It was so good. I watched the original series before 97 since I never saw it before and gave me an appreciation for it. 97 rocked, loved Nightcrawler too. I met the cast of 97 as well. I can't wait to see more!
Just an incredible season of storytelling. While the show itself has a lot to live up to as it heads into its second and third seasons, I feel bad for whoever is tackling the X-Men in live-action. As excited as I am for Deadpool/Wolverine, X-Men '97 to me just really showcased just what the live-action X-Men movies had failed to do over 20 years of films. Yes, Logan is a fantastic film, Oscar-Worthy and all that, but '97 really was the first time in a LONG time they we just saw PURE X-Men; not Wolverine and the X-Men, or Charles & Erik and the rest: I mean THE X-Men. With each team member getting his/her/their time to shine, and for the most part, getting great character moments and arcs. When I rewatch the X-Men movies, as enjoyable as some of them are, it really does irk me how little of the TEAM dynamic is in the films, as they either chose focus squarely on Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, or the Charles/Erik dynamic. For as much flack as the MCU has gotten recently, I can't deny how much of a good job they have done developing their characters, particularly the ones who would become the primary Avengers. Granted, the MCU has the benefit of having individual movies or shows devoted to singular characters, but I really hope that when they do inevitably tackle the X-Men, they're able to learn the lessons from the success of this show, and what they've done successfully in the past with some of the movies/shows, and give us real depth to the X-Men as a team. Treat their plight as something truly palpable, and get us invested. Unlike damn near every other superhero team, the X-Men isn't just a team for the sake of the superheroics; they actually are about something. It's not just about going out and saving lives; they're fighting for their own survival, for a mission of acceptance. That's a heavy theme that a lot of the other Marvel heroes (or comic book heroes in general) don't really get to tap into. The MCU has an incredible blueprint here with '97. Hoping they can look at it, take the right lessons from it, and incorporate it to not only the X-Men, but their future projects as whole in terms of how to properly develop their characters and tell their stories with gravitas.
I mean this in the nicest way possible. Once you get 100k and you get your video essay voice, you’re gonna look back at these videos and be like “oooo 😬 did I really sound like that??” That’s not a diss to you now. Just a compliment to your future.
I ended up watching the entire original show before watching this and I agree this is a great follow-up. It reproduces what made the original series great, while also successfully updating the show for its audience with a now diverse in age fanbase. Plus there is more room to breath with it not being an a broadcast television station. I know I am pretty much repeating a lot of what you said, but in a time where reboots to capture nostalgia is so common, it is nice to see one done with as much thought and respect to the original while also making it feel fresh and new at the same time. I'm looking forward to seeing what the future seasons have to bring.
As someone who didn’t grow up with the original X-Men show (being a 2000s kid and all) I can whole heartedly say that X-men 97 has become my favorite piece of superhero media since Avengers Endgame. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, and I was strapped in all the way for what it would throw at me. 100/10, can’t wait for season 2
Just want to add: “Batman The Animated Series” elevated animated comic adaptations to what they are today. It deserves a spot on the Mt. Rushmore of great animated adaptations.
I’ve had to point this out on multiple peoples videos, so you’re not alone, but this isn’t 3D animation. This is fully 2D animation, but they use 3D tools to assist in perspective for certain shots and that gives the animation a 3D feel at times. Look up the Disney movie The Great Mouse Detective to get an idea of what I’m talking about. It’s usually wrongly given credit for the first CGI use in a Disney feature, but it’s not CGI. It’s computer assisted animation.
Best show ever. Nobody mentions hiv aids romance without physical contact rogue and gambit. Eric magnus Farrakhan Nat turner summers. Professor Charles Malcolm Xavier Henry Martin king McCoy I love how not subtle Stan Lee was in his names. Great action Awe inspiring delivery of historic dialogue. Jubilee pregnancy
"This should be the standard for superhero animation" I completely understand the sentiment, but trust me, they pumped in a metric butt-ton of money to make it look as good as it does. It's not a standard most animation studios could match with any hope of ever breaking even on costs.
As a long-time X-Men fan and fan of the original series, even though I wasn't born when the show was around, HOLY S*** , THIS SERIES IS EXCEPTIONAL (pun intended). No joke, this series is so masterfully well written, with absolutely phenomenal animation and truly compelling characters and complex, deep, dark themes that genuinely make you question the inherent societal bigotry and how to process internal thoughts of fighting for equality and how to do so in a way to help society grow from the status quo of discrimination and to do more than allow yourself to become numb to a neverending struggle that you feel like isn't your responsibility. Truthfully, this series is some of the *BEST MARVEL MEDIA WE'VE EVER SEEN SINCE ENDGAME* (except No Way Home, GOTG3 and Loki)! They truly did my man Cyclops JUSTICE. No joke, in just a couple episodes, this show singlehandedly showed people why Scott is the first X-Men and why he is the true leader of the X-Men. I have dreamt of a day when an X-Men project finally gave my man the spotlight he deserved and oh my god this Cyclops is everything Ive wanted in the character where we see his compassion and eagerness to be a good leader and a good father but also see how much he's hurting inside from having to unknowingly fall in love with a clone of wife, get said clone pregnant and be forced to send his son to the future and attempt to reconnect with his son in the future, which is a lot for any man to handle. Understandably, you can see his complex emotions affect him, but still never compromises what he's fighting for and how he is not just fighting for Charles's vision but also ensure Magneto's fears don't come true as a perfect balance of both sides Compared to how phenomenal this series was, Fox movies seem like amateur student films with such a bare-bones understanding of how truly incredible and insane the X-Men stories can be when you truly hire people who care about these amazing characters. After watching this show and its epic finale, Bastion became one of my favourite X-Men/Marvel villains. Theo James especially gave a superb performance as Bastion; now, whenever I read a comic featuring Bastion, I'll hear his voice. Not only him but the entire voice cast, especially for Cyclops, Magneto, Storm, Jean, Charles, Gambit, Rogue, Jubilee, Wolverine, Morph, and Nightcrawler, all did a tremendous job. Bro; the number of cameos in this series is insane! Cyclops and Jean saying goodbye to Cable/Nathan had me in tears🥺. 10/10 SEASON 1 I NEED A SEASON 2 NOW!!!
Bruh, *PLEASE* stop apologizing for (un)intentional puns. Never apologize. Have no shame. Let the "comedy police" groan, knowing there is nothing they can do about it.
X-men 97 has entered the goat chat of tv shows and I couldn’t be more happier. I grew up with the original and it was ahead of its time. This adaptation though is on another level.
There is one nit pick about The animation i have. I dont like when they put the anime gimmicks in those animations: they are too obvious to see and are hyper unnatural.
Like and subscribe to keep me busy so I don't go insane waiting for the next season of this incredible show
Such an Xcellent show. Can't wait for season 2
Before this video started, I got an X-Men '97 ad😭
LMAO that’s a fun coincidence
Man, if you watched the og series when you were younger, this was so special. Everything you enjoyed about it just grew up
This revival goes to show what happens when a team cares about their product and the material they’re bring forth

I loved x-men 97 it was really amazing and huge fan of the x-men this show gave me everything I ever wanted which makes me so happy in my opinion.
Great review man! This is definitely one of Marvel's greatest things they've produced, really looking forward to Season 2!

X-Men Grand Design is a perfect book for newcomers to the classic X-Fam that want to catch up on the good stuff before the 2000s.

DAMMIT I could just feel that I missed one and this is it, BTAS absolutely deserves its place there
Xmen og generally considered number 2 behind btas. Now xmen 97....3 seasons of the quality and 97 will be top

Very good to know and makes the animation even more impressive!
I'm still depressed about Gambit idc.
I will never emotionally recover from that
