Actually, most of his paintings from the TV show are boxed up at Bob Ross Inc. headquarters per a recent news piece (a video is available on TH-cam). Some are going to be displayed in the Smithsonian but the rest are just in boxes in a storage room.

I have always been so inspired by Bob Ross. I started watching him years ago and still do to this day. I wrote to him, back when we still wrote letters and asked if I could have a signed photograph. Sure enough he honored my request and to this day I have a signed photograph of Bob Ross, I truly cherish it. I went on to study art in college and thanks to Bob's inspiration I now instruct my own art classes. Thank you Bob Ross!!!

That is fucking awesome!! I remember watching him as a very young child (im 30), and although i do not have a artistic bone in my body, i just absolutely loved his show. The people needs more Bob Ross' ... Not because we need more painters, but because we need more actual humanity... If aliens ever do come to earth, a Bob Ross video is probably the only thing that would keep them from wiping us out for the betterment of the universe.. lol

My grandmother learned to paint from watching Mr. Ross´s shows. She even sold a few of her paintings to restaurants around the area she lived in. He scared us everytime he would create a beautiful scene and then say and here's a happy tree... throwing a black line down the center of the canvas. We always thought, for a moment, that he had ruined the painting, but were always pleasantly surprised when he, did indeed, turn said tree, into a "happy tree." Bob Ross, we will miss you and all the joy you gave us through your paintings... and minor heart attacks from those happy trees!

    1. He never hid his finger, watch any one of his shows and you'll see it sticking through this Pallet.
    2. He always hated his perm, and only kept it because it was his trademark, and really couldn't change it.
    3. Another reason he never put his painting in a museum is because he said "museums are for art and artists, I'm not an artist's, I'm just a man who paints.

I remember back in 2002 I was a sophomore in high school and every summer I would tag along with my friend and his family to their summer home in New Smyrna, FL. We were avid skateboarders always. One day we skated this strip mall sort of place on a very hot day and at the end of it we saw a Bob Ross Workshops/Gallery sort of deal. We went in to cool down and see some paintings. I didn't know much about him or follow him at all but was blown away at the amount of work and the sheer vision and effortless looking style. A gentleman came up to ask if we needed assistance and I instantly said "Where is Bob? I'd love to talk to him." And the fellow just smirked and pointed his finger towards the ceiling and I said "Well is he upstairs?!" and he responded "He passed away son" and in my 15 year old head I dove deeper into them paintings and that moment has always stuck with me.

I was friends with a weed in my yard for a few months. Then one day my father mowed the lawn in an area that doesn't get mowed often and he killed the weed. I was horrified and ran around saying "have you seen my weed???" which probably disturbed my dad that his 4 year old was asking for his weed.

The reason why he gave away his paintings was to keep him prolific. I studied under an artist who taught the same philosophy. It was interesting to see that Bob Ross practiced the same thing. The idea was that, if you hold on to your art, you're less likely to produce more works. And selling them puts you in an entirely different mindset. The art is in the process of creation rather than the final product. I used to keep everything I drew and I was perpetually fighting creative blocks to produce. When gave them all away (I have none of my works today) it kept me inspired to continue to create. It really works.

I've never heard of this philosophy. I need to learn more. It certainly makes sense. I actually do want to sell some - and have done well for myself but people give me a hard time for the prices. Friends tell me I sell to cheap but when I bump the price up to what they say it's worth (time material skill) people will admire then pass it by.
It can be very frustrating because this is how i make my living. Maybe I should make some just to give away and sell the better ones. i don't know.

This will date me, but when I was young my mother took one of his classes. I remember because I was originally going to a friend's house. My little sister was at a sleep over, and I was going to spend an afternoon with friends, but plans fell through and I ended up begging my mom to let me come along.
We went and there was a waiting room, so I was going to stay there, but Bob said "Can you be very quiet?" and I said "I love watching you paint on tv, I paint with my mom all the time."
He set me up my own canvas. Let me use some of his spare brushes and paint boards. I used some of my mom's paints and I was just, so happy. I couldn't stop smiling the whole time. I been painting 'with' him on tv since I was tiny, now I got to actually paint with him in person, and with my mom too.
Until a couple years ago I had three paintings. One by him, my mom and me.. an accident at my apartment ruined two of them and I only have my mom's now.
I just always going to remember how he told me "put that smile on canvas and everyone will feel it."

David Stanley that us awesome. I am similar, in that, Ross helped me to learn a wet on wet style of painting, producing a faster painting.
I've been painting sice age 7 ,my mother taught me and also painted in oils and acrylics, her method was more of the old masters .. painting thin layers letting dry over days coming back and doing additional layers , details etc. when I was young thus was hell for my ADHD impatient mind.
      now I'm older, I don't mind my mother's method.
but back the Ross helped me to get it done ha ha
( mom used to be so irritated at Ross)

I always assumed that Bob replaced Bill "mighty brush" Alexander. The fact they were rivals is absolutely bizarre.

    • @don4321
      @don4321 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I had always thought Bill Alexander came WAY before Bob Ross. I even remember getting one of those large Grumbacher softback books way back in '79 on his technique and watched Alexander on PBS in 1980-82. Back then I never heard of Bob Ross at all. I even ordered some Alexander books, brushes and paining knives--which I still have to this day. Then I went to college and started doing abstract work, and stopped with the "pretty picture" landscape genre. The problem with this stuff is its all technique and only works for landscapes--you couldn't do figures or portraits with this, as that requires actual drawing skill. But still, Alexander was the original--in terms of technique, TV show and even products--too bad not many people know about him today as opposed to Ross! To put it bluntly, Bob Ross basically took every aspect of his method, style, delivery and even his art tools from Alexander! BTW, the Germanic Bill Alexander was WAY more entertaining than--in my opinion--the sleepy-weepy Bob Ross...

I first saw Mr Ross on PBS..now I watch him on NETFLIX. He is so amazing.
I recently went to a sip and paint. We had to paint a peacock. I thought about Mr Ross and the techniques that I have learned watching him the whole time. As we painted its like I could hear him telling me what brush ..stroke or angle to use My peacock came out beautiful. It is dedicated to him. It was my first serious painting.
I wish I could've met him. I will continue watching and learning from the Master.
Looking to the sky I see a palet of color and I know he is painting for the Lord .

I had the honor of meeting Bob in the early 80's in Fairbanks, Alaska. He was painting (just before Christmas) in the center of the mall I worked in while going to the university. I would watch him during my breaks. He painted, talked and was always interested in what I was doing. I was amazed at how he could carry on a conversation and paint the way he did. He made you feel great, he calmed you down just by his soft calming voice. He always had questions on what I was doing, he made you feel like a close friend.

I took my first "Bob Ross" class at my local craft store over 10 years ago and have been hooked since. I have to say that until then I didn't know who he was. I'm old enough but growing up, I remember every week watching Bill Alexander with my mom. We just loved him. Everytime he painted a tree we would say in unison "it's a happy tree" and years later as I now watch Bob Ross I say "you stole the happy phrase"! Don't get me wrong, I love Bob Ross but he's so much more well known then Bill so everyone credits not only wet on wet but "happy little clouds" and the like to him and don't realize that he only perfected the teaching of the method, he didn't invent it. Such a shame that Bill never got the recognition he deserved.

    • @Peteru69
      @Peteru69 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

I've seen a lot of alla prima painters in my time, Bob Ross might have mastered the 30 minutes speed painting version of a small landscape wet on wet, but I wouldn't say he mastered painting or alla prima. Commercial artist and teacher yes, master painter? Maybe not. And this isn't to bring him down, but to put things into perspective. I think the general public has a skewed view of what it means to be a master painter.
But I completely agree, Bill Alexander clearly taught him more than just how to paint. Bob did the same exact thing, just in a much more iconic way.

My kids can be screaming, crying, running, fighting through the house and the minute the channel lands on him everyone stops with mouths open and stares calmly at what he's doing.....magic. This is so true. the man wasn't what he portrayed himself to be on TV. I also think his paintings and method are for lazy Sunday wanna-be painters that are NOT artists. They are doing a hobby. These people sell their "works" cheap at art shows and under cut those artists who truly are talented. I used to be a selling portraitist and stopped once this crap stuff showed up and went in a new direction Thanks for seeing BR as he was.......a thief of ideas and paint formulas.

If you cant keep up with the market then that's your problem biter man.
and if these "armatures" are out performing you then frankly you'll be the hobbyist sooner or later..
find a niche or get another source of income and stop complaining.
if you do this shit for a living then frankly you should have studied more then just classical art so you had a more marketable ability like 3d animation or some qualifications to work as a teacher.
aesthetics alone cant put food on your table... hell historically most artists live in poverty then finally get recognition after they are dead and buried... so you have no basis for complaint!

    Awesome job guys!
I'm an artist. My very first grown up painting was in 1985, I was 6. It was a Bob Ross home kit. Vhs, canvas, paints and instructions.
Changed my life. I love Bob Ross. RIP

It took me a second to realize why this sounded weird, when you said he sold paintings on the inside of novelty gold pans. You said the object as two words, which brings to mind golden pans, but rather these were (most likely at least, I guess don't know for sure) gold pans for goldpanning; panning for gold like a prospector!
I mean, I don't know if there's really any correction to make there, it just sounded confusing at first.

      Oh, thank you!
Now I get it! I was rather confused about the whole "gold pan" thing too.
Painting on actual gold didn't seem like a Bob Ross type of hobby.

I remember watching him for the first time when I was flipping through channels in elementary school, he painted a landscape with such ease... RIP
