Well explained, only few things might be said different: -for most plants good pH is something between 5,5 and 6,5 (not 6,0 and 7,5 as said in video) -as it might be seen, you are growing leafy vegetables (maintaining EC and making good nutrient ratio, by using nutrient for pH down, is very tricky), reason for that is requirement of low EC -if you want good composition in nutrient solution for your plants you should know exactly what is the composition of ''pH down'' which is not mentioned in video (or I've overseen it) -for leafy vegetables it's recommended to use rainwater (because we want to have good EC and nutrients that plant requires) -tap water usually have EC about 0,8 dS/m (that varies, depending on a place where you live), and chemical composition that is filling that 0,8 dS/m is not effective for a leafy greens growth -leafy greens require EC from 0,8 to 1,5 dSm (depending on the green), so if you are using tap water and add nutrients than you are using only --> 0-50% potential of the nutrient solution -by adding ''pH down liquid'' you're getting your EC even higher, so for example: I'd suggest using nitrogen acid to get lower pH & equally that put less of the nitrogen salts for the requirements of EC I hope this helps, keep the good work, and I wish you all the best.

Well Mr knowall…….Not everyone has rainwater available and speak for yourself my plants seem to flourish at 6.5 NOT 5.8. So I would suggest 6.5-7.5 is Ok but obviously not for an expert like yourself.

I switched to the Paper strips for PH testing. I had to always check the PH on the meter and set the standard to much. The strips just tear and dip. It couldn't be easier. Also look around for the color on the strips if you have a hard time seeing it. the style i have is yellow orange red purple blue and you really know which number you are at with in .2 which is pretty damn good. I also pay a buck or 2 per roll and can do a lot of tests before buying more.
NaOH is fine to use, it's effect on pH is so strong the EC change and sodium content are negligable. KOH is preferable though. I've used ammonia when nothing else was available and it seemed to work fine. Both of them won't cause any cristallization of any salts.
I want to know if I use the TDS meter to test the nutrient solution? I understand that it’s used to test my water before I add nutrients. Then I should check the PH in solution then ,what ? Thank you

How can you test water for high carbonate? Where do I get my water tested? I've added an in insane amount of pH down n it'll decrease for half n hour and then creep back up to 7. I can't get a consistently lower reading.

hi mr bright my plants are in soil. my water going in is right about 6.5 but the runoff is way down at 4.0. my plants are starting to show signs of lockout. what can i do to get the runoff back up to par.

I just use a spreadsheet, tracking pH, ppm, EC, amounts of up or down used and its effect on pH change, etc. Very useful for spotting trends especially if you graph the data. Man I love Excel... nerdy enough for you?

Hello Copycat, pH is just a measure of how many Hydrogen (H+) ions are in the mixture. Plants split H2O into Hydroen and oxygen during photosynthesis. The reason this is a problem in hydroponics and not in soil or in nature is because in hydro there are no place for them to go so they just build up. In soil they get dissipated into the ground. its possibly to do with the nitrate: ammonium ratio in your liquid feed. Plants stay electrically neutral by emmitting hydoxide (liming effect on substrate). If the balance of ions is negative they will do this and this happens when nitrate absorption percentages are high. So plants can lift the pH of their substrate this way. We grow in organic materials and can fix this by adding more ammonium, but not too much.
I have questions. I just want to start a home zip grow system with 3'or 4'toweres and a small tub with goldfish. My ph out of the tap is 7.8 and I don't want to have to battle it. Ph changes are especially dangerous to fish as well by the way. What would you recommend growing with a ph of 7.8? I live in Southern California.

Hey Jaqui! Usually pH down for plants is phosphoric acid, whereas for pools it is sulfuric acid. Phosphoric acid isn't quite as strong so it is better suited to smaller volumes, sulfuric acid is quite a bit stronger so more care needs to be taken when changing pH (pools usually have a much larger volume of water) From a chemical sense though, they should work fine
My ph comes out of the tap at ph of 9. After adding nutes and ph down to get it to ph of 6, if I don't use it that day the ph goes back up and i gotta use ph down again. I'm using pro mix and i assume my plants are only getting nutrients for a day before the ph goes back to being to high (I only water once a week). If I use hydroponics, do I have to ph down every single day? Or is there something weird with this ph drift? Please help.
check the ph of your water and then after adding the nutrients . Lots of time you don't need to do any thing . I have not used PH down in 3 mths since going into hydroponics for fun
I have to disagree with you on the use of lye (sodium hydroxide). Sodium hydroxide is frequently used in tissue culture to correct the ph of the media. Considering how crucial ph is in tissue culture, I would imagine lye would be equally suitable in hydroponics.

Hi Billy, typically in hydroponics pH has to be constantly buffered or acidified because the act of plants pulling nutrients from the water is always changing the pH. That being said higher quality nutrients tend to be more stable and are less prone to pH "swings" when dosed.
Hi Troy, Phosphoric acid is very commonly used as pH down; what you should stay away from is household products that might seem like a convenient way of lowering pH (like vinegar or lemon juice) as they breakdown in solution in a less predictable way and might have unexpected reactions with other chemicals present. They are also significantly less reliable and stable. Hope this helps!
RO, city water and well water all read differently. When adjusting using pH down remmber that RO will require the fewer drops and at the other end of the scale the well water will take the most drops to reduce your solution - Harley Smith
Ground coffee beans have been a great source for reducing the pH levels in organic production. Some studies have shown ground coffee beans dropping the pH of soil to as low as 4.6.

build a diy ppm meter. easy! just need a cheap multimeter and some wire and a pen tube. i use ph test kits, got 3 different types for a control standard. the fella at the store talked me out of buying a cheap one, told me every one of the cheapies came back. I didn't have $200 CDN. spent $30 for the test kits. I go back to his store all the time. any saleman that is too honest to sell you something are a rare breed. ended up spending $500 in other supplies lol.

Its very easy to over-correct pH, especially if your reservoir is smaller in volume. That's why its so important to dose in very small quantities until you're comfortable with the amounts needed to adjust your pH.
If you've dosed your pH too high or low when trying to correct it you can try to dose the opposite and bring it back but this isn't ideal as one will counteract the other and you may end up using considerably more than you otherwise would. The buffering capacity of the water is altered when you add pH up or down and you're suddenly working up hill. Ideally you would refresh your reservoir with new water and redose.
Never ever use PH up or down in soil grow, I buy soil with PH between 5 and 6 (info is on the back label) and my tab water comes at PH of 8 and PPM of 50, the plants themselves have the ability to adjust the PH to their liking in soil and take whatever they need. The hydro way of growing is BULLSHIT and tastes like nasty ass compared to organically soil grown weed, I know this because I've been growing since 5 years and I did TONS of experimentation, the first 3 years I was growing with hydro because 95% of the people on youtube grow hydro and they were my source of learning, I switched to soil because of so many reasons but one of them is, hydro weed isn't really healthy at all! you are feeding the plants nasty unnatural chemicals, YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT, and if you eat plants or animals that are fed with artificial garbage, well guess what, you are also consuming that shit! Sure you will get high from hydro weed, but its not the natural high that the cannabis plants produce. You may get slightly bigger buds from hydro than soil, but guess what... Fat people eat junk food a lot and they are bigger and heavier than athletic people, but does that mean fat people are healthier than athletic people? you know the answer... And what baffles me the most is, people complain about Monsanto and how they pollute our food with unnatural chemicals, but yet, they themselves grow their cannabis with shit that is even WORSE than what Monsanto does to their crops.... By the end of my essay to you, I advice you to stop growing hydro and switch to soil mixes, its much MUCH easier and waaay cheaper! Yes you have to constantly PH if you’re using a rez and getting fluctuation. Using tap water worsens fluctuations as well

1 ml per gallon of ph down works from 8 to 6.7 that's what works for my water

Ha ha he’s not lying about cheap PH meters, I literally did what he said not to do and bought the cheapest one Amazon had to offer and it is unstable and recently won’t change from the reading it’s stuck on🤬!
build a diy ppm meter. easy! just need a cheap multimeter and some wire and a pen tube. i use ph test kits, got 3 different types for a control standard. the fella at the store talked me out of buying a cheap one, told me every one of the cheapies came back. I didn't have $200 CDN. spent $30 for the test kits. I go back to his store all the time. any saleman that is too honest to sell you something are a rare breed. ended up spending $500 in other supplies lol.
try cleaning the contacts with a neutral ph and a small paint or tooth brush.

One thing you don’t talk about is how to fix ph when you overdose
Its very easy to over-correct pH, especially if your reservoir is smaller in volume. That's why its so important to dose in very small quantities until you're comfortable with the amounts needed to adjust your pH.
If you've dosed your pH too high or low when trying to correct it you can try to dose the opposite and bring it back but this isn't ideal as one will counteract the other and you may end up using considerably more than you otherwise would. The buffering capacity of the water is altered when you add pH up or down and you're suddenly working up hill. Ideally you would refresh your reservoir with new water and redose.
You NEVER mix ph up and ph down lol it causes a chemical reaction that will fry your plants just a test and you FAILED

Never ever use PH up or down in soil grow, I buy soil with PH between 5 and 6 (info is on the back label) and my tab water comes at PH of 8 and PPM of 50, the plants themselves have the ability to adjust the PH to their liking in soil and take whatever they need. The hydro way of growing is BULLSHIT and tastes like nasty ass compared to organically soil grown weed, I know this because I've been growing since 5 years and I did TONS of experimentation, the first 3 years I was growing with hydro because 95% of the people on youtube grow hydro and they were my source of learning, I switched to soil because of so many reasons but one of them is, hydro weed isn't really healthy at all! you are feeding the plants nasty unnatural chemicals, YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT, and if you eat plants or animals that are fed with artificial garbage, well guess what, you are also consuming that shit!
Sure you will get high from hydro weed, but its not the natural high that the cannabis plants produce. You may get slightly bigger buds from hydro than soil, but guess what... Fat people eat junk food a lot and they are bigger and heavier than athletic people, but does that mean fat people are healthier than athletic people? you know the answer...
And what baffles me the most is, people complain about Monsanto and how they pollute our food with unnatural chemicals, but yet, they themselves grow their cannabis with shit that is even WORSE than what Monsanto does to their crops....
By the end of my essay to you, I advice you to stop growing hydro and switch to soil mixes, its much MUCH easier and waaay cheaper! I mix two types of potting soil with perlite and cow manure, and only use one type of dry amendments that is high on phosphorous in flower and also must contain seaweed extract and other good stuff, and sometimes I water with sugars, my cannabis now is actually bigger and smells waaay much better than my hydro, and the smoke is so smooth and almost never makes me cough, unless I take a heavy bong hit of course, also I never dealt with bugs and I am indoor grower under two Meizhi COBs 600w LEDs, take care of your mind and body and cheers! below is a video I learned a lot from...
