The source of these ideas is the metaphysical literature of India, which is older than any Western philosophy, even Aristotle's.

Even descartes got it wrong: Animals do think and arrive to conclusions - this becomes evident if you observe their behaviour over a long period of time, especially if you have a dog (which lives in the house with you) with which your relate to for a long time and which you observe.
