That's why the music evokes the feeling of wild deserts and rugged mountains-that is where the music is born. Decades ago, groups of performers would travel across villages and towns on special occasions to perform this kind of music. The singing typically told stories from old times or new stories created by the performers themselves. For most people back then, this was one of the few forms of entertainment and one of the few ways to learn about the world beyond their small village. The harsh reality is that many of these performers were actually people with disabilities, such as blindness. This resonates with the NPC of the headless monk. These individuals likely took up performing because they couldn’t engage in more typical occupations like farming to make a living. Life was hard back then, but it was also full of happiness. I miss it so much. I’ve been thinking about picking this up as a hobby myself, so my kids know their roots.

On the surface it seems like Lingji is a "good guy". However, some scenes in this chapter, along with the character description texts that you can collect, indicate that Lingji was the one who orchestrated the whole tragedy of this desert kingdom. Basically (Spoilers Ahead): Long ago the kingdom lost faith in Buddhism, so Lingji sent the giant beetle to wreck havoc, perhaps intending to come in as a "saviour" and reignite people's faith in Buddhism (and by extension, in himself). However, the Yellow Wind Sage came along and (with the help of the time-travelling Destined One) defeated the giant beetle. The people of the desert kingdom ended up worshipping Yellow Wind and rats in general. This upset Lingji greatly. During the events in the Journey to the West novel, the protagonists (i.e. Wukong etc) passed by this kingdom, got antagonised by and eventually defeated Yellow Wind, who was then captured by Lingji. Thereafter, according to this game, the kingdom's citizens got turned into rats. (I've seen some theories online that Lingji was the one who did this to frame Yellow Wind as a devil). Right before the start of events of this game, the Celestial Court convinced a few Yaoguai Kings (including Yellow Wind) to help them defeat Wukong. Thereafter, they were given Wukong's relics as "reward" (later in the game, we learn that this was part of Erlang's plan to help Wukong be revived in a new body free of the Circlet's control.) Now newly empowered, Yellow Wind cut off / stole Lingji's head, used it as container for the relic he got and came back to rule the desert kingdom. When the Destined One (i.e. you) first pass by this place, Lingji (as the Headless Bard) starts manipulating you into defeating Yellow Wind for him. So yeah, it's true that Headless Bard's singing is quite charming, and as a representation of Northwest Chinese culture, it's great, however, in the context of the game's story, there's a sinister purpose behind it. Not everything Lingji says/sings is true. ... If you're wondering: wait, as a Bodhisattva shouldn't Lingji be above selfish motivations? Well, first off, Bodhisattvas, unlike Buddhas, can still be ensnared by emotions. Interestingly, the depiction of actual Buddhas are sparse in the game. Tathagata only appears in the flashback sequence of the final animated cutscene conferring titles upon Wukong & co. I think this was intentional on the developers part, to avoid directly implying that the Buddha himself was involved in all the sinister conspiracies within the story. (although this may change with upcoming DLCs). Maitreya (the "Buddha Boy") is not yet a fully fledged Buddha. (also, he seems to be a fairly nice guy so far) Secondly, Lingji is not exactly a Bodhisattva revered by real-life Buddhism. He was a fictional character introduced by the Journey to the West novel (written in the 1500s). Hence why the developers felt free to depict him however they want, in line with "the divine beings are not as good as you think" theme of the game. 😁

It's really the whole point of the game, Wukong trying to break free from the shackles of the deities that poise to use him for their own gains regardless of the Taoist and the Buddhist gods.
Thats half of it. The truth is the Kingdom was suffering from the sound of boiling sea that could kill babies. Lingji gave them the drum to drown out the sound. The kingdom prospers under Buddhism after that. However, the Yellow Sand King afraid that he would lose power over to religion and decided to suppress the religion, destroying temples, stripping all the gold from buddha statues and destroy them. The beetle was a karmic retribution sent from Lingji. After the Rat killed the beetle, the king got a lot of opposition for his Rat Reverence Edict, including from his sons, specially the first son. The king decided to just kill the people who oppose him and imprison his first born instead. This causes his third son to run away from the kingdom and never turns into rat. The rat curse was a karmic retribution from Lingji as well. The king is to blame for the kingdom’s downfall. It was his greed and fear that brought those punishment upon his kingdom.

Appearently in the Chinese version he speaks a very difficult dialect/language for mandarin speakers to understand. So the English translation went for Scottish accent. I kinda wish they gone with the Scots or Doric dialect of English to play into the Chinese dialect alittle more.
