Caitlin, thank you so much for your video!
What is the best diameter for making a pillar candle?
I’m referring to a pillar candle mold exactly like the one you used in your video.
    Many thanks 🙏💟

I don't know about the best, but the most common pillar size is 3" in diameter. This is the size I used in the video :)

Gosh, wish we were closer, like to pay you to let me hang out for a day or so to help, and learn basic ameatur candle making 101! I am not opening a business, just want to learn for self, & gifting to family & friends. It's nice to see how easy this process, here is. I got a wick candle maker for Christmas, but do you recommend the presto pot for easier and more volume of wax? Heck girl, even following exact instruction, two times, Jerry and I end up w/ unscented candles 😖 using wick machine. Not crazy about it at all

I'm going to be doing a whole series on candlemaking. Everything from which wicks to use, to wax to fragrances and all the basics. It's ALOT of making unscented candles at first until you figure out the right combination.

@@CandeoCandleSoyCandles yes indeed...i have 7 jars of our last candle attempts, unscented in my cupboard. In time I guess I'll be cleaning 😒 them to reuse the jars. Jerry's like, "they'll clean the air at any rate" burning these unscented fops. I'll wait til we progress in your candle- making videos, I want scent in my stuff! Looking forward to this, thanks so much for including us

Thank you for your channel and informtion Caitlin! I came here to see if I could get information re: why my candle wicks always break off after approx 2 or 3 hours after the first burn. They are brittle, and I keep hearing to always trim the wick to be approx. 1/4 inch, but that is non existent due to the breakage. I start with raw hemp twine that I turn into container candle wicks by dipping it into soy wax, I have also tried beeswax with the same result? The wick is practically correct because I almost get a full melt pool. If anyone knows a solution, please do let me know.

I have an idea of what may be going on, but let me ask a few more questions just to clarify. When you say you get almost a full melt pool, have you been able to successfully burn a candle all the way to the bottom? How much wax is left over on the sides of the candle? Have you had any trouble with wicks going out?

I appreciate your pondering what the problem couljd be...... from what you are saying, I am sensing that my wick needs to be bigger, but -- then the flame gets too big/hot for the glass container.... and no, I have not burned a candle completely down because the flame gets weaker into 2 -- 3 hours. Sometimes there is possibly around 1/16 of an inch of wax left on the container sides after 3 hours and sometimes there is no wax left on the container sides but with a dim, weak flame...and yes the flame practically going out.....sigh!!! lately I have been experimenting with putting shea butter and/or cocoa butter on the raw wick both with and without wax due to natural stearic acid, but I noticed dark debris from the wick in the melt pool.... My latest thought is to try adding other, harder vegetable waxes to the ecosoya wax to see what happens. Anyway Caitlin you are one cool human to reaah out..and I wish for good fortune to come back to you in spades!! 🤗

It could be that the wick is too small and the next size up is just way too big, that happens sometimes, but I'm actually wondering if your wick may be getting clogged. This would be more likely to cause the wick to break off entirely after burning as the entire wick is being carbonized all the way to the melt pool. When a candle is burning properly, the top half of the wick above the melt pool (the part that's centered in the flame) will be carbonized, while the bottom half will be utilized through capillary action to pull liquid wax up to the flame to keep it burning. If the wick gets clogged, the capillary action doesn't work properly, and in my experience, this causes the entire wick to become carbonized and brittle so it will just break off entirely or disappear into the candle. The symptom of this is often a flame that gets weaker and weaker and eventually goes out. A wick that is too small will often keep burning all the way to the bottom, it will just cause really bad tunneling of the candle as not all of the wax is consumed. Where a clogged wick on the other hand, will just get weaker and weaker until if eventually goes out. Wick clogging can be caused by a lot of things! Water getting into your wick, wax or fragrance oil, other contaminants such as mica or incompatible additives. It could even be caused by raw wick that has been damaged in some way or is faulty. Incompatibility of wax with your wick choice can also cause this. Soy wax, especially some of the newer blends with coconut or apricot, can be a beast to find the right wick. I've never tried hemp wick myself, so I can't speak from experience there, but that may be the problem. Before I started making my own soy blend, my favorite wicks by far were CDN wicks. They handled soy like a boss with no mushrooming and a nice clean burn. I hope this helps!

@@CandeoCandleSoyCandles @Candeo Caitlin... i am going to read and re-read this over and over again. Does it help!? OMG ....welll yeah! no duh time or doubt that it helps a whole slew of people other than me too! ......"clogged wick" YES!!! very possibly!!! ...the time, thoroughness and constructive thought process to lay it out like you have is entirely invaluable - despite it solving my dilemma or not!!!!! You are moving us all forward with your contributions and support. From everything you have said on first read, I am thinking it is either this particular hemp twine, moisture in it, or my older Ecosoya wax has got some moisture in it - despite me not seeing it - I have not even used color or fragrance yet (nor do I think I want too).... I still want to try to find a way to use hemp for the wick though ------- I have looked into Candeo Candles with absolute steller awe in all the detail and categories and variations that you offer everyone! You can be sure I will be going to Yelp and Google Reviews - with great timing before the holidays. Thank's a million, and that is not enough! You are established but still care about us!
