This was my first proper jump on Maverick in I don’t even know how long! I’d forgotten just how much fun he is and how much he enjoys it! We kept the jumps small, and to be honest I’m not planning on making them any bigger over the next few weeks, because we both seem to enjoy this height and the whole point of loaning this pony is to have a bit of fun, not push ourselves to the limit every ride! Keeping them smaller also meant I could work on Maverick’s (and my) approach to the fences, as he likes to get a bit long and rush into them, but after a few dodgy strides I realised I could actually sit him back onto his hocks in the canter more than I thought, and we ended up having a few really nice jumps where the fence came to us, rather than us panicking at the last second and clambering over it.
I hope you enjoy the grooming & tacking up part - I know some of you have been asking for this kind of thing for years!! The GoPro battery just about lasted long enough to capture the getting ready, lesson and post-lesson bits & bobs!

🔵 DO YOU OWN THE HORSES & PONIES IN YOUR VIDEOS?
No, all the horses & ponies belong to a lovely riding school, or are working liveries at the same yard.
🔵 WILL YOU EVER GET YOUR OWN HORSE?
I would love to own a pony one day, but for now I am more than happy having weekly lessons on the fantastic riding school horses & ponies.
🔵 WHY DO YOU ALWAYS JUMP THE SAME HEIGHT?
These riding school ponies usually jump more than once a week, and sometimes more than once a day, so we don’t jump ‘big’ except on special occasions to ensure the ponies stay sound and live long, happy lives. Fence height has very little to do with jumping technique or experience.
🔵 HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN RIDING FOR?
I’ve been having weekly lessons in riding schools for 16 years now!
🔵 IF YOU’VE BEEN RIDING FOR SO LONG, WHY DON’T YOU COMPETE?
I have no personal interest in competing or jumping huge tracks. I ride for fun, simple as that!
🔵 WHY ARE THE HORSES ALREADY TACKED UP WHEN YOU APPROACH THEM?
This is a busy riding school & livery yard and so the lesson horses are tacked up by the staff who work there to ensure they are ready to leave the yard on time and have been tacked up correctly.
🔵 DO THE HORSES STAY TACKED UP 24/7?
No. The horses are only tacked up right before their lessons and spend the rest of their time turned out in grass fields.
🔵 WHO IS ROBIN FROM YOUR VIDEOS?
Robin is my mum and she rides with me in my lesson every week. She's 64 and fearless as ever!

Lovely photo. I love how maverick has a stable buddy. QOTD: Has to be the body for brushing. Quite easy to do. The one I don't like is the picking the feet out. I find it difficult

My favorite part of grooming is the soft brush. I have a lovely goat hair one that does just the trick. I love running it over her neck watching it smooth and shine the hair, it makes her look so pretty.

QOTD: I just love grooming in general it’s really relaxing for both me and my horse, but I love picking feet especially when they are packed and you just pick it out all in one 🤩

AOTD: Both of my ponies have long manes (ones a cob, the other a highland) so I find it so satisfying to brush them out and plait them! One of my ponies is only five so isn't too keen on getting her feet picked, therefore it is a proper arm workout for me! I also love brushing the mud off with a magic brush as it is so satisfying,, just not satisfying when the mud leaves yellow marks on your grey pony! 😫😂
That's so interesting, I've never seen picking hooves into a bucket before!
Saves sweeping up afterwards, or the horse stepping directly back into what you’ve just picked out! 😊
Mav reminds me of a pony I used to ride.
He's still alive, and I still ride at the same school as him, but I've outgrown him. They look very similar, and their attitudes are the same 😂 You're so lucky to have him, I wish you the best in the future!

I love brushing the mane/tail (even if I don't get to do it often), picking out hooves is also super satisfying, but I love using a magic brush to quickly remove dirt 😂

QOTD: I've not groomed a pony/horse since I was a child and did some extra work around the stables. I had my own grooming kit.
Now that I'm an adult and at a different riding centre, the staff actually do all the grooming and tacking up. But I would like to be able to offer to help tack up and stuff.
Thats why I am so keen to be able to loan twice a week, like you, so I can gain that experience again.
QOTD: when I rode regularly (over 10 years ago, I’m sad to say), my favorite part of grooming would be using bristled brushes on the schoolhorse I rode because I liked hearing the *flick flick* sound 😂
Honestly I think I enjoyed grooming the horses more than the actual ride haha

They are Dublin Cool-it tights - really comfy but I find the silicone seat a bit too sticky! The Shetland is called Miss Chips 😊

QOTQ: my favorite part of grooming is the feet with most horses but there is this really nasty horse at my riding school (I love him tho he is my favorite) and my fav part of grooming with him is the dandy brush.

AOTD: I think my favorite part of grooming is when the last of the horse’s winter coat falls off, their coat is all pretty, and it finally isn’t NEVER ENDING! 😂
Question, are you guys still taking lessons?
Another question for literally anyone who wants to answer: is it easy for you to transition from horses to ponies, or ponies to horses? What makes it difficult, and what do you do to make it easier? I’ve rarely ridden ponies, even when I was younger, and now I’m starting to ride a small horse, who is pony sized, and I’m having some trouble using my lower leg on her, since it seems like I can’t touch her sides, even though I can 😂

We’re not taking lessons while we’re loaning (unfortunately that would be breaking the lockdown rules if we still wanted to ride together in a lesson with an instructor), but we will be back to lessons when this lockdown is lifted ❤️
Does the Shetland stay with Mavrick in the stable overnight , no hate I’ve just never seen a Shetland stable buddy I’ve seen goats and sheep ?
Yes she does, but it’s an enormous stable (looks smaller on the GoPro) so they can both still have their own space, and they get on very well 😊
Can we have more footage at the start of your videos of you tacking up? It actually kind of helps me when I go for my lessons because we are made to tack up before our lesson to teach us horse care and teach us how to be better riders it’s great but I really struggle with doing my girth and getting my stirrups on the right number T~T
Unfortunately most of the time my GoPro battery doesn’t last long enough for the grooming, tacking up and whole ride!

Yes she’s there to keep him company as Maverick has limited turnout compared to the rest of the horses x

The Pony is his stable mate so he doesn’t get lonely and he is 13.2 as said in the description! I’m not sure how old he is x

I forgot to comment on the other video, but the spook Mav put in after that gallop was tremendous. He's almost as bad as Roger lol. I bet its nice for you and your mum to have a bit more freedom on what you want to do riding wise?
Mavericks not normally one to spook (at least not dramatically) so it took me a bit by surprise! Yes we’re really enjoying choosing what we want to do each day, although it’s definitely sometimes nice having an instructor to make decisions for you!

I can answer those for you!
1. Yes, its super fun to ride, and if you're like me, it can be a little scary sometimes!
2. Um.. I've never owned one, so I couldn't say.
3. Yes, grooming is horse is easy, the hardest part is picking out the feet because you have to be careful to not stab the frog, a sensitive spot of their foot!
And 4. Its hard at the start because its so bouncy, but it gets easier as you gain the muscle!

Just wondering, you can actually jump on your own without a trainer at your barn? Because here, unless you have your own horse and/or you're qualified, they don't let you jump without an instructor present 🤔 even if you're over 18 and loan a horse (been there lol). So idk if it's a barn thing or a whole country thing (I live in Italy)... Jealous!
Yes you are allowed to jump without a trainer present, although the rules definitely vary from yard to yard, especially regarding people under 18 😊
QOTD: my favourite part has to be picking out feet but only the fronts as my pony always farts when I do the back every time 😂. Apart from that probably the magic brush!

That’s the larger pony’s companion. Usually they are in the big barn together with other horses, but when the grey pony has to go into an individual stable for any reason, his Shetland friend comes with him to keep him happy & calm xx
