Schwanengesang ("Swan Song") by Schubert with English Subtitles arr.Liszt Valentina Lisitsa

  • These are the very last songs that Schubert wrote before his death at age of 31.
Few other pieces exist that would match the depth of despair, depression and hopelessness in this music. It is futile to describe what's happening in this music , what is the story... The subtitled lyrics are eloquent enough.
If you need the text in languages other than original German and English, here is a link :
    www.recmusic.or...
I wish I could say "Enjoy" but this is NOT music for enjoyment but rather for catharsis. Good luck on your journey.

There has always been a special place in my heart for Schubert's music. I had known about his long illness, but for some reason had never heard Schwanengesang until now. Valentina, your wonderful interpretation of Schubert's music, together with the lyrics, expresses the incredible depths of his physical and emotional suffering. It is the first time in my life that the music of this brilliant composer has made me weep. You are truly amazing!

Merci.

How can I not enjoy your performance? I'm in awe. The first time I heard these pieces was very recently, with the new release of Harmonia Mundi's "Mein Traum," performed by Pygmalion Orchestra under Raphaël Pichon along with Stéphane Degout (baritone) and a phenomenal production (video + sound). I immediately succumbed to these masterpieces. Then, as I always do, I dug and dug more to learn the history of Schubert's Schwanengesang, and voila, I reached your TH-cam site. The big difference between both interpretations, yours and Pygmalion's, yours in particular, is your hands/piano keys and your passion was able to narrate, scream, and express the desolation and agony surrounding Schubert's last composition. Thanks.

These melodies seem to bring us into Schubert's fast fading health, there are simple elements but some seem regretful. There are some sweet messages, mixed with melancholy. I think that overall Schubert had some stoicism, and some sorrow. He doesn't seem angry, but rather bitter and weary. There is also a contrasted minor briskness at some points. Der Atlas, Atlas seems to carry Schubert's anger. Der Doppelgänger is a Requiem, lost hope, he realizes this is his last bit of living in this world, but since it resolves in a major chord, it is not entirely an unrelieved depression. I think having observed my father learn of his terminal state, that there is an element of shock and resignation, and the recognition that these are the last musical compositions he will write. Thankyou Valentina for taking the time to bring these to us so well interpreted.

The collection was named by its first publisher Tobias Haslinger, presumably wishing to present it as Schubert's final musical testament to the world. Unlike the earlier Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise, it contains settings of three poets, Ludwig Rellstab (1799-1860), Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) and Johann Gabriel Seidl (1804-1875). - quoted from Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwanengesang

    • @treesny
      @treesny 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you for calling it (correctly) a collection and not a cycle. The publisher grouped the songs by poet: the seven by Rellstab, then the six by Heine and finally the single one by Seidl. Although Liszt retained all of Schubert's original keys in his transcriptions, he drastically reordered the songs: #11, 10, 5, 12, 7, 6, 4, 9, 3, 1, 8, 13, 14, 2; he also provided a direct link between #9 (Ihr Bild) and #3 (Frühlingssehnsucht). The published edition of Schubert's voice-and-piano originals opens and closes with fairly upbeat songs - Liebesbotschaft and Die Taubenpost respectively - while Liszt bookends his "cycle" with two very dark ones, Die Stadt and Kriegers Ahnung. Thus Liszt casts a very different light on these extraordinary pieces.

We have lots of people on the stage today who can play pieces like this, and very well too. But really, you make so much out of this with the expression and color, it stops being a banal and rather boring melodrama.
You do this kind of thing better than anybody.

    Messaggio d'amore
Language: Italian (Italiano) after the German (Deutsch)
    Ruscello che mormori,
    così argenteo e chiaro,
    ti affretti verso l'amata,
    così lieto e svelto?
    Ah, fido ruscelletto,
    sii il mio messaggero,
    portale i saluti
    da me che sono lontano.
    Tutti i suoi fiori
    coltivati nel giardino,
    che con tanta grazia
    porta al petto,
    e le sue rose
    ardenti di porpora,
    ruscelletto, ravvivali
    con la tua acqua fresca.
    Quando lei sta slla riva,
    immersa nei sogni,
    e pensando a me
    inchina la testa,
    conforta la mia dolcezza
    con sguardo amico,
    dille che il suo amato
    tornerà presto.
    Quandol sole se ne va
    nella sua luce rossastra,
    culla la mia cara,
    falla addormentare.
    Mormora per lei
    dolcemente, in pace,
    sussurrado guida
    i suoi sogni verso l'amore.

When I am laid in earth [.....] remember me, but,ah! forget my fate ..." (Lamento de Didon) "arrangé" ainsi...Autant "arranger"La Joconde avec des ajouts"peinturluresques".

Though Schubert was ill off and on for the last 6 years of his life, he also enjoyed periods of good health, traveled, gave a concert of his works, etc. And evidence suggests the last song he ever wrote is the sweet and fairly cheerful "Die Taubenpost".
For all the sadness and disappointment in his life, Schubert also experienced a lot of joy from music, nature and his friends. At the time of his death, he'd started counterpoint lessons and was looking forward to more composing.

she played Für Elise as an encore and that is one overly famous, repetitive and overused piece but what's amazing is that she gave it a fresh new twist to something that has been played over and over, so I don't see why she couldn't give it a try with a very simple piece and see what happens...

i think it would be a great song to play, but maybe her skills would be ''wasted'' in that song, I mean, she is one of the few people who can play classics the way she does it, and i would rather listen to this than some younger songs. Try to see it my way, if she start doing that kind of songs (again they are beautiful I love Competine) she could atract the wrong side of youtube and some people could ask her to play rudolph or merry christmas in a couple of mounts. It would be an insult.

I'm sorry, but I really don't agree. It's always a good idea to play more contemporary pieces (which she does), but not something like you suggested. "Comptine d'un autre ete : L'apres midi" is overplayed, very easy, and--in my opinion--boring to play and to hear. It's nice, but repetitive and short. If you want to listen to that, watch the movie. But there are infinitely more interesting contemporary pieces that aren't as famous but many, many times more beautiful.

As a singer (who also adore Schubert as much), I reckon that I'd prefer this record over any other modern performances...
    The transcription is ingenious.

    Valentina..
Simply delightful watching you play/dance with eyes angelically closed as the Schwanengesang flows off your fingers as if from a celestial music fountain. I've expressed this sentiment in other venues before....Are you the rebirth of Lubka Kolessa? Just wondering......

Valentina, thank you very much for sharing this with us.
Up to now you've made 318 people happy, tipping a tear, holding their breath etc.
Playing music is touching people: you have the right touch, wether you play Liszt, Beethoven, Rachmaninov or Schubert, you know how to express them all, and that's your gift.

Thanks for adding the subtitles. :) I've listened to this cycle many times in its original form, and although I've read a little bit of the poetry behind some of them, this makes it a lot easier, as usually the poor translations I find don't really fit well with the original German songs - but this seems to work well. :) Thanks Val!
