The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

That was "live" folks. Who the heck could do that today? Man, I will never forget Johnny. RIP my friend.
I didn’t realize it until I heard a brass player hit a slight clinker. Lol. They all did an awesome job and the lead singers voice is great.
When singers could really sing!!
It is 2023 and tone deaf producers and sound engineers at the record companies are "fixing" these live performances. They are applying auto tuning and pitch correction to our best music of the 60's 70's and 80's!! There is NOTHING like live performances from those days and they are being ruined. Your ears are not failing you, AI is destroying our early music!
No live. They’re lip synching.
I was there for the show in NYC taped for Sunday night 12/15/1968. LIVE!@@anothernewworld9650
Sometimes hard to watch as it makes my heart ache with the memories of those days.
You nailed it, JohnB. Best wishes.
Brings back some difficult memories.
Me too! 😢
100 per cent agree.
Mine too..
Some years ago I was in Long Island and I was at some outdoor festival I suddenly hear Johnny voice I thought it was playing out of a stereo I kept walking through the crowds and there he was singing this song I stopped in my tracks and smiled to think how lucky was I to hear him live. Great Great singer.
Saw him a few times in person. Usually at a small venue. Always a great show.
@@jermaf Johnny Maestro was one of the all time greats. Saw him a couple of times down in Freeport (not Bahamas!!) Long Island back in the '80s. Love, love , love Johnny and the Brooklyn Bridge.
I saw him and The Brooklyn Bridge on LI...early 90s...free outdoor concert. Amazing
Saw the Brooklyn Bridge in Orange County, NY in the 60’s. Great show!
How cool!!!
I watch this at least once a week. This is one of the best live pop performances I've ever heard. The band is totally on point and Johnny Maestro's singing thrills me over and over. He's not as well known as Gary Puckett or Tom Jones, but he's up there with them for me. That's one of Jimmy Webb's best songs, incredible writer.
@ John Herdt I agree with your entire comment. This is a song that has stood the test of time and I can hear it often. Never gets tired. The moment I hear the beginning, I must hear it all the way through. Get the chills from the emotion in Johnny's voice.
Did they do more??!
I will search Brooklyn bridge
Agree on the singer!
******
Count me in. This is a fantastic performance.
I was 13 years when I first heard this song on the radio, I loved then, I love it more now. A great voice , a great song , a great group,
Totally agree.
One of the greatest songs ever written and performed. Period.
lol. Not this performance. Listen to the off notes of the horns toward the end. Even the key board player is laughing.
@@djack4125 But it is a great song despite this
@@erickjason9092 Agreed!
But is it though. It's anthemic and complex like most of Jimmy Webb's songs: "23 chords and the truth". It may grow on me; but right now I'll stay with Wichita Lineman.
@@rosskelly8268 Another Great great song.
What a voice!!!! Rest In Peace Mr. Maestro.
What a song!! God Bless Jimmy Webb!!!
🌹
He was fabulous so good
What a voice!
There’s something about this song that every time I hear it, it brings tears to my eyes.
Mine too
@samuelsantiago3229...Your reaction to this bittersweet tune equals mine. The memory of how I acquired this record comes flooding back every time I hear the song. Even though it rips my heart out whenever listening to "Worst That Could Happen," I'll forever love this song, Johnny's unique voice, and everything else attached to this heart-wrenching song. The memories and feelings are endless.
Love lost is one of the most searing emotions known to mankind. I feel your pain.
@@elwoodoneida1293, thank you for your perfectly stated input. You've captured the true essence of lost love in just a few words.
Amazing! Me too! I sat here and listened to this, and thought, "why am I tearing up over this?" --- Simple. Because it's GOOD. Ha ha.. The song is magnificent, and the singer sings it with tremendous finesse and sincerity.
why didn't this group have a string of top hits... what a voice!!
When Johnny was with the Crests they did have a string (7 top 40 hits from 1958 to1961) but this was the only one here which I agree there should have been more.
Still have this 45 IN YR 2022..collected it when young still have all MY GREAT 45s👍❤
Exactly my thought!
Sometimes all you need is one hit...to last many lifetimes. Thanks.
@@julieannkuster1999 I had it too at one time; on Buddah Records if I remember right. I can still picture it spinning on my old blue-and-white record player. I also remember my brother loaning my box of 45s to a friend of his and never saw them again. Had Gary U.S. Bond's Quarter to Three and, well, lots of good stuff. Oh well. :)
I cry every time I hear this song..one of my favorites when I was a teenager..
Those were wonderful times for me.
Not only do I love the song, -- but it happened to me.
I wasn't born until 1980 and I kind of envy my parent's generation... The music back in the late 50s through the 60s and into the mid 70s was and is the best era of music ever! I grew up listening to Metallica, Pink Floyd and Nirvana in the early 90s, however in my early 20s I started to fall in love with the music from the 60s!
@@goblinhairedguy so sorry Robert ((( Hug )))
Happened to me my 1st love and 50 years later I still love Her. I blew it
i do too loved johnny he is in heaven now singing with the angels
John Mastrangelo....was without question a great vocalist and the records he made with several groups will stand the test of time...
He was also with the "Crests" "Sixteen Candles"
And many other songs ..
AN MAGNIFICIENT, PHENOMENAL, AN GENNIAL, STUNNING, AMAZING, AND INCREDIBLED, SUPER AND MASTER, MASTER-PIECE ABSOLUTELLY HARMONIOUS, WHOPPING, HOMERIC BAND "THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE" ("A PONTE DO BROOKLYN").

Sometimes it takes decades to realize the best songs of the 60s and 70s, and this is certainly one of them.
This is one great song, and Johnny had an amazing voice. RIP

On Sunday December 17, 1967, Spanky and our Gang, performed, Lazy Day, on the Ed Sullivan Show. I missed it as I landed in Bien Hoa Air Base in the wee hours to begin my first tour of duty in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division. So I am just finding that out now as I just watched it.
Flash forward to December, 1968. I missed this performance too coming back from Vietnam as I had to spend a few more extra days in-country in order to get a five month early out. So after the few days were up, I came home on leave for 30 days, just before Christmas 1968, to return to Vietnam in mid January, 1969.
This song got a lot of air play in the winter/spring of 1969 on AFVN. This was my best friend's song. We were assigned to a rifle company in the central highlands and I was the company medic. He used to get up on a table at an EM club and sing it as it was playing on a juke box.
In time, the rifle company disbanded and everyone was reassigned elsewhere. However, we continued to remain in contact, as he was engaged and wanted me to be his best man at his wedding after we both got out.
As it turned out, he was KIA on 8 June 1969 in Tay NInh Province. Losing my best friend was something I still carry to this day. So whenever I hear this song, it remind me of him. If you can, look up his name on the virtual wall. His name is Thomas W Strathmann and he was from Beaver Falls, PA.
THANK YOU for your service!
Yes, thank you for your service to our country! Forever appreciated! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you & your friend for your service. God bless you both.🇺🇸
Welcome home brother,553rd MP co. FT. Campbell,Ky.1977
God bless your friend. My husband also served in Nam.
really nothing like this stuff, real talent from everyone on stage
Real music. I could listen to this kind of all day what a band!! Keyboard horns vocals. Wow you don't see that no more in music music to me nowadays garbage....nuff said
I agree, but the trumpeter seems to be having a hard time.
Nowadays it's just a vocalist and a few interchangeable studio musicians. And the vocalist gets all the $$$
Omg,I love my music but that was hilarious.
Has she had lessons from Les Dawson.
Back when music was real music no auto-tune no computerized synthesizers just voices and instruments
Your comment is so close-minded. Ever tried something called SPOTIFY?
Over the past 50+ years planet Earth has been drifting down that filthy road to the ultimate gutter of evil and complete loss of all hope. Listening to performances like this helps me forget where I am for the moment.
Somebody, please, take me on that time machine back to the 60’s 😿
There’s a war for sure…. It’s against the darkness. Please don’t give up ~~fight fight fight!!!
Amen! I luv nostalgia!
Who are you the Grim Reaper?
I'm 69 , I saw Brooklyn Bridge perform when I was in high at The Beach Club , Myrtle Beach, when Johnny sang "Worst That Could Happen" it was fabulous ! Almost more than a young South Carolina country boy could comprehend !
RIP, Johnny Maestro, your music is 4-ever.
Was Johnny in an earlier band?
Yep - The Crests. They are famous for Sixteen Candles. @joycepino9749
Johnny was a beast of a singer.
What a great performance, all band members looking sharp and in tune, RIP Johnny Maestro, Christmas 1968 when life was great.
God man, so much. We're in a different world now and it's really, really bad.
Saw Johnny & The Brooklyn Bridge back in '67 at a local high school. Johnny was dressed neatly in slacks and shirt, but the rest of the band wore street clothes and looked like The Dead End Kids. When they started playing my jaw dropped. They were amazingly polished and tight. I almost burned my drums the next day. RIP Johnny.
@@drumsport The man was a beast.

I was at the Cloud Nine a GoGo Club in Farmingdale on Long Island in 1968 when the Brooklyn Bridge auditioned for Johnny Maestro. What a performance!

One of the greatest voices in popular music history.
Johnie Miastro what a voice, from the Crest's to The Brooklyn Bridge....😀
Johnny Maestro.
Thank God for you tube I sill can see real bands real music 👍👍👍🎶
He did a fine job into the next 1960's decade from the prior 1950's Crests.
His voice is amazing, the background singers are amazing with harmonizing they're all good looking people the instrumental is amazing...yet it's soo bitter sweet!
Real music I could listen to music like this all day
Soo beautiful and yes. Sooo bittersweet
Look up his song "I'll Be True" I think it is even better than this one.

One of the best songs and best vocals ever. All these years later, it still rings bells inside of us, um, mature folks. I'm so thankful for this posting. Cheers, dears!
Rings bells inside and makes my eyes leak and warms my heart, after I moved to Cape Coral, Florida,I found out Johnny had lived here , and later I read he passed away and a little piece of my youth went with him, what memories
One of my favorite 45's but even better live :)
This song gives me goosebumps all over, what a voice and backing band. Superb. Peerless.
Mr Johnny Mistro. Definitely Deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Legends.2023.
Real voices no auto tone no gadgets. Only talented singers
My Dad would play this track when I was kid.. For some reason I can't stop listening to music of this era. Really into Young Rascals, 4 Seasons, Temptations, Laura Nero right now. Really.. the best music ever made!
My parents were the same way, I hardly listen to my generation's music as I found my parents music more interesting (50's and 60's).
It'll never happen Again......

Same here. My sister Lillie was 9 years older than I, already a teenager. This was one of her favorite songs. Now here I am 68 and Lillie is long gone. Bittersweet memories.
Yes, great era in music history. 1950s sweet too.
Is like the best performance of this song ever?
All live. No safety net. Not an easy song to perform live with this arrangement, either.
This performance and Billy Davis Jr's original. These guys both true talent,,

Jeannie here. I watched my first LOVE get married to a girl after he broke my heart♥I stood next to his DAD who was a second Dad to me while he hugged me. Saddest day EVER. I've never .married. I have 2 beautif daughters and grandchildren. Been with him 37 yrs but didn't marry him.I never loved any man since I've loved Derek then he left me after 7 yrs. My heart so terribly bad. Swore no man would ever break my Heart again. So not married. I miss you Derek. Rest in Peace ♥You didn't need to come back home for me to watch you die💙♥
One of the best voices ever, and he and his band could back it up live big time.
I saw Johnny and the Brooklyn Bridge at the Aragato Restaurant in Henrietta, New York, probably in the early 70's. Fantastic performance! I continued to watch for years to see if he would ever be in the Rochester, New York area again. Many years later he was going to perform at the German House in Rochester but the show was canceled for some reason. I continued to follow him on the internet and he was still performing at schools. I never did get to see him again before he died, and it still makes me sad.
What a voice. Holy smokes.
strong and beautiful. amazing
I was watching this live when it aired in 1968, as a nine year old. Now, across the gulf of time, I start my day by viewing this little masterpiece. It encapsulates the musical performances from the Ed Sullivan show: superb showmanship, unique sets, and vocal perfection by the lead singer. Johnny Maestro had grown up right there in Manhattan, and had been a teen idol just a few years before. This song was a big hit, and turned out to have been Brooklyn Bridge's high water mark. We can only imagine if Johnny had been given additional viable material to record.
One of my all-time favorite songs and performances. Can't get enough of this music.
Johnny Maestro had a wonderful and powerful voice. The Brooklyn Bridge was such a wonderful band... real New York bel canto soul.... Italy meets Harlem!
And they have horns to in the band you don't see that to much now a day😊👍🎷🎷🎷🎺🎺🎺
SWEET SOUNDS miss this on my Transistor Radio !

Lol. THE Jim Dandy ??! Boy Howdy !
No one on this earth could ever match that voice. Rock and roll at it's very best.
It’s 9/15/24 in Austin, Tx! Best song and group ever! Seniors were great in ‘68! I’m 75 and still rockin to the ‘60s today🥳🎶
A legendary, unique recording. RIP Johnny Mastro.
Even the botched trumpet note at the end is great. It adds character to a live performance like this.

Cool
I hear this and think of the revolutionary times that were the 1960's, the passion, the turbulence, the music, the war, the counter-culture, the ache for constancy, the push into uncertainty... This song captures so much. It's of its time while transcending it. Brilliant.
This song was huge in my neighborhood in the south Bronx . I was 15 now 68. Brings back happy memories.
fordham road..
I was 7, and I remember it like it was yesterday. Gives me chills
What an amazing voice, and he's been singing like this since he was a teenager. And he sings with this kind of passion in all his songs. The way he sings this song goes straight through to my soul. R.I.P. Johnny Maestro. ❤😢
Great tune great performance. I love these late 60s style of ballads they had something never repeated in later songs. A great era of music. Takes me back to the sixties when I was a young kid.

Johnny Maestro is a gift and such a talent
A very powerful melody and strong vocals, poetic and sad lyrics, nice brass instrumentation. A classic tune, this will still be appreciated in 100 years !! xx age 76, West Coast
Thank you for this. What a great live performance! This captures the same emotion as the record. Such a talented vocalist and group. I always thought they were worthy of more hits than simply this classic and "Blessed is the Rain." So glad our TV musical past has been preserved.
Probably their biggest hit was “Welcome Me Love”.
Definitely! Fewer than half of the musicians on Sullivan were "trusted" to deliver top-notch performances, I'd guess, and had to lip-sync. Not sure why, as most of the groups gigged regularly and could kick out their tunes in their sleep. This is a wonderful performance--better than the record, IMO.
yes totally agree!
This song has one of the most involved bridges I've ever heard in pop music.
Hey, The Ed Sullivan Show, I think it would be great to add Ed's introductions to the acts; no need to make him invisible. My family watched him every Sunday evening at, I believe, 8PM. We never knew what we would see (aside from Topo Gigio) but it was always great. The Beatles... spinning plates..... circus performers.... stand-up. :)
I think the trumpet player was quite nervous on his wee solo; a couple of slightly sour notes... BUT what has me totally impressed is the way that Johnny Maestro just sails past the hiccups and blows the performance right out of the park. So much rightly-placed confidence. To be able to sing like that!
Topo Gigio_ I remember that.
Wow! Shades of Tom Jones, but this artist belted the ENTIRE SONG! Exceptional!!!
What a great voice! great Jimmy Webb song
Seriously, Jimmy Webb wrote that hit? What a great song writer!
My mom and aunt Terry sang backup when they the band first started out...not on this video. My mom and aunt are no longer with me. And I just finally remembered the name of the song! I love you so much Momma and aunt Terry.
I've come late to the party celebrating songwriter Jimmy Webb. Still finding out that he was the creator of songs that were the soundtrack of my life. In her musical memoir, Linda Ronstadt reveals Jimmy as one of her top favorite songwriters and singers. High praise from one of the Queens of Rock...of Everything!
If that's a live performance - holy crap. That is singing at full send, lots of big notes, big harmonies, brass... and they nailed it like a studio final wrap.
"Happy and a very Healthy 2025 to All here listening to JM. May God rest his soul and I sure hope he's in heaven singing with the Angels~. Thank You Johnny.. ♥️❣️💔
TEN, very talented, side-burned guys and one angelic woman on the keyboards!
That angelic woman's name was Carolyn, who was super-nice. She married one of the singers in the group and they both ran a waterbed store afterwards in Mesa, AZ. My husband worked at the waterbed store and we went to a party at their house. They had their gold disc from the R.I.A.A. on display. in their home. Hearing "The Worst That Could Happen" brought back a lot of memories for me.
Such a soulful performance, just love it.

Sounds better than it did 50+ years ago. Incredible song, voice , lyrics, band. One of my all time favorites.
I remember seeing them on the Ed Sullivan show back in 1968 and just loved that song and you knew that Johnny Maestro voice was something special when you heard him singing.
This song is how I feel about a love lost. I met her 35 years ago today (July 17, 1989).
I could have married her, but because of a tragic relationship in 1979, I was unable to carry through. I think of her every day and this song makes me cry every time I listen to it. This lost love's name was Mary Jane Dietrich (nee: Rempel). I wish that she could hear this song as it is me from the deepest part of my soul.
Regret is the conscience's painful reminder of what had been, what could have been, and what will never be.😢
On this 14th anniversary of his passing keep singing for the angels Johnny, your leading heavens hall of fame ,said the night owl 🍻 🦉 🎶!
Before auto tune . Before lip sync . When a live performance was raw talent and not some artificial studio creation. This is the good stuff.
Musical acts lip synced all the time on TV in the '60s. This one just happens to live.
It may have been the worst that could happen but when this song came out, it was the best time of my life.
Reliving my childhood through TH-cam, great song and live performance. 🎗
The voice, the hair, the tuxes..... Back in the Day!!
Just beautiful! Be sure to see Johnny Maestro and his amazing band play many of Johnny's older hits at the 1991 show at the plaza at the World Trade Center!
