Kris, I’m a retired SWA pilot. I’ve got 32000+ hours over a 44 year career. I’ve got maybe 100 hours or so in a 55 Baron. I must say that your videos are amazing fun to watch. I loved the way you thread the needle between the gap in that line of thunderstorms. Your professionalism and expertise in flying your aircraft is a joy to watch. The way You made your decision to divert was right on. I read so many times about pilots getting dangerously low on fuel and sometimes running out of gas, just so they can get to their destination. Kim does a very good as a F/O. Keep up the good work.
My favorite parts were at 14:00 and 20:00. It's heartwarming when someone you love trusts you enough to sleep while you are flying. I've only experienced this while on long road trips. My stepfather taught me to fly when I was a teenager, but career and family took all my time. Would love to get my license one day, even at 58. Tailwinds are the best!
@@michaela9817 do it! I have gotten to know so many people who think they are “too old”, get it, and realize How much happier they were taking the leap!
Great videos, I am sorry we missed a chance to meet you while in Texas. We are just down the road from SA in Austin, Texas. Maybe next time. Keep the videos coming.
My dad was a CFI and later a designated FAA examiner (now retired). He lived and worked out of San Antonio. Very familiar with Stinson, and I flew past that airport just the other evening in MSFS 2020. Sent my dad some screenshots because I knew he would recognize that airport.
Made me homesick, SA is where I was born and raised. Went to A&P school at Stinson years ago. Nice job dealing with the wx. I'd been a little hesitant to head that far out over the water in my single engine Comanche but that's the advantage twins have. Great video.
I worked SSF tower back in 2003 before moving on over to Houston ARTCC. I work that airspace south and east o SAT and south and west of Houston TRACON. Anytime you're planning on flying south Texas give me a shout.
Great video Kris, for knots to mph, 1.15 miles per nautical mile (which you know). For knots to mph I move the decimal point over one, take that value, (0.1) then half that value (0.05) and add it to the original knot reading for mph. Sounds complicated explaining it, but for 200.0 knots, move the decimal to the left one space (20.0) then half that (10.0) add it all together. 200+20+10 = 230 mph. 230 knots => 230 + 23 + 11.5 = 264.5 mph. I put the 0.5 in for this example but generally I just round to the nearest whole number. You can multiply it out in your head too, but that can be too much distraction for me when I'm flying. It's useless info for flying, but nice to be able to do for passengers who ask. Take care.
You 2 do have friends everywhere, even here in Brasil! 20 hours straight doing sound/lighting and video in an event..... been there done that kkkkkk Great video Kris and Kim!

Plus the EPIC shots of flying right next to those updrafts! That was wild! Just be aware that moving to the SAT area puts you in danger of mountain cedar allergies. Some people take upwards of 20 yrs to develop symptoms. My wife lost some of her hearing due to regular sinus infections. Some people have no trouble at all.
Awesome video, as always. Loved to see you thread the gaps in the weather and all the hear the help the controllers were offering. Night landing was great. I'm planning a flight to Texas/San Antonio in a month or two. If you had one recommendation of a place to see, what would it be?

Seaworld and Fiesta Texas(six flags) out west of town. Would strongly suggest flying into 5C1 in Boerne. Enterprise in Boerne will deliver a rental car to the field at no charge, friendly folks at the airport.
I agree with the recs above. I have done the mission tour and we found that it got a bit redundant. Definitely the Alamo and the Riverwalk. If you’re a golfer La Cantera is a nice resort and spa and The Texas Open has been played on one of the courses in the past.

Victoria, TX :o) That's where I did almost 30 hours of instrument training, you were flying in my home stomping grounds but I was probably "up here" (KFMN). It's interesting to watch you navigate the storms. Anticipating the growth and staying visual. If you were over Louisiana you should have said dem videos or doz videos. Night landing... that's why for me, night time is a no go without an instrument rating. That soup you got into when you landed happens in TX quite a bit. But it usually burns off by 10. 75W needs a roll bar and some big fog lights. Put some smiley face covers on them too (oops... retro back to the 80's and jacked up trucks)
Nerve-wracking, but you stayed calm and made good decisions. Wondering, though, why you didn't climb to 13 or 15K, which looked like it would have put you above most of the mess? I'm assuming the Baron isn't pressurized, but do you have oxygen on board?

Not sure what type of flying you want to do, but take a look into the private pilot glider rating. You get to fly motor gliders. No medical required, fly as high as 17999, you can fly internationally( rating is recognized internationally) and if you are flying the appropriately lit aircraft, at night. Fastest way to get yourself into the air. The glider rating has very few restrictions when compared to the sport pilot certificate. Check out the Pipistrel sinus, this is an airplane and glider.
