- Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem, from the 1973 movie "Jesus Christ Superstar". In spite of the crowd's praise and enthusiasm, they were totally misguided, thinking that Jesus had come to establish an earthly kingdom and overthrow the Romans. Watch closely for the subtle but dramatic freeze frame when the crowd shouts, "Hey JC, JC won't you DIE for me..." The words have far more significance to Jesus than they realize!
This is truly my favorite part of the movie. When Ted smiles, it brings me joy. He truly has the best smile in the world
Not only he's a great singer that conveys a lot of emotion, but he's super charismatic. You can totally buy him as someone who would easily gather all those people.
"Hey JC JC would DIE for me" was always my favorite line, especially the reaction of Jesus - talk about somebody walking over your grave.

The part where Christ is being carried by the crowd, and the sun is behind Him as He raises His arms, is very very evocative and powerful.

I thought so. It’s always stuck out to me even when I saw the film in music class back in 2005 when I was 13. We watched Fiddler on the Roof, Amadeus, Jesus Christ Superstar,
Saw this in the theater in 1973. I recently found out that the shepherd and his flock under the setting sun at the film's end was not planned. Extraordinary!
A lot of things weren't set up by the producers, like Judas running into a flock of sheep, tanks and jets coming over the horizon. That was due to the 6-Day war of June 1967 happening at the time of filming. (I only know this b/c I have the DVD with the producers cut.) Amazing and anointed, IMO.
I was in a production of Jesus Christ Superstar once, and the director's initials were coincidentally J.C. and now I can never address him as anything but "Hey JC JC"
What strikes me is how the crowd looks so joyful, but the chorus-like tune continually moves from that joy into deep melancholy. It foreshadows their eventual turn from zealous supporters to malicious deniers in only a few measures.
It's because the key is changing from simple G major to B flat, then the following E flat major goes to E flat minor, all of which goes yet one key higher and then miraculosly coming back to simple G major through A flat and D. Absolutely fantastic extended modulation!
Nothing in all movie musicals is like the "Die for me freeze-frame."
Every emotion of The Passion in that one look- fear of the pain, resignation to his fate, and confidence that The Father has destined every moment of this week.

@@littlefriend420 As much as I LOVE Ian Gillian and his work in Deep Purple and the original JC Supertar concept album, he's not 100 times better than Neeley in this role. Neeley takes a lot from Gillian's interpretation and makes it his own thing. He's also great in the acting aspect, with a very impactful of screen presence (unlike other singers thatlater took the role). I love both Gillian and Neeley in the role for different reasons, but at the same time I like the fact that they sing in a similar fashion (the Gillian way), which I consider the best way to play this role.

I love how Caiphas is pretty much a "get off my lawn" old man here.
My atheist parents used to play this musical every Easter as a way to mock the story of Jesus and i was always insanely interested in it. 15 years later i’m a born again believer of Jesus Christ. Testimony of how God uses negative events to glorify Himself and His son! Praise Jesus He is risen!!!

Saw it on Broadway back in the day. One of my favorite musicals growing up.
My Aunt and Uncle took me to see the musical in Boston when I was a kid. I loved it.
So I was tasked for looking up Palm Sunday songs for church next month and all I could think about was this song. Lol. I came to take a listen so I could focus on the task at hand and get it off my mind.
Look up Palestrina if you want more traditional Easter music. Or if you want more musicals, I recommend Godspell.

Hey JC, JC you're alright by me (and so is Ted Neely)! Blessed to see Ted and Carl Anderson perform this with my dad circa 1991, Merriam Theatre, Philly. To see that he is STILL performing this as recent as 2017 is incredible.
I saw them live in a theater as well around 1993, wish I had gotten closer seats, still great though.
It just bums me out that four days later, they’ll be telling Pilate to persecute him.

The story of Jesus is one of the greatest of all time. You can appreciate it a lot more when you think of it as awesome fiction.
I'm not Christian either, but he's an interesting historical figure. Especially because the line between history and religion are so blurred in this case.

Ted Neeley did an amazing performance as Jesus. Every part of him in this scene is amazing: "Why waste your breath, moaning at the crowd? Nothing can be done to stop the shouting. If every tongue was still, the noise would still continue, the rocks and stones themselves would start to sing!"
I watch this a lot. The Hershey symphony did this last year and I got to see it. The music is really beautiful and his voice is too. Praise God.

Miriam Gaenicke Me too. He just stopped touring a few years ago. I think it was the late 90’s when I saw it, and bought a tie-dyed T- shirt . They used them to represent the temple market, so it felt a little weird buying it. It lasted me all this time. Finally fell apart last year.

Imagine walking with the people that you're just trying to improve the lives of and you hear "Would you die for me?", and realize they think you're some kind of god? (Looking at the JCS interpretation of the story specifically) That's an awfully scary thought.

Greeting on Good Friday ✝️ 4/2/21 this controversial contemporary take on the life of Christ came at a time a youth revival type movement was sweeping the country. Older teenagers and younger adults were proclaiming it "cool" to be down with Christ. The popularity of this classic musical made that quite evident.

Unironically something that made me think; at first he was like 'yeah I can do all those things, I'll be your friend etc etc' but when the mob turned on him and wanted him to die for them he realised he was doing something wrong.
This was made on such a low budget, they couldn't even afford the donkey for JC to ride into town!
He does ride in on a donkey in the previous scene/song (This Jesus Must Die)
It also was made by a big director Norman jewison who directed lots of big movies including chers award winning performance in moonstruck

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR was also successful at the box office.
And it was nominated for several Golden Globes (Best Musical/Comedy, Ted Neely & Carl Anderson for Best Actor, Yvonne Elliman for Best Actress) and one Oscar (Best Score).

Still the best version of this movie. Still the best 90-minute story of the Bible in my opinion they picked the Perfect cast. Out in the desert no green screens, no AI this movie is still very underrated in my opinion you don't have to be very religious to enjoy it and the music is phenomenal of course

It's not identically sung enough that's what you possibly hear. I can hear that, too. But...it' s the crowd, so...
I think the notes they sing are intentional, Andrew Lloyd Webber the writer loves his elements of rock opera and if that calls for slightly jarring harmonies he does stuff like that. Just think of “Don Juan Triumphant” in the Phantom of the Opera. It’s a hard song to listen to because the harmonies seem to clash, but if anything I think it makes it more interesting for us the listeners.
Maybe it’s also his storytellers way of making us be suspect of the crowds motive by saying, “hmm, something doesn’t sound right”. Like a musical foreshadowing. Just my thoughts.

If there are millions of people on antidepressant and anxiety medication, then there are still millions of anxious and depressed people. Masking a symptom with a drug is not healing and so the fullness of the spirit and fruits of the spirit are lost and life looses joy and natural pleasure. This is why spiritism/pharmakia cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven and neither can the sinners.
For Life in accord with God's promise for life we must walk in and by God's Spirit of altruistic Love for Life. God's #Loveisnotacortisol stress hormone and God's Love guides us away from the causes of stress hormones to allow our endorphins to flourish.

God's Love made whole and One in our blood.
