Richard…. You are such a GOOD MAN to share your passion…. Your Pure Passion you have for the organ. I was so moved by this video and realized how you are doing so much to spread the world of organs and organ music to all. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this… and indeed ALL of your videos you have shared.
Beautiful instrument! I have a 4-manual Hauptwerk which is driving me crazy. They didn't tell me when I bought it that I needed to have a doctorate degree in computer science! If you don't have one, don't get one of these things. Most of the organ doesn't work or work properly. All I can say is, God bless whoever takes this thing once I have passed on! Cheers!
It would be lovely to see Olivier Latry perform on the organ. Some other suggestions: Fraser Gartshore, Jonathan Scott (from Scott Brothers Duo), Diane Bish, Maria Magdelana Kacsor. The sound from the organ is AMAZING.
Richard, I have a four manual that I'm working on currently. I really am interested in seeing a complete specifications video of the the whole system manufacturers of speakers, what type of PC, audio mixers etc. Thank you!!
Thanks Richard! Very informative and fun. As a minor Patreon, I feel so proud and humbled to be a part of the whole BiS project. I'd love to see Paul Fey and/or Gert van Hoef on the new console, but they are both pretty busy these days.
You ask who we'd like to see play the organ, well Richard, you of course. Like I have said, you are a fantastic organist, and there are many AGO chapters that would enjoy having you presented in recital on some of their notable instruments. As to some of the others? You mentioned Olivier Latry. Absolutely. Also, due to the situation currently at Notre Dame Cathedral, he might not be quite as busy -- glad the Cavaille-Coll was saved. Another would be Daniel Roth, one of his improvisations would sound great on it. Jonathan Scott, absolutely. What a talent. Your Hauptwerk looks grand and beautiful, and sounds wonderful with beautiful colors. What a thrill it must be to own such a magnificent "practice organ." Thanks for sharing; for sharing your talent, insights, and love of the organ and it's literature.
Lord Richard, Latry is as epic as one can get - David Briggs - Daniel Roth - Nathan Laube - Maybe Cameron Carpenter to ham things up a bit - Wayne Marshall - Vincent Dubois - Kalevi Kiviniemi - Petur Sakari - Would you like me to continue? XD
EPIC. I'm kinda lost for words - what a thrilling overview of the new console, a stunning performance of Litanies, and **the Girls** 😻😻 It is just incredible how far Beauty in Sound has come and I am on the edge-of-my-seat with excitement about the continued adventures! Bravo!!!
A lovely instrument Richard. Thank you for sharing. My six manual multiple Hauptwerk instrument organ was built by myself on the smell of an oily rag (from an Estey Grand Reed Organ). Nowhere near the realism of your home instrument, and the attention to detail seen in yours. Love it! Love your playing, enthusiasm and humour. Well done!
Brilliant production Richard, what a presentation … made my day especially the clip where Bobby (?) does that fantastic turn when the dirty word PRICE/COSTis raised. More like this and 2022 will see BiS grow and grow as all your hopes and dreams are starting to be realized. Do you remember way, way back when you asked your early followers “any deals how I can get a 4th manual on this console? Well just look where you are now. It can only blossom and blossom from herein in. Your community salutes you. Your community loves you. Your community stands in awe of your gifts, and all that you give to us. We must now give to you. God bless. Trevor
Thanks Trevor - you’ve been us on the whole journey so far, and it’s been a lot of fun! Make sure you tune in to tonight’s broadcast for Patrons and Members only! X
We have a lot to thanks the electronic industry for in producing these instruments. I'm 83 and when I first started to play the organ there was only the local church and practice time was at a premium. the the Allen computer organ was just coming on stream way back then and it cost an arm and a leg to buy one. One has to marvel at how a would be beginner organist managed before the advent of electronic organs and even organs that were powered by electric blowers !! The organ as an instrument is surely becoming main stream rather than the inaccessible instrument that is was years ago.
Nice! I hope you get more patrons through Patreon through this informational and entertaining introduction to your new organ. Come on, people, get on board if you haven't already. Just wait and see how proud you'll be over every new accomplishment of Beauty in Sound.
I hope so too, the BIS Community is still very much part of the mission statement at BIS with lots of informalities like VC and Patrons/Members-only broadcasts. Which is what we'll be doing tonight, by the way 😊
The clip of OL playing while the bench dropped was at Clermont-Ferrand, I was in the audience that night and I have to say, I didn't notice, the playing was so good!
You GO, Richard. I was gonna respond to the unkind Facebook post, but I see it's been removed. It's too bad that some people think you need to grovel, in thanks, after you've already thanked your donors numerous times. I guess, when some people attend concerts, they complain if the musicians don't continually thank the audience for paying for their equipment. I wish I was in a position to help. All I can do is offer my non-tangible support. I wish you and your family a wonderful and safe 2022! 💌💌💌

The Scott Brothers might be more local and more accessible (thanks to the pandemic), but I'd also love to see you and Fraser Gartshore collaborate on this organ, to see what you could come up with. Maybe you two play each other's compositions???
What a fantastic new organ. So enjoyed the tour of the organ. Looking forward to hearing lots more recitals and Virtual Churches from this organ. What an amazing new organ! Truly! You've just pushed the TH-cam pedal to the max to provide us with even better content. And I also sense quite a new jump-cutting editing style of videos coming from you - refreshing and fast-paced but also has to take a lot more work to finish in post. I look forward to seeing Olivier Latry coming to your home! That would be something truly wonderful amongst all the other great recitals coming up! Congratulations!!!!
Fortunately the quality of the music played on an organ is not a 100% bound to the abilities of the organ console. So your YT channel and your renditions must not hide behind the music we have heard and will hear on Richards new console, Philip. I will visit both channels (and also some others) to enjoy good played organ music on interesting - both Hauptwerk and real pipe - organs. Continue your good work on both channels.
Definitely one of the best Hauptwerk consoles I have seen. The St. Sulpice replica console also looks incredible and somewhere else I saw another console replica of a cathedral organ. In terms of audio, which may be subjective, there are many instruments using large numbers of channels and/or high end audio, many in large spaces, so it is hard to say what the "best" Hauptwerk organ is. Without a doubt though this instrument is incredible and will bring a lot of positive attention to what is possible with Hauptwerk. Well done!
Thanks John. I can say with all certainty that Renatus Ltd have created 'one' of the best Hauptwerk organs and it was far surpassed my own expectations. Hopefully my viewers may realise that a lot of what I say is tongue-in-cheek, but this organ isn't made to just 'look' like a good organ - it's using all of the best in the business parts (solenoids & stop heads, keyboards, swell pedals, wood, music desk etc). The organ is equally impressive under the skin as it is at face value. I'd love to see more of the Saint-Sulpice replica, and maybe its owner will invite me over one day to play it.
Casting my vote for details on the room sound system, also would love to see more about the innards of your console and how you/Renatus integrated it with Hauptwerk
Really entertaining. I hope you get the after-sales service you need for the little problems. I know how to repair pipe organs, but not MIDI, digital or electronic ones. I keep a close watch and I look forward to your organists' workshops and master classes. You do a great job through video editing / production and TH-cam! Bravo!
I love this new Organ. It's one part space shuttle (so many stops!) and one part cathedral worthy wood grain. I love that you basically have a very realistic cathedral-like sound in your own home. Any chance you know anyone who can help Sam from Look Mom No Computer get his new museum organ working and intonated in its new home at his new museum? It was rescued from someone who is selling a house in England that had a pipe organ (the actual pneumatic classic kind) installed in their house which he has carefully disassembled and carried back to his museum and is setting back up.
Really enjoyed that Richard, I think you better keep a close eye on Nala!! - On the other hand id like to see a tour of the speakers for the beast! :-)
So very cool to have this in your house! I'm on team touchscreen because to me the only other alternative was the number of stops you have, which simply wouldn't fit in my room! Best of luck, and looking forward to seeing the world's finest organists chez toi!
And if I may, another suggestion of a guest organist would be Colin Davey, organist at Wimborne Minster. I sang with him 40 years ago in a small parish church choir.
Great overview and great editing. I just renovated and midified an old 30 note, analogue pedalboard and combined it with a couple of keyboards, but this level of build is definitely on my bucket list to get one day… maybe after I get a bigger house too 😁🎹🎹🎹🎹. Keep up the great work. 👍
Do you know, you just reminded me that I forgot to mention the computer in the draw under the keyboards!! But that’s where it is - it is actually a touch screen served as a way to access the Hauptwerk menus etc without having to use a mouse. But I always have my wireless mouse to hand!
Would love more information about the loudspeakers and their config, always wonder what i could tweak in my Hauptwerk setup. Also please invite the amazing Gert van Hoef over for a Play !
Yes the more information regarding the Loudspeaker ans amplifier set up would be very good - It would be nice to know how you have split the organ over the outputs as well
Those snags must surely have been sorted before delivery! I appreciate it needed to be delivered at speed, but I hope the builder will be sorting those things soon.
In fairness, I think the organ builders would have liked a little more time before delivery! There is a lot of new innovation in the console which added considerable complexity to the assembly. Richard was very keen for a December delivery. They will be sorted imminently 😊
Yes - I needed the organ to arrive quickly for Christmas BIS content, so I don’t mind there being some snags. I have no doubt in my mind that they’ll be put right in due course - Renatus are simply the best.
Brilliant video, thank you so much! My votes for guest performers would be: Christopher Herrick, Gillian Weir (she might say yes to providing a masterclass on it for students!?), Anna Lapwood, Kevin Bowyer, and David Briggs.
Amazing. I was laughing at some of the humourous parts of the tour. The favorite part of the tour was at 4:37. I know that in the USA the left stopjamb is in the reverse order on a lot of American organs but the right stopjamb it is in the "Correct Order." Also I like how Sortie in Eflat is in "what goes up must come down".
considering that they drive on the left side of the road, obviously -- for them -- it is the "correct" order, whereas since we Americans drive on the *right* side of the road, for us, ours is the "correct" order - ;-)
@@aBachwardsfellow I just think it's weird to have the pedal in the middle, and the swell and great at extremities; I find I usually are manipulating those more than the others, and whatever I have to mess with the most is what I want closest to the keyboards.
@@ServiamScores oh I agree completely! :D What I said was more tongue-in-cheek -- just poking a bit of fun at those Brits who still haven't figured out the "correct" way to drive on a road ...
Would love to see/hear Prof. Ian Tracey playing this. Guilmant's 8th Sonata would be a treat! Shame you didn't feel able to share at least a rough cost! I reckon somewhere around 40k, but I could be way out. The UHT keyboards are somewhere between 3 and 4k each if memory serves, depending on the options chosen..
Re the cost! I reckon u are not far out. Wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't more! Renatus built the console and they are not cheap. Did they supply the keyboards not sure ? Richard also mentioned the drawstops solenoids were supplied by A Taylor so they would of cost a fair amount as well. In addition to the sound audio and computer interface.
Brilliant!! Please do tell us about the audio system - amplifiers, speaker types and brands, wattage, channels, physical location in the room, etc. Thank you! Oh and P.S. Love that last chord. And love the sox - I have a pair just like those. :~)
Yes please show the speaker set up and audio interface!! Re: Hauptwerk: Can the swell keyboard be directed an isolated audio out put? Stay with me here…can I build a swell box for speakers with a swell shade? Or is hauptwerk “stereo” ?
What an entertaining video with a lot of interesting information about the new console. If time is scarce you have to face compromises even on the last meter of the race for quality. But I strongly believe everything will come to a good end when there is time for that. Keep in mind that this console is completely custom made and contains some first time technology.
Excellent video. Would definitely like to hear the audio through the speakers in the room - I imagine most of what you 'broadcast' is direct from the system?
Here is another idea for you to consider: Invite young students (of whatever your British Guild of Organists might be) to come an learn about your organ and compare the various organs you have acquired. What an incredible opportunity for them to hear and play some of the world's finest instruments in one location! PLEASE DO CONSIDER THIS SERIOUSLY!
Console looks good Richard, still waiting on getting the electronics for mine to convert it to solid state. Guess the Allen will continue to serve for the time being before the old Moller gets put into action. TBH for how much you probably paid, I hope you got the builders to come and fix those technical problems as I think they deserve to be looked at. I have a similar idea to the whole invite the community onto the organ, but my vision is a bit grander and involves actually building pipes to have the old girl sing again, which probably wont happen for many years if it happens at all. Overall, the console is a hit I believe and as long as you are happy with it then it's a win. The American layout is still the best and you can't change my mind.
I wish you many years enjoying your new console, and what it will allow you to do. The only Hauptwerk console cost that concerns me is the one I plan to have made. Unless someone is contributing direct financial funding for my console, they don't have any business knowing the cost. IMO. :) At present, I have a makeshift "portable" 4-manual console with 25-note pedals, cobbled together from various and sundry items; it works and allows me to explore and learn Hauptwerk however, it is far from ideal.
Awesome overview! Thanks Richard! The only thought I had is that, with the expansive capabilities of Hauptwerk,. some instruments might benefit from having at least one more expression pedal. With the increaasing presence of "the girls" you may need to retrieve that roll of tape and keep it handy ... ;-)
Fabulous overview. Thanks. Is there any chance of a video detailing the sequencer operation? Obviously I get the basic concept of +/- to cycle through the combinations but for those of us not blessed with the big cathedral instruments they are always a bit of a mystery. Are your sequencer 0-9 (why 0?) independent of the generals 1-10? For what purposes would you use either or both? How many channels do you have? Do you have some sort of USB output to save your settings for certain pieces? Is it easy to insert an intermediate step in the sequence or do you need to allow for any changes by leaving blank/duplicate combinations?
The Seq buttons are entirely independent of the Generals. The advance buttons only work on the sequencer in Hauptwerk, which is a shame. My interface as 16 channels, and I’m using 14 of them for everything in total.
This is a Organist's dream ! However one must be realistic and practical. As a large instrument is fairly expensive as well as accomdating it preferably in a room that is soundproof. I think what would also be good is to perhaps have a play on hands sessions for Organist's interested in seeing and hearing what it feels like overall. He or she could make a small donation towards the funding of your channel Richard. I like the idea of guest organists but two of the greatest organists I know are sadly in a care home and no longer able to play. Nathan Laube is probably one of the finest younger concert Organists on the scene now. He opened the refurbished Organs at Kings College Cambridge & Canterbury Cathedral . Be great to give him a phone call or e mail in the future.
Seconded! IMHO Nathan Laude is the most complete, musical concert organist before the public today...and a thoroughly nice fellow. His repertoire is very large with many superb off-the-beaten track major works in addition to the more usual fayre. I think he is currently based in Stuttgart and has a position at the Royal Conservatoire in Birmingham...so England is not unknown to him.
Hilarious, a swift action on the part of the cat to automaticaly extinguish your excessive excitement of this precious gem, plus my neighbour's experience tells me cats like pissin on furniture.
As for potential future guest BiS organists, there is also of course our friends James Flores, and Titus Grenyer, in Australia. But they are rather inconveniently located on the other side of the world. Do we maybe have the BiS technology for them to play from their home consoles, on the new BiS console? Sort of? Just a thought.
In no particular order....John Scott Whiteley, Colin Walsh, David Briggs, Daniel Lancelot, Naji Hakim, Daniel Roth, Olivier Latry and Cameron Carpenter. There are so many very talented organists that deserve a chance to play this wonderful instrument. However, the ones I've listed are just a few of my favorites.
Hello. Greetings from EWTN in Bham Alabama. I have a meeting this coming Monday with META organs of Canada to begin to do this very same thing to an equally massive older electronic organ… convert our 4-manual Viscount console to a Hauptwerk instrument of 85 ranks with new real drawknobs and reverse color keys. Stay tuned to our many media channels to watch the progress.
Great video, thanks! Apologies if this suggestion has been made before....but would you consider putting the name of the sample set you are using on screen? Maybe next to the little clock?
Wonderful... I just cheat and have a 61-key Yamaha keyboard that I stack another Yamaha 49-key keyboard on top of to have two manuals. A little monkeying with instrument selection and it works for Harpsichord, and 2-manual playing. I still want another 88-key weighted action digital keyboard. When we downsized15 -years ago, my parents' Hammond 2-manual and pedal-rank organ and the baby grand were donated to the Westminster Choir College.
Richard - did you consider commissioning Renatus to develop a new kind of stop head with a small, transparent LED display embedded in it? That way you could forgo the detachable stop heads and have hauptwerk dynamically update the stops with the relevant name and pitch. I think that would be cool, albeit super-expensive! Of course these would all have to draw power and also have a comms connection. An interesting technological challenge!
Thought about that - but it wasn’t authentic enough. I didn’t want to be able to see anything on the console anywhere that wasn’t ‘real’ if you know what I mean. The organ console looks and works entirely like a real H&H organ. The only screens I have are the small LCD screens on the left, and a touchscreen monitor in a draw which controls Hauptwerk. Going for physical stops like this was very much a conscious decision.
You should stay with an Allen organ as they make the finest in the world. They have the finest space age technology, materials and build quality available anywhere, hands down Amen period!
You could possibly ask Renatus as a possible ‘play-in’ period about either shaving a bit off the piston key-slips, or, re-fitting with a heavier gauge thumper rail, or fitting (very slightly) thicker front rail key felts to absorb an enthusiastic organist/pianist……sorry! I’ll go off now and wash my mouth out with carbolic soap! Just out of curiosity, what’s the longevity of interchangeable drawstop knobs as I had a really fine digital organ supplied to a church I played in and one, maybe two had to be exchanged due to faulty magnets.
Let's hear it for the Choir Trompet for standing proud throughout the video!

P.S. where is the computer kept and do you have to screen, mouse, keyboard once it’s setup?
Do you know, you just reminded me that I forgot to mention the computer in the draw under the keyboards!! But that’s where it is - it is actually a touch screen served as a way to access the Hauptwerk menus etc without having to use a mouse. But I always have my wireless mouse to hand!
@@beautyinsound awesome! Touch screen sounds like a great idea. 👍 Thanks for sharing your talent and hard work with us all.
Beautiful organ AND facetious cats !!!! 😄
Would love more information about the loudspeakers and their config, always wonder what i could tweak in my Hauptwerk setup. Also please invite the amazing Gert van Hoef over for a Play !
Yes the more information regarding the Loudspeaker ans amplifier set up would be very good - It would be nice to know how you have split the organ over the outputs as well
Now that is the ultimate home organ!!! I love it!
I burst out laughing when he said that.
considering that they drive on the left side of the road, obviously -- for them -- it is the "correct" order, whereas since we Americans drive on the *right* side of the road, for us, ours is the "correct" order - ;-)
Gert van Hoef would be a wonderful addition to your list. I also agree with you on Olivier Latry!
And I would so love to hear Olivier Latry as well!!!!!
Speaker set up? Yes please.
Brilliant!! Please do tell us about the audio system - amplifiers, speaker types and brands, wattage, channels, physical location in the room, etc. Thank you! Oh and P.S. Love that last chord. And love the sox - I have a pair just like those. :~)
Great tour of the organ, really enjoyed it! Great video and a wonderful organ!
What a well put together video (and organ)! And the shot on the US was well taken by the way 😂
Yes please show the speaker set up and audio interface!!
Wow! Impressive stuff. Fabulous console you’ve built there, and the St Ouen set is clearly thrillingly good!! Good to get this insight into it
Cheers Colin!
I love so many of the things you play...... but, you also need a huge house for this console and a certain distance from neighbors!
I would absolute love to see Mr. Fraser Gartshore sitting at that console!
Richard, I would love to see Gert van Hoef playing your organ 👍
I once played a real pipe organ (at Odiham, Hants.) where a stop head came off in my hand! They've since had a brand new organ.
Richard's getting into "mememy" style content now lol had a good laugh XD. Keep this style pls
"Now, you might be asking why do I need such an extravagant organ?" Well, no, I'm not, because I'm thinking it seems perfectly reasonably to me! 😄
🤣 I do love it to be fair, as does everyone who’s played it 👍🏻
I wish you many years enjoying your new console, and what it will allow you to do.
The only Hauptwerk console cost that concerns me is the one I plan to have made. Unless someone is contributing direct financial funding for my console, they don't have any business knowing the cost. IMO. :)
At present, I have a makeshift "portable" 4-manual console with 25-note pedals, cobbled together from various and sundry items; it works and allows me to explore and learn Hauptwerk however, it is far from ideal.
Honestly I think this is the best video you have made. Genuinely laughing out loud!
Very entertaining guide to your organ.😊
I tend to set up pieces when I’m about to play them rather than saving them for later use. I like to vary my registrations from time to time as well.
Yes. I also vote for Nathan Laube.
I also vote for Nathan Laube
Hilarious, a swift action on the part of the cat to automaticaly extinguish your excessive excitement of this precious gem, plus my neighbour's experience tells me cats like pissin on furniture.
The editing was fantastic! Hahahaha
Great video. xD
As for potential future guest BiS organists, there is also of course our friends
James Flores, and Titus Grenyer, in Australia.
But they are rather inconveniently located on the other side of the world.
Do we maybe have the BiS technology for them to play from their home consoles,
on the new BiS console? Sort of? Just a thought.
Thanks for showing this wonderful setup. Do you have any advice how to reduce pedal noise for neighbors of the instrument at all?
Certainly an interesting video...
Some great choices there. Some of those names may already be appearing on BIS in 2022 😉
@@beautyinsound Wow!!!
I am very curious of the audio layout and channeling.
Thank you for the video. That is a beautiful instrument!
This is hilarious. I love the editing!
Stephen Tharp, NY, would be marvelous!
Definitely want to know about the speakers, makes, models, where you have them placed, how connected and can you run Hauptwerk on an Apple laptop?
It would be fun to have Fraser Gartshore come over and play your organ and vice versa!
I am
Coming to England in June for an organ tour. It would be a dream to come play this organ also!!
I definitely want to see the speakers. What if I want one for my house in California?
Anything is possible!
Thanks for the overview..
William Fox for the next recital maybe? 😉
Well, I was William’s first organ teacher after all…. 😎
@@beautyinsound wow.. really? What a good enough reason for him then lol
Omg this is amazing
You should stay with an Allen organ as they make the finest in the world. They have the finest space age technology, materials and build quality available anywhere, hands down Amen period!
I’d love to see and hear David Dunnett, Norwich Cathedral, play your Hauptwerk. He is outstanding.
Keep the memes coming Richard
Oh yes!
Do Bobby and Nala like their new scratching panel - a gift from Santa Claws, no doubt
Don’t tempt them!! 😸
Renatus are being fantastic, and I have no doubt that all issues will be resolved in due course. They’re very dedicated to their work!
Olivier Larry playing his world renown Widor’s Toccata from the 5th Symphony ON NANCY!!!!
Could you and would you get the builder to fix some of the problems? Or is it not worth the time?
They’ll be fixed in due course. They’re actually very small niggles in relation to the size of the instrument and all the components which make it up.
