What’s YOUR favorite running gag on TV? Let us know below, and check out our video of the Top 20 Funniest New Girl Running Gags - th-cam.com/video/9wIMLItKhnY/w-d-xo.html
Oh you gonna need a longer list to cover Sanford and son (you big dummy or how would you like one across your lip) Cheers (NORM!) Family Matters (did I do that) Good times (damn damn damn) Friends (how you doing) Oh there so much more
I loved on Home Improvement the joke of the audience never entirely seeing Wilson’s face and how they found ways around this in various scenarios around the show 😊
The invisible characters were always my favorite. Mrs. Wolowitz from The Big Bang Theory, Stanley Walker in Will & Grace, Al's mom from Home Improvement etc.
a few favorites not mentioned: Wilson's hidden face ( Home Improvement ) "Did I do that?"/"Look what you did..." ( Family Matters ) the Barry White dance in the unisex ( Ally McBeal ) Janice ( Friends ) the broken step ( Modern Family ) savage Lily ( Modern Family ) Cam & Phil don't realize what they just said ( Modern Family ) fake ads ( Working ) DrugCo ( The Drew Carey Show ) the Feeny call ( Boy Meets World )
Tim Taylor Home Improvement: "More power" or "Oh no..." Dinosaurs Baby Sinclar: "Not the Momma! Not the Momma! Not the Momma! Not the Momma!" Earl Sinclar: "You do that one more time and I'll throw you across the room." *pauses* Baby: "NOT THE MOMMA!!!"
What about Robin Sparkles? And why does everyone skate over the fact that two of the best running gags came from the same episode of How I Met Your Mother?
How ridiculous that Arrested Development had classic running gags and not ONE is mentioned. -The Chicken Dances -Tobia's Gay References -NO TOUCHING! -Literal Doctor -Oscar's obvious hints about being Buster's father
There was an episode of Fresh Prince where Uncle Phil was having a nightmare, in it Hillary ended up marrying Jazz, and at the end he goes to toss him, but it's Uncle Phil who ends up getting tossed.
Robert’s chin touching in Everybody Loves Raymond was a surprise. Mind you the show had so many such as: - Frank’s “Holy Crap” - Marie’s “I don’t like that…” - Debra calling Ray “idiot” - Robert’s “Is this about me?”
Well, over the recap "the road so far..." at the end of the seasons. IIRC, this was meant to be a one-off but went over so well they decided to continue it.
0:22: I like this one, but I think, Julius knowing the actual price, even exact change, of everything is a way funnier running gag. That and Mr. Omar’s “Tragic! TRAGIC!”
Friends; we were on a break + ugly naked guy + Ross and his 3 divorces + mr. Heckles Big bang theory; Howard’s mother + Sheldon’s spot + the roommate agreement +penny and alcohol + the elevator How i met your mother; Barney’s job
I like running gags on the monkees. Like when someone or something disappeared and they would say "they're gone!" and when someone did something he shouldn't do they'd say "don't do that"
Honorable mentions: 1. "Go home, Steve" and "I don't have to take this. I'm going home" (Family Matters) 2. The couch (The Simpsons). I don't know if it counts since it's used in the opening of the show.
To be honest I thought the Sheldon knock would be in the top 3, IF there are any other funny gags in comedy shows will definitely hope for an eventual part 2 please 🤞?
How about Wilson Wilson (yes, that's the actual character's name), the Taylor's neighbor on Home Improvement? His face was never completely seen, not even when the episode centered on his character.
One of my favourite things with this on the finale when the cast basically did a 'curtain call' he walked out with a piece of fence hiding his face, then removed it 🙂
Sometimes I wonder why he didn't get more work after Home Improvement, I mean his face was visible in movie and TV show appearances before HI, including one of my favorite comediep, Three Men and a Baby. He was one of the drug dealers who wanted to put Mary in the trunk of the car.
Honestly, I don't know if catch phrases should be considered the same as running gags. Anyways, I feel like you missed some of my favorites: Fomzie's fist causing something to happen , usually but not always the jukebox to turn on. Jack benny being cheap Fred Sanford going through eyeglasses to make a call Bob's burgers special of the day.
I think Fez's homeland is South Africa or Guyana, these were once countries ruled by the Dutch. Guyana became a republic in 1970 which lines up neatly with the timeline in that 70s show.
This list in completely invalid for not only NOT including this, but for it not being number one: "Afternoon everybody" "NORM" (and quickly afterward, "Norman," during the Shelly Long years) "(seemingly innocuous question)" "(funny response from Norm)"
Honestly I don't like title of your sextape joke, it always seemed to me like a worse version/ripoff of far superior thats what she said. Also, I would love to see highly underrated running joke from Canada's Trailer Park Boys which is Julian and his inseparable drink on such list.
For Everybody Hates Chris, it was the FATHER that had 2 days. So loved this one. Everyone have a blessed Sunday December 31, 2023 at 5:07PM. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

Was going to say that, another good running gag on there was every time he went into the basement Tim would always bang his head on that pipe.
The invisible characters were always my favorite. Mrs. Wolowitz from The Big Bang Theory, Stanley Walker in Will & Grace, Al's mom from Home Improvement etc.
I liked that Maris never being seen on camera on “Frasier” had ties back to nobody ever seeing Vera on “Cheers”.
If you want to picture what Maris might look like, that dog that Niles adopted is a pretty good example lol
a few favorites not mentioned:
Wilson's hidden face ( Home Improvement )
"Did I do that?"/"Look what you did..." ( Family Matters )
the Barry White dance in the unisex ( Ally McBeal )
Janice ( Friends )
the broken step ( Modern Family )
savage Lily ( Modern Family )
Cam & Phil don't realize what they just said ( Modern Family )
fake ads ( Working )
DrugCo ( The Drew Carey Show )
the Feeny call ( Boy Meets World )
Urkel on Family Matters “Did I do that “. Or Chandler on Friends famous start to his iconic quote “Could I be anymore ______”
Steve Urkel Family matters: "Did I do that?"
Al Boreland Home improvement: "I don't think so, Tim"
Tim Taylor Home Improvement: "More power" or "Oh no..."
Dinosaurs Baby Sinclar: "Not the Momma! Not the Momma! Not the Momma! Not the Momma!" Earl Sinclar: "You do that one more time and I'll throw you across the room." *pauses* Baby: "NOT THE MOMMA!!!"
I liked that in Sister Sisters a lot of characters said “Go Home Roger” when he was being annoying and they wanted him to leave
What about Robin Sparkles? And why does everyone skate over the fact that two of the best running gags came from the same episode of
How I Met Your Mother?
How ridiculous that Arrested Development had classic running gags and not ONE is mentioned.
-The Chicken Dances
-Tobia's Gay References
-NO TOUCHING!
-Literal Doctor
-Oscar's obvious hints about being Buster's father
How I Met Your Mother has the most and the best. Really deep lore for a sitcom
Mind you the show had so many such as:
- Frank’s “Holy Crap”
- Marie’s “I don’t like that…”
- Debra calling Ray “idiot”
- Robert’s “Is this about me?”
Jazz always wore the same shirt because they reused the same footage every time he was thrown out.
Thr invisible characters were always my favorite! Mrs. Wolowitz from The Big Bang Theory, Stanley Walker from Will & Grace, etc.
Sheldond knocking and jazzy Jeff getting thrown out are my two favorites.
The slap bet was pretty funny but you feel a bit sorry for Barney and Sheldon’s knocking is something I do sometimes just when I feel like it
You got Jazz as #1. That is my favorite "Funniest Sitcom Running Gag."
Does "Legen- wait for it -Dary!" Count as a running gag?
Not sure if it's a gag per say. However...
Supernatural. When they would play "Carry On My Wayward Son" in the intro. 😭 😭
Well, over the recap "the road so far..." at the end of the seasons. IIRC, this was meant to be a one-off but went over so well they decided to continue it.
I say Ugly Naked Guy from FRIENDS
Definitely "picture it". Happy sunday afternoon, Sophia, take care and God bless you, and greetings from Colombia to you as well.
Flo saying "Kiss my grits" throughout Alice, usually to Mel.
Yeah I like we never got to see Howard's mom in Big Bang Theory & Al's mom in Home Improvement
0:22: I like this one, but I think, Julius knowing the actual price, even exact change, of everything is a way funnier running gag. That and Mr. Omar’s “Tragic! TRAGIC!”
It's a crime that "How you doin?" from Friends wasn't mentioned.
Friends; we were on a break + ugly naked guy + Ross and his 3 divorces + mr. Heckles
Big bang theory; Howard’s mother + Sheldon’s spot + the roommate agreement +penny and alcohol + the elevator
How i met your mother; Barney’s job
Yep, and IIRC the elevator was finally fixed in the last episode.
I always say Will making fun of Uncle Phill's Fatness or Baldness
WE WERE ON A BREAK !
Love on Chuck when they say “Chuck, stay in the car”.
It's always the same shirt because they only filmed him being thrown out once.
I like running gags on the monkees. Like when someone or something disappeared and they would say "they're gone!" and when someone did something he shouldn't do they'd say "don't do that"
I vote for the running gags on The Muppet Show, Ally McBeal & Dead Like Me.
DANCING BABY
Where is the gag of Kramer always blasting through jerry's door???? 😱😱😱😱😱
There are way too many to count but if you want to back enough, the Dick Van Dyke Show: buddy making fun of Mel’s bald head. It’s absolutely classic
Chandler's way of speaking being mocked.
Surprised that Steve Urkel saying did I do that is not on his list
I was hoping Fran always saying she’s 29 would be on here or Nile’s and cc burns (from the nanny)
Phoebe's quirkiness and sad childhood were a running gag on Friends.
They forgot "ugly naked guy" and "Could ___ BE___?" from Friends.
"That's what she said" is the best!
The running gags from Married With Children
Ahh There we’re so many if you included *Will & Grace* . But *Everybody Loves Raymond* & *Fresh Prince* are classics as well.
Huge props to the team for not making “WE WERE ON A BREAK” from Friends number 1- I am shocked gagged and gooped
I was thinking Regina Phalange
9:11 ohhhhhhh that's where the WrestleTalk joke comes from
Brooklyn 99 has forever changed the way I say “nice”
Hi I'm Larry. This is my brother Darryl and this is my other brother Darryl.
Honorable mentions:
1. "Go home, Steve" and "I don't have to take this. I'm going home" (Family Matters)
2. The couch (The Simpsons). I don't know if it counts since it's used in the opening of the show.
Very hilarious!
The Niles wife being someone you never see was a spinoff of Norm's wife, Vera, also never being seen on Cheers, the show Frasier was spunoff from.
Toni calling Mya's son by the wrong name on 'Girlfriends' should've received a mention. #jawannaman, #jinglejangle #jimmyjam #jollyrancher 😂😂😂
To be honest I thought the Sheldon knock would be in the top 3, IF there are any other funny gags in comedy shows will definitely hope for an eventual part 2 please 🤞?
RIP Capt Holt😢
😎🍻😎
Nine nine
My Leg from SpongeBob and Back in ST. Olaf from the golden girls
Letterkenny has a few. "To be fair..." comes to mind as fairly benign one. There's also a running joke about ostriches, but it's not PC.
"The Office should have ended after Season 7. It honestly wasn't as funny after Michael left.
So true 👍🏼.
I agree. Though I did like the Finale. That’s about it! It’s one of my favorite shows (only seven seasons).
That’s what she said.

Jack benny being cheap
Fred Sanford going through eyeglasses to make a call
Bob's burgers special of the day.
i love douchebag jar slap bets and jazz been thrown out 😂
You really missed Wilson from Home Improvement?
The best running gag is that Charlie can’t read in it’s always sunny
The Double Entendres Son Of The Beach (2000-2002)
Scrubs cox calling jd a girls name or eagle
See you next year
What about Jamie holding back his fist bump to Braxton on the Jamie Fox Show? He also made the sound of a car slamming on the brakes.
Tony getting Mya son name wrong should be on this list
Cat: one time my brother ask the host and see if he can be in the video but the host declined it
Tori vega: why?
Cat: bc he's very disturbing
I think Fez's homeland is South Africa or Guyana, these were once countries ruled by the Dutch. Guyana became a republic in 1970 which lines up neatly with the timeline in that 70s show.
Fez..... south Africa.......buddy
Les Newsman's moving bandage without any mention of it. WKRP
There was one episode we're jazz got thrown in the house
The Mariss gag on Frasier should have been replaced by Vera from Cheers.
Though honestly, the "Norm" bit from Cheers should be on here
Come on? The Golden Girls only gets a passing mention! WRONG!
Frasier ❤
What about the ottoman in "The Dick Van Dyke Show?"
3 words... How you Doin'?
RIP Andrë B.!
we were on a break!!!!!!
We were on a break!!!
Pineapple How I Met Your Mother
fez could be from st maarten
This list in completely invalid for not only NOT including this, but for it not being number one:
"Afternoon everybody"
"NORM" (and quickly afterward, "Norman," during the Shelly Long years)
"(seemingly innocuous question)"
"(funny response from Norm)"
what you talkin bout willis should be on this list
False, number 1 should've been Wilson in Home Improvement and never seeing his complete face at one time.
You could have made a Top 10 out of Arrested Development alone. And not 1 got on your list.
Modern Family is Not in NBC it starts in ABC.
I completely agree with #1. 👍
Those who agree
👇
Douchbag jar
Honestly I don't like title of your sextape joke, it always seemed to me like a worse version/ripoff of far superior thats what she said. Also, I would love to see highly underrated running joke from Canada's Trailer Park Boys which is Julian and his inseparable drink on such list.
Wtf where is how you doin, or from two and half men, you don't pay a rent
"I'll give you extra rent money"
"You don't pay rent!"
"I'll start paying rent"
For Everybody Hates Chris, it was the FATHER that had 2 days. So loved this one.
Everyone have a blessed Sunday December 31, 2023 at 5:07PM. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
I can't agree with the "My man has two jobs," bit. Its not really all that funny.
No FRIENDS we where on a break? Only the biggest sitcom ever?? WTF. This page sucks
Agreed!!!
First
You would have been first if it weren't for bots.
