    Here is a look at the Silky Katanaboy 500mm with XL teeth. I have been told time and time again in the comments of my videos that I should get a folding buck saw, well I have one I never have much cared for it, they don't like to cut straight and they are very limited on the size of wood that can be cut. For the same size and weight the Silky Katanaboy is a far superior saw and I look forward to using for my firewood processing and trail building this winter.

    Very good review, My Katanaboy 500 was delivered a week ago and found it a must collecting firewood on my dog walks. Just one thought, I could not get my head around the locking screw, so I cut it off and hey presto there is no need for it.

    If you can not get the log into a cantilever position, always start the cut from the bottom. Always think about which side will open up and which side will pinch closed.

      Take a look at the Silky Bigboy its a bit smaller but quite honestly I find this saw a little too big and cumbersome and I much prefer the size of my Silky Bigboy.

    That's enough to make me want a Katanaboy for bigger logs. I have a Gomboy for my basic camp kit, and for processing smaller firewood or cleaning up young tree growth on my property, it's hard to beat. Even for those who like their bucksaws, it's definitely worth keeping a Silky in the toolkit.

    This does replace a buck saw and it far more useful. The fold down size and case makes it way more portable. I used to carry a large buck saw in my truck but since getting this saw I haven't used a buck saw. This saw cuts way faster and is far easier to use than a buck saw

  • @briargoatkilla

    LOL. I could see the check in the big log and kept saying "just a little further". Great looking saw! I'm always looking around for tougher and faster when it comes to saws. The Bahco peg tooth blade cuts our eastern hardwood great, but really it's just a flimsy little steel ribbon. The bigger Corona fixed blades are tough as nails but not quite the cutters that the Bahco peg tooth is, and aren't very packable. Now that Katana Boy seems to have it all, or at least as close as you can get to it. This video has really got me thinking about dropping over a hundred on a dang saw I might use ten times a year. LOL. My wife is gonna be thrilled.

    • @PrimalOutdoors
      @PrimalOutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +briargoatkilla Lol, well I am sorry if I cause some marital strife, but I think you would really like this saw for your deer camp chores. The blade seems to be fairly stiffs and I didn't have problems with it wanting to bend on me when I would bind it. I only cut dead wood in this video which it did great at but I tried it on some live Willow I have here at the house and it went through it like butter. The saw is expensive but I figure most of us are willing to dump over hundred on a good knife so why not for a good quality saw.

    I've had the Silky Sugoi 14.5 inch fixed blade for nearly a year and have used it mainly with hard-wood and often. It has a lightweight scabbard that comes with it... found it at a Forestry supply while it was marked down a bit. My dad used it with me prepping a game field and he said it is a good saw. Let the tool do it's work, be safe.

    Great video Jason. I am very interested in getting a quality and dependable saw. Your video makes me definitely want to consider getting one of the Silky Saws that you are showing. They are obviously expensive and I would imagine that the replacement blade would be very expensive too, but, I am thinking that if you love the outdoors it is worth it. You need quality gear out there if you want to do it right. Thanks for sharing this video (my fellow Oregonian.) Enjoy the outdoors! -Terry

But I think the Agawa Canyon 21 Boreal Saw is better. It's stronger. I got it because for its compact size compared to the Silky Katana 500 it's a great saw to even build with I also got the Crazy Horse Scabbard. I have the All Purpose Blade on. But a extra Aggressive saw blade in the Scabbard. The saw exchange is easy peasy nice and easy.,,. p

    Watched Survival Russia, Canadian Prepper and I bought one, sold it to my brother and bought the 650...It seems to cut faster if you change the angle of the cut once in a while and maybe jump back and forth across the log...The 650 I got on eBay from Japan for $209, free shipping.

      +lizzoid I have to opportunity to use the 500 a lot and I think its about as big as I would want to go for myself, even it can be a somewhat of challenge to use unless the log is very stable allowing you to step back and really take advantage of the full throw of the blade. I have really found the Bigboy to be my preferred saw most of the time.

    I will stick with the bucksaw. I can pack alot of extra blades that weigh practically nothing. Most bucksaw blades are 10-18 bucks. With most Silky's the blade costs as much as the saw. Now dont get me wrong, its a pretty cool saw.

    Yes the katana is bigger than a normal sized 16-24 inch bucksaw. But the saw does get whippy at the handle, and at the end during vigorous sawing. A bucksaw blade is firm in the framework and in its cut. If you want to cut TIMBER, log cabin logs, or stumps, then yes the katana is a good item. Canadian Prepper also used the saw, and you can see all the mentions I detail about the saw.
    It all depends on what you want to do with a saw, green/dry wood, big/small wood, construction, bushing, prepping, housework, etc. If you want a katana in a camping situation, then you are making a base camp, or a hunting/tree stand, etc. For us (ultra)lights, we only need to cut 4 inch diameter (which is huge for any hiker, camper, fisherman, hunter, bushie, preppie, bug out, hidey hole event).
    If you use a small foldable blade (3-4 inch saw range), and have a breakdown metal or wooden bow or bucksaw (12-14 inch saw range) , then you could do all light and medium size-work. Otherwise, take a katana in the trunk when you get to where you want your base camp (18-24 inch saw range) large size-work.
    Still, personally impressed with this product, if I had the above situations.

    • @PrimalOutdoors
      @PrimalOutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +John Lord I can''t say I totally agree with you, the Katanaboy I felt was very firm and I did not notice the whippy action you talk about, plus I have used bucksaws and feel for the most part there handles have a tendency to shift in the hand and they don't like to cut straight. If your an ultra light summer hiker then I would agree something like the Bahco Lander is really all you need, but for winter camps in my area at least, a Bahco or comparable size saw definitely would not be my first choice as I am trying to get wood that will burn longer (6 to 8 inch rounds) and since we don't have hardwood I have to use pine or fir and 4 inch and smaller size pieces burn too quickly. As for packability the size and weight of the Katanaboy is comparable to my folding Bucksaw and it eliminates the need for smaller folding saw so in the end your actually cutting pack weight down. I definitely appreciate your thoughts on this matter but I have personally used axes, bucksaws, bow saws, small folding saws and tomahawks for winter wood processing and outside of using a chainsaw I feel the Katanaboy leaves them all in the dust when it comes to cutting firewood to manageable lengths keeping in mind I am after 6 inch and larger size rounds. If you have hardwood and a stack of 4 inch pieces of wood will keep you burning a nice fire through the night with out having to re-feed it every hour then I can see where the Katanboy may be overkill but even at that I would choose one of the smaller Silky folding saws over a bucksaw. I hope you don't find my response argumentative it is just my thoughts based on my experience with the different tools in my area, I really do appreciate your comment.

    • @PrimalOutdoors
      @PrimalOutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, though if I had to do it all over again I think I would just get the Bigboy, the Katana boy is great but unless what your cutting is secured and you can use both hands it can be a little difficult to use, the Bigboy can still cut good size pieces of wood and be handled with one hand. I also recommend the medium tooth blade as it seems to work well on seasoned and green wood.

  • @CoyoteWorks01

    That thing looks like it works awesome. Do you know the weight on it? Is it something that would be practical to pack in or is it more of something you would use out of the vehicle? it almost seems like if you packed that saw you could potentially do without an axe.

    • @PrimalOutdoors
      @PrimalOutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Coyote Works I honestly haven't weighed it, mainly because I could tell by holding that it would be no problem to pack. I actually picked up a Cold Steele Pipe Hawk and between the two of those items I think I will have my wood processing handled in fairly lightweight setup.

      I have the Silky Big Boy, which has a blade about twice as long as the Bahco Laplander, but that katanaboy looks like it can do some serioux cutting.

    • @PrimalOutdoors
      @PrimalOutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Gary Cloud I don't know I haven't weighed my bucksaw or the Katanaboy but I would say they are very comparable. If I remember when I get home I will weigh them but I feel the difference is going to be insignificant.

    Again, silky is nice for clearing trails, short term bushcraft camp. Sven saw 21 inch is way better for bug out bag, day pack, long term survival for a small cabin, debris shelter, cutting bone, etc. They are completely two different saws, for two very different purposes.

    • @PrimalOutdoors
      @PrimalOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We all have our own opinions and I say use what works best for you, but I will use my Silky all day every day and twice on Sunday over the Sven saw.

    How many hours do you get from a blade before sharpening, and how would one sharpen that blade ?

    • @PrimalOutdoors
      @PrimalOutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have no way telling how many hours you can get out of a blade there are far too many factors involved, at this time I do not know if you can sharpen it, at this point I have not needed to sharpen or replace the blade.

    Manual saws are good for precision joinery, not for heavy duty work. Just use a 300usd italian or jap made chainsaw like oleomac, stiga, dolmar, echo etc.. Good value for the price and easy to maintain

      all true, but this thing is lighter and doesn't need fuel and packs down to a very slim package and doesn't make nearly as much noise which is perfect for going thru the woods when you're trying to hide from socialist dictators

    I love Silky saws, including that one, but it is not a bucksaw killer. You can't always make something better by making it bigger, and that's the case with the 500. It is a good saw, but it is not as good as a full size bucksaw.

    • @PrimalOutdoors
      @PrimalOutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +James Ritchie I respect your opinion, but I couldn't disagree more. I would love to see you do a video and show me cutting 13 inch log that is laying close to the ground like the one I show in this video, I am not saying bucksaws can't cut wood good, I have a bucksaw with Bahco dry wood blade and it cuts awesome not as good as the Silky in my opinion but the big problem is I can't cut large wood because of the handle, in fact the handle is always in the way, have you ever tried to trim a tree with tons of branches with a bucksaw. So can a bucksaw cut wood absolutely but the handle makes it clumsy and cumbersome and the Silky's are just far more versatile in my opinion.

    That's a cool saw, but my $20 Irwin pull saw is just as sharp, just as fast, much thinner kerf(less physical material being cut, and can fit just about anywhere with the blade detached. It doesn't have the reach that this one has, and blades won't last nearly as long, but I can buy 10 before I hit the price of this saw.
