Hey Jiggin Jerry! I'm planning on coming down to Charleston in early April this year to do some fishing. I'm from the mountains near Asheville and have little experience with coastal fishing. Been wanting to catch some sheepshead for the freezer, because I've heard they make for excellent eating. Would they still be biting good around the piers and docks at that time of year and what do think they would be hitting on for bait, or is there a better kind of fish to be targeting in early April? Any tips you have would be much appreciated! Also, I've really been enjoying your videos. Keep them coming!
Thanks Jerry. I'm going to come down there from Greensboro NC and get a 3 day license, and catch a couple of those. I'll need to find the nearest camp ground. Where do you recommend?
Hey Jerry i used your last video on trout fishing to catch my first trout on zman slim swims at the mt pleasant pier. I tried to catch sheepshead with frozen clams i bought at the pier shop with no bites. Is this a good bait to use or would you recomend a different bait this time of year. Thanks
Steven, Jiggin' Jerry here. It is great to hear that the ZMan Slim Swims are doing their job. As far as frozen Clams from the Pier, unfortunately, they do not work well for Sheepshead. The Clams are not indigineous to the area, and the local Sheepshead can sense that and usually refrain from biting. Fresh local Clams purchased in the area work the best. Of course, you will have to remove them from the shell and weave them on your hook. I recommend an Octopus hook or similar shaped in size 2 or 4 for best results. They also sell fine netting or occasionally I use a piece of pantyhose cut into small squares where I can wrap the Clam up inside and put my hook up through it. This helps keep the Clam on the hook longer and makes it easier for the Sheepshead to reach the hook without removing the bait. I hope this helps. Good luck out there and have fun fishing!
Hey, Jerry Ive never seen you fish at the Goose Creek pond by the police station I think you should try it one day there's catfish bass and all kinds day of sunfish, Thanks
Death Knight, it sounds like a place I just might have to give a try when the warmer weather finally comes back in and Jack Frost moves on. I appreciate the information. Tight lines!
First Class Pressure washing, Jiggin' Jerry here. I have used canned Clams and Oysters in other states like Florida where Sheepshead are more aggressive and have to fight for food and they worked. Unfortunately, I've tried to use canned Clams and Oysters locally and have never had success with Sheepshead. Fresh bait locally found always works the best for these Lowcountry Convicts. I hope this helps. Good luck out there and have fun fishing!
I notice you always talk about the underwater structure issues at the pier. Can you explain more about the pier and where NOT to fish. Is bottom fishing any good there.
Gene, Jiggin' Jerry here. Unfortunately, a large number of rebar has been left under the water twisted and standing straight up in numerous locations around the pier. Off of the end of the pier, you cannot bottom fish at all, but off of the right and left hand sides of the pier, there are a good number of locations you can bottom fish. The best thing to do is to come out to the pier during a low tide and look closely around the pier and in the water and try to memorize the debris locations. This helps each individual trying to fish the pier more than once, and of course, alerts you to what types of fishing techniques you can use around the pier. I hope this helps. Good luck out there and have fun fishing!
Randy, Jiggin' Jerry here. Certainly! I enjoy fishing with fans all the time, including helping them target all kinds of fish. I usually do not fish weekends, but I fish about three days a week, usually Mondays, Wednesdays and a Thursday or Friday, depending on tides. Feel free to come on out. If you see me, don't be shy. Come on up and join in.
Capt. Steve, it is good to hear from you. I was sorry to hear about your wife. Unfortunately, your battle from the incident may last you quite a long time. Just remember you have friends ready to cast a line with you when you get the chance. Jiggin' Jerry
xcellent choice; great eats; sheephead, flounder, pomp, drum (butterfly) are the best! redfish is overrated; it is good for a sportfish (caught reds from 20-48" and bored). reeffsih are the best!

Would you consider letting a fan fish with you one day for sheepshead?

I have fished with him on many occasions before I knew how good of a fisherman he was. He taught me a lot about fishing.
