. I don't know if I'm not using enough product or if I'm using too much. I tried clarifying and deep conditioning.. I got the best no-frizz with a tresemme gel I had but after watching this I realize it has silicones. Should I clarify again and try over with another product? I've got the devacurl light defining gel, but I'm thinking I didn't use enough of it maybe. I've tried several products but never seem to get a gel cast. Have you tried the Lus Love Your Curls products? I was seeing their ads all over facebook so I ordered it, but I'm still so new with application and diffusing that it is hard to tell which variables are having the most affect on my end result. Thanks again for your videos!

    How do you know your hair needs protein. After 2-3 weeks my hair gets stringing, looses curl. I do have hard water...do i need protein or clarify. After 3 months still finding bumps in the road i need to get around. Thank you for all you do, you are great.

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      3 months is nothing; you'll be learning for a long time, but it gets easier! It's impossible for me to know what your hair specifically needs, but you won't know until you try. At the 2-3 week mark might be a good time for you to try clarifying and doing a conditioning protein treatment (deva deep sea repair, curl junkie repair me). Make sure you're keeping notes!

    I love your videos! ❤️ I’ve been doing the CG method for a month now and it has been a journey! I’ve watched almost all of your videos, but haven’t seen anything on apple cider vinagre rinse. I am a 2b and have tried it once and it gave my hair some shine. Wanted to know if you’ve experimented with that and how often it’s safe to do. Thank you!

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, it's wonderful for temporarily closing your cuticle (its pH is usually 2-3, whereas our hair is 4.5) and adding shine, but it's really not for clarifying. Also, I'm truly not a DIY person.

      Refreshing takes time for your hair to get used to/accept. Just be sure to incorporate water or a water-based styler of some sort. Your hair sounds thirsty!

    Very impressed with your knowledge of all these crazy, hard to pronounce ingredients. Thank you for sharing your experiences and educating us in this curly journey. I am ready to sign up to do a course to learn more how to care for my hair, I’m debating between the map method and Atoya’s. I have 2b 3a hair, what is your recommendation? I don’t want to make a decision based on economics, I value your opinion. BTW love your hair, been following you for a while and love how it has really improved.

      Atoya's is half off right now, and it's more basic. CHA's is an ongoing series of videos, and I believe their focus is on how to hydrate the hair. I've done neither of them, but am so glad resources like them exist!

    I almost quit cg when my scalp broke out, itching, flaking, and scabbing over. It wasn't till I checked the ingredients of my no-poo and realized it contained "wheat protein", aka gluten! I have celiac disease. I don't know why I didn't think to check the product before buying it. I didn't realize it was someplace I needed to be concerned with gluten content. Anyway, I changed products. After a few weeks, my scalp healed and all has been good.

    How long after you start the curly girl method will the frizzy damage curls turn to smooth bouncy healthy curls?

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends on SO many things. For some, it's a couple weeks, for others (like me), it's 6 months or longer. I encourage everyone to give the method a real, solid, consistent try for 1 year before deciding to throw in the towel.

    What would you recommend as the best alternative to wheat? I’m having a heck of a time finding products that are both wheat/gluten free and coconut oil free.
    So far, only the Paul Mitchell curl envy, deva wavemaker, and plain aloe gel work for styling aides. Cleansing is limited to superleaves or Burt’s bees, as I can’t find suave products (or Aussie freeze gel) anywhere here!

    • @alysonlupo

    Perfect timing on your video!! I have wavy hair and shampoo every other day. I have three mass-market brands that I thought were gentle. They have about 3 cleansing ingredients listed. I also just discovered the curlsbot.com ingredient analyzer and in analyzing my shampoos they all contain Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate which curlsbot consider a 'clarifying cleanser' and rate as Curly Girl questionable. Any opinions?? Should I find a new shampoo- I am hesitant to cowash because I get buildup very easily and am prone to a very itchy scalp. Congrats on beauty school!!

    • @sigh_anna
      @sigh_anna 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like to wash my hair every couple of days as well. I could never cowash, I don't feel it is something I would be comfortable with, especially with fine, wavy hair.
      I have, however, used the info with curly girl type products to pick a shampoo that doesn't strip as much, and conditioners and stylers that don't build up as much. I feel like I have moved away from the very swingy cycle of over stripping/over coating my hair.
      Because of this my hair feels cleaner for longer, my roots feel clean and soft, instead of greasy.
      In a wash day I simply shampoo, condition, comb out and apply one styler. Air dry and tousle. I don't use any products to refresh my hair in between shampoos and I simply enjoy my hair in the natural state it wants to be in.
      Not at all how most curly girls are doing it lol.

      Shea moisture shampoos and conditioners are curl girl method approved, if you go to a big Wal-Mart you'd probably be able to find a travel size to try out to see if you like it

      I do not think curlsbot is correct on this. Clarifying shampoos contain c14-16 olefin sulfonate. A shampoo containing the ingredient you mentioned is still considered a low poo.

    Thanks for this video, I found it really interesting and informative. I have fine wavy/curly hair which needs good hold without adding weight. I’ve tried the Boucleme gel and Giovanni but they just aren’t working for me. Any other suggestions for products I can get in the UK?

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm positive you can get the Boucleme gel to work for you. Have you tried doing a double application? I'll be putting a video out on this soon. To make any gel have a stronger cast and hold, apply one coat before plopping, then another after removing your plop before diffusing. Of course, if it still doesn't work, Only Curls is another great brand in the UK, along with Trepadora. I also love Bounce Curl, and you can get that online.

      Hi again. Just wanted to report back that I have now found the love for the Bouclème gel. I think I just wasn’t applying enough of it to get a decent hold before. What loo poo and rinse out conditioner would you recommend pairing with the Bouclème gel? I’ve tried their co wash and conditioner, but they don’t have enough slip for me and I’d rather use a low poo. Thanks xx
