- Progesterone in oil shots are self-administered injections when prepping for your frozen embryo transfer and thereafter. Here I share how I give myself the PIO shots, step by step. It's a process... so I had to divide it into 4 shorts!!
So obviously, I'm finally back in Korea preparing for my frozen embryo transfer (FET)! After seven back-to-back IVF egg retrievals last year, I am more than ready for my rainbow baby (or babies)! In this video, I share the medication I've been prescribed to prepare for my embryo transfer. Many forms of estrogen and progesterone to thicken and prepare my uterine lining for implantation. I share details of the steps I've taken after each doctor's appointment and also how the hormones have been rather difficult to deal with this time around.

My name is Hellynn and live in the US, but I've traveled to Korea (where I'm from) to undergo multiple rounds of IVF. Being 40 and trying to bring children into the world is hard, but I also have a condition called diminished ovarian reserve so I'm doing back-to-back IVF egg retrievals.
Navigating this world of infertility is definitely a challenge - a million new acronyms, hormones and protocols to learn - it's a lot. So I thought I'd just talk about everything I've been learning for the women out there who have had similar struggles. I'm also happy to share info with anyone who is interested in traveling to Korea for IVF, since it's much more cost efficient + high success rates here.
I am treating this YT channel as my diary, talking about the ups and downs of my journey to motherhood so that one day, hopefully, my babies will see how they were created... with fierce, enduring strength and love.

0:27 I think the bigger, thicker, longer needle is for IM (intramuscular) injections into the muscle which requires a deeper and thicker path into the body (such as the buttock) whereas the smaller tiny shorter needle is for SC (subcutaneous) injections into the fatty layer of the body, which is typically a much shorter and smaller path to reach (such as the lower abdomen).
I have no idea why some doctors prescribe progesterone via IM and others SC, nor do I know which gets absorbed better. I’ve even heard of some women only doing progesterone by mouth or vaginally in capsule form.
I’d like to hope the doctor chooses the route based off of successful statistical data - but how would they check it? You can draw your progesterone level from your blood and test it, but how would you know it was the medication or just yourself that gave you a progesterone in the “normal or high-normal range” especially if the progesterone medication was only meant to keep your level in the normal range and not above-normal. Idk. 🤷🏻♀️
Yes I think you're right! Mine is subcutaneous but they seem to use big needles for the intramuscular shots!
I was going to comment why her needle changed from an IM needle to a SC needle too.
Actually, her IM needle is my injection needle. I draw the PIO with a 22 (gray color) gauge needle and inject with that blue color 25 gauge needle.
She's lucky to only have to inject progesterone subcutaneously. 😀

I didknow there's an option to put progesterone in the fat layer rather than muscle - what's the name and any reason why your doc recommend it to be subc and not intramuscular - also the arm - is it a good site for the intramuscular?

Subcutaneous seems to be the newer less painful way to do it, after studies like this came out. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7731602/
But some people insist that intramuscular is better, but I tracked my hormones during my 2ww and my progesterone levels were just fine with the subq that I was prescribed in combo with the suppositories.
Intramuscular PIO is usually giving in the thigh or buttocks!
does the smaller needle reach the intramuscular area? because it's supposed to be intramuscular not like the other IVF meds
These are subcutaneous shots! PIO shots come in both intramuscular and subcutaneous forms

Mine dr gave me pils to eat and viginal pill not injection shots .mine first fet failed is this cause ?
Your dr gave every thing pills by mouth and viginal and inection shots ?
My doc gave me subcutaneous progesterone shots (belly) and vaginal suppositories. No oral.

My husband used to! But then I had to when he was away for work and I just got more comfortable with doing it myself 🙂
Take HCG injection day before FET
I took mine 36 hours before my ER

Mine are too! Like 2x if not 2.5x longer 😢
