I just imported the full non-merged 0.252 romset to launchbox without any duplicates/versions. I then choice with genres to not include in the import options. After importing I sorted all the roms with a star score of below 3 plus all the roms without less then 4 reviews and deleted them. I then exported my filterer romset and importered again after deleting all roms. Worked like a charm!
This guy's video's are really good. He goes into great detail. If it's not working, it's likely you missed a step. I have been going back to parts of the video multiple times. I got 202 working roms in mame which is better than I have ever done myself. Also tip if you play test your roms in retropie any non working roms put in the arcade folder. Then run fb neo as a default on those rom sets fb neo will tell you exactly what you are missing.
Awesome video. I also watch your other amazing video on Merged and Unmerged Rom Sets. Thanks so much for taking the time to make these videos. You couldn't have explained it any better.
Thats a really good point. You can use the same process to pass to a compatible front end to filter the results instead of removing any roms physically.
Might you know which export option will be correct if using a mac rather than windows? Your video is excellent but my mac won't run the .bat or windows .cmd. Many thanks
Are you using a full merged rom set in the video or Non merged set? I did this process with a full merged set but its importing 2900 games out of the 1400 roms. BTW im using LB frontend. Im a bit stumped.
Thanks! This explains a lot! Any way to filter by region and hacked clones to reduce the amount of duplicates? For example, don't need the European or Japanese ROMs, just US ones, and don't want hacked roms like Street Fighter rainbow edition.
I got a question, if i wanna filter a MAME2003Plus reference Non-Merged romset (0.78+), how can i include the "Roll-back" versions of the games of future versions that this version supports (according to retropie wiki)
You get the .dat file that relates to the exact version of Mame2002Plus that you have and you rebuild your set using 0.78+ as well as the latest rollback romset available.
Awesome Q: I've trimmed down my unmerged romset .262 to around 2k games with future updates (.262 to .263, etc) do I need to just download the update (my roms are unmerged but it seems all updates on progetto are merged) then I download the update DAT file, run the update & dat thru clrmame and rebuild to my current romset directory? I know it will look to update 'every' game in .263, but it will only find my filtered romset. Will it simply update my romset and ignore the rest? I also know there's a dat file export at arcadeitalia for clrmame maybe I can go that route and create a DAT file of only my filtered games? Hope the q makes sense. Right now when I want to update I'm just doing a clean install from unmerged scratch using clr mame & the full set dat (I know about half of what I need to know, so forgive if the question is witless)
I'm deciding between mame, mameui & arcade64 playing around with all 3. Also messing w HBMame on a separate note. I have all 3 (4 w hb) latest versions up and running. I have Hyperspin as well as a front end but I'll work on configuring that after i've mastered my back end mame emulator. I'll look at video ty for reply you've been a big help@@Floob
I only really use 1G1R for consoles. I'm not sure how I'd use it for arcade romsets, I mean I wouldn't want to, say, just use Japanese clones, I would want to pick and choose on a per game basis. That's why I broadly go for parents, then manually swap in a clone if I want it. You may want to use pre-filtered lists instead, like all-killer no-filler.
@Floob yeah i mainly wanted to only have 1 game for the ones I wanted and only keep the games that are in English. Unfortunately some of the clones are the English versions
So we change the path here to where the romsets are: th-cam.com/video/NoK7SBuxSEw/w-d-xo.html because the script uses that to know where they are - it doesnt care where the actual mame executables are as its just moving files, not running anything.
Hi Floob, how different is the results of this compared to the 'How to convert a 118GB MAME ROM set down to 11.4GB removing clones, duplicates and unplayable games.' using LaunchBox video here: th-cam.com/video/GZfoOTckURA/w-d-xo.html - are there different pros/cons?
Hi. I think if you have Windows and are able to run Launchbox, its a great way to achieve this sort of result. This video is more geared to being front-end and OS independent, so trying to cover those on MacOS, or Linux distributions like the Raspberry Pi. The output on ArcadeItalia export allows Linux style .sh files which I guess I should have covered as well. I also like the sheer amount of config options on ArcadeItalia down to the subcategory of game and control options etc.. That said, I should try out Launchbox on my windows machine, it does look good. I think some front-ends are pretty flexible about what they can hide, so purely filtering results in some (instead of removing the physical file entirely) can be an option, but where the front-end doesnt allow that or the user doesnt want to spend time tweaking the front end, getting a playable set of files is a good alternative as shown in these Launchbox/ArcadeItalia videos. I think reducing the diskspace used can be useful in not just the efficiency but avoiding needing to scrape games (and store the metadata) you will never play.
@@Floob i tried the whole launchbox methos, several times, with a split fairly new mame romset....what i got was a trimmed-down folder, which was exciting....until i tried to play the games--over half of them at least became unplayable because of the wonderful 'missing files' situation....still not sure why it does this or how to get around it.....
@@wellofcire Hi. I dont use launchbox, but before you filter down a collection I would make sure its working first. if you trim a split set then none of the clones will work without a parent. This video may help you rebuild a solid set first: th-cam.com/video/wyonq8TQdYo/w-d-xo.html
@@Floob Heya....yeah I know what you mean....but the romset is totally fine and good as it is originally, and i even chose to KEEP all the clones but it still gave the same wacky result.....i'll need to try your recommended sites next....just taking a break because it gets exasperating
Could we have some tutorials that are done by people who are proficient with the programs they are explaining? And stop wiggling the mouse & clicking on things that you aren't explaining.
A very powerful tool to trim down rom collections - most people only play around 500 games if that many out of the 12,000+ rubbish romsets out there!

this sounds like a great idea!
Pure gold! Been struggling for a week with this. Much appreciated!
You have no idea how long I've needed a video like this. Thank you so very much!!!
Thanks for this. Currently overwhelmed by large arcade romsets and was looking for a curated list for batocera, this is perfect :)
This is fabulous. I planned to take a whole day and filter out the roms manually. This makes it so much easier

Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad its been helpful.
Great video. Just a little helpful hint, you can drag your bat file into the DOS (cmd) windows and press rather than typing the file name out.
you are a godsend my good man! THANK YOU
What a good and simple to understand video. thank you.
Great video! Helped me cleaned out my ROM Collection :)
excellent tutorial! Worked like a charm. Big thanks.
Thanks, this really helped. For the first time I'm excited to play arcade on a retroid. because I have 300 instead of 8000.
I use a lot this site, is amazingf it the options that have and for extracted direct to many frontends too. Great video!

It’s an awesome website
Do they have Is anything that will work on Batocera? I could not get it to work because that's Linux and I downloaded the windows version
Great stuff but you still have that random audio static happening
Thanks, I'll have to check out if thats my software or mic causing the issue.
@@Floob reminds me mk2 and 3 on mame.....; l
Thank you so much, man. Can I use this method with FBA or FBNeo rom sets too?
It just relies on the mame filename/rom conventions, so should be ok for FBNeo as far as I remember.
Awesome

Instead of removing just clones, can you make a video how to get this down to 1g1r then sort out the ones you don't want?

This is where you might want to look at removing clones.Yes, the site shown in the video can remove clones.
