So he responds with because I know my shit, I've played and beaten every game, and I've been with the vita since day one. Lol of course its paraphrased but I think I got it close enough but bottomline he is 100% he really does know his shit. Now he shows Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and makes me want to play it again. But I'm going to get it on the 360 since its BC on the xbox one and I'm sure I'll want to play it again sometime and will be able to on the Xbox series X.

can't speak to "rpgs" on the whole since i am almost exclusively a "jrpg" fan... but this was the era where i feel like the quality of console jrpg's REALLY began to slide compared to everything that came before it. the genre really has not recoverd since then with fewer and fewer notable jrpg's getting released as time goes on. on the ps3, i only really cared for ni no kuni and the final fantasy xiii series (to some degree). i can only count a handful of jrpg's on the ps4 that i would consider "must plays" -- persona 5, dragon quest xi, nier automata and... maybe ni no kuni 2? i mean, big budget console jrpg's are almost dead now with a few exceptions. on the snes and ps1/2, the library is mind boggling by comparison and this truly was the golden age that we took for granted. a lot of great jrpg's also found their way onto handhelds, especially the ds and psp. not saying the genre is dead now, but it is a shadow of what it once was and i generally find it difficult to get excited about modern jrpg's like i used to. p.s. compared to final fantasy xv, final fantasy xiii is a godsend lol... couldn't stand xv and i am very close to being done with the ip at this point. we'll see how xvi fares, but it looks like more of the same mindless action rubbish that s-e is known for now.
I completely agree with you that JRPGs went into decline in the PS3/360 era, and I do agree that SNES/PS1/PS2 eras were the golden years of the genre. However, I personally think we've seen a significant revival of JRPGs in recent times. DQ11, Tales of Berseria, Persona 5, Octopath Traveller, Xenoblade 2, Xenoblade DE, Fire Emblem 3 Houses, Trails of Cold Steel 1 - 3, Ys VIII, Trials of Mana - these are all killer titles in my book. Then we have more on the way: Tales of Arise, Bravely Default II, SMT5, Eiyuden Chronicles, Sea of Stars, Scarlet Nexus, Trails of Cold Steel 4. We're not quite basking in the revels of the glory days again, but I think we're making pretty decent strides in the right direction? P.S. I don't understand how anyone could prefer FF XIII to XV. XV was by no means perfect, but I personally thought it was infinitely better than XIII. XIII trilogy was abysmal in my humblest of opinions, but hey: different strokes for different folks and all that.
I didn't even play XIII and XV speaking of Final Fntasy, but I'm definitely going to give a try to XIII after watching this video. As for XV, I really don't find interesting and I will never play it I guess. And now we're waiting for FF XVI.. even if Square Enix has recently been not that reliable I really have high hopes for it: The producer will be Yoshida, who also worked on XIV and made it the incredible MMO it is today, literally saving that game from the ruin the original team brought it to. To this day it is probably the only MMO to even hope to compete with World of Warcraft, it really is a huge deal!
@@andyk9735 ffxiii had a great battle system. even if we accept that the story was far from great, it had its moments. for me, the battle system is the most important aspect of a jrpg and can make or break a game. the intensity of the active battle system and paradigm shifting made ffxiii a lot of fun to play! compare that battle system to the sluggish mess from ffxv and there is no contest. i also could not get over the medicocre storytelling and boyband focus of ffxv. it was quite an embarassment in my opinion. the world was too large and empty as well... really had no business being an open world game. so yea, at the end of the day, ffxiii is worth playing for its battle system alone in my humble opinion. i did not play the xiii sequels but intend to get around to it one day :D
@@RayWearer yup. the only saving grace of ff xvi is that the team is completely different than xv. nomura is nowhere to be found (a good thing) and the game will get back to the medievil setting. i like that aspect. what i don't like is the action battle system rearing its ugly head yet again but i will give it a chance. i believe they hired the battle director from devil may cry so it could very well be badass and surprise us all.

Good to see you back. I loved ff13. I beat 13-2 i still need to play lightning returns. Demon souls / dark souls is one of my favorite series ever. Im playing 3 still. Demons souls remake is why i will get a ps5.. so many great games to comment on here. I cant wait for the 360 video. Blue dragon and lost odyssey my favorite rpgs last gen.
last rebellion is one of the worst RPG's i played (not the worst but pretty close) when it came to NIS games on PS3 i did like ar tonelico 3 for what it is but i do understand why people did not like it since its super weird and i also love the first game on PS2 way better so its not an amazing game but it has its moments but ar nosurge was a great improvement imo. folklore was really good but i never finished it but hopefully soon. just noticed you used root letter music in a part of the video thats great

Heard great things and watching you talk about it makes me want to find a ps3 copy. Been getting back into my ps3 console lately. Miss the steller games that were released on it. I have a ps4 and recently got a ps5 and i absolutely love the new consoles, but there is still something so good about older games. They might not look as good as ps5 games but the stories and sheer amount of good games is worth returning too. You earned my sub!

In my opinion Demon's Souls was a love letter to elder gamers, not really "a new genre" but a tribute to old classics (a revival?): Rogue + Myst + Ultima Underworld + some technical fighting game (or rhythm game?). It's a Japanese take on western d&d so obviously it is super exaggerated and kinda off compared to I don't know ... dagerfall. And this makes it unique and mysterious. Anyway it is really a mix of Rogue in terms of structure + Myst in terms of story telling: a new mix but not a new genere.
I skipped the ps3 generation, so I think it would be cool for a too 5 ps3 rpgs, or top 3, to narrow it down,because I am starting to buy ps3 games, just need to pick up a ps3, and then find out the best couple rpgs to start with

Mass Effect 2 is amazing on the PS3 because it's a completely unique looking version. It's got it's own unique to PS3 lighting that the PC or 360 don't have, unless you mod it on PC of couse, but yeah.... ME2 on PS3 should be on this list. It got it's own version of ME2, that alone makes it's a must play.
@@GamezOfWar It looks visually unique. It's more harshly lit than the PC/460 version and it's using ME3's shadders. It's a pretty interesting little game. Performance is kinda meh, but that's the case with most Unreal Engine games on the PS3.
I thought FFXIII was ok and XIII-2 was better and 2 has a great sound track but with the FFXIII Series it's really worth playing though for Lightning Returns as it's the best of the 3 and makes the series really worth while. Graces is one of my fav Tales of games. Playing them at first as kids made me have more of a connection to the characters. I personally think Resonance of Fate is a bit overrated as it has next to no story The world is very pretty and so it's such a shame they didn't bother with the writing. The first Nier was better than the one on PS4, hopefully the remaster will reach more hands when it comes out.
Great video man . for me i never found any of the souls games interesting. For my style of rpg i found them boring. And its not the difficulty because i play alot of retro games and retro is laced with difficult games. My style of rpg are games like the Tales Of Series. Final Fantasy...Dragon Quest...The Trails Games and so on .
This may be the single best video on RPGs on TH-cam. You nailed it on so many great titles that I also love. And even though I knew the storyline and gameplay on many of them, I still learned so much that I didn’t know.
Oh no, no, no. Don't tell people to start the FF series with FF13. That's just cruel. The PS3 was just okay for RPGs. It's biggest saving graces were the Souls games. Compared to the PS1 and PS2, its library was inferior.

does anyone know the game, i cant remember what platform, or what the name is, but i think it was an rpg but in modern times, and you had to fight monsters, and you could be a voodoo guy, a priest, and asian kinda thing, and something else. one of the cinimatic trailers shows the 4 of them standing infront of a monster that comes out of the subway station after throwing a subway at them. if anyone knows the name please let me knoe, its driving me nuts. UI think it may have been ps3, but maybe it was ps2 or ps4, and now tha ti think of it, could be xbox too..
You've been killing it lately! I love all the content you've been putting out lately! Please keep it coming! 3 of my favorite rpgs on PS3 was The Witch & The Hundred Knight and Ni No Kuni & Valkyria Chronicles. Drakkengard 3 was awesome as well!
The Reconing was made by former baseball pitcher Curt Schilling. The story behind that game is insane. I recently picked up the Xbone version of the game at Wal-Mart for $10.00. I haven't played it yet but it looks cool.
I'm a die-hard final fantasy fan and your thoughts on the 13 series are the same point of view I have. I was a little thrown off at first but after getting into it I really fell in love with all three, and I think I did enjoy 13-2 a little bit better. All great games!!

Awesome list of games! My favorite that you mentioned is the Dragon Age Series! Such an amazing series and I can't wait to play the 4th one! Some of my favorites on the console were Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas, Mass Effect 2 (come on Bioware we know you're releasing the trilogy on PS4 just get it out already lol)! I still need to play Nier! PS3 may just be my favorite non portable system.. The only issue I have with it is the earlier model I have is kind of low on storage space 80gb.. I’m a huge fan of SRPGs like Valkyria Chronicles.. I tend to forget about Resonance of Fate.. It looks interesting and I really gotta check it out one of these days..

I honestly did not enjoy ff 13. I thought the paradigm shifting and shuffling back and forth throughout the battles was just so messy and tacky. It kinda confused my eyes looking at every thing move back and forth nonstop. I felt like it was hard to get a clear focus on what the hell was going on in the fight. The only post turn based ff games I liked were FF 12. I feel like FF needs to return to turn based to really win me over. The action rpg genre is cool but I just don't think it suits a game like FF. It suits a game like Fable not FF i.m.o.
I have to put some love to my PS3. I bought it like a year before the PS4 was announced and got it that late mostly because I wanted the console experience and thought that I will be able to create this diverse library. Got some of the console's highlights but never got into the console experience, mostly because I was moving to college and stuck to my ds and pc. Now that I have had the chance to catch up on my PS3 backlog, I do want to enjoy the system more and there are some games I have digital only there. Thanks for making this video, as a longtime subscriber is very helpful and have to say that I appreciate you coming from time to time to the channel as you are the only person I trust with game reviews. It is sad that i have every single game you mention and more (2500 and 28 systems) and yet I've yet to play any of them. It is a problem when you have the money but no time. Im 40 with a 6 year old dauhther... Unlike when younger got all the time but no money. She will take over all my collection but my guess is she might sell it all lol.
I like FF13 and its characters like Lightning, Snow, Hope... Every character has their own fears, pain and hopes.. and when they face their worst moment and are hopeless then they face Eidolon..

Bought my first ps3 in 2019 xD , also bought many many cheap games , ratchet and clank, jax and daxter, final fantasy etc, have to catch up

Dragon age was the successor to neverwinter nights. Great series although the ps3 version of inquisition has a game breaking glitch.
Nier is a extremely example and along with Metal Gear Solid that video game can have stories, even better than movies, tv shows and books.

Mass Effect 2 is amazing on the PS3 because it's a completely unique looking version. It's got it's own unique to PS3 lighting that the PC or 360 don't have, unless you mod it on PC of couse, but yeah.... ME2 on PS3 should be on this list. It got it's own version of ME2, that alone makes it's a must play.
No shit, I finished the 1st on 360 and therefore carried over on the 360..
But it looks like I need to check out the PS3 version for sure
@@GamezOfWar It looks visually unique. It's more harshly lit than the PC/460 version and it's using ME3's shadders. It's a pretty interesting little game. Performance is kinda meh, but that's the case with most Unreal Engine games on the PS3.

I thought FFXIII was ok and XIII-2 was better and 2 has a great sound track but with the FFXIII Series it's really worth playing though for Lightning Returns as it's the best of the 3 and makes the series really worth while. Graces is one of my fav Tales of games. Playing them at first as kids made me have more of a connection to the characters. I personally think Resonance of Fate is a bit overrated as it has next to no story The world is very pretty and so it's such a shame they didn't bother with the writing. The first Nier was better than the one on PS4, hopefully the remaster will reach more hands when it comes out.
I agree about the first Nier, I don’t think that will ever be topped..

Great video man . for me i never found any of the souls games interesting. For my style of rpg i found them boring. And its not the difficulty because i play alot of retro games and retro is laced with difficult games. My style of rpg are games like the Tales Of Series. Final Fantasy...Dragon Quest...The Trails Games and so on .

The PS3 was just okay for RPGs. It's biggest saving graces were the Souls games. Compared to the PS1 and PS2, its library was inferior.
I have recently been collecting more games for the PS3, and playing them. This is an awesome video explaining a plethora of RPG’s for the PS3, and a perfect video for me!
You mentioned NIS games is on fire again, please recommend me some cool games from them. I used to love NIS back in the ps2 era.

does anyone know the game, i cant remember what platform, or what the name is, but i think it was an rpg but in modern times, and you had to fight monsters, and you could be a voodoo guy, a priest, and asian kinda thing, and something else. one of the cinimatic trailers shows the 4 of them standing infront of a monster that comes out of the subway station after throwing a subway at them. if anyone knows the name please let me knoe, its driving me nuts. UI think it may have been ps3, but maybe it was ps2 or ps4, and now tha ti think of it, could be xbox too..

You've been killing it lately! I love all the content you've been putting out lately! Please keep it coming! 3 of my favorite rpgs on PS3 was The Witch & The Hundred Knight and Ni No Kuni & Valkyria Chronicles. Drakkengard 3 was awesome as well!
I also loved the witch ad the hundred knight, played it on PS4....really good game!
The Reconing was made by former baseball pitcher Curt Schilling. The story behind that game is insane. I recently picked up the Xbone version of the game at Wal-Mart for $10.00. I haven't played it yet but it looks cool.
I'm a die-hard final fantasy fan and your thoughts on the 13 series are the same point of view I have. I was a little thrown off at first but after getting into it I really fell in love with all three, and I think I did enjoy 13-2 a little bit better. All great games!!

Awesome list of games! My favorite that you mentioned is the Dragon Age Series! Such an amazing series and I can't wait to play the 4th one! Some of my favorites on the console were Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas, Mass Effect 2 (come on Bioware we know you're releasing the trilogy on PS4 just get it out already lol)! I still need to play Nier! PS3 may just be my favorite non portable system.. The only issue I have with it is the earlier model I have is kind of low on storage space 80gb..
I’m a huge fan of SRPGs like Valkyria Chronicles.. I tend to forget about Resonance of Fate.. It looks interesting and I really gotta check it out one of these days..

I honestly did not enjoy ff 13. I thought the paradigm shifting and shuffling back and forth throughout the battles was just so messy and tacky. It kinda confused my eyes looking at every thing move back and forth nonstop. I felt like it was hard to get a clear focus on what the hell was going on in the fight. The only post turn based ff games I liked were FF 12. I feel like FF needs to return to turn based to really win me over. The action rpg genre is cool but I just don't think it suits a game like FF. It suits a game like Fable not FF i.m.o.
I get it, there are some problems, but something about them I really dug.
I have to put some love to my PS3. I bought it like a year before the PS4 was announced and got it that late mostly because I wanted the console experience and thought that I will be able to create this diverse library. Got some of the console's highlights but never got into the console experience, mostly because I was moving to college and stuck to my ds and pc.
Now that I have had the chance to catch up on my PS3 backlog, I do want to enjoy the system more and there are some games I have digital only there. Thanks for making this video, as a longtime subscriber is very helpful and have to say that I appreciate you coming from time to time to the channel as you are the only person I trust with game reviews. No bs, just talking about what you like and why

It is sad that i have every single game you mention and more (2500 and 28 systems) and yet I've yet to play any of them. It is a problem when you have the money but no time. Im 40 with a 6 year old dauhther... Unlike when younger got all the time but no money. She will take over all my collection but my guess is she might sell it all lol.
I lucked out man, my kid and i share this hobby, so Xmas and bday is like double the fun!
After watching I picked up resonance of fate for ps4. Hope the hd version holds up. Don't know how I missed it on ps3.
