I think it's actually a licensed Hendrix jacket, I seen that jacket being sold in a store on 6th street in Austin about 12 years ago, Hendrix family released a few Hendrix inspired shirts & jackets like this.
I've been listening to this album since 5th grade in 1984 and not once have I ever heard that as a trill. Weird that so many other people somehow heard it.
I'm surprised that people hear it differently. The way you played it is like I've always heard it. I'm surprised people thought there was a trill there.
MIKE PLEASE! I need another video about “Heart’s Magic Man” !! It’s been my favorite song of all time since i can remember. It doesn’t even matter what the video is. you’re the only guy that can do this song justice. I would 𝚕𝚘𝚟𝚎 for you to breakdown the layout of the song and why parts are where they are. All i want in my life is to be able to write songs like this song. thank you, mason.
There's never been a question for me that that was a single note. 'Playing the effect' is even more prevalent in bass. You can find so many bass covers on TH-cam you see people playing the kick drum as additional bass notes.
This delay used musically is pushed all the way in the song "Hina" from D L R's Skyscraper, by Vai of course. But the first master of this was Brian may! He used modified tape echoes, with extended tape travel and head position to construct 3 way harmonies with him self. Outstanding.
It doesn't even sound as trill. It's more like A repeated second time, a little lower in volume. Just like delay would do. I wouldn't use the trill when without delay; I would just repeat the A note with a little less dynamic.
Cheers Mike. I’ve never particularly liked this solo and now I understand why - you’re right, it is actually quite sparse in itself, and I don’t like the dissonance created by the delay fighting itself, I think it’s just noisy. But that definitely explains it.
I knew Prince didn't play that note (it's obvious if you watch any footage), but I could never figure out where it came from. Great explanation and demo!
@@TheArtofGuitar Do you provide tab for purple rain? yuo should start providing tabs of stuff people want because like you demonstrated in your old videos lots of tab books are not accurate so itd be nice if people could learn the right way to play their fave songs
Nice Video, Good to see these analytical videos, one song that's bugged for years is the guitar solo in ( The One and Only ) by Chesney Hawks. Basically it's the really fast guitar outro run , which everyone seems to have it different version and the harmonic bit in the middle. Would really love a definitive answer to what is actually played. thanks
I didn't hear a trill. I wonder what those people think of Edge's parts. Let's be honest... it's hard to guess unless you see a clear video and that still may not be enough, especially with tons of effects, multiple instruments and other overdubs. I've found errors in the big white Beatles music book that covers their entire collection! Good job to you!
I'm late to the party, but I agree, there is no trill, I've listened to it hundreds of times and it's just the one note. I will even double down and say I disagree with you about the delay, its not that either. While I am guessing now, its just the echo from playing in a stadium environment.
Love the super Prince jacket! The 14 details vid was awesome! Had it in my head all day 😊, ended up listening to the soundtrack at work. As long as it sounds good, and makes everyone feel good, I don't think it matters a whole heap how someone plays it 🙂. The delay really does add soo much to it, love it!
This same thing happens with the riff right after the intro in ain’t talking bout love. People play that Amin chord with a triplet feel. But it’s not. That’s his delay creating it.
Wtf is wrong with some people's ears? There's NEVER been a trill in that part. The notes just ring out. Seriously, get your hearing checked if you're one of the people who thought Mike wasn't playing that part right, your hearing is wired backwards or something. EDIT: Okay, I know what's happening. People have been playing the solo off tabs and just mindlessly following along with them without considering that maybe the person who originally laid it out was wrong, but everyone just copied off of those wrong tabs and now they all assume that's how it's played, even managing to convince themselves they hear a trill at that part when there isn't one. There is no trill. There never was.
I thought you’d like to see. This is the actual performance (with some edits and extra tracks) from the album (same with a few others from the movie) th-cam.com/video/SvvqYK8J0S4/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared

Thanks for addressing my comment. I'm talking about the original recording, not the various live versions on youtube. In the original album version, he trills on the very first one of each phrase, but not every one. It's like: 5 4-5-4, 5 4, 5 4, /7. If it was caused by a delay pedal, it would happen on every one, not just the first of each phrase. He's a monster guitarist and musician in general, so it's inevitable that these discussions are going to happen.
There is no trill. The reason you don't hear it every time is because he varies the note length on occasion, meaning when Prince held the note longer, it didn't have the delay snap back in the same spot. When he cut it off sooner, you'd hear the delay. It's pretty obvious that the second note is not fingered. It's just delay.
th-cam.com/video/q_sHFZWeOUo/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=RaoulandtheKingofSunsetTown This is footage of the live track that was recorded for purple rain. around the 10 minute mark he plays this lick, looks like a trill to me
@@AdvenuringTime I see you posting this on a lot of comments but if you watch that video you'll see that he's just muting the string with his other fingers which allows the delayed note to come through even more!
@@sqidvishus Click the link from @advenuringtime in the thread here. You'll see the original unaltered footage of the live performance from the movie. There's clearly no delay added. He's playing the notes. This isn't even arguable.
Never liked Prince, i think its his voice. He is not a good singer to my ears, voice sound very weak and his songs are pretty boring. Purple Rain is garbage to me haha
I disagree. I think people who play the trill are doing a smart thing if they don't have a delay effect handy. It's a cool substitute.. I'm just being super picky because I just made that details video. :)

Same here. I even really *tried* to hear it that way when Mike replayed the original clip here and… nope. Just sounds like a straight note to me.

I literally NEVER thought Prince played trills during that part. I guess that’s my weird (correct) ears.

I never thought there was a trill there. It sounds wrong to me when you played with a trill. I do hear a unison bend in that other part though.

Call me simple but that's my favorite part of that solo.
I agree with your ears. Prince was working smarter, not harder!

That solo reminds me of another song but I can't place it..
Faithfully by Journey?
I never heard a trill it was always just the delay
Whenever Prince used guitar effects, it never sounded anything but tasteful. Because the parts he played were made of pure music.
Even when he does extreme effects like the flanger in Let's Go Crazy. Love it!
What delay and chorus pedal are you using?
Really? I never heard the thrill... might feel inclined to put a dead note there tho
I never heard it as a trill, it does not trill at all. I have played that line for years by simply picking every note.
