    Heard you can add 1g of potassium chloride per 100ml ph 4 buffer to make 3 molar KCL storage solution? Also read for 1-3 molar you need 75g-223g potassium chloride (KCL) to make 1 litre storage solution. Also heard you can use distilled water with KCL to make 3 molar storage solution? Would love the answer to how much Potassium chloride you need?1g KCL per 100ml ph buffer 4 or 22g KCL per 100ml buffer 4 or distilled water? Even heard you can get away with brand of no salt salt like Morton branded kcl salt which people with high blood pressure use? 223g of kcl seems like a lot per 1 litre of buffer 4 though. Would very mild washing up liquid in water be fine with soft tooth brush be okay for cleaning? Would this damage the gel on the outside of the glass probe?

    • @cdh79
      @cdh79 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      storage solution is usually KCl (potassium chloride), which is also what's inside of most PH meters.. to my understanding how PH metering is done is by exchanging ions between the KCl on the inside of the probe and and what's being measured outside the glass-wall.. if you store it in another solution, there will constantly be an ion exchange, even when the meter is not turned on so eventually the KCl inside the probe will not have sufficient ions to work properly and will have to be replaced.. if you don't own a probe with replaceable KCl, that means you need to eventually buy a new probe.. if you store the probe in KCl, there is an equilibrium inside and outside the probe glass-walls (as it's the same liquid, so it has the same amount of ions), and there will not be any exchange while it's turned off, keeping the inside KCl "fresh" longer and thus extending the time of the probe.
      at least that's how it was explained to me..

    • @HannaInc
      @HannaInc  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Vadim. Vinegar is very acidic. You wouldn't want to use it as a storage solution. Storage solution is designed to hydrate pH glass while also maintaining the integrity of the electrode.

    My HI98129 combo meter's manual says to store in ph 4 solution if I don't have storage solution. is there anything wrong with storing it in ph 4 solution? and how about ph 7?

    • @HannaInc
      @HannaInc  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tee. pH 4 is a great short term solution if you run out of storage solution. Because of the internal electrolyte, you don't want to use pH 7. You definitely do not want to substitute storage solution for calibration, though. Over time, the glass will not hydrate properly.

    • @tee228
      @tee228 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What would happen over time if I continue to use pH 4 and would I be able to fix it with storage solution?

    • @HannaInc
      @HannaInc  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The junction and electrolyte of an electrode work together to form an electrochemical circuit, giving you the pH reading. The chemistry of the KCL storage solution is similar to the electrolyte in the electrode so there is not interference when hydrating the bulb. Over time, if calibration buffer leaches into the electrolyte, it would give you false readings because the salt content would be diluted. pH 4 buffer is a short term fix because this doesn't happen right away, but storage solution is definitely an important part of keeping your electrode working properly.

      Jesse James yes you absolutely do need to keep them wet. If they dry out they are ruined.

    • @Tadesan
      @Tadesan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The probes are quite delicate and if used regularly they don't last long term. The reasons are various and complex.

    • @HannaInc
      @HannaInc  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jesse! You want to store your electrode in a proper storage solution. pH electrodes have a porous outer glass layer that can get dehydrated. Dehydrated glass will cause your meter not to stabilize or calibrate. If you find that you haven't stored the electrode correctly, you can use cleaning solution and let it sit for 10-15 minutes, after, keep it in storage solution for at least an hour. Many times that will bring the electrode back to life! Hope this helps!

      @@johndoe-vc1we I don't recall Part Numbers, there's been MANY Meters over my 18 years of Growing. I used all the Hanna meters from cheap to mid price range.....meaning under 70 dollars. The shitty $8 dollar Ebay PH meters for pot growers were more reliable then Hanna. The best meters i have used thus far is the HM Digital - PH-80. Its under 50 bucks and will usually last a few years. My current one is going on 2 years old and working perfect. I keep it stored in storage solution in the cap. When i use it, i spray the Element off with Reverse osmosis water , pad dry the outside of the meter and stick back into the cap. All PH meters require cleaning and storage solution but some manufacturers dont include decent instructions for maintenance and care.

    • @johndoe-vc1we
      @johndoe-vc1we ปีที่แล้ว

      @@harrynut3044 i wanted to get the PH-200 but you can get three PH-80s for the price. There is a combo kit by Apera for the PH20 that includes everything. This one takes 4xAAA so it will be heavier.
      How well does the PH80 keep its calibration? I see people complaining it needs constant calibration. I see this complaint with most models. There is a new variant called the PH-80s with a bigger cap. The older one has a slimmer cap. So it will keep longer.
      Agree with the cleaning, I got a wash bottle just for that. Storing upright was also mentioned by one grower I saw.
