Kuma's backstory really hit me hard but 1102 was the hardest. The day I read chapter 1102 was the day of my late Grandfather's funeral. I read it hours after the funeral, wanting to take my mind off everything but it only brought everything back. When My uncle during the funeral gave the eulogy, he talked about how my grandfather loved to use his hands to serve and help others. Kuma also used his hands to serve and help others. Chapter 1102 really made me realize how much alike Kuma and my grandfather were. Vegapunk's words before taking Kuma's humanity really broke me down. This man was really touched by Kuma's life. Vegapunk may not make the best decisions but he has a good heart.
I’m sorry for your loss brother, remember Hiriluk’s words “A man dies when he is forgotten!” Treasure him in your heart and follow his good example, he lives on with you ❤
We're back in business! I definitely struggled talking through this video but it's fine 😂 I hope you enjoy the video! Kuma's backstory was GUT WRENCHING!
21:27 Ginny is not Iva's sister, it's like Yosaku and Johnny addressing Zoro as brother (and later on, everyone else in the East Blue crew, including brother Nami). Addressing people with a family member "role" is common in Japanese culture. A kid older than you or a teenager/young adult is an older sibling, and middle-aged man is an uncle (that's how Sentomaru addresses Kizaru), a middle-aged woman should be an aunt, but since calling a woman middle-aged everywhere in the world can lead to your death, they are often addressed as "older sister" as well, an old person is a grandparent. Ivankov and Ginny are not blood related, and they are not sworn siblings (that we know of) either.
One highlight of Kuma's backstory for me was that we were this close to having Iva eat the DF that went to Kaido. Some of the fan mashups of what that could look like are hilarious.
3:40 Official releases come out on Sundays, same day Weekly Shonen Jump comes out physically in Japan, but there are scanlations (fanmade translations made from actual scans of the physical magazine) usually coming out around 3-4 days earlier. Shueisha delivers the physical copies of the magazine to the stores like a week in advanced, people at those stores scan them and upload them to the internet, and people across the world use those raw scans, clean them, redraw them when needed, and translate them in a couple of days.
And you were saying near the start of the arc was rough and thought that would be the worst part lol. In the flashbacks we see Kuma visit all the places he sends the Straw hats. Now makes sense how he knew of them and his reason behind what he did. This story and how Bonny learns this is an art. Also when Saturn arrives it’s in a summoning circle - not too ominous at all
With regards to weekly releases, we usually get 3 weeks in a row then 1 off (for Oda's health after he had some issues). Now there are sometimes other breaks (national holidays and such) but I think we're good on those for now, so I expect there'll be chapter 1109 at the end of next week and then a week off.
The bit I noticed about Luffy in Gear 5 when he fought Kizaru is that he landed one hit. One. Every attack before then (baring the throw at the start) was against a hologram or was a miss, and he tanked a lot of hits, but it took one punch to knock an Admiral down and make him not really able to get back up for a bit. Kaido really was a tank of a man.
The Celestial Dragon hunting competition was reminiscent of Doffy's bird cage competition and points system. Copying his Celestial ancestors. There are questions about whether Gaimon's empty island, other than animals, and the empty treasure chests may have been from a previous Celestial native hunt.
Kuma's life is pure light and pain, and Oda outdid himself AGAIN. I don't know how, but he keeps doing it. But what YOU should keep doing is resting so that you get better
18:22 And this is proof: Reading One Piece turns you into a masochist, you want to re-experience the pain so that it hurts more. Thank you, Oda, for making us seek pain. Pure Pavlovian conditioning so you can keep feeding on our tears
Reading this week to week was wild. So many reaction/review videos about his backstory and so many emotions! I wish you a speedy recovery physically and emotionally
It's a shame you didn't read just one chapter more. There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.
several moments were recontextualized after the kuma flashback. 1. Zoro's sacrifice in thriller bark 2. Separation of the Mugiwaras in the Sabaody archipelago 3. Ivankov crying because Kuma didn't recognize him in Marineford 4. Even Bonney's name took on a new meaning
I'm SO glad you finally got through this! particularly because I wanna request you to watch episode 380, Brooke's backstory, specifically the scene with his captain now that you have some context. Really take in the scene and the look of things. It's another Oda sleeper hit where something was seeded so early in the story we can scarcely believe it.
Just PAIN! Pure concentrated pain from Oda. So many people were begging Oda to finally reveal things about Kuma and his backstory. And a few chapters into the backstory those same people were like: "Oda stop, please! We can't take it anymore."😂
This is why I never want to hold any negative biases against characters Oda hasn't explored much yet. You never know when Oda will drop a backstory that tears your heart.
It is absolutely insane that after everything we’ve seen in one piece so far somehow Oda still managed to give us an even sadder backstory than anything we’ve seen before
And I have a feeling this isn't even the saddest we'll ever get. The Void Century flashback I feel will be the worst of all. Imagine seeing Joyboy writing the apology letter to Posidon back then? I feel a sad scene come from that alone. Not to mention the atrocities that must've happened back then
This made me hate celestial dragons and elders with such passion that I got mad at Garp and Roger for stopping Rocks I would like to see you deep dive into things that you would like to talk more about in OP, though you are almost caught up, so if you like, you can make those videos on break weeks
Don't sweat it, that you couldn't upload in a while Ficitonal Scholar (lol, it's weird to address you this way, but I don't know your name or any better nickname)! We're all human, and you fell sick, which happens. It's not worth pushing yourself harder or feeling guilty about not uploading as you planned because of that. Hope you're doing better. Anyways, I was still pleasantly surprised to see this video in my inbox. ^^ By now, I have to ask myself: Is it sadistic to enjoy watching other people suffering while reading through this section the way I did? xD
Kizaru acts mighty suspicious in places this arc. I like it - much more interesting to a story than plain evil, and this is already an arc of betrayal and misdirection. 14:58 see, this flashback bit was interesting to me, because it very much looks like Kizaru is aware of Nika because of it. I wonder if he knows any other secrets.
also unsure if anyones pointed it out but long ago in an sbs where oda stated the ages of all of the worst generation and for bonney he put her age as "24 supposedly" and mentioned that due to her powers her age is an estimation and that always stuck with me because it was as if he didnt know the age of the character and she had a life of her own like he wasnt writing her but i also knew he wouldnt put it in there if it didnt mean anything so i had just assumed her age was not 24 this whole time so it was crazy to see a theory i hadnt really heard many people talk about come true
Welcome back, glad you're better! Regarding reading weekly, a couple of thoughts: - English One Piece chapters release as Scans on Thursday Evening (CET) as well as officials/VIZ on Sunday (5PM CET I think?) - Pro/Con Scans, specifically from "TCB": Very good quality translations (I often prefer them to officials), you get more views on videos/live reads posting them early, but some people don't like it that people read scans and you need to be careful with spoilers in thumbnails and titles - Officials: Very good and official translations, but obviously you have to wait almost 3 more days (decent risk of getting spoiled) and a majority of people in the community have already read the chapter by then and you get less views Apart from that, usually Oda releases 2-3 chapters in a row with a week break in between. So, this is context that you may not know, as it was given in Film Red (technically in a two manga page pamphlet given out in cinema for each showing), but now that you're as caught up with God Valley as we are I think I'm ok saying it. Shanks was found in a chest as a baby by Roger's crew, after God Valley. During Oden’s flashback, we see Roger and Rayleigh specifically mention that it’s been a long time since there was a baby on board after Momo’s birth. Shanks would later on in life find another baby in a chest, and chose to adopt her, which led into that film, but that's not the important bit here. In Kuma's backstory, Saint Figarland Garling (the chap with the crescent moon red hair) looks an awful lot like Shanks. When Whitebeard and Shanks met face to face after Enies Lobby, Whitebeard says specifically that when he sees Shanks, the scar that man gave him itches. Now I'm quite happy to put two and two together to make five, but if we assume that Shanks is Garling's son, that raises an even more interesting theory. Remember when we saw someone who looked to be Shanks, talking to the Gorosei in person about a certain pirate? And remember how we saw that cloaked man from the right, so we didn't see any scars or missing arm? Could be another son of Garling, and the pirate that man was talking about was in fact Shanks. You know damn well by now that Oda's exactly the kind of author who'd blindside us like this.

Welcome to pain! Kumas story is easily one of Odas best stories. Can’t wait to watch this! and glad you’re back!
It's good to be back!

Somehow I think when Oda drew Kaido's Flirty Drunk Phase he was thinking about Ivankov

Did you catch that Kuma's Jolly Roger was the drawing Bonney made for him?

Good point, when reading week to week it's kinda easy not to realize that.
Kuma's backstory is easily the saddest for me. I haven't ugly cried like this since Ace.
Life happens don‘t push yourself to much
KUMA IS THE PUREST CHARACTER IN THE SERIES! FIGHT ME
I don't want to fight you.
This backstory propelled Egghead to my top 2 arcs along with Enies Lobby. It's so heartbreaking and unbelievably good.
The Celestial Dragon hunting competition was reminiscent of Doffy's bird cage competition and points system. Copying his Celestial ancestors.

also random note but x drake being with kizaru on egghead as part of his fleet made kizaru kicking him on sabaody even funnier to me idk
We warned you, my dear....You were not ready for this one...THIS backstory broke a lot of us.
I WAS NOT READY
i am so incredibly happy i've been able to watch you through this entire journey this story really is something special

Yes , but you have withbeard.
@@Leon72-z7o both are really good fathers I think whitebeard is a buccaneer

Regarding reading weekly, a couple of thoughts:
- English One Piece chapters release as Scans on Thursday Evening (CET) as well as officials/VIZ on Sunday (5PM CET I think?)
- Pro/Con Scans, specifically from "TCB": Very good quality translations (I often prefer them to officials), you get more views on videos/live reads posting them early, but some people don't like it that people read scans and you need to be careful with spoilers in thumbnails and titles
- Officials: Very good and official translations, but obviously you have to wait almost 3 more days (decent risk of getting spoiled) and a majority of people in the community have already read the chapter by then and you get less views
Apart from that, usually Oda releases 2-3 chapters in a row with a week break in between. Sometimes there are holidays and stretches where fewer chapters get released or longer breaks occur, but for the last 2-3 years I think the average chapter release per year was around 35-37.
Let me know if you have any questions. :)
Also, if you catch up by next week, you might start your weekly reading journey on one of the most insane chapters of the whole series. :D
There is absolutely nothing redeeming about the official translation. The scans are far superior.
At this point reading one piece I have to say that the title needs a : until now, at the end jaja oda keeps making sadness
I can’t imagine how painful it’s going to be watching it animated! 😖
That will be SO SAD!
Did you notice that the test firing of that weapon left a hole in the ocean, that hadn't gone away? Does that remind you of Enies Lobby?
Love you our heart was broken
Did you notice kuma jolly roger was Bonney's drawing as a child 😢
So, this is context that you may not know, as it was given in Film Red (technically in a two manga page pamphlet given out in cinema for each showing), but now that you're as caught up with God Valley as we are I think I'm ok saying it.
