Really cool to see James on the channel again. What a treat to have a former professional and current golf coach as your caddy. Plus he's such a good guy
Probably one of the best videos on the channel. Getting an insight into James’s thinking behind every shot is incredibly valuable. Would love to see more of this.
Can we get a series out of this??! We can all benefit so much James' experience, mindset and overall approach to every shot. Nice to see you grind Rick, progress is already showing up, keep up the hard work!
James is so positive and Rick talks himself out of the shot before he’s played it (“135, that’s not a great distance for me”, etc). I’m a complete hacker but my biggest issue is the mental side - I shoot +12 on my own, I shoot +16 with friends and I’m a 24 handicapper because I fall apart when it matters. My mindset with every shot on a “proper” round is “don’t cock this up!” ….. no wonder it’s bad 🙄. We’ve all seen Rick suffer with his mental side and I really sympathise - I would love to see some videos where Rick talks to someone who can help him with the mental side. Good luck Rick 👍
Great comment 100% agree. Seriously considering going to see someone about the mental side myself. Would love it if Rick could shine a light on this side of game improvement.
Yeah just face the facts.. Rick doesn't have the attitude of a winner. He can sure play good golf but I've been rarely watching him lately cause he such a bummer. You never get the feeling Rick is gonna get the job done, whatever it may be. I do love James though so I never miss one where he makes an appearence!
One of the best golf videos I've watched. Really interesting as a new golfer to understand the thought process of better golfers. Would like to see more vids like this
love james! he's such a good caddie. always talks positive, but also in a tone of voice that makes everything seem like it's your idea or your thoughts and not him imposing his own. such class!
I so wish that James could be on the bag for you at qualifying, I think he mellows you out/keeps you with such a level head so well. Good luck in qualifying, so excited to see how it plays out!
Ricks fear of chipping is killing his game. Arguing with a former tour pro on the first hole about putting off the fringe really show ricks horrible headspace around the green. He needs to just commit, until he gets over his fear.
Rick: the flag is 184 into the wind so I'm flighting this 7i right at it!!!! James: put the club down. Take this 5i, choke down an inch and aim away from the flag and hit the center of the green...
It's amazing isn't it...the very fact that Rick doesn't realize this is amazing....him being a PGA Pro, Gives/gave lessons all the time, and has a long history in the game. He just doesn't know how to play many shots....or which shots he should be playing and you'd expect that part to be his biggest positive with all the experience and everything....but it just isn't.
@@RhinoViper There's a big difference being a PGA Pro teaching swing mechanics and the basics to beginner and intermediate players vs. a PGA Tour Pro training to think their way around any golf course. That's why Rick is getting this help from James. He knows where his skills are lacking whether physical or mental and is, I believe, genuinely trying to improve.
@@cmaterick Well, for sure he's trying to improve...but his course management is about as bad/basic as it gets...not good at all...I don't expect him to be a Tour player, but it's just bad...he has a ton of experience, plays all the time, plays with pros all the time, played in tournaments in his earlier career...but his course management and the things he does wrong are things he just shouldn't be doing wrong.
@@RhinoViper I'm not defending his course management skills or lack there of. I'm just saying being a PGA Pro doesn't automatically mean you have good course management. I know several PGA Pros that barely even play golf. They spend so much time teaching it that they have little interest in playing it. Same with several USTA Pros I know around here who avoid playing tennis any more. More of a "don't be surprised if there are facets of the game your instructor isn't good at" comment is what I was getting at.
@@cmaterick To be a pro, at some point you had to be relatively good....generally you understand the game well enough to not look like a rookie when you play a round.
One of the best videos you guys have done. The amount of focus being given to shots was brilliant and shows how much this means to you. James is great for holding Rick to account when he didn’t follow his normal pre shot routine, and Rick listens to him which shows the trust they have between each other. Fair play to you Rick and good luck. Hopefully see you again at next years college alumni day!
It seems like this practice round was more about trying to correct your technique instead of learning the golf course. Your coach nailed a few things early. 1) You have to stay in the moment. The shot in front of you is the only one that matters. 2) You have to trust your pre shot routine and do it consistently. I would also say that your practice swings need to resemble the shot you’re about to hit. Especially with the short game. Use the rehearsal swings to capture the feel then step up and repeat it. Oh, and stop saying “you can’t miss greens” and start saying “I must hit greens”. The difference is subtle but powerful. Just my thoughts, good luck. You can absolutely do this!
Love the video and everything you produce Rick! Rooting for you to play well, and just want to say I appreciate all the work you do to give us all such great content week after week. It never goes unappreciated!!! Love having James on here to hear his insights. He is a great golfer and a great person. Great video, stay happy out there!! No matter how you play, just have fun!!!
Its amazing how pretty much every golfer I play with talks about watching Rick, and how much they take from his videos, even the ones (possibly especially the ones) where he struggles. James is such a positive and experienced guy. Just love watching the pair of them (and Guy).
Rick! I love the content lately! The short game lessons have actually helped me a lot too with just being more consistent. I’m currently just breaking a 10 handicap I’ve been at for years and this content is a big reason why among others. I wish the best for you at Open Qualifying and moving forward. You’ve got it, just got to put the pieces together now. Btw, this video was some of the best driving I’ve seen from you in a long time! Love to see it! James, I love the attitude, having a good hype man helps build the confidence that Rick has been seeming to be missing for so long now! Great Job guys !
James is brilliant and he knows how to get it round and bring it back to the task in hand. Rick: "Let's finish birdie-birdie" James: "Where's your aim, just left of it?" and loads of other examples here we can all learn from. More James on the channel please!
I learned quite a few things from this video: - work out the wind well before you hit the course - aim small, miss small - carry sudocrem Loved this video so much! Go Rick! Qualify!
Great video. Proud of you for doing this Rick! I appreciate you and will be rooting for you no matter what happens. Your content has grown my appreciation for golf and inspired me to keep playing.
Really enjoyed seeing Rick practice a course! Even though he didn’t have the best round, it’s refreshing to see him out to learn and get better. Keep working Rick, loving the positive attitude on the course!

Rick is really lucky to have a friend like James and we are lucky this was filmed! Really great insight on how to play any course and approach various shots.
This is genuinely a great video. So interesting to see a low handicap player like Rick. Get tips, help from a former tour pro in all the aspects of the game you don't think about as a newish golfer myself. The tip on having the face so open on tbe chip onto the green roughly midway through is something i never think about. I just get a 60degree out and just stab at it almost lol
You are doing amazing. One thing I was always told, visualise your best shots, remember going round The Old course in Par, remember your good bunker shots.... When you play your A game you will break Par on any course..... Just remember you're in the top 1% of all golfers
Great to hear some player-caddie conversations! James provides some good additional insight for higher level play. But Rick, a fine example where your swing needs loads of work is your second shot on the first hole, under pressure you will always be destined to hook the ball. Hands separating from the body, clubhead traveling way outside, early wrist hinge, and right shoulder drifting towards the ball.
Loved this style of video. Awesome to see James helping you round and for you to discuss different options and what the benefits are. I also love how much James takes into consideration automatically…. The lie, wind, slope, landing area, how the ball will react…. Vs what I definitely do - what is it to the flag? And hit that number. Loved the video! Would love to see more like it
Great video guys, love to see Robbo on the channel and the positive vibes he gives to Rick. It’s a real shame James can’t caddie on the day, would def be shaving a few shots of with his advice and positive outlook

Great video Good luck in the qualifiers. Such a value having James on. He is quality and you always bounce off each other. Why do you not have him caddy for you and do a break 75 see how he impacts on your score! He makes you better and I look fwd to each new one you put out but please have James on more 🙏his experience is awesome. Loved this video, not too serious & just feeling out the course with different shots played from the same spot to see which works out better. Such a good insight into course management & playstyle 😁 “Aim small, miss small”…my new mantra 😂
To Mr. Rick Shiels: This is What you've needed for a LONG time. Especially on the "Break 75" videos, you get stuck inside your own head when things start to turn sour, and you're never able to bring yourself out of it while the entire round of golf just spins out of your control. Having a decent caddy (I'm not referring to your friend here as decent, he's clearly something of an expert), or even just a friend to play with, is able to point out the things you need to hear and provide that little bit of observation that brings an improved consistency to your golf game. Actually, that gives me a weird idea: If you have a friend who would like to get into golfing, but is afraid of embarrassing himself, maybe have a series where you actively coach him, and see how that affects your level of play. Or maybe that's just a stupid idea.
I give Rick lots of stick about his golf game, but the guy is out there suffering sometimes and he still puts it on TH-cam for all to see, I really hope he qualifies, good luck mate, I'm sure we're all behind you in your quest to qualify for the open.
It was so interesting to get a tour pro’s insight into how to setup and play the shot. As James said ‘aim small, miss small’. It’s the little things that we sometimes overthink which causes doubt in our abilities. You gots this Rick. Open 2024 all the way!!!
Can’t begin to explain my frustration throughout this video🤣 We’ve all watched Rick have two outstanding lessons from Dan Grieve working on the chipping aspect of his game and trying to work on his confidence for that area and yet here we are a week out from Open qualifying with Rick still wanting to putt and having an on course lesson from James about his chipping? If the want to chip and be handier around the greens isn’t there then I’m struggling to understand the point of the two videos with Dan, who again, is absolutely superb
He gets too caught up in his own thoughts, when he was being told about certain shots I don’t think he was fully taking in what was being said and then done what he normally does
I was thinking the same, but I feel overall the focus was more on course shot selection than on swing technique - I didn’t see much that massively undermines the technique and approach from Dan, just some subtle hands and face manipulation on setup (though I saw enough for it to be on my radar and to relate to your comment!). Also have to remember this video is a cut, and I suspect James is mindful enough, to not be trying to introduce significant changes a week out. If anything the lesson learned to walk up and have a look, and stick to routine is a great takeaway, for Rick and the rest of us.
Really cool to see James on the channel again. What a treat to have a former professional and current golf coach as your caddy. Plus he's such a good guy

Videos with James are always class,. Good luck next week lads! ⛳
I give Rick lots of stick about his golf game, but the guy is out there suffering sometimes and he still puts it on TH-cam for all to see, I really hope he qualifies, good luck mate, I'm sure we're all behind you in your quest to qualify for the open.
Kudos to James on the bag. Well done to you both. Good luck, Rick.
Great Video! Good Luck Rick. Once all the tour pros watch this video James is going to get some calls to join the PGA tour as a caddy.
It was so interesting to get a tour pro’s insight into how to setup and play the shot. As James said ‘aim small, miss small’. It’s the little things that we sometimes overthink which causes doubt in our abilities. You gots this Rick. Open 2024 all the way!!!
Very interesting video and insight into course management 👍
Good luck next week
Can’t begin to explain my frustration throughout this video🤣 We’ve all watched Rick have two outstanding lessons from Dan Grieve working on the chipping aspect of his game and trying to work on his confidence for that area and yet here we are a week out from Open qualifying with Rick still wanting to putt and having an on course lesson from James about his chipping? If the want to chip and be handier around the greens isn’t there then I’m struggling to understand the point of the two videos with Dan, who again, is absolutely superb
Imagine the difference if his mindset on the chip was "here is an opportunity to show off my new skill".
I had the same thoughts. Did Rick learn anything from Dan at all?!
He gets too caught up in his own thoughts, when he was being told about certain shots I don’t think he was fully taking in what was being said and then done what he normally does
@@joshgoesflying2828my thoughts too. Don’t think he understands what Dan is trying to teach him.
