I don’t ever plan on owning a N20 but I love watching these instructional videos because he gives you pointers that you can use for other models. These guys and 1A auto videos are the best!
Thanks a million for the great step-by-step content. I purchase from you guys specifically because you put out this content, even in cases where you are a few dollars more.
I know im late....but shout out to Gareth and this channel.....i just finished this job.....wouldnt have even tried if i hadn't found this video video. 💪🏾💪🏾
I just completed this job. Gareth got me through it. Great video. In the next week or so I'll order another kit for my other N20. Next time I'll be 3x as fast. Tip to have the ratcheting wrench for that back bolt is key, BTW.
These FCP videos are Super Helpful and phenomenal we really appreciate the team producing this content please keep up the outstanding content you provide👌🏼👍🏼
I changed on my 2014 x3 this weekend. I am able to get about 3/4-gallon coolant out from running water pump self-bleeding process. just disconnect the hose at the reservoir then redirect hose to a bucket. I am also able to manage not disconnect the charge pipe just pull the intake manifold with the charge pipe together. Lesson learned: do NOT wash the oil cooler heat exchanger, based on how much mess you made while you take out Oil Filter Housing may want to take the serpentine belt out clean it then put it back on.
I decided to get the 428i because I thought the four-cylinder will be a hell of a lot easier to work on and maintain than the six cylinder … ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha BMW engineer said
Awesome video. I did this recently on my e89 with an n52. Much easier as I could work around without loosening the intake manifold. Now I’m ready to do this on my F30 with an n20 when needed. Many thanks!
Another helpful video. Thanks! Question- Would a retrofit of a stud and a nut in place of that one bolt that is blocked by the intake manifold work for future repairs, or would that still be too long and require the manifold to be removed? If it would work, could possibly consider for an updated kit from you guys. 😉
I love these DIYs! Keep it up! I do like to see if you can find B48/B58 engines in need of replacing the oil housing gaskets. The B48/B58 engines oil housing is in the back of the engine bay and made of plastic!!
Just did this, decided to replace the entire oil filter housing assembly and while I was at it I also replaced the intake manifold gaskets and the valve cover, I will never buy another BMW, until I can afford to pay someone else to repair it (without breaking the bank) lol
You do a good job and even though I have a n52 engine I watch most of what you put out that's BMW related because they all kind of relate to each other in one way or another. The only thing you have entirely too many commercials but I mean it is what it is thank you have a great week
Less is more when you don't have to pull the entire intake manifold off just removing the bolts and backing it off a way for clearance to get to your room to get to the rear bolt on the oil cooler common only things that I would suggest a recommend is a sweatband for the guy that says fcpeuro on the front of it, and a headlamp LED unit he can put on his forehead below his cab or to one side of the camera, I'll have to look up the procedure for our other car which is a 528i E60 6-cylinder 3L and see what is involved with replacing those gaskets as well
Very patient comprehensive tutorial. I must say BMW has gone totally sideways with their engineering. Requiring this much disassembly for a common problem that should never have happened makes me seriously consider wanting another. Professional DIY make it doable. I am looking into this for another person who owns this model and has this problem at 32K miles... Unreal I am a performance enthusiast who has always owned Euro cars for 45 years. The Asians at this point understand a few things the Europeans do not.
Hi first of all thanks for the amazing video that help us the DIYers' to save money! As you said on the video about the battery ground disconnection i did but it fall right back at it because i lose the grip on my hand and a did a spark but i continue cause it was the ground cable, i changed the gasket put it back together but my car does not wants to start, i got fuel but no spark, do you thing ECU went bad? and thanks for posting these helpful videos!
Just curious.. minus your filming setup etc., how long did this repair take you? and how long will it take the average DIYer with requisite experience? I find if the book rate is 4 hours, i budget 8 hours for me since I'm not a pro, don't have the special or easy tools, plus stopping to eat, fetch or hunt down tools, etc. it adds up. I hope to get my son to be my tool fetcher on this job now he's 13. Time he learns! Thanks for the video.. i feel more confident in doing this job DiY!
Really helpful video thank you, but why not fill up the oil filter housing with some oil? Really doesn’t make sense to have an empty pocket in the system
Also don't forget when you do these changes of oil and so forth will filter that you open up a Carfax and update your Carfax maintenance history at the same time as a DIY project
carfax is a joke. if anytone depends on that to find a reliable car yours in for a lot of pain. I've seen plenty of cars with 'clean' carfax that didn't list any accident, when the owner told me/had pictures or could easily be seen.
So, I lost a good Sunday afternoon and evening going this job. Now when I start the car within one to one and a half minutes the transmission temperature warning kicks in. I've run the water pump cycle program twice to purge air, but the transmission cooler-coolant lines still seem dry, with an air pocket. Did I miss some top secret special decoder portion of the video??? Did the transmission cooler thermostat spontaneously fail???
Good video. But after perfoming this procedure, the intake manifold should be removed as specified by BMW. It is a nice hack to leave the manifold in place if you are a professional shop, but not so much for weekend warriors.
Great video, I followed instructions, when trying to restart my car, it only would spin over. I disconnect battery again to attempt a reset of sort and then the car would not do anything. The lights would come on, but nothing else. Any ideas?
Once you assemble everything, you can prefill the chamber where the filter goes a bit before startup, however, it is not much different then when you do an oil change as far as how much oil is in it!
is it recommended to prime the engine oil before you first start the car?, I've read somewhere on the N55 it is necessary to build up oil pressure before starting by pulling the LP fuel pump fuse?.
If your in Dc or Va area I just replaced my gaskets on my bmw f30 335i hmu if you tryna replace your gaskets I’ll charge you way less than the dealership
I have a 2014 428 n20 and my oil filter housing gasket needs to be replaced aswell I won’t be able to do it for at least 2 to 3 weeks from now . I just had the oil changed do you think she can survive till then ?
Hey! I have the N20, where could I find replacement clips that connect to the acoustic cover, seems like I’m having a leak coming from there, thank you!
I have this same model if anybody out there reading this. Can yall pls explain a reason why is there Gas smell coming from the left rear door. Had fuel tank replaced put thousands of dollars in it. An the fuel smell still persist. Anybody out there pls give me a feed back. Thank you. Blessings.
Hi Sheldon, unfortunately, this gasket leaking would not cause that. More than anything you would have an engine bay covered in oil down the side of the block.
apparently some F10 528i N20 have different manifold (and alternator mounting hardware) as this one can take the back bold without removing the intake manifold ! th-cam.com/video/HmY1KJjAAIo/w-d-xo.html Mine isn't like that (2014), but the engine block does have a bolt hole underneath the back one 2cm away that would be SOOO much easier to access had they use to attach the oil hoising instead of that stupid bolt blocked the manifold. Aggrr, BMW !!!
Hi Derick, the leaking oil may be the worst of your troubles. In an extreme case, there is a chance for some intermix to happen but typically not something we see very often. We recommend you diagnose a bit further if that's the case!
What is the root cause of this failure? I have had to replace this twice, my F30 has 134K miles on it. Very disappointing design and expensive repair. BMW should provide a free reimbursement or recall and fix the bad design.
the parts are linked below the video, ans cost can be found on the site. As far as labor, you'll want to get quotes from your local shops as labor rates vary from region to region and shop to shop.
So I decided to DYI and I have a question,if when I remove the DME and put it back on is that any problem like have to be cording after backup everything?

really appreciate the n20 content.
as usual, awesome video, i was waiting for this to do it on my F25 same engine N20, thanks
Glad you like the video, Mahmoud!
To all my flat rate techs this is doable. Just remove the charge pipe to the side. DME. And you can slide the intake back enough to remove that bolt.
I love my bmw but god damn 20 different tools for a gasket is crazy when i replaced it on a rav4 it was like 3 tools lol.

Can you guys do a coolant flush on thr N26 model
I need this service to my car sadly Noone knows how to do it in my area
Do you have to prime your engine?
Thank you, sir.
Can you reuse the bolts on these?
Any need to prime the engine after this procedure?
You don't need to add oil for what you siphoned?
Really love the video, but could you also add what a dealership or a shop would charge to do that same procedure.
Hi P W, the best solution for that would be to contact your local shop, as the rates are going to vary from place to place!
$1,400 at my dealer price given just yesterday

There's been instances where ofhg has been replaced and the engine seized either right after or a few miles later. Any thoughts on this?

Is it necessary to change those bolts for housing and cooler or can I use the original one

Good job. Is it a coolant leak or an oil leak usually
Usually oil David !
Just suck out of the overflow reservoir... you only need to drain past the heat exchanger

Disconnect the battery cable in the engine compartment.
Would this cause dark gray smoke from exhaust and then it dying?
Hi Sheldon, unfortunately, this gasket leaking would not cause that. More than anything you would have an engine bay covered in oil down the side of the block.
What's the blue vacuum hose connected to the PCV on the valve cover for?
It connects to the intake to get its vacuum pressure for the pcv
