Too bad it was not built to slay wolfs with freedom sun warrior god of liberation powers. Seriously, get a look at Sonic's whole philosophy as well as the Werehog's stretchy powers. Then look at Luffy's character and the true potential of his Devil Fruit.
I always assumed the "Shadow Fever" setting on the Egg Dealer was meant to power up the Shadow Androids and Eggman didnt foresee having to use it against Shadow himself.
It also might have just been an attraction for his Casino that he had to HASTILY reconfigure into a weapon: usually, Eggman is the instigator, and the conflict starts only when he wants it to. But this time, it's someone ELSE who kicks off the game, and he's not ready. He's still trying to rebuild after the events of Heroes, and he hasn't had time to finish R&D for his next generation of weapons
I love the Egg Dragoon for both representing Eggman's strengths and flaws. The Egg Dragoon is his magnum opus, his greatest creation that surpasses even Metal Sonic in scope. A machine built specifically to kill Sonic, all while still being an *unfinished machine* in Unleashed. Eggman took so much into account, every minute detail he could muster regarding his greatest foe. However, he forgot to account for the *one* contingent *he himself created* out of desperation. Makes the fact we go up against the *finished* version of the mech in Generations and completely demolishing it all that much sweeter of a reward, and a good bit of continuity consistency for those that were paying attention.
The original cutscene shows the initial idea of the Egg Dragoon. The werehog boss shows the upgrade of the prototype. In generations Eggman improved this design further with the MK1 design, -and forces just didn't do shit because it's forces-
@@greenD7244 That's actually quite good tbh Coincidentally I was watching a friend play Sonic Omens recently just for the funsies, and the Egg Dragoon is the first boss fight of that game We talked about how that boss was so hard in the pre-patch of the game, and that we knew it was supposed to be "Eggman's ultimate weapon" in Unleashed so it made sense for the story for him to be that hard, to keep what Unleashed stablished, and to continue of where Unleashed left of, but we complained that they also needed to be a bit more fair in terms of gameplay, it was the first boss of the game, it couldn't be that hard (maybe the excuse could've been that the Egg Dragoon is broken and not being piloted by anyone, so it's weaker) and thankfully the boss fight was made a bit easier in later versions, as much as the game still is kinda meh for me personally Now remembering that there's a reason in Forces to not make the Dragoon as strong as he was in Unleashed is nice, it doesn't take away the greatness the boss was in Unleashed and the improvements made in the mech in Generations with the lasters and detachable body, making sense in the story, while also keeping it fair for gameplay since in Forces it is a mid-game boss fight
I also like the fact that when using the egg dragoon, this is where Eggman is in his most desperate state. He just built his whole city and Sonic just tears it down like nothing. Not only does Eggman come in to turn everything on its head, he fights this flipping blue rat on the way down to the EARTH'S CORE. If there was no evidence that he believes that this machine will grant him the victory to finally rid of sonic, you've got it now. The machine wasnt even FINISHED, and he still wanted to kill this mofo. He even brought back a finalised version of this thing in generations, this guy has no flipping chill😭🙏
The Egg Dragoon also gets one of the most harrowing boss fight themes too. I mean what kind of theme can perfectly capture a Mad Scientist in his magnum opus of a mech (which took inspiration from three of Dark Gaia's most powerful enforcers) fighting against his arch foe on an elevator that is rapidly descending towards the EARTH'S CORE!
When i was researching the various Egg mechs to stat them out in my RPG, I realized that Unleashed is where we definitively see Eggman's genius reflected in the boss design. We see him iterating on his creations in real time. Egg Beetle and Egg Devil Ray are salvaged for their best parts after Sonic destroys them and combined into Egg Lancer. Egg Dragoon, meanwhile iterates on the Dark Gaia bosses with their elemental attacks, which are missing in the intro cinematic. Unleashed had such great and dynamic mechs that I included two of them in my game. Egg Dragoon is so dynamic that included two example scenarios for the GM to use when running it with their players!
Absolutelly agree with you, and for me that's peak Eggman, i love how threatning he is on SA 2 but seeing the Doctor creating a mech that forces Sonic to go super and adapting to Sonic as the story progresses with his invention is a good character development for Eggman. Also what kind of RPG system are you using/basing it on for your's? I have been searching for any to do a Sonic RPG campaign but couldnt find any close to what i wanted to do.
4:18 comparing the uses of the Egg Dragoon against Sonic to that of a dragon slayer vs a dragon is INSPIRERED. I can already see parallels to how most characters see him as, a knight (of the wind ;)c) vs how Eggman sees him, the dragon! I love how much thought your videos inspire, keep it up!!
I've said it before, the Egg Dragoon fight feels so much more intense than Eggman's typical boss fights. It genuinely feels like he's trying to straight up _murder_ that hedgehog. And when Sonic is beating into the glass, he sounds genuinely scared, more than usual. It feels so much more like a savage fight to the death than their usual scuffles.
It’s like, Eggman opted to build a mechanical force of nature to fight the force of nature, like Sonic vs Metal Sonic but with more Eggman. Scratch that, the Egg Dragoon is the ultimate distillation of the entire reality-threatening war between the Eggman and Sonic the Hedgehog. It’s Absolute Eggman.
These in depth videos are so well edited and thought out. That Egg Dragoon cutaway made me ascend. It has to be one of the coolest boss fights in Sonic history.
I would also throw in there that the Egg Dragoon fight is made to counter normal Sonic. It’s in a cramped space, the attacks tend to linger, and it’s covered in spikes and is tough enough it would be difficult for normal sonic to fight. But we don’t fight it as normal sonic, we fight it as the Werehog.
The Egg Dragoon takes a lot of design cues from the Egg Viper from SA1, so you could say there’s a link between both games. As for me, I think the Big Arm is my favorite. You fight this boss in a limited space where Sonic has little room to run and the hit box requires precise jumping and usage of the insta-shield. There’s also the storm clouds and music which represents the vengeful drive of Robotnik.
Your editing continues to blow me away, along with your fresh perspectives. Never would've thought to compare the efficacy of Eggman's mechs, but now that I've watched this I find my designer brain going "just what exactly are the important components for fighting hedgehogs?" XD
“The Dragoon is not a dragon, it’s the thing built to slay one” Sega has another game series, Yakuza, and in that series the most powerful creature in lore, is a dragon. The symbolism is awesome
been waiting for a video like this for awhile the Egg Dragoon is the pinnacle of Eggman's malevolence and rivalry with Sonic, if Sonic didn't exist the Egg Dragoon wouldn't this mechanical marvel IS Sonic The Hedgehog as just like Sonic and Eggman while the characters themselves can be moved and beaten, what they stand for, who they are and their raw ideals, is unflinching, immovable and downright unstoppable, and the Egg Dragoon represents that as a culmination of what the series has built up to, the final clash between two unstoppable forces, all hail the Eggman Empire
What's interesting is that Eggman actually kept iterating upon the Dragoon design past Unleashed. The Dragoon seen in Sonic Generations is different from the one seen in Unleashed. It has multiple cockpits, it can split into two mechs that both function independently of each other, the wings are slightly tweaked up, the tail is brand new, etc. Then, when the mech returns in Forces of all things it also has a slightly upgraded design, brandishing differently colored spikes and having its wings in red. Gotta give credit to the guy, he's dead set on refining the mech until it eventualy does defeat Sonic.
I still haven't seen your "Soul of Sonic Stories" video yet, but I need to after this. Snappy editing, engaging voiceover, all-around solid points made. INSTANT sub.
Eggman's Greatest Mech is always gonna be Egg Dragoon, because it's just a sign of Eggman's ingenuity and his desperation to its fullest. The destruction of Eggmanland, at this specific point, drove him up a wall and the Egg Dragoon managed to pull that anger towards him!
GREAT editing like usual! I’ve always loved how that robot he used in the beginning of unleashed was a prototype of the egg dragoon. Cool to see someone else point it out!
Every time you reference Sonic Unleashed in a video a year is added to my lifespan, keep doing it never stop. Also the editing for this video was phenomenal
The Egg Dragon is the steed, Eggman is the Knight, and the Werehog is the monster A classic video game story in reverse, where the villain instead of the hero is improved by powers copied from the great evils unleashed on the land And the hero? At his most monstrous Hehehe
you are now my favourite youtuber. i found you today. your editing, how you interpret the franchise as a whole, the things you say about it. you remind me- or show me, why this franchise is so endearing to me. why i fell in love with it so quickly.
favorite part about the egg dragoons design must be the forcefield around the cockpit during the first phase and powerd by those white/blue generator/battery-stubs between the phases. i cannot think of any other mech in eggmans aresenal that has an active barrier around the egg-mobile. i like to imagine he uses an energy barrier as opposed to an armored cap like let's say the egg emperor or DER because energy based shields could probably regenerate themselves more, while keeping clear vision from the drivers seat. i also love how some things never changes when the big glowing circle on the belly cant take too many hits or the controls shut down, which is most likely didn't stress test in anticipation of a werehog battle, either because he underestimated sonic in that state, secretly didn't want to beat sonic unless he too was at his peak and threw the fight, or simply didn't have time to properly test the mech in anticipation, because hedgehog fast.
Yeah, thinking about it, whatever that mech from the Unleashed intro is, it was probably the prototype for the Ultra-Hyper variant. His plan was solid, it just came up against the opposite of its target.
Every time I watch these videos I feel both enlightened and stupid as a sonic fan. HOLY SHIT HOW DID I NOT REALIZE HE WAS USING HIS BEST MECH THIS WHOLE TIME!!!
I know the nature of the video is much more different but a fun piece of trivia, it is pretty much set in stone to some extent that Eggman's greatest mech ever is the Egg Saucer from Sonic Advance 2. According to the Prima Strategy Guide for Sonic Advance 2 it's the most expensive weapon Eggman has ever created and it is to this day the only thing we've seen (at least from mechs) that can one-hit kapoof Sonic regardless of rings. Both his laser attack and his slap are instant game overs.
Some mechs from Rush have instakill attacks, the snakes' super slam if it hits directly does I believe. I think the two arm slam from the not-extra final boss, if you're beneath it it's a oneshot. Also the rolling to either crush him or knock him off the platform I can't quite remember, from the forest snake boss, is an instakill from recollection. The eagle mech from altitude limit can blow him off the platform, but since that's not a direct contact oneshot it doesn't count the same way but figured I'd bring it up for posterity.
@therighttrousers343 I didn't want to mention any crashing cause Sonic was never protected from that anyway, even as Super. And the reason why I brought up the guide is because it makes the Egg Saucer a tad bit more unique in that regard.

Thanks for reminding me I need an Xbox to play this DAMN game (the HD version, not the Wii one)! I will say, I've always liked the Egg Dragoon aesthetically, but I know that the HD version of the fight has a lot of back and forth between Sonic and Eggman that adds so much. I'm glad you gave it that spotlight.
I feel like I'm someone who is very educated on Sonic and what makes the series, the characters, and the brand tick. But even still, it amazes me that someone can look so much more deep into things like this. The final line speaks perfectly encapsulates the ambition of Unleashed story. Geez AL, what you've discovered here is incredible.
I saw the title and my mind immediately went to the egg dragoon. That boss fight, that theme (that damn theme, holy shit), and the cutscene before it, is all absolute peak and is my absolute favorite throughout ALL of the franchise. It's hard for me to explain but so much of it just makes it feel like that fight between Sonic and Eggman could be the last one ever. Man, SONIC UNLEASHED RAHHHHHHHHHHHH
I love intricate, in-depth looking at even the smallest Sonic stuff. There's so much to see and think about, that when they put in the time and effort, we as the fans go nuts about how smart Eggman was in a cutscene, and how he and Sonic still mirror each other. I just hope we can start getting more proof of how intelligent the both of them are. Sonic constantly a step ahead, but Eggman always learning and growing from his failures. And at the moment that Eggman surpasses Sonic, he in turn takes his failure, and bounds ahead to new heights that Eggman didn't think that blue rodent could even attain. (Kinda exactly what Al said in the video, but I digress) They're like an ouroboros or yin and yang, eternally circling and fighting each other, never one upping the other for too long. I know it's cliché, but also you can't help but love the battle that they go through. It's almost never tiring, in my opinion.
@@hydrocityshark I don't specifically remember when (as in which issue) he said that, but that sounds exactly what he'd say when lamenting how Eggman and Sonic fight and act
Oh I LOVE gambling and shooting missiles at the innocent! Maybe I can earn some sin points with it I never realized this was the Egg Dragoon. Seeing it in action was super sick, I totally glossed over the fact that Eggman literally GRABBED Sonic with it because he went super afterwards. Also the werehog section of this video was so good,, Sonic literally ADAPTS to everything, so it’s only fair he does it with his new form too. I love how in depth your videos are despite being so short!
Does this man ever miss?! NO. He is the A.L.B.O.I. and he does not frick around when it comes to the GOAT: Eggman- SONIC UNLEASHED!! Seriously though, don't stop cooking with these edits because you are master chef. Like, this video was 4 MINUTES and you gave us quality that we'd see on one with 20! Utterly phenominal. (See I can use big words too!)
I'd say the greatest mech would be the Egg Salamander. Only cause he actually managed to get the chaos emeralds/chaos emerald adjacent power to start tearing up the universe to remake it in his own image which was HAPPENING THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FIGHT AS HE LITERALLY RIPS APART SPACE AND TIME JUST TO KILL ONE HEDGEHOG. The music be killer too.

I will say, I've always liked the Egg Dragoon aesthetically, but I know that the HD version of the fight has a lot of back and forth between Sonic and Eggman that adds so much. I'm glad you gave it that spotlight.
ALTHEBOI IS BACK????? DUUUUUDE, I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS, KEEP POSTING PLEASE.
(I've watched the Sonic 3 one like 1 billion times).
A great analysis too! 4:46
YOU UPLOADED AGAIN!!! LETS GOOOOOO
YOUR EDITING STYLE IS SO FIRE 🔥🔥🔥 you just gained a new sub :)
I NEED more people to talk about the Egg Dragoon it's so fucking cool
HE JUST DOESN'T STOP BRO
I feel like I'm someone who is very educated on Sonic and what makes the series, the characters, and the brand tick. But even still, it amazes me that someone can look so much more deep into things like this. The final line speaks perfectly encapsulates the ambition of Unleashed story. Geez AL, what you've discovered here is incredible.
I'm glad that u make this video, Egg Dragoon always has been my favorite and this video just make this favoritism more stronger.
Am I crazy for saying I think I like this video more than the last
Idk how to explain whatever you did here but more of this, please. I love this
IM SO HAPPY YOU RETURNED AL
I love your videos so much bro, they’re like no other, always so emotional in a way hahhaha j love it
This video is a bite sized piece of brilliance, not sure I can really put into words how the writing, pacing and editing really come together
I get chills every time I watch an AlTheBoi video
And then Classic Sonic beat the Egg Dragoon by chucking rocks at him.
Forces.
@@EnzoZambrotti Rocks that the Egg Dragoon literally gives to you!
seeing a video dump from you is like Christmas fr >:0 !!!
my favorite Eggman fanboy
This entire video in phenomenal. The ending gave me chills down my spine
I'm glad SOMEBODY else finally acknowledged that the Dragoon is actually just the intro mech super upgraded. I felt crazy being the only one to see it
I saw the title and my mind immediately went to the egg dragoon.
(Kinda exactly what Al said in the video, but I digress)
They're like an ouroboros or yin and yang, eternally circling and fighting each other, never one upping the other for too long.
I know it's cliché, but also you can't help but love the battle that they go through. It's almost never tiring, in my opinion.
@@youngsorcerer23 The Sonic Cycle, according to Dr. Starline.
@@hydrocityshark I don't specifically remember when (as in which issue) he said that, but that sounds exactly what he'd say when lamenting how Eggman and Sonic fight and act
I think we got enough milk before he disappears again
Oh I LOVE gambling and shooting missiles at the innocent! Maybe I can earn some sin points with it
I never realized this was the Egg Dragoon.
Yeeeessssss finally someone talking about my favorite bossfight in all of Sonic and why it’s so awesome thank youuuuuu
Never have I ever seen someone glaze the egg dragoon like this😭 this shit was peak tho.
(See I can use big words too!)
glad to see you posting more! i always enjoy your editing
I've never felt this much joy as i clicked on this video
OML YES ANOTHER BANGER LESS GOO
We don't talk about what Forces did to the Egg Dragoon
Eggman: “This time I’ll pin it against Sonic without the Werehog!”
❌
Eggman: “Fine, I’ll pin it against his younger, weaker self.”
❌
I'd say the greatest mech would be the Egg Salamander. Only cause he actually managed to get the chaos emeralds/chaos emerald adjacent power to start tearing up the universe to remake it in his own image which was HAPPENING THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FIGHT AS HE LITERALLY RIPS APART SPACE AND TIME JUST TO KILL ONE HEDGEHOG. The music be killer too.
Ngl, i love how this video ended. It felt like a cliffhanger and a perfect ending all at the same time
Awesome video showing the points super fast and with fun editing. Thesis quickly. Solid stuff
I love the editing that went into this video, kudos to that
Two uploads? Wouldn't this make you Eggman's greatest mech?
man your editing is amazing. that ending gave shivers
Love the 70s commercial for the intro!
The editing is mad good I swear it’s like candy for my eyes
