I made a video how to combine 1/4 inch bits and 4 m bits with a Hex5 Allen key using a PB Swiss Tools adapter.
    Slightly heavier, but infinitely extendable.
You could even carry some spare bits...
I love the Essential 8 as well and will soon test my screwdriver hack kit against the Essential 8.

There is a satisfaction thats hard to describe when you have the right muliti tool that gets you out of a jam far from the trailhead

You are a man after my own heart. I've got at least half a dozen multitools kicking around.
And I've been caught out once or twice with a tool that's missing an essential item. Like a 2mm or 2.5mm allen to deal with lock on grips. And, more recently, a Torx bit to adjust my brake calipers.
It's definitely a good idea to check every bolt on your bike to make sure whatever you decide to carry has everything you need. For me that's a Topeak Mini 9. All the rest are relegated to home maintenance tasks.
    Cheers

I was the one suggesting carry a set of separate allen wrenches, I get plenty of little bags from my wife, such as jewelry holders, they weigh almost nothing but hold the allens and torx and other small items securely in the seat bag. I agree a separate 8mm is getting too heavy and you are right, if you drop the 2mm in the woods you will likely not find it. The other advantage, and you mentioned, is I have cut some to meet specific access to hard to reach bolts. I love the Daysaver - never saw it before. At $50 it is crazy expensive but tempting for the cool factor. Check out the PWC Pebble, unique in it adds a Dynaplug tool. You're not a real "toolman" cyclist if you don't have at least as many unused multi-tools in the box as used on the bike!

Hah! Great idea. I guess I am a real “tool man” then.

Gedore makes some “lighter” single open end wrenches.
“Old school” and “budget” bikes will have 15mm axle nuts.
The Gedore wrenches are much lighter than a Craftsman combination wrench.
I’ve also carried Park cone wrenches with me because I had issues with the cone nuts coming loose on a couple bikes.
I think this was partly because I usually transport inside my Corolla with one or more wheels off depending which bike I take and how many of them.
I have converted some to quick release axles wherever possible.
I also usually have a bag of sorted Allen or torx keys omitting what doesn’t fit the particular bike.
I generally ride 15-25 miles and often away from home. I don’t have the “phone a friend” option, so I have to carry enough to get myself home.
I don’t nitpick grams, but I am trying to find lighter and more compact options.
I like the concept of multi-tools or tools that serve multiple functions.
But as an aircraft mechanic, if found that some are just gimmicky and aren’t a substitute for a real tool.
Many also cost a lot, and a bag of Allen keys is more budget friendly since I tend to outfit each bike instead of swapping stuff around.
In the 80’s I just varies vise grips clipped on the seat and a Swiss Army knife in my pocket.
A couple of items in the video may find their way into my gear 🤔
    Great video
    👍😎

Remember Cool Tool with the adjustable wrench? I still carry one in my water pack. I used the adjustable a few weeks ago to help a guy on the trail with a really really cheap bike. No Allen screws for the handlebar clamp and cheap seat clamp. The adjustable helped him out. I had just been contemplating retiring. 😅

I had one of those. Funny you mentioned it. A guy had one on the group ride today. I had forgotten about them and mine is missing on the ash heap of time.

You made me chuckle with the comment about how you carry that nested wrench on your road bike. Glad to know I'm not the only one who prioritises minimalism over function on the road. (And chonkier tools on the gravel and MTB)

mini shock pump on the Blackburn tool. I have several multi-tools as well. Recently discovered I need to start carrying more Torx bits for disc brake caliper repairs and random bolts on newer bikes. So slowly buying more multi tools. Sometimes I'm riding with my older multi-tools with a single loose torx wrench rubber banded to the multi-tool.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner! I wonder if that shock pump actually works?
