SELF LANDING a FOIL KITE under 20+ knots - Flysurfer Soul 6m - Kitemare

  • I tried to backstall it at ther edge of the wind window walking upwind but the wind flipped the trailing edge making the kite to fly inverted still pulling me straight downwind.
So I had to make sure the safety line was hooket to my leash and release the bar to flag out the kite on 20-25 knots.

    - So close! If you had known your mistake and what to look for you could have saved it.
    - You oversheeted the stall on the landing with the steering lines. You can see this when the bottom of the kite starts to fold up (at 0:42 you can just see the dark top canopy start to be visible). From there the kite tries to fly down (effectively it skids towards you slightly until it flips over and then flies up into the sky).
    - If you had let the back lines out a bit (say 10cm or so) it would have settled again and would have been a text book landing. Look at 0:40 and you can see how much back line you have pulled in. You needed to pull in more line than normal because you didn't let the trim out on the front lines so I'm guessing the normal level of back line tension didn't stall the kite and because of this and you were trying to compensate by pulling.
Good reactions though checking downwind to make sure its safe to release the QR!

Thank you so much for your precise observation on this. In fact that was the problem that made the kite flip and raise from the ground. I will practice again to feel the exact stall needed. This is one of the reasons I post my videos. To always learn from mistakes and keep progressing.

@@willembeltman yes you are right. The safety system is always the safest way. I was trying to land it and walk through lines to secure it without messing with bridles. It didn’t work as I expected.

In 20kts winds walking towards the kite laying on it's trailing edge in the power zone is like disarming a bomb. I either pull the back lines more than needed or just flag it out (obviously if there is no one to help me out).

the savest way is mostly to qr on the water get to your bar, fix the savety, roll up and pack your indeed now very wet kite.
who wants that but i assume it to be the safest way when alone.
second safest in my mind is using an anchor, what needs preparation, but its what i prefer, although you shoudnt go on a session alone, dont you? ;)
most things i know are already said. landing foil kites, alone in strong winds is a uncomfortable situation.
try to actively walk downwind when the kite touches the ground in a beginning backstall.
      thanks4urVideo

This is a great video and looks like a lot of my self-landing attempts! I disagree with all the people calling to pull the safety. At least in my experience flying these kites for a few years, the safety results in completely unpredictable chaos and the kite will never settle down peacefully with the safety pulled. And you lose all means of controlling the kite. I posted about this on the Flysurfer facebook community and the response was literally "Yeah you should never pull the safety..." Any experiences different than mine?

      John
I tried several methods to self land my 15sqm soul when wind is too strong for a nice stall in front of me, and when no one can help me of course.
The best technique for me is to move down on the side, but on the side of your safety line connection, then let go the bar and release the safety , and when done immediately run sideway upwind of your kite and possibly pull as much as you can of the safety line. This will avoid too much move of your kite from its position to the power zone position as you will make by yourself running a part of this move, and will avoid too much move of your kite downwind as you will reduce this distance by the pull of the safety line. But at least with this option, the power will be killed and the kite may just flap one or 2 times before you will reach it! I would be interest by your other safest method!
Do you have a vid of your prefered option in strong wind?

@@nicolasboudet9302 thank you so much for writing all this, I will definitely try it. I also have a 15M soul and it can be very scary when the wind picks up and suddenly there is nobody to help you land! I have always done kite all the way down at the side of the window, then stall, then run upwind and the pray :) Now I have a few Peak4 kites which can land themselves with the BSafe system, and I will try to use these kites when I am totally alone and use the Souls when there are people who can help. But always love to learn more from the community. Thanks again

@@johnkramer2061 indeed this method is not as safe as having someone to help but when wind suddenly picks up due to a big rain coming, most people run out of the beach and you cannot stay indefinitely with your kite in the air🥶
Depending of wind direction (side, on…) and your beach size and its hazards, it is useful to decide on which side you will have to land , and you may have to reverse your 2 front lines in order to have the safety connected on the down one . If you have plenty of room as on the vid, you can proceed without running to the wind but the kite will move to the wind direction anyway. If you move your kite down to the opposite side of your safety line, the kite will fastly travel to the opposite direction before moving back to the middle which could be very scary and make several turn , fastly flapping… Let me know if your tries are conclusive, but personally I am no more scared to go with my 15sqm by 18+kts. I must admit that over 20kts it would be wise to choose another size, but the principle would be the same😎

The Flysurfer safeties are a last resort. I pulled my safety ONCE on my old Speed 3 Deluxe because I thought it would be as simple to relaunch as my PL Charger 2 from safety. WRONG. After pulling the safety that first time on that kite, I have never used it since. I am not even running a safety line on my FS kite right now and only intend to use the quick disconnect if in danger. The safety on these closed cell foils is completely unpredictable and always ends up with a tangled mess at best, and a self-destructing, deathlooping monster kite that is unsafe to approach to pack down at worst.

I just fly it two times, one with 6kt of wind (that was easy/funny) and the second with 19kt (that isn't funny/easy, it was really stupid thing)
