    This was amazing. The level of detail. At first I was wondering what he was doing then I realized he was making buildings.
    As a creater.
    Then the woman showed up wearing what looked like a hospital gown. Then I realized he was creating a world for her.
    Such a beautiful story

      I thought the story was initially making a new world (so essentially a story about god), then I thought he was making a dream reality, then I thought he was making the after-life. Now I have no clue what exactly happened, but it's beautiful anyways.

    I'm the kind of person that really enjoys films that show futuristic user interfaces, so the first half of "World Builder" is just about as good as it gets for me. But as the film went on, I found myself wanting something more.
    A story.
    Here is where the magic happens, and in this film, one can see how minimal it can be, yet still completely change the viewer's experience. By simply adding a second character, carefully choosing their costume, and ending with a scene lasting less than a minute, what was originally a sterile demonstration of technology becomes a story of love.
    And that is why I love watching the films on this channel...

      Agreed, Ed. At first, appears as an experiment or proof of concept. Then, a beautiful woman appears, smiling with enjoyment and peace. Finally, the woman in a neuro ward, sound of a respirator, obviously suffering a brain injury. Very poignant and beautful.....loved it!

    Not a single word was spoken, and yet this had more meaning and emotional moments than some crazy expensive movie like Captain Marvel. DUST has some serious talent on doing this with their stories. I wonder if they will ever make an actual extended story, like a movie. I’d bet it would be AMAZING! @Gregory.....you're right. I lost my wife 3 years ago. She would have enjoyed certain images and taken any 'faults' as normal life, or ignored them. What I mean is, she would have focused on what she enjoyed and ignored the rest....even not seeing our daughter or I. She would have focused on the good and beautiful and accepted them as a gift from God. This was a wonderful film!

  • @tirsden
    @tirsden 4 ปีที่แล้ว +290

    I like how he worried about a mistake but she focused on the thing he kept going back to, and the thing he did the "most right." While I realize the mistake has plot implications (perhaps he doesn't want her to realize it's not real or even if she knows, he doesn't want to burst her bubble of happiness)... to me it speaks about game development in general. When a development team really cares about their product, you can tell, and can appreciate the game regardless of whatever negative issues it has... sometimes even to extremes, though there is definitely a line. I wish AAA companies that push their people too hard would understand this. Game creators can make things of immense beauty (even if the "beauty" is an action-packed gun-fest or a disturbing horror game), but when the priority becomes "SHIP IT OR ELSE," the project will often lose what it was meant to be, or its remaining fans have to dig deep to still find the value while less-understanding people bitch and moan.
    P.S. Unexpected-flat-green was a valid choice for that building snippet, there's an eccentric artist living there. :3

    • @ArizonaWillful
      @ArizonaWillful 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I used to work on such applications. Our company was bought out by a Donald Trump style corporate giant. Then the command came down to stop extensive documented testing prior to commercial release. We were told to let the customers work out the kinks for us. Wow. If you think your work has creative value and integrity, only to be told that it is merely a commercial product (which the parent company obviously does not respect), this can be devastating. It felt like telling Michelangelo to just focus on the main players on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and just rough in the rest with the same group endlessly repeated (like the background in 60's cartoon). That entire team of technical artists has now moved on. If classical music was a corporate product in the 18th century, Mozart, Bach and Beethovan would have given up and become house painters. As an asside, with the incredible precision of Classical music, I do think if these personalities had been born now, they would have gone into Information Systems Design and construction. Wouldn't it be fascinating if computer programs could sing? (OK, Boomer!).

    It is refreshing to see a gentle story told. We need more works like this! Highest compliments.
    I think we have missed something when we talk about how this video was made, when or by what method. Take a moment and enjoy the author's _story_ about a kind act. Does it really matter what kind of keyboard I used to type out this comment? (I hope not.) The same applies here. Sometimes we are too analytical when we observe. We use the heart less than we perhaps should. With that something is lost in ourselves.
    This was a short story about a kind act. That is refreshing. It warms the heart and soul.
    Thank you Bruce!

    When the countdown ended, part of me wondered if he spent all of that time making it, and then a whole bunch of gamer-soldiers were going to spawn in for a "death match" type FPS VR game and the whole street would end up destroyed. That would have been bittersweet with all the time he would have spent making it to seem so real just for it to be destroyed in a huge battle. Kind of how architects must feel when a city they helped build is destroyed during times of war, in real life.

    I am studying videogame design and development and that's a quite accurate way of explaining what the steps are to create a scene. A little bit more sci-fi than real life, but most of the tools used (randomization of trees and revolution of shapes) are there. There's usually a "flower" the creators like to add to the scenes when we have a good time (sometimes such a little detail that no one notices but makes the difference) such as a well or a car, for example. And also it's quite common that we have a reason why we create the scene as the story tells, art is on top of job and money.

    Honestly, I would LOVE to have a job just being the one to build worlds like that for VR game worlds that is indistinguishable from reality. I can't wait for VR tech to get to that point. Because I think physically building a world with your hands would be SO much more satisfying then doing it with a controller or a mouse and keyboard. Would most definitely give you that "god sim" vibe. Lol.

    As a regular user of Unreal Engine and Unity I have to say that the mechanics that are represented in this short are somewhat similar to what is done in those game engines, without the gestures...
    Also, awesome short!
