- This is the second of my two cross country lessons! I decided to go again after my first lesson so I could jump a few of the slightly bigger jumps (I know, I know, they’re still quite small for lots of you guys!) and with an instructor who knows the horses & riders really well - this meant that I we could link a few more fences together and try some more challenging lines/jumps to build on what we’d done the week before with a different instructor, where we kept everything quite small & steady. It was so nice to go again so quickly, and on the same pony, because it gave me a very rare opportunity to actually continue on from the previous lesson and keep improving, as usually I have to wait months in between XC lessons and end up starting from scratch each time! Roger was feeling great once again and, other than a little mad moment at the brush fence, was such a confidence booster for me as always! I let him down a couple of times with my dodgy steering, but I’m so out of practice with linking fences together it’s unreal!! I say it all the time but Roger is easily my favourite to ride for jumping and especially cross country, because he’s so much fun and I can always rely on him to get me out of trouble, but at the same time he still presents challenges that really allows me to focus on riding him accurately (because when I don’t, as you can see, I end up on the floor) 😂

I don’t know if I’ll go cross country schooling again this year, I’ll have to wait and see if the yard are doing another session in the autumn, and if I go it might not be on Roger again as I think I was quite lucky to get him twice in a row here (he’s a popular pony as I’m sure you can imagine!), but I’m just very grateful to have got out at all this year after everything that’s going on in the world!

🔵 DO YOU OWN THE HORSES & PONIES IN YOUR VIDEOS?
No, all the horses & ponies belong to a lovely riding school, or are working liveries at the same yard.
🔵 WILL YOU EVER GET YOUR OWN HORSE?
I would love to own a pony one day, but for now I am more than happy having weekly lessons on the fantastic riding school horses & ponies.
🔵 WHY DO YOU ALWAYS JUMP THE SAME HEIGHT?
These riding school ponies usually jump more than once a week, and sometimes more than once a day, so we don’t jump ‘big’ except on special occasions to ensure the ponies stay sound and live long, happy lives. Fence height has very little to do with jumping technique or experience.
🔵 HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN RIDING FOR?
I’ve been having weekly lessons in riding schools for 16 years now!
🔵 IF YOU’VE BEEN RIDING FOR SO LONG, WHY DON’T YOU COMPETE?
I have no personal interest in competing or jumping huge tracks. I ride for fun, simple as that!
🔵 WHY ARE THE HORSES ALREADY TACKED UP WHEN YOU APPROACH THEM?
This is a busy riding school & livery yard and so the lesson horses are tacked up by the staff who work there to ensure they are ready to leave the yard on time and have been tacked up correctly.
🔵 DO THE HORSES STAY TACKED UP 24/7?
No. The horses are only tacked up right before their lessons and spend the rest of their time turned out in grass fields.
🔵 WHO IS ROBIN FROM YOUR VIDEOS?
Robin is my mum and she rides with me in my lesson every week. She's 64 and fearless as ever!

i ride a pony called tiny and i all ways do loud breathing when i am canter ing with my mums friend and i am only 7years old and tiny is a boy and he is 17 years old
QOTD: for me drop fences are ok but up fences(?) are kinda scary because my pony literally runs me INTO the jump 😂 its a rare occasion for me because I’m usually a fairly confident rider.
Also is this the same cross country course you did all your other cross country lessons on(Herbie and roger)? It looks different/smaller but I might be wrong

Equine Lil It’s the same XC course, but this is the much smaller training field rather than the main course up the top (there are mostly only 80cm+ fences up on the main course and a couple of people on this lesson had never been XC schooling before, so we stuck to the training field!)

I love how aware roger is when he is jumping - like for a split second he takes a look at the jump and is like ‘right lets get over this’ 😂😂 hope you’re alright after that fall btw x
Absolutely! He’ll never jump a fence blindly, he’s very cautious about what he does/doesn’t feel comfortable jumping every single ride (but unfortunately for us humans the fences he does/doesn’t like change all the time!) 😂 x

Roger reminds me so much of my horse when we used to compete, he would convince me he was definitely going to jump, then bailed at the last second 😂. It used to get my every time!

I fell off twice yesterday and I was having flashbacks when you fell off😂 but I think we all know that moment when you are not on the place where you’re supposed to be when you are riding and you are like; Shit the ground is coming nearby really fast😬😂

I do XC, but it's only a couple jumps, barrels, tires, and a log in a small, enclosed paddock.
It's really nerve wracking (for me, at least) but I'd love to do it in an open field like this! Hope you're ok after the fall xx

This was an amazing video! I have actually never done XC! Sadly, I won't have any opportunity to for the near future as the XC jumps in the fields of the riding school are being taken away! You looked like you had an amazing time (minus the fall)!

Roger really really loves his job you can tell. He is happy and while a bit spooky he is very confident. I love seeing him.
For the QOTD: I havent done many drop fenses but i was riding my training project bareback and we went to down and i went from on his back to on his neck from his efforts.... then he got mad and I nearly fell. The ride was a simple walk around because he is.... very fat ... so his neck being very thick with fat is the only reason I didnt fall.

I always love watching cross country but it scares me to actually do it. I ride a really clumsy horse and the solid jumps are just scary for us lol
I really only enjoy cross country on the more nimble/quick footed ones, it’s never enjoyable when you think you might go into or through the fence, rather than over it!

QOTD: I’ve only ever done a drop down once and that was by accident 😅 it was my first year at camp and the pony I was on got a little fright and jumped it...I was petrified cause I was only like 9 or 10 and to me that jump was massive😂😂

Not as bad as it looked fortunately! The GoPro moving definitely made it look worse than it was, in reality I just sort of flopped pathetically and rolled 😂
I have added a GoPro and helmet GoPro thing to my basket because you have inspired me to make GoPro vids mine won’t be as good as yours because I have a very stubborn horse but at least I don’t have to worry about my parents only filming tiny segments
I was told to change my riding day to monday so have done, just easier for the stables with monday being the busiest day. Rode Silver last week and he wasn’t as bad as he can be but I’m told everybody who rides him is too soft and they let him get away with all sorts, I don’t have it and he knows it. I can always tell when he is about to do something unacceptable so before he does it I give him a firm ahah and he responds and goes oh better not.

do you have any tips on riding in this heat?
If possible I would definitely recommend riding in the mornings to avoid the heat of the day, but if that’s not possible, just make sure you drink lots of water and keep the ride nice and simple - there’s no point in pushing yourself or the horse in hot weather when you’re not used to it and risking heat stroke/exhaustion. Take lots of short breaks, preferably in the shade if you’re riding outside, and if you or the horse become too hot/tired, just call it a day and go & cool off, there’s always another day! 👍

I definitely fall off XC more than any other time, but I’ve only come off XC 5 times in 15 years of riding 🤷🏼♀️ Not sure that’s particularly funny, but there you go.

I would if I were competing or schooling over larger/more complex fences, but at this level I’d much rather be comfortable and just dress for the weather. I’ve personally never once fallen in a way that’s ended up with me getting scraped, long sleeves or not, so it’s really just down to rider choice and what each individual is comfortable with 😊 x
