  • This guide will show you how to copy roms to your RetroPie installation without needing a network connection. I used RetroPie 3 beta 4.
    This will use a standard USB thumb drive.

    For whatever reason I couldn't get my raspberry pi to connect to my network and was struggling to transfer my roms....but now it is working great thanks to a USB thumb drive and this video!! Thank you very much for taking the time to explain this.

    Thanks! My USB stick didn't have the "retropie" folder in root, so the PI was not creating the directory structure. The other tutorial neglected to mention that step (surprise surprise.)

    • @pb4078
      @pb4078 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Steve Capone yes you can! This is particularly useful if you have a smaller USB stick that cannot hold your entire ROM set, you can do them in batches. since the pi doesn't really indicate whether or not there is file transfer going on, it helps to have a USB stick within led to show file activity. If you don't have that, just leave the stick inserted for several minutes. you will probably need to restart emulationstation after the file transfer is complete to show the new ROMs that have been copied over.

    • @pb4078
      @pb4078 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Steve Capone that I'm not sure about. I use a PS2 controller, but I have it plugged into a USB port. I just purchased a wireless wi-fi USB dongle to use with the Raspberry Pi 2, and it worked flawlessly. I just plugged it in, and the system recognized it by default. so I have Wi-Fi capability on my pi, but I unfortunately do not have a wireless game controller to test it with come out so I can't answer that. I'm sure if there's a will there's a way however. Good luck on that!

      +F1000X Hi. Its best to transfer the .bin and .cue if it has multiple tracks in the disc.

    • @scorpius26

      you simply can't navigate to the roms folders, because you only can access the boot partition of the sd card. the system partition is not readable for a PC

    • @mikekazz5353

      I'll agree with Vladimir Vlad, because I'm still new and writing code or does seems like Linux might be better with stuff with that, but simple stuff like drag and drop files would be easier with Mac and PC and a thumb drive, like I said still new and my thumb drive got formatted and I'm having trouble get the flash drive to work again.

    • @Floob

    Couple of questions I have filled my USB flash drive with about 7gb of Roms all in their correct folders, I've plugged into EmuStation I have no LED on this flash drive, how do I tell it's safe to unplug ! i.e. all Roms are copied ! I don't want to press f4 to refresh just yet, also are the files copied or moved from my flash drive, i may want to do this again on anther pi ! Thanks

    • @null2846
      @null2846 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i have no idea, either. There really needs to be some kind of on-screen notification that lets you know, or at least a way to figure out, for those with USB sticks with no light.

    • @null2846
      @null2846 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, I think that if you look at the green light on the Pi itself, you'll see that there's no activity. Then, plug the USB stick in, and you should see the green light turn on, or at least blink (mostly on). As soon as activity stops or goes back to how it was before you plugged the stick in, you should be good.
      Although I can't account for if there's background programs making use of the "hard drive" on the Pi.

    i have a usb-stick with 10gb of roms. i was too impatient and unplugged it too early. now i have only two emulators with some games. can i just plug it in again and retropie will continue copying the rest? and another (possibly very stupid) question: is retropie copying the games on to the sd-card?

    • @Floob
      @Floob  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Khoa Le Hi. Yes, I think that it should continue with the copy job. Yes thats right the process copies the roms to the SD card, so you need to have enough space on the card.

      +Floob it´s still so strange. i wiped the raspberry and the usb-stick. reinstalled retropie on the raspberry and copied the roms to usb-stick. on the raspberry i extended the space to the sd-card. i put the usb-stick into the raspberry and left it overnight, hoping that it would copy the whole 10gb of games to the raspberry. but it only copied about 2gb (actually two emulators with games). what am i doing wrong?

    • @Floob
      @Floob  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Khoa Le How big is your card? If you type "df -h" does it show it has at least 10GB free? Try copying one directory of roms across at a time to see where it fails.

    • @DuskGaming
      @DuskGaming 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes because .exe files are for Windows.

    • @lmcgregoruk
      @lmcgregoruk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      roms shouldn't have the extension .exe The only thing I can think of is that those .exe files are actually emulators with a self contained rom(s). I know Sega used Kgen for one of their old compilations.

    I have a question and hopefully I don't sound like a complete idiot, but can I put my emulators on the rasberry only and have the games only on a usb thumb drive and use that way? Basically I want the thumb drive to act like a game cartridge and the Pi as a console so to speak.

    got problems with my USB key ! and need help ....
    first I instal retropie as they suggest (retropie.org.uk/download) and start read the "first installation"
    I choose the right version of retropie ( I own a raspberry pi 3, the last one)
    the file was in .img and instal on my microSD with etcher and them boot it up into my raspberrypi
    I update my raspberry pi and instal/update packages (it said version: 4.3.8) and set the "usbromservice" to enable
    them I put my USB key into the pie (with the new file "retropie" inside), wait until the little green light stop blinking them remove my USB key
    From there, problems start ... when I plug the USB key back into my laptop (MacBook Pro) it said : "UNTITLED" can not be opened because the original element can not be found. And I can't open my USB key anymore. I can't even format it...
    On the pie, I only update it, update package and do basic instal ... that it ... Of course as I said, I previously put my USB key one time into the pie with the "retropie" file ...
    So my question: why my USB key doesn't work anymore? and why I can't have access to my key? and add the "roms" file inside the "retropie" file?

    nothing in the retropie folder :(

    This was eventually useful but the organization is all out of whack. This would have been much more useful if you'd started with "put your roms in a folder called retropie and then plug them into your raspberry" and *then* gone into how to enable USB transfers in Retropie if it's not working and all the other details.

      +Adam Bull The most common reason to use USB transfer is if you have no means of networking the Pi.

    You could have made your point in 1 minute and yet you kept blabbering about stuff that isn't about "copying roms using usb" and waste everyone's time. Really.. This video could have been just 1 minute.

      +Cagan Celik All my videos are me blabbering :) I do it so everyone can pick it up. If you have basic PC knowledge already you are better off at the wiki here:

      +Cagan Celik And then he would need to answer 100 questions in the comments, when people have missed something or just didn't understand or messed up something accidentally. RetroPie forum and TH-cam comments are full of those threads, where someone tutors very vaguely and then the thread is full of "why doesn't this work?! PLZ HALP!!!" Better do it properly and teach people what the f**k they're actually doing so they don't end up having more problems than help from the tutorial.

    • @jarkokoo
      @jarkokoo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Floob Keep up the good work! You're doing these tutorials just like they should be done: explaining what one is actually doing. If some people don't have 12 minutes to spend, that's their loss. :) To be frank: in that case they shouldn't be using RPi, or any Linux based system, to begin with. :P
