When draining oil out of the system whats the temp should it be in? And all the oil should be drained all out when taking off the pan does it? Thank you in advance and you content really helped.
Just done this on m3 e92. Dry gearbox takes 3.5l and then when running ista it ended up 5.3 litres. That’s max it will take. Wonder how your m5 had 6 and you managed to add even more. Also you start adding at any temp below 32 and finish when it reach 40.
You can use the ICarsoft BMM V2.0 to read the transmission temperature. Run the engine until you reach 40C then add fluid until it starts to dribble out. Put the plug back in and done.
Hey man.. great video! Whats the phone app you have, is it carley? Also wondering about jack? Is it hf one? Please consider doing video on jack.. cheers!
Hello, nice video, thanks for sharing! One thing occurred me, you drained 6 l out and filled 6,8 l up. It means that you had an oil shortage all the time before the exchange? As you said the DCT is very sensitive of oil level then this situation could have cause some issue? What is your opinion? Thanks
I attributed 0,3-0,5 liters to the heavy soaked filters I pulled out. Even for the DCT's there is a tolerance for fluid. I'm guessing that +/- 0.5 liters of completely full level won't cause issues. I think by doing the ISTA adaptation, the levels allowed for a little more accuracy. If you want to see what difference 0.5l makes, with the pan off, put some fluid in the pan (level surface), note where the level is, then add 0.5l. You'll barely see a rise in level as the pan is so spread out.
@@bobmac1970 Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I don't have ISTA, I will have to operate very exactly with the oil amount. Only chance for me is to fill the same amount as is drained out. Since the car is on the lift, did you just have to put 2000RPM for 1 minute and try to refil? I'd much appreciate your feedback. Thanks.
@@bobmac1970 thanks for your feedback Bob. Still not quite sure when is the right time to start adding in more fluids, should I run the engine for 2 minute and add while the engine is running?
@@HanJooLee You have to check/add while the transmission is at the temps I stated in the video. If the tranmission temp goes above you must stop, wait, then redo when the trans temps are in the correct range. No need to wait 2 minutes.
Thanks Bob, I'm about to do mine. Did you take it out for a spin, going all the way through all the gears (10 secs/ gear)? Then top it up again? I'm wondering if ISTA is just removing that step from the process here? Awesome video. About to do the same in 135i DCT. I have a few questions if you don't mind Bob. 1. Did you do oil analysis on the old oil, what did it show? 2. Any adaptation, flashing the DME that we need to do with new oil. 3. About what went in vs what went out. You had 5L max at cold condition did you then replaced the fill plug, bring the temp to 40C, stop and fill it again do that till the it started to dribble or do you just leave the fill hose and keep pumping it without stopping the car till you see dribble. Is this procedure similar to doing Engine Coolant fill basically? 4. Is there such a thing as too much oil? 5. What app on your phone did you use to read the transmission temp? 6. Any noticeable different after you changed the fluid? Great video again.
You can actually have too much fluid. I did do an adaptation with ISTA after fluid change, but I don't think it was critical to do. I used Bimmerlink to measure the trans temperature. Could be a mental thing, but the shifts felt better after changing the fluid. Could be placebo effect though😅

Very hard to exmplain but maby you have a input on this. Very thanks. Regards very good video like alwayes :)
Hey Bob, how are you doing ? Sorry but I don't understand one thing, you flushed 6 liters and you were able (thank to ISTA) to put 6.9 liters back in. There is 1 liter of difference, so what's the thing ? Maybe I missed something you said... Thanks for your answer. Have a nice day !
So I pulled out a bit over 6 liters...I did accidently spill a small amount which isn't in the video. Using just the temperature, I got approximately 6 liters back in...but after performing adaptation and 'relearn' procedure then checking again, almost 1 more liter went in. My assumption was that the transmission may have been slightly underfilled originally. The ISTA method is the best way according to a BMW mechanic that commented here. I was surprised that another 0.9 liters went in too. Yours may not have a difference...but measuring before is a good idea to have a baseline.

is this dry clutch or wet clutch dct?
Are you able to do an German version pls?
where did you get ista+
what about the oil line and cooler??how you change the oil there??? good question ha??
Best bet is to raise the front of the car to allow the cooler to drain. It takes forever, but I've noticed quite a bit more oil between the 10minute drain point and 45minutes.
Did that pan fit with cover in place
Yes. It was important to me to put the cover back on.
Hi! My friend has a strange whine noise at 55-65km/h, on either 5th gear or 6th gear. And a bit of touch on the accelerator. It is very little strange noise. And if driving car to a stop from exampel 100km/h to a stop, when it downshift and comes to 6th gear and go in 5th gear it makes a fast little grinde/whine sound. Very hard to exmplain but maby you have a input on this. Very thanks. Regards very good video like alwayes :)
Same in here, did your friend fix it?
Is there a way to do this without ISTA ?
Yes, but I wouldn't. Put in what you took out gets you close, but it's not the way to do this job.
Doesn't look like the pan is still available.
Hey what was the Jimmy hendrix song playing?
I think it was imovie stuff...my daughter cut some of the first videos...I'll ask her :)
Hi bob !
Need your help . I didn’t change yet my fluid I have 60k miles on my car , after when I change my diff bushing for performance ones I heard some clunk when the car is in park position and I’m trying to put it R OR FROM N TO R . This is something like irregular clunk . When I’m driving everything is nice and smooth .
What I should do ?
Hi, Did you perform the ISTA transmission relearn procedure. After changing the fluid you should also do a two part adaptation. The transmission will go thru a 'clutch' adjustment process. This should hopefully fix your issue.
is the ista app just to know the temp of the trany or there is another reason for it
Also the re-adaptation of the trans after fluid change
@@bobmac1970 so if im using another scantool and following the procedures that you mantioned to fill the trans how i will be able to re adapt the trans and is the trans adaptation very important after filling the new trans fluid ? alos if i will be using the method of adding the same amount that it drained out of the trans is that will solve the problem bevause i can jack the car from the front that will help to add mor fluid im just confused with the ista and in the same time i dont want to damage my trans
@@fadeenanaa4495 I believe the re-adaptation helps remove air from the system. When I did it there were obvious clutch movement noises happening...that said, I'm not sure that it's 100% necessary, but I didn't want to take that chance
Bob Mac you definitely did the right steps thank you it was an amazing DIY
Did you purchase the ISTA D or you just download it free because I cannot find it for free 🙂
@@fadeenanaa4495 I purchased
what tool did you use to remove the dct filter cover after the snap ring?
I used a 90 degree needlenose plier. It's a llittle tricky but with patience it'll pop out
The oil pan design is unique. Looks like it's leaking =)
Hello. Do you still recommend Motul oil?. Did you have any problems with the gearbox.? I am asking because mechatronic gasket leakage in my M5. I will change the oil when I change the gasket. And I don't know which oil to choose, original or motul. Thanks
Yes. Make sure you use the Motul I recommend in the video though. I actually extensively researched the OEM (pentosin) vs the Motul. The Motul actually had better properties than OEM. Didn't have any issues. Are you going to just lower the transmission, or completely remove?
@@bobmac1970 I will try to replace the gasket by lowering or moving the gearbox. Only four bolts have limited access and I do not want to pull out the box just because.
@@malecki31 Makes sense. If you can find a Viton gasket, go with that instead of oem. They have better resistance to leaking
@@bobmac1970 I live in uk and i can get a vicon gasket or oem the price difference is not big about 10£. I think i will buy oem. The biggest difference is in oil. Motul is much cheaper than OEM and the specification is the same or better.
@@bobmac1970Hi I am just replacing the Mechatronic gasket. No need to lower or pull out the gearbox. The gasket and cover come out easily. I don't know what people write on the forums. Maybe in M3 you have to but not in M5. There is hard access to the top two screws but the right keys can be handled
So if your filter cloggs up your gonna put back in the same lifetime tranny fluid that came out when you change the filter? I think not
huh!!!...NO...the old fluid is only being measured, not put back in!
Thank you that video was very helpful because I like to service my cars my self for the quality control and the cost .thanks again
No problem. It's more satisfying to accomplish this yourself. Enjoy the crisp shifts! :)
Hi there . Love all your m5 videos . I have a 2014 m5 f10. Would love to purchase those m5 t shirts . God Bless.
My daughter found this somewhere on the web...don't know where. Sorry.
Maybe I should start marketing...lol.
High viscosity means less fluent and that results in high friction, noise and fragility of components in long term
i bought the burger motorsport oil pan, but it still get 8ltr not 8.9ltr!!!!
Bob underload at low gears (1,2) rollling on the parking lot i have some clunking noise from my dct , I think it happens underload at low speeds , do you know whats could be wrong with my dct ?
Have you done anything recently...ie fluid change or adaptation or tune etc
Bob Mac I switched the bushings before I had power flex bushings (they are more stiffer then oem ones) I went back to oem the clunk noise is quieter but still is there. Went with the car to dealership they said everything is ok and this is characteristic for that transmission which is hard to believe I had my car on the lift and the driveshaft have lot of play inside of the transmision there is any chance Ican send you the video on email and you can check that ? Thanks Bob !
Bob Mac and no I didn’t change fluid I didn’t do adaptation and also I never tuned my cAr
@@tobiaszdabkowski5450 You can try to do a 'relearn' and 'adaptation'...but it sounds like a mechanical issue. How fast are you going when it 'clunks'?
Bob Mac it’s usually clunk when I’m stoping my car at the traffic lights and transmission change the gear for first one and also I have loud clunking noise when I’m for example cruising at parking lot trying to find place for park then I’m on d1,d2 and between these two gears I have clunk , bang , pop noise . Up shifts smooth as butter just under load on low gears at low speeds lot of clunk and bangs
Good video, I'll be sure to use it as reference when I do mine.
The transmisson pan is definately high quality! I recommend replacing the plastic pan with the Mojo Power pan.
did the MOTUL did better than pentosin ?? i wants to change my transmisson fluid next week
I reviewed the actual technical data on both. The Motul was actually slightly better in a couple areas, while being cheaper too. It's personal preference though. If you feel safer with the Pentosin, I would fully understand.
@@bobmac1970 I saw that the Pentosin is full synthetic and the Motul is just partly synthetic you noticed this? still like the Motul oil? I will change the oil in a week or two
The Motul is fully synthetic. If you compare the data sheet, it's slightly better than Pentosin
@@jarnodejonge2073 The Motul is fully synthetic. You have to pick the correct Motul. If you compare the data sheet you will see that it's slightly better.
@@bobmac1970 you got a link of the correct Motul?
5 star for content
Thanks!
Bob where i can buy this gasket ? On ssp website cost more than Whole pan . Please send me part number or link
There's a seller on Ebay. He sells the Viton Gasket for $75. My pan also came with a Viton Gasket
Great vid thanks for sharing !!
You don't need ista just put 4ltrs in run car at 200rpm let car idle for a couple of minutes. This is to distribute oil in filters around the box. You then remove drain plug and you will get the full 6 litres in.
I'm super OCD...so I measured and used ISTA 😄
Are you still in Ktown?
In Arizona currently...
Anyone with DSG 7 speed dry clutch using this as gearbox oil? Because it is better than oem... (atleast by specs higher temp resistance)
One is brand new the other is old and dirty but nice and shinny.
Brilliant video! - Subscribed :)
great video thx!
You are supposed to tilt the car to get all the fluid in.
Where did you read this? It would be a first...for BMW
Hi... so how can order this pan? I've checked their website but no cart to purchase ! Do I contact them directly? And thank you for this channel... keep those videos coming and we'll be watching
htd-performance.com/en/744/
Hey Bob how much is this pan?
It's around $1000. I'm selling the blue anodized pan for $1200 if you are interested.
Bob Mac thanks a lot for the offer, but I wasn't expecting it to be this much $ ...
I thought the same...but I took a chance. I was afraid it would be cheaply made, but I was really surprised! I definately understand though...it's not cheap!
Nice video
Yikes that Mojo Pan cost $1,000! I ain't got that kind of mojo!
🤣
Duel bro not direct
LOL! Trying to do the job, record the job, then edit the job so folks get to see how it's done....yes I mispoke and said 'Direct' instead of 'Dual'....should I repent?
Good videos but please get another cam
I've been looking at other options. This was using my daughters Canon Photo Camera.
thanks
So I am supposed to trust someone who calls a DCT a "Direct Clutch Trans" nervousness aside.
lol...yes! I know it's a Dual Clutch Transmission...simply misspoke.
