Same thing with the Knight itself. This is why in the end there was no such thing as a "Hollow Knight," especially because of the fact that the king put his will inside of them, as revealed by the mask maker. The only way the Radiance could've been stopped is by outright banishing/killing her rather than keeping her inside of a vessel.
@@honor6200 Yes, but she could have been wrong. Especially because of the fact that the Knight can deny a trade meaning it has a mind to think. Also, before the Hollow Knight boss battle, Hornet says "Ghost of Hallownest, you possess the strength to enact an end of your choosing. Would you supplant our birth-cursed sibling, or would you transcend it?" The fact that the Knight has a choice to either seal the Radiance in itself or enter it's sibling's mind and outright destroy her while commanding the void also proves that it has a mind.
@@vf06-d1h yeah, that line always confused me. There are multiple instances of the knight breaking the rules of a hollow vessel but for some reason we're being told that it is a perfectly hollow vessel? It's just a bit confusing.
What's interesting about this cutscene is that it contains an anachronism. The Knight didn't have the Mantis Claw, the Mothwing Cloak or the Monarch's Wings at that point in time. I like to interpret this as the Knight revisiting a especially traumatic memory, not an actual representation of how it happened. The real climb out must have been much more difficult.

@@redacted144 Maybe the knight climbed out of the birth place, fell and then later on went through deepnest and outside the kingdom. After all this is a memory, a dream. It probably has some changes here and there since the Knight's memories are messed from going through the wilderness, but team cherry wouldn't add this cutscene just to say: Oh yeah the knight imagined all of it. There is a physical change to the representation of the souls of two gods due to the Knight finally understanding it's origin.
Everyone’s talking about how sad this scene is but no one’s talking about how this man went through the White Palace with five health masks and one soul vessel. What a legend.

The Hollow Knight literally failed at everything the King said it would do. I love this game and its small details so damn much

The pale king had thousands of children and threw them into the abyss for a weird substance to hollow them out, climb out of the abyss, get murdered if they had a tiny bit of life in them, and proceeded to slam the door shut after finding a good one and left a sign saying "nothing to see here! We don't need to go here anymore! I did the thing! All good!" Like dude those are your c h i l d r e n-
What really makes me feel sad is the line "No voice to cry suffering."..... It's like the king actively removed his children's ability to speak so that he wouldn't have to hear them cry out in pain as he murdered most of them and allowed one of them to live so that it could live in eternal torment as a prison because he felt like that one was the one he managed to fully destroy...
Great way to put it, although I think it's simply because the vessels could be "hollow" so the Radiance won't be able to influence them, which in the end failed because none of the vessels could be truly hollow.

I noticed i Took a different path instead of the one that i thought was the way to the crystal heart, but I could of just use the other path to get to it.........so it’s a bigger OOF. Like i did all that hard work only to restart and not realizing I never made a Mistake, But I Just Did!! Now I have Less Geo, Less charms, and i don’t know. Maybe I just got reckt by the game LOL.
This scene had the same effect on me as the walk through New Home in Undertale: a moment when the game stops being merely just good, and starts being something very, very special.
I felt this exact thought, but as early as entering city of tears. Both city of tears and home from undertale made me understood why undertale and HK were such great games.
Just want to point out something: neither the Pure Vessel nor the Knight are truly hollow. As many pointed out with the former, they wouldn’t of looked back otherwise. With the latter it’s a bunch of little things. Sitting with Quirrel at the lake to start with. It doesn’t even matter if you chose not to, the Knight considered it. They considered joining a bug in companionship over fulfilled duty, instead of dismissing him as no longer relevant.
The transformation of Kingsoul always made me thing or feel as if the Knight's memories of everything coming together including the past must've made it sad to the point that they completely shut down to completely hollow themselves out. Clenching to the charm as you see this man who's loved by everyone and how the world of Hallownest, just...let you fall to your assumed death. That'd throw me over the edge and empty out whatever emotions I had left to focus. Edit 3 years later: No way! 2k?! And a pin?! Thank you!
A person's emotions can truly be a double edged sword at times. It can either throw you under the bus or save you're skin the very next moment. And only by forging relationships we can overcome even the most difficult of hardships.
I mean, good headcanon BUT- The Pale King doesn't really see the Knight, once he pulls himself a little higher to see, the Pale King is already seeing the other side.

What I love is that in this scene the Knight isn't supposed to have any upgrade not even his sword. That's why he's holding on that edge in the edge since without monarch wings or spade cloak that jump is impossible.

The abyss seriously gives me the creeps. Dumbass me was surprised when the abyss was actually an abyss and every time I went there, shade cloak, abyss shriek and void heart was memorable because of the crazy atmosphere.
The Abyss is one of the most atmospheric points in the game! The slow reveal of a few vessel skulls on a few platforms gives this sinking feeling similar to the Broken Vessel and seeing some in Nosk’s lair. It just increases as you go further and further down. Then you suddenly hit the bottom much more quickly than expected, yet it feels like it was the longest trek you’ve made. And all you see are the skulls of more vessels than you ever hope to count. They don’t cover the floor, they ARE the floor. You walk across their empty shells hearing them shift and clack and splinter. Then a familiar black shape floats up from the corpses, one you’ve seen your whole journey. Their different shapes don’t matter, they’re exactly like you. They take a swipe at you, you’re forced to retaliate, you see them sink back into the mass of corpses, then after a moment to breathe, you check the Hunter’s Journal: *Sibling.* These are all your siblings. Their corpses, their restless shades, and there are thousands of them. Thousands upon thousands of your broken kin shrewn across the Abyss. *Why?* A heaviness sinks over you as remember the tablet before the entrance of this place. *“Our Pure Vessel has ascended. Beyond this point lies only the refuse and regret of it’s creation. We shall enter that place no longer.”* You were *created*. You all were. By who? Why? Why were your siblings locked in here and left to rot? How are you alive? Hornet. She knew of this place. What more does she know?
Honestly I was more so intrigued and found it to be the coolest place out from the whole game cause I thought it couldnt get deeper down but it did and when I figured that out I was oddly fascinated by it not to mention they really nailed the old ancient look for it which just made it more fascinating
This scene not only proves the hollowness of the knight, but also simultaniously shows the flaws in the hollow knight. The hollow knight looks back and stares at the knight and his birthplace for a second, before following the pale king. This memory is needed to be remembered and dealt with as it is the only thing stopping the knight from being truly hollow, now that he has came to terms with the most tragic part of his existence. Edit: also the whole ‘you are the vessel. You are the hollow knight’ bit is amazing. The screen going black, the music stopping, and those words.. just damn there is something so great about it.
I don't think Hollow means having literally no mind. Rather, it means that having no mind beyond what's necessary for what it was built for. It cannot think beyond it's purpose if it's truly hollow. The Hollow Knight was meant to be good for combat hence vessels are capable of learning the nail arts. The Hollow Knight however was not meant to love it's father. Hence it wasn't truly hollow. Not sure if our Knight itself is hollow either, as it has shown a lot of moments of subtle compassion that cannot be explained by it being beneficial to it's goal. Like sitting with Quirrel at the Blue Lake's shore, etc
I think the hollow knight wasn't turning his back maliciously, because if he had helped him, the pale king would have turned around and saw that one survived, and would have killed the main character, whereas not helping him would keep him alive.
That could possibly be the reason why, and would further prove that The Hollow Knight wasn't hollow since it has a mind to think if that was its reason for not helping The Knight.
could also have been for survival; the HK helping the knight would be its own will, and as a ''pure vessel'' he is not supposed to really have that. if he had helped, he would've been thrown back into the void to rot among his siblings, because it would be clear he was defective as well.
Let’s face it: if a vessel were truly hollow, it wouldn’t move at all or even make choices, you just carry it up and shove the radiance inside it the radiance will be stuck like how we’re stuck in deepnest
Technically correct but also maybe not? Golems are "hollow" but can move and make actions that are commanded. If we see it a certain way, all of the vessels could technically be some type of golem. Golems can move and do a variety of things, maybe not make choices, yeah, but they would still fit the "Can move and make choices but are still hollow and lack a mind of their own". We can count on this on a creature made of purely void. That would be the collector, who seems to fit a bit more the Golem theory, same with the Kingsmolds. By definition, all of them shoudl be "Hollow" as they are only made of void. We can also say they are zombies, since in mythology zombies were just reanimated corpses that, of course, lacked a mind of their own and could only do very simple things. If applied to hollow knight that would be something like Focusing soul or using a sword for starters. Focusing soul it's important as it's the only way we have seen in which is possible to contain the Radiance. If a vessel can't do that then you can't really shove all the infection inside it
Little did the Hollow Knight know, but they'd be better off falling back down into the pit below. There was some sick irony in leaving one of their siblings to die, only to be subjected to a fate worse than death in the end.
I’m not sure if this is the interpretation that anyone else had but I really thought with the area being called the abyss and the fact that before you use the dream nail on that black rock your reflection shows and the fact that after you acquire the void heart it makes your shade friendly is in reference to the quote if you gaze into the abyss the abyss will gaze back at you except in Hollow Knight rather then abyss consuming you in a negative way it’s the Knight learning to accept that half of him he sees himself for who he really is

i still believe this is one of the best written, most impactful and most tragic moments out of any game ever made. the rise of the music combined with your rise to the top of the abyss, the bodies falling all around you with the text describing the hollow knight - all culminating when you reach the top and see them both standing there. absolutely incredible storytelling and this cutscene is one of the many reasons that this game is an absolute, indominable masterpiece
This moment isn't that good. Nice music, but the meaning isn't that deep and it's tragedy is meh. It lacks in descriptiveness. It doesn't communicate well the actual context of the situation. For one, you'd have 0 idea that the one going with the pale king is the hollow knight, not ghost. Secondly you don't know if the vessels falling down are being thrown in, or failing to climb. You also don't know if they're dead or not already. Depending on the conclusion you reach, you'd see the pale king in a very very different light. It's a nice moment, but it doesn't tell you enough on its own to actually be tragic or "a work of art!" Moment. The music and the text are nice, adds weight to the moment compared to the usual Parkour you go through. But otherwise the moment doesn't pull any emotions out of me. Cool moment, but just that. Just cool, nothing more.
@@trevorveillette8415what? If you paid attention to the story and lore thus far you could easily extrapolate what’s going on. You know that the person going with the king is the hollow knight because 1. You are always controlling the ghost/knight 2. The hollow knight is the one that was chosen, so it has to be them. You can also determine that the vessels are falling due to their failure to climb. The entire climb up tells you that… and also the fact that we don’t see any vessels being thrown down.
@@LionSnobTBH you can get the basic plot which is that the pale king made a mindless vessel to contain “something” (you don’t actually really see it until the radiance fight, but seer does talk about her too) that zombifies people in dreams, but in the process had a lot of discarded attempts, without any video essays just by reading the signs and dialogue closely, but the other parts of the story can be pretty hard to get without using wiki or watching lore vids. At least imo that’s what I got and then I watched video essays after it. You know the little guy in the cutscene is the hollow knight because the pale king says it is
I’m so glad I’m not the only one, the way the music is off key and how the hardest charm in the game to get becomes the key to control the literal god of the abyss is chilling
Considering the screen is so dark during this scene, I like to think when the Pale King says "You are the hollow knight" and I see my reflection , he's doing a fourth wall break Pale King: You are the hollow knight. Me: Yeah, cool. *Suddenly remembered what that means* oh.... Not cool.
This is my theory about the 'hollowness' of the Knight and about the endings (obviously spoilers but if you haven't played the game then what are you even doing here lol), but hear me out - The Knight was never hollow to begin with, and was aware of it. Being one of the vessels that made it out of the Abyss by unknown means, it wandered out of Hallownest on PURPOSE, because when you wander out of it, YOU LOSE THE MIND PALE KING GRANTS, as per the hidden tablet in Howling Cliffs and the Quirrel comic. It was then called back by the Dreamers/The Hollow Knight back to Hallownest, as it was truly hollow now. - The Knight lost all memory, will, and mind by doing that, which MADE HIM HOLLOW, as Hornet stated multiple times "No mind, only strength" "Yours is the resilience born of two voids (the void, and the lack of mind/will)" "That crucial emptiness I do not share" and White Lady "But you are free of such blemishes." Which means that it could contain the Radiance forever, or at least significantly longer than The Hollow Knight. - Upon acquiring the Void Heart, The Knight, by dream nailing themselves, regaining all of the memories before leaving Hallownest, that including the flashback cutscene we see here, which now means it is not hollow anymore, regained its mind, as the Void Heart bends the Void to the bearer's *WILL* . At this point the Sealed Siblings ending would be the worst possible ending. - That 'crucial emptiness' is no longer needed. The Knight is now an aware being, made to hate the Radiance, as both the Pale King and the Void are enemies with her, and it can unite and bend the Void to aid it in consuming her. After The Knight weakens her enough, it unleashes its Shade onto her, and with the help of the other Shades and the Void in general, effectively rids the world of the Radiance. (Dream no More) (bonus, I guess) - The Embrace the Void ending is basically the same, except the Radiance is not fought inside the Hollow Knight's head in her weakened form, but instead is fought in her true form at the top of the Pantheon of Hallownest. Through the combat you ascend and by the time you've beaten the radiance, you ascend to becoming the Shade Lord and basically rip her apart. If you've come this far, I'm sorry for wasting your time.
Since a lot of people have written their own interpretations of this scene, I'd like to give it a shot too. The scene itself is pretty obvious, since it's quite literally a memory the Knight has after using the Dream Nail on it's own egg. The climb is, also, a literal event although, as some have pointed out, the Knight did not possess the Mantis Claws or the Monarch Wings, so it's climb was much more gruelling than what we go through and, more importantly, the Knight was only capable of barely grabbing onto the ledge. As for the Hollow Knight, as is obvious by the game itself, it was never truly hollow. It was capable of thought, and even seemed to love it's father dearly, although it did it's best to keep those thoughts suppressed, fearing it might lose it's father's love if it were found out that it wasn't truly hollow. Some people also seem to think that this cutscene allows the Knight to become hollow but that would be incorrect. It's not made hollow, it's made whole. The Knight, through remembering it's birth and rejection, understands what it was, what it's purpose and reason for existing was. This is represented by the Kingsoul becoming the Voidheart since it perfectly mirrors what the Vessels are. A union between the Pale King and the White Lady created children/ eggs, which is shown by the Kingsoul, which is also a representation of the union between the two. The Voidheart, similarly to the Vessels, is what happened to what was birthed of that union, infected by the Void. The Kingsoul gets tainted by the Void and becomes the Voidheart, in the same way the eggs became the Vessels upon being tainted by the Void. So yeah, the Kingsoul and it's transformation into the Voidheart are a representation of the Vessels.
@@TheGalaxyWings do some pogchamps moves to get 1 pale ore and the great slash because great slash and channeled nail can INSTAKILL primal aspids. So useful in kingdom’s edge.
In a way, the Void Heart is like a promise to the Siblings. Ghost's promise to confront and destroy the Radiance -- cut the head off the snake, to coin a phrase -- and avenge what happened to every one of their many, many siblings. (And quite possibly, it's a promise to the Void itself, finally offering the chance to come together as a single unit and destroy its ancient enemy for good.) For the millions who died failing to ascend from the Abyss. For Kin, who was Infected to a point that they only realized who they were fighting in their final moments. And for Hollow, the cursed, crown prince of Hallownest, doomed to suffer the full wrath of the Radiance and watch her wreak havoc on their kingdom all while they remained sealed and bound in *excruciating* pain, all alone.
I feel like there can be multiple explanations behind what might have gone through the Hollow Knight's thoughts in that moment, but in any case it really speaks to the fact it wasn't hollow, precisely because it had a moment to think. Maybe seeing the other vessel made them uncertain whether they were the true vessel. Maybe it made them want to save them. Either way, following the King proved more compelling than it all. Perhaps the Hollow Knight wanted to be chosen by the Pale King, perhaps it wanted to be the one to receive his attention, and eventually, his affection. And in the end, that's the crack that doomed the whole thing.
Honestly, this cutscene is by far my most favorite, because of the mood it sets. (WARNING, LONG RANT AHEAD) The screen fades into vision, all you can see is a sea of vessel corpses that were unfortunate enough to show any sort of emotion or thought In front of the Pale King, and have now suffered the consequence. Then suddenly, a flicker of motion on a pile of dead siblings, and then a tiny Knight emerges, slowly rising up from the pile. The Knight looks around, looking for a platform or a ledge in the pitch black trench that it has been cast into with only one intent: to get out of this hellhole as soon as possible. Vessel after vessel raining down from above, carelessly and mercilessly exiled into the cold, unforgiving void of the Abyss. The knight quickly spots a platform it can use to ascend, and without a second thought, leaps onto it, already searching for the next. The incredibly audible thud of the vessels coming to the end of their fall the most dominant sound, reaching every corner of the Abyss and drowning out the sound of the Knights footsteps and landings from platform to platform. The Knight struggling to keep balance the higher it gets, perilously swaying from one landing to the next, knowing that each one is the only thing between the Knight, and certain death. Gravity threatened to take a hold on the Knight, but it escaped it's clutches just in time. Careful to avoid spikes, the Knight continues to ascend higher and higher. The process felt like an eternity, but the Knight cared not. It would continue to climb until the end, or until it's limbs failed, and it would fall all the way back to where it started, but only not able to try again. After an agonizing amount of time, the Knight could just make out a light at the top of the Abyss, which took the Knight by surprise, considering the repetitive cycle of jumping on platforms it had ventured. Filled with renewed determination, the Knight continued to ascend. The Knight was almost there. It was almost over. The Knight finnaly reached the top, standing on a platform not too far away form the exit of the Abyss, which the Knight has only seen once before, when It crossed the entire length of the Abyss, only in the opposite direction. There the Knight saw the Pale King himself, along with another vessel the Knight did not recognise. The Knight knew that the vessel it was looking at was going to be the one vessel that the Pale King would choose to be the savior of all of Hallownest. Time seemed to slow. The Knight was preparing to leap that final gap between it, and freedom. It was now or never. All of the Knights efforts to escape this seemingly inescapable abyss all came down to this final moment. ... Then the Knight slipped. The sensation of slowed time seemed to increase tenfold. The Knight had missed the final leap that it would ever have to do to achieve freedom. This one failed jump has costed the Knights life, and it would now pass on, into the darkness... But then the Knight refused. It refused for the first time it had ever refused before. The Knight would not let it end, not now. With an enormous effort, the Knight barely managed to grasp the ledge of the platform that would lead the Knight out of the Abyss. Then, the Knight watched, so as to not be noticed by the Pale King and the other vessel. The Pale King looked just as the Knight had remembered him: a blinding light emitting from him as if he were a bright star from the sky that had descended down to earth. His cloak startlingly reflective and shiny, despite the endless darkness that surrounded them. The Pale King exchanged a glance with the vessel, and then slowly walked out of the entrance to the Abyss, His cloak shifting around him as he moved. The vessel seemed to hesitate for a moment, and then started to walk after the Pale King. The Knight found itself losing its grip on the ledge and, desperate to escape, tried to get the vessels attention, since the Pale King had left moments before. The vessel stoped, and turned around to look directly at the Knight. The vessel held it gaze for a few moments, and then turned away from the Knight, and walked after the Pale King. The Knight had felt stunned, and scared that the vessel had refused to help it up. A feeling of betrayal enveloped the Knight. Then the Knight found it could not hold on any longer, and it's grip loosed, casting to back down into the darkness it had attempted so desperately to escape. This was the end, and now there was nothing the Knight could do about it. The scene fades to black, and the only thing we can hear is silence. Then: "You shall seal the blinding light that plagues their dreams. You are the vessel. You are the Hollow Knight." All of that buildup and drama, with the Pale King speaking about the vessels, the Knight finally reaching the top only to be betrayed, and then the scene cuts to black and silence, and the Pale King finishes speaking about the vessels, mentioning the title of the game. Gives me the chills every time...
**heres how i think the knight is the king (the video down below explains much better than i do)** Once, there was a group of Moths, they worshipped a moth called the radiance, the radiance controlled it's people by hive minds, then a worm called the "wrym" came along and didn't like hive minds so he gave the bugs intelligence and they started worshipping the wrym instead. The bugs forgot about the radiance and the radiance slowly faded away. After this happened, the wrym became reborn as a king people worshipped the king...many years later. A bug saw a statue of the radiance and started dreaming about the radiance. This slowly made the radiance regain control and started the hive mind again. It grew bigger and bigger and made the crossroads Infected, The king experimented with the void and he came up with an idea to make bugs that were full of void. He needed a bug that was truly hollow and that didn't dream or sleep or think or anything like that so they could seal the radiance. There were many failures but there was still hope, he chose one of these bugs as a vessel to become the hollow knight, (which is the one that walks away and follows the king in the video) the king started developing feelings for the vessel which gave the radiance access to their minds, he knew that the vessel couldn't seal the radiance for any longer and there were no other good vessels so the king became desperate and made a choice and his last thoughts were **"no cost too great"** and became reborn as the knight he decides to fix his mistake and kill the radiance himself. (you used to be able to dream nail the hollow knight and the dialogue said "father...?" but they removed it, also if you go into the white palace all the people are bowing to you (this screams out the fact that you're the king) also if you dream nail grimm after defeating him he will say "dear wyrm..." i don't know if he still says that but for me it did...**this all comes together to prove that the knight is the king** so basically this isn't a story about a knight doing more than what he's supposed to do but it's actually a story about a king fixing his mistake in order to save his people....**(if i didn't explain correctly watch the video called "the knight unmasked" by game theory)** th-cam.com/video/gaFdVG503rw/w-d-xo.html
@@okok-ir8er Yeah I watched Game Theory already and while it does make sense, we'll have to see in Silksong, although I doubt the Knight will be there because in every single ending it either returned to the void, became the new vessel, or became part of the void entity.
@@okok-ir8er It makes sense, but the white palace servants were bowing to you because you had the King's Brand. And THK's dreamnail dialogue said that because they remember him. The dialogue was later deleted because THK most likely can't think. Plus, it wasn't the king who developed affection to THK, it was THK who developed affection to the king. Even if, the Knight left the abyss after it was sealed, then left Hallownest, so it's not really possible for PK to be the Knight, because the Knight was a failured vessel, not a new form of life. And the birthplace cutscene, you can see them almost *next to each other*, which is why I think they are separate beings. Edit: And the Pale King died shortly after the infection spread again, while the Knight was already a moving, alive (?) being way before that.
Something I've thought about, and there's a possibility I'm wrong and don't know enough lore to back it up, but I feel like the Hollow Knight not only has a will of its own, but an even stronger will than the average bug. Anyone else infected lost all control, yet the Hollow Knight had a strong enough will to break through and stab himself in order to save the day. Which must mean that the King had sent a (more than?) fully complex person to go seal the radiance away and basically die slowly with no way of asking for help, and little to no choice in the matter. And I think that's terrifying.
It is terrifying and messed up. I can only imagine how long the Hollow Knight had to bear through the agony of sealing the Radiance inside their own body. They have full sentience and yet the Pale King left them abandoned and to rot in the Black Egg. Just goes to show how flawed the Pale King's plan was, all because he was so desperate to cover up his mistakes.
Yes, absolutely. That's why even though we know from Birthplace that the Hollow Knight was never truly empty, the Path of Pain memory the king sealed away is so important! Because it means that at some point the king too realised that, and sealed the memory away out of shame.
I do think it's funny (and rather terrible) that the King didn't just continue looking for an actual hollow vessel after realizing that this one was flawed. He just went with his plan knowing how much this could hurt his own child.
Its a late comment and boring idea but I think the very thing that made the knight special wasn't how empty he was. It was his smarts to literally bring the abyss to the dream realm. Something that the pale king couldn't even imagine.
As one other comment stated I like to think that the reason Kingsoul changes to void heart is because at first the Knight is proud to carry the legacy of the King. After this scene thought he remembers the monster he really is and doesn't want to associate himself with his father anymore. It is really sad if you think about it

All of this has really made me think about the endings in a different light if you never get void heart and instead use king soul and fight the final boss you will only replace yourself as the vessel not defeat the radiance and the kingsoul charm without void heart is a representation of holding on to the desire of your "father" and not accepting your true nature thus you do as your father had wanted and become the vessel he desired to create however if you get void heart only then are you able to get to the root of your origins ans this is reflected in the boss fight because you need the void heart to get to the root of the radiance within the hollow knights mind
Everytime those messages appeared and the whisper sound appeared, I always thought it was the Pale King saying that and it made him seem really weird to me.

There is hidden dream nail dialogue inside the games code where the hollow knight is begging itself to stop thinking. Pretty damn depressing, if the king hadn't spent so much time with his son and created such a strong emotional bond the Hollow Knight might have been pure.
This is the tragic tale of the one fated to lose. You were so close. The Hollow Knight made it to the top first. He was chosen, while you were thrown back down, forgotten and abandoned. But he was tainted, he was filled with the desire to be loved by his father. That's why the radiance took over. The Hollow knight was never truly hollow. The Knight was so far away from the Abyss that he forgot his memories, his home, his purpose, and his siblings. Because of this, he isnt recognizable to his fellow siblings, all of them lashing out at him. When the Knight struck the The Awakened Dream Nail on his own egg, the only remainder of his past- instead of accessing the egg's memories itself, he enters his OWN mind and is finally able to recall everything that happened to him. He begins to remember how he and his fellow siblings were all cast to the Abyss's depths, deemed as failiures save for one, whose very mind and will were claimed to be flawless. The Knight's father, the same one who rejected him, leaves the Abyss with his son-turned-champion in tow. The Hollow Knight turns back toward the Abyss, hesitantly before following to catch up to His Majesty. The Abyss is sealed shut and the Knight falls to the bottom of the Abyss. With the Knight recalling these memories, he is made whole. Thus, the entirety of The Void is complete, his fellow siblings begin to recognize him as one of their own again, and the Kingsoul becomes draped in the Void's essence. This new charm will allow the Void to once again become what it always has been: an ancient, eldritch entity of complete darkness and emptiness whose powers are the only ones that can oppose the Radiance's blazing, blinding light. I knew about this game only this year, and man, I have to tell, those things that people telled about this game weren't wrong.. It's not just a game... it's fucking piece of art in all the ways, how could a Indie game be so deeply... the story, the way how it is written, the, I was ull into the game, with only my gameplay and spending hours trying to understand the lore, I finally understood it by myself, and man, I really cried by how it was made, mostly in this part, when I realized that the things that were falling were my siblings, and those quotes describing the hollow knight... with that theme on the background, i couldn't stop my tears... "No voice to cry suffering, you're the vessel... You're the Hollow Knight", after thousands of your sublings being murdered by your own father, and being the only one who really "work" its so damn painful... I might be exaggerating, but this game hits completely different, theres is not going to be any game that going to make me feel like this game did.. it's something that I couldn't describe, it's just wonderful

Before I got to this, the day before I read a fic where the game had ended and hollow, hornet, and ghost were safe but there was this one scene in the fic where ghost was crying in hollows arms begging hollow not to go because it remembered this memory... so when I opened birthplace in the game for the first time I was emotional as fuck
@@vf06-d1h the fact that in the animation where ghost fell in acid without isma's tear they panics, alone is enough to show that he has emotions, just heavily surpessed, of course that after their entire reason of existance is no longer existant they have no reason to hide their feelings.
I know that I'm like years late, but just pointing this out. Before the lnight obtains voidheart, the white lady said that we are free of blemishes. She doesn't say that after obtaining voidheart though. So I think the knight is canonically pure (pre-voidheart).
"No voice to cry suffering" And that ties back to the suffering, imperfect, infected knight screaming as the Radiance's infection breaks through his shell.
I wish the pale king had a bit more to do in the game but he’s pretty much just there for lore. No dream boss fight or anything, I’m personally disappointed.
Something I realized while listening to the song. It only plays 3 times, in chronological order This, Path of pain, THK boss phase 3,4. This is when the hollow knight ascends and looks back to see the knight behind him before following the king and sealing the knight in the void. The knight never got the kings hand in this he was left empty. The next was path of pain, the hollow knight shares a moment with the king after what I presume to be completely his trials (path of pain seems to be made to test the skills of the hollow knight at least that’s what I think). This goes on to cause the radiance to seep into its mind. The knight doesn’t get any affection after beating path of pain, he simply watches the hollow knight at the end. The last is when THK has been broken down he starts killing itself trying to get rid of the infection, spreading it everywhere. In phase 4 he can’t even swing his nail without falling, he’s fallen so far from grace. He was not truely hollow, but the knight was. The knight absorbs the radiance no problem, he hasn’t become attached to anything in the ending where he absorbs the radiance. The knight is the true hollow knight but was selected not to by a matter of moments. All the ruin could have been prevented so easily.

The pale kings plan was doomed to fail from the second it started that single glance back could be the downfall of hallownest maybe it was the hollow knights ambition to save the kingdom through its sacrife or maybe just maybe it was the affections the pale king showed him at the end of the path of pain the hollow knight must have not known whether to aknowledge the knight on one side if he did he would have been outed as non hollow therefore being casted in the abyss but if he didnt the guilt would get to him the meoment the hollow knight reached out of the abyss it was already over the kingdom would fall the only way was to exterminate the radiance embrace the void use its power to erase the light

The hidden emptiness of The Kingsoul was revealed (Voidheat) due to Ghost feeling negative emotion of seeing one of the darkest parts of the kingdom's history, this is the reason why Hornet wanted him to witness it to become powerful enough to kill the radiance.
I think this scene show just how special The Knight actually is. Even among the vessels. It was the number 2 candidate to become the Hollow Knight. Getting up there just after the The Hollow Knight did. It’s very talented. That’s why it escaped and survived even with the little experience it had before getting out of Hallownest. Unlike most of it’s siblings. It was one of the best from the beginning. So it’s not surprising that it’s capable of defeating everyone in Hallownest after it came back. The other vessels that died in Hallownest were probably much weaker than it.
Maybe the test is that the 1st one to get up has to defeat the others following after, then throw them back down with no remorse. This is to show that they are truly hollow.

To the Pale King's slight credit, I don't think he even realized the Knight was there. The Hollow Knight briefly glances over, but the Pale King's looking forward the entire time. I like to think, if the Pale King knew it was there, it would've taken the Knight in too. Given the Hollow Knight's fate, though, perhaps it's a blessing that he didn't notice.

Note that the Hollow Knight was never truly hollow. The fact that they even stopped to look back at the knight means that they had a mind to think.
Same thing with the Knight itself. This is why in the end there was no such thing as a "Hollow Knight," especially because of the fact that the king put his will inside of them, as revealed by the mask maker. The only way the Radiance could've been stopped is by outright banishing/killing her rather than keeping her inside of a vessel.

@@honor6200 Yes, but she could have been wrong. Especially because of the fact that the Knight can deny a trade meaning it has a mind to think. Also, before the Hollow Knight boss battle, Hornet says "Ghost of Hallownest, you possess the strength to enact an end of your choosing. Would you supplant our birth-cursed sibling, or would you transcend it?" The fact that the Knight has a choice to either seal the Radiance in itself or enter it's sibling's mind and outright destroy her while commanding the void also proves that it has a mind.
@@vf06-d1h yeah, that line always confused me. There are multiple instances of the knight breaking the rules of a hollow vessel but for some reason we're being told that it is a perfectly hollow vessel? It's just a bit confusing.
What's interesting about this cutscene is that it contains an anachronism. The Knight didn't have the Mantis Claw, the Mothwing Cloak or the Monarch's Wings at that point in time. I like to interpret this as the Knight revisiting a especially traumatic memory, not an actual representation of how it happened. The real climb out must have been much more difficult.

After all this is a memory, a dream. It probably has some changes here and there since the Knight's memories are messed from going through the wilderness, but team cherry wouldn't add this cutscene just to say: Oh yeah the knight imagined all of it.
There is a physical change to the representation of the souls of two gods due to the Knight finally understanding it's origin.

What really makes me feel sad is the line "No voice to cry suffering."..... It's like the king actively removed his children's ability to speak so that he wouldn't have to hear them cry out in pain as he murdered most of them and allowed one of them to live so that it could live in eternal torment as a prison because he felt like that one was the one he managed to fully destroy...
Great way to put it, although I think it's simply because the vessels could be "hollow" so the Radiance won't be able to influence them, which in the end failed because none of the vessels could be truly hollow.

I felt this exact thought, but as early as entering city of tears. Both city of tears and home from undertale made me understood why undertale and HK were such great games.
Just want to point out something: neither the Pure Vessel nor the Knight are truly hollow. As many pointed out with the former, they wouldn’t of looked back otherwise. With the latter it’s a bunch of little things. Sitting with Quirrel at the lake to start with. It doesn’t even matter if you chose not to, the Knight considered it. They considered joining a bug in companionship over fulfilled duty, instead of dismissing him as no longer relevant.

The transformation of Kingsoul always made me thing or feel as if the Knight's memories of everything coming together including the past must've made it sad to the point that they completely shut down to completely hollow themselves out. Clenching to the charm as you see this man who's loved by everyone and how the world of Hallownest, just...let you fall to your assumed death. That'd throw me over the edge and empty out whatever emotions I had left to focus.

What I love is that in this scene the Knight isn't supposed to have any upgrade not even his sword. That's why he's holding on that edge in the edge since without monarch wings or spade cloak that jump is impossible.

The abyss seriously gives me the creeps. Dumbass me was surprised when the abyss was actually an abyss and every time I went there, shade cloak, abyss shriek and void heart was memorable because of the crazy atmosphere.
Same with me. I had no idea what was down at the Abyss at first, and those void pools that lash out at you with tentacles out of nowhere scared me.
The Abyss is one of the most atmospheric points in the game! The slow reveal of a few vessel skulls on a few platforms gives this sinking feeling similar to the Broken Vessel and seeing some in Nosk’s lair. It just increases as you go further and further down. Then you suddenly hit the bottom much more quickly than expected, yet it feels like it was the longest trek you’ve made. And all you see are the skulls of more vessels than you ever hope to count. They don’t cover the floor, they ARE the floor. You walk across their empty shells hearing them shift and clack and splinter. Then a familiar black shape floats up from the corpses, one you’ve seen your whole journey. Their different shapes don’t matter, they’re exactly like you. They take a swipe at you, you’re forced to retaliate, you see them sink back into the mass of corpses, then after a moment to breathe, you check the Hunter’s Journal: *Sibling.*
These are all your siblings. Their corpses, their restless shades, and there are thousands of them. Thousands upon thousands of your broken kin shrewn across the Abyss. *Why?*
A heaviness sinks over you as remember the tablet before the entrance of this place.
*“Our Pure Vessel has ascended. Beyond this point lies only the refuse and regret of it’s creation. We shall enter that place no longer.”*

Honestly I was more so intrigued and found it to be the coolest place out from the whole game cause I thought it couldnt get deeper down but it did and when I figured that out I was oddly fascinated by it not to mention they really nailed the old ancient look for it which just made it more fascinating
This scene not only proves the hollowness of the knight, but also simultaniously shows the flaws in the hollow knight. The hollow knight looks back and stares at the knight and his birthplace for a second, before following the pale king. This memory is needed to be remembered and dealt with as it is the only thing stopping the knight from being truly hollow, now that he has came to terms with the most tragic part of his existence.
Edit: also the whole ‘you are the vessel. You are the hollow knight’ bit is amazing. The screen going black, the music stopping, and those words.. just damn there is something so great about it.

I don't think Hollow means having literally no mind. Rather, it means that having no mind beyond what's necessary for what it was built for. It cannot think beyond it's purpose if it's truly hollow. The Hollow Knight was meant to be good for combat hence vessels are capable of learning the nail arts.
The Hollow Knight however was not meant to love it's father. Hence it wasn't truly hollow.
Not sure if our Knight itself is hollow either, as it has shown a lot of moments of subtle compassion that cannot be explained by it being beneficial to it's goal. Like sitting with Quirrel at the Blue Lake's shore, etc
I personally don’t think the Knight is hollow.
I think the hollow knight wasn't turning his back maliciously, because if he had helped him, the pale king would have turned around and saw that one survived, and would have killed the main character, whereas not helping him would keep him alive.
That could possibly be the reason why, and would further prove that The Hollow Knight wasn't hollow since it has a mind to think if that was its reason for not helping The Knight.
could also have been for survival; the HK helping the knight would be its own will, and as a ''pure vessel'' he is not supposed to really have that. if he had helped, he would've been thrown back into the void to rot among his siblings, because it would be clear he was defective as well.

Golems are "hollow" but can move and make actions that are commanded.
If we see it a certain way, all of the vessels could technically be some type of golem. Golems can move and do a variety of things, maybe not make choices, yeah, but they would still fit the "Can move and make choices but are still hollow and lack a mind of their own". We can count on this on a creature made of purely void. That would be the collector, who seems to fit a bit more the Golem theory, same with the Kingsmolds. By definition, all of them shoudl be "Hollow" as they are only made of void.
We can also say they are zombies, since in mythology zombies were just reanimated corpses that, of course, lacked a mind of their own and could only do very simple things. If applied to hollow knight that would be something like Focusing soul or using a sword for starters.
Focusing soul it's important as it's the only way we have seen in which is possible to contain the Radiance. If a vessel can't do that then you can't really shove all the infection inside it
Little did the Hollow Knight know, but they'd be better off falling back down into the pit below. There was some sick irony in leaving one of their siblings to die, only to be subjected to a fate worse than death in the end.

I’m not sure if this is the interpretation that anyone else had but I really thought with the area being called the abyss and the fact that before you use the dream nail on that black rock your reflection shows and the fact that after you acquire the void heart it makes your shade friendly is in reference to the quote if you gaze into the abyss the abyss will gaze back at you except in Hollow Knight rather then abyss consuming you in a negative way it’s the Knight learning to accept that half of him he sees himself for who he really is

i still believe this is one of the best written, most impactful and most tragic moments out of any game ever made. the rise of the music combined with your rise to the top of the abyss, the bodies falling all around you with the text describing the hollow knight - all culminating when you reach the top and see them both standing there. absolutely incredible storytelling and this cutscene is one of the many reasons that this game is an absolute, indominable masterpiece
This moment isn't that good. Nice music, but the meaning isn't that deep and it's tragedy is meh.
It lacks in descriptiveness. It doesn't communicate well the actual context of the situation.
For one, you'd have 0 idea that the one going with the pale king is the hollow knight, not ghost.
Secondly you don't know if the vessels falling down are being thrown in, or failing to climb. You also don't know if they're dead or not already.
Depending on the conclusion you reach, you'd see the pale king in a very very different light.
It's a nice moment, but it doesn't tell you enough on its own to actually be tragic or "a work of art!" Moment. The music and the text are nice, adds weight to the moment compared to the usual Parkour you go through. But otherwise the moment doesn't pull any emotions out of me.

You know that the person going with the king is the hollow knight because 1. You are always controlling the ghost/knight 2. The hollow knight is the one that was chosen, so it has to be them.
You can also determine that the vessels are falling due to their failure to climb. The entire climb up tells you that… and also the fact that we don’t see any vessels being thrown down.

@@LionSnobTBH you can get the basic plot which is that the pale king made a mindless vessel to contain “something” (you don’t actually really see it until the radiance fight, but seer does talk about her too) that zombifies people in dreams, but in the process had a lot of discarded attempts, without any video essays just by reading the signs and dialogue closely, but the other parts of the story can be pretty hard to get without using wiki or watching lore vids. At least imo that’s what I got and then I watched video essays after it.

This is my theory about the 'hollowness' of the Knight and about the endings (obviously spoilers but if you haven't played the game then what are you even doing here lol), but hear me out
- The Knight was never hollow to begin with, and was aware of it. Being one of the vessels that made it out of the Abyss by unknown means, it wandered out of Hallownest on PURPOSE, because when you wander out of it, YOU LOSE THE MIND PALE KING GRANTS, as per the hidden tablet in Howling Cliffs and the Quirrel comic. It was then called back by the Dreamers/The Hollow Knight back to Hallownest, as it was truly hollow now.
- The Knight lost all memory, will, and mind by doing that, which MADE HIM HOLLOW, as Hornet stated multiple times "No mind, only strength" "Yours is the resilience born of two voids (the void, and the lack of mind/will)" "That crucial emptiness I do not share" and White Lady "But you are free of such blemishes." Which means that it could contain the Radiance forever, or at least significantly longer than The Hollow Knight.
- Upon acquiring the Void Heart, The Knight, by dream nailing themselves, regaining all of the memories before leaving Hallownest, that including the flashback cutscene we see here, which now means it is not hollow anymore, regained its mind, as the Void Heart bends the Void to the bearer's *WILL* . At this point the Sealed Siblings ending would be the worst possible ending.
- That 'crucial emptiness' is no longer needed. The Knight is now an aware being, made to hate the Radiance, as both the Pale King and the Void are enemies with her, and it can unite and bend the Void to aid it in consuming her. After The Knight weakens her enough, it unleashes its Shade onto her, and with the help of the other Shades and the Void in general, effectively rids the world of the Radiance. (Dream no More)

- The Embrace the Void ending is basically the same, except the Radiance is not fought inside the Hollow Knight's head in her weakened form, but instead is fought in her true form at the top of the Pantheon of Hallownest. Through the combat you ascend and by the time you've beaten the radiance, you ascend to becoming the Shade Lord and basically rip her apart.

Since a lot of people have written their own interpretations of this scene, I'd like to give it a shot too.
The scene itself is pretty obvious, since it's quite literally a memory the Knight has after using the Dream Nail on it's own egg. The climb is, also, a literal event although, as some have pointed out, the Knight did not possess the Mantis Claws or the Monarch Wings, so it's climb was much more gruelling than what we go through and, more importantly, the Knight was only capable of barely grabbing onto the ledge.
As for the Hollow Knight, as is obvious by the game itself, it was never truly hollow. It was capable of thought, and even seemed to love it's father dearly, although it did it's best to keep those thoughts suppressed, fearing it might lose it's father's love if it were found out that it wasn't truly hollow.
Some people also seem to think that this cutscene allows the Knight to become hollow but that would be incorrect. It's not made hollow, it's made whole. The Knight, through remembering it's birth and rejection, understands what it was, what it's purpose and reason for existing was. This is represented by the Kingsoul becoming the Voidheart since it perfectly mirrors what the Vessels are. A union between the Pale King and the White Lady created children/ eggs, which is shown by the Kingsoul, which is also a representation of the union between the two. The Voidheart, similarly to the Vessels, is what happened to what was birthed of that union, infected by the Void. The Kingsoul gets tainted by the Void and becomes the Voidheart, in the same way the eggs became the Vessels upon being tainted by the Void.
So yeah, the Kingsoul and it's transformation into the Voidheart are a representation of the Vessels.

In a way, the Void Heart is like a promise to the Siblings. Ghost's promise to confront and destroy the Radiance -- cut the head off the snake, to coin a phrase -- and avenge what happened to every one of their many, many siblings. (And quite possibly, it's a promise to the Void itself, finally offering the chance to come together as a single unit and destroy its ancient enemy for good.)
For the millions who died failing to ascend from the Abyss. For Kin, who was Infected to a point that they only realized who they were fighting in their final moments. And for Hollow, the cursed, crown prince of Hallownest, doomed to suffer the full wrath of the Radiance and watch her wreak havoc on their kingdom all while they remained sealed and bound in *excruciating* pain, all alone.
Absolutely. By obtaining VOID Heart, Ghost ensured closure and revenge.
I feel like there can be multiple explanations behind what might have gone through the Hollow Knight's thoughts in that moment, but in any case it really speaks to the fact it wasn't hollow, precisely because it had a moment to think. Maybe seeing the other vessel made them uncertain whether they were the true vessel. Maybe it made them want to save them. Either way, following the King proved more compelling than it all. Perhaps the Hollow Knight wanted to be chosen by the Pale King, perhaps it wanted to be the one to receive his attention, and eventually, his affection. And in the end, that's the crack that doomed the whole thing.

Honestly, this cutscene is by far my most favorite, because of the mood it sets. (WARNING, LONG RANT AHEAD)
The screen fades into vision, all you can see is a sea of vessel corpses that were unfortunate enough to show any sort of emotion or thought In front of the Pale King, and have now suffered the consequence. Then suddenly, a flicker of motion on a pile of dead siblings, and then a tiny Knight emerges, slowly rising up from the pile. The Knight looks around, looking for a platform or a ledge in the pitch black trench that it has been cast into with only one intent: to get out of this hellhole as soon as possible. Vessel after vessel raining down from above, carelessly and mercilessly exiled into the cold, unforgiving void of the Abyss. The knight quickly spots a platform it can use to ascend, and without a second thought, leaps onto it, already searching for the next. The incredibly audible thud of the vessels coming to the end of their fall the most dominant sound, reaching every corner of the Abyss and drowning out the sound of the Knights footsteps and landings from platform to platform. The Knight struggling to keep balance the higher it gets, perilously swaying from one landing to the next, knowing that each one is the only thing between the Knight, and certain death. Gravity threatened to take a hold on the Knight, but it escaped it's clutches just in time. Careful to avoid spikes, the Knight continues to ascend higher and higher. The process felt like an eternity, but the Knight cared not. It would continue to climb until the end, or until it's limbs failed, and it would fall all the way back to where it started, but only not able to try again. After an agonizing amount of time, the Knight could just make out a light at the top of the Abyss, which took the Knight by surprise, considering the repetitive cycle of jumping on platforms it had ventured. Filled with renewed determination, the Knight continued to ascend. The Knight was almost there. It was almost over. The Knight finnaly reached the top, standing on a platform not too far away form the exit of the Abyss, which the Knight has only seen once before, when It crossed the entire length of the Abyss, only in the opposite direction. There the Knight saw the Pale King himself, along with another vessel the Knight did not recognise. The Knight knew that the vessel it was looking at was going to be the one vessel that the Pale King would choose to be the savior of all of Hallownest. Time seemed to slow. The Knight was preparing to leap that final gap between it, and freedom. It was now or never. All of the Knights efforts to escape this seemingly inescapable abyss all came down to this final moment.
...
Then the Knight slipped.
The sensation of slowed time seemed to increase tenfold. The Knight had missed the final leap that it would ever have to do to achieve freedom. This one failed jump has costed the Knights life, and it would now pass on, into the darkness...
But then the Knight refused. It refused for the first time it had ever refused before. The Knight would not let it end, not now. With an enormous effort, the Knight barely managed to grasp the ledge of the platform that would lead the Knight out of the Abyss. Then, the Knight watched, so as to not be noticed by the Pale King and the other vessel. The Pale King looked just as the Knight had remembered him: a blinding light emitting from him as if he were a bright star from the sky that had descended down to earth. His cloak startlingly reflective and shiny, despite the endless darkness that surrounded them. The Pale King exchanged a glance with the vessel, and then slowly walked out of the entrance to the Abyss, His cloak shifting around him as he moved. The vessel seemed to hesitate for a moment, and then started to walk after the Pale King. The Knight found itself losing its grip on the ledge and, desperate to escape, tried to get the vessels attention, since the Pale King had left moments before. The vessel stoped, and turned around to look directly at the Knight. The vessel held it gaze for a few moments, and then turned away from the Knight, and walked after the Pale King. The Knight had felt stunned, and scared that the vessel had refused to help it up. A feeling of betrayal enveloped the Knight. Then the Knight found it could not hold on any longer, and it's grip loosed, casting to back down into the darkness it had attempted so desperately to escape. This was the end, and now there was nothing the Knight could do about it. The scene fades to black, and the only thing we can hear is silence. Then:
"You shall seal the blinding light that plagues their dreams. You are the vessel. You are the Hollow Knight."
All of that buildup and drama, with the Pale King speaking about the vessels, the Knight finally reaching the top only to be betrayed, and then the scene cuts to black and silence, and the Pale King finishes speaking about the vessels, mentioning the title of the game. Gives me the chills every time...
Amazing narration! So much emotion in one scene that sets up our tragic story of the Knight and the Hollow Knight.
**heres how i think the knight is the king (the video down below explains much better than i do)** Once, there was a group of Moths, they worshipped a moth called the radiance, the radiance controlled it's people by hive minds, then a worm called the "wrym" came along and didn't like hive minds so he gave the bugs intelligence and they started worshipping the wrym instead. The bugs forgot about the radiance and the radiance slowly faded away. After this happened, the wrym became reborn as a king people worshipped the king...many years later. A bug saw a statue of the radiance and started dreaming about the radiance. This slowly made the radiance regain control and started the hive mind again. It grew bigger and bigger and made the crossroads Infected, The king experimented with the void and he came up with an idea to make bugs that were full of void. He needed a bug that was truly hollow and that didn't dream or sleep or think or anything like that so they could seal the radiance. There were many failures but there was still hope, he chose one of these bugs as a vessel to become the hollow knight, (which is the one that walks away and follows the king in the video) the king started developing feelings for the vessel which gave the radiance access to their minds, he knew that the vessel couldn't seal the radiance for any longer and there were no other good vessels so the king became desperate and made a choice and his last thoughts were **"no cost too great"** and became reborn as the knight he decides to fix his mistake and kill the radiance himself. (you used to be able to dream nail the hollow knight and the dialogue said "father...?" but they removed it, also if you go into the white palace all the people are bowing to you (this screams out the fact that you're the king) also if you dream nail grimm after defeating him he will say "dear wyrm..." i don't know if he still says that but for me it did...**this all comes together to prove that the knight is the king** so basically this isn't a story about a knight doing more than what he's supposed to do but it's actually a story about a king fixing his mistake in order to save his people....**(if i didn't explain correctly watch the video called "the knight unmasked" by game theory)** th-cam.com/video/gaFdVG503rw/w-d-xo.html

And THK's dreamnail dialogue said that because they remember him. The dialogue was later deleted because THK most likely can't think.
Plus, it wasn't the king who developed affection to THK, it was THK who developed affection to the king.
Even if, the Knight left the abyss after it was sealed, then left Hallownest, so it's not really possible for PK to be the Knight, because the Knight was a failured vessel, not a new form of life.
And the birthplace cutscene, you can see them almost *next to each other*, which is why I think they are separate beings.
Edit: And the Pale King died shortly after the infection spread again, while the Knight was already a moving, alive (?) being way before that.

It's too bad they had to go through endless torment when they were sealed in the Black Egg.
Something I've thought about, and there's a possibility I'm wrong and don't know enough lore to back it up, but I feel like the Hollow Knight not only has a will of its own, but an even stronger will than the average bug. Anyone else infected lost all control, yet the Hollow Knight had a strong enough will to break through and stab himself in order to save the day. Which must mean that the King had sent a (more than?) fully complex person to go seal the radiance away and basically die slowly with no way of asking for help, and little to no choice in the matter. And I think that's terrifying.
It is terrifying and messed up. I can only imagine how long the Hollow Knight had to bear through the agony of sealing the Radiance inside their own body. They have full sentience and yet the Pale King left them abandoned and to rot in the Black Egg. Just goes to show how flawed the Pale King's plan was, all because he was so desperate to cover up his mistakes.
Yes, absolutely. That's why even though we know from Birthplace that the Hollow Knight was never truly empty, the Path of Pain memory the king sealed away is so important! Because it means that at some point the king too realised that, and sealed the memory away out of shame.
I do think it's funny (and rather terrible) that the King didn't just continue looking for an actual hollow vessel after realizing that this one was flawed. He just went with his plan knowing how much this could hurt his own child.

Its a late comment and boring idea but I think the very thing that made the knight special wasn't how empty he was. It was his smarts to literally bring the abyss to the dream realm. Something that the pale king couldn't even imagine.
As one other comment stated I like to think that the reason Kingsoul changes to void heart is because at first the Knight is proud to carry the legacy of the King. After this scene thought he remembers the monster he really is and doesn't want to associate himself with his father anymore. It is really sad if you think about it

All of this has really made me think about the endings in a different light if you never get void heart and instead use king soul and fight the final boss you will only replace yourself as the vessel not defeat the radiance and the kingsoul charm without void heart is a representation of holding on to the desire of your "father" and not accepting your true nature thus you do as your father had wanted and become the vessel he desired to create however if you get void heart only then are you able to get to the root of your origins ans this is reflected in the boss fight because you need the void heart to get to the root of the radiance within the hollow knights mind

There is hidden dream nail dialogue inside the games code where the hollow knight is begging itself to stop thinking. Pretty damn depressing, if the king hadn't spent so much time with his son and created such a strong emotional bond the Hollow Knight might have been pure.

Can I just say, this is the most satisfying collection theme of the game.
This is the tragic tale of the one fated to lose. You were so close. The Hollow Knight made it to the top first. He was chosen, while you were thrown back down, forgotten and abandoned. But he was tainted, he was filled with the desire to be loved by his father. That's why the radiance took over. The Hollow knight was never truly hollow. Whenever I see him turn his back on the knight, clinging for dear life, for an escape, I think of that head nod as him saying "No, this love is mine, and mine alone. I won't share it with you" Sorry for being so dramatic. this was the vibe I got off the music and then sentances and the cutscene

The Knight was so far away from the Abyss that he forgot his memories, his home, his purpose, and his siblings. Because of this, he isnt recognizable to his fellow siblings, all of them lashing out at him. When the Knight struck the The Awakened Dream Nail on his own egg, the only remainder of his past- instead of accessing the egg's memories itself, he enters his OWN mind and is finally able to recall everything that happened to him. He begins to remember how he and his fellow siblings were all cast to the Abyss's depths, deemed as failiures save for one, whose very mind and will were claimed to be flawless. The Knight's father, the same one who rejected him, leaves the Abyss with his son-turned-champion in tow. The Hollow Knight turns back toward the Abyss, hesitantly before following to catch up to His Majesty. The Abyss is sealed shut and the Knight falls to the bottom of the Abyss. With the Knight recalling these memories, he is made whole. Thus, the entirety of The Void is complete, his fellow siblings begin to recognize him as one of their own again, and the Kingsoul becomes draped in the Void's essence. I knew about this game only this year, and man, I have to tell, those things that people telled about this game weren't wrong.. It's not just a game... it's fucking piece of art in all the ways, how could a Indie game be so deeply... the story, the way how it is written, the, I was ull into the game, with only my gameplay and spending hours trying to understand the lore, I finally understood it by myself, and man, I really cried by how it was made, mostly in this part, when I realized that the things that were falling were my siblings, and those quotes describing the hollow knight... with that theme on the background, i couldn't stop my tears... "No voice to cry suffering, you're the vessel... You're the Hollow Knight", after thousands of your sublings being murdered by your own father, and being the only one who really "work" its so damn painful... I might be exaggerating, but this game hits completely different, theres is not going to be any game that going to make me feel like this game did.. it's something that I couldn't describe, it's just wonderful

Before I got to this, the day before I read a fic where the game had ended and hollow, hornet, and ghost were safe but there was this one scene in the fic where ghost was crying in hollows arms begging hollow not to go because it remembered this memory... so when I opened birthplace in the game for the first time I was emotional as fuck
That is indeed a depressing scene to imagine, although it would be quite unusual to see the Knight cry due to how emotionless they seem.
@@vf06-d1h the fact that in the animation where ghost fell in acid without isma's tear they panics, alone is enough to show that he has emotions, just heavily surpessed, of course that after their entire reason of existance is no longer existant they have no reason to hide their feelings.
This part is peak fiction.
I know that I'm like years late, but just pointing this out. Before the lnight obtains voidheart, the white lady said that we are free of blemishes. She doesn't say that after obtaining voidheart though. So I think the knight is canonically pure (pre-voidheart).

And that ties back to the suffering, imperfect, infected knight screaming as the Radiance's infection breaks through his shell.
I was so surprised when I dream nailed the egg and the Knight just slept from the middle of nowhere
I wish the pale king had a bit more to do in the game but he’s pretty much just there for lore. No dream boss fight or anything, I’m personally disappointed.

Something I realized while listening to the song.
It only plays 3 times, in chronological order
This,
Path of pain,
THK boss phase 3,4.
This is when the hollow knight ascends and looks back to see the knight behind him before following the king and sealing the knight in the void.
The knight never got the kings hand in this he was left empty.
The next was path of pain, the hollow knight shares a moment with the king after what I presume to be completely his trials (path of pain seems to be made to test the skills of the hollow knight at least that’s what I think). This goes on to cause the radiance to seep into its mind.
The knight doesn’t get any affection after beating path of pain, he simply watches the hollow knight at the end.
The last is when THK has been broken down he starts killing itself trying to get rid of the infection, spreading it everywhere. In phase 4 he can’t even swing his nail without falling, he’s fallen so far from grace. He was not truely hollow, but the knight was. The knight absorbs the radiance no problem, he hasn’t become attached to anything in the ending where he absorbs the radiance.
The knight is the true hollow knight but was selected not to by a matter of moments. All the ruin could have been prevented so easily.

Void heart doesn't take up any notches it is forever equipped to you but it doesn't take up a single notch it's either you're being a joker with this comment or this is true if it is true that is a wait that's illegal moment

Legit the best part of the game
The pale kings plan was doomed to fail from the second it started that single glance back could be the downfall of hallownest maybe it was the hollow knights ambition to save the kingdom through its sacrife or maybe just maybe it was the affections the pale king showed him at the end of the path of pain the hollow knight must have not known whether to aknowledge the knight on one side if he did he would have been outed as non hollow therefore being casted in the abyss but if he didnt the guilt would get to him the meoment the hollow knight reached out of the abyss it was already over the kingdom would fall the only way was to exterminate the radiance embrace the void use its power to erase the light

The hidden emptiness of The Kingsoul was revealed (Voidheat) due to Ghost feeling negative emotion of seeing one of the darkest parts of the kingdom's history, this is the reason why Hornet wanted him to witness it to become powerful enough to kill the radiance.
I think this scene show just how special The Knight actually is. Even among the vessels.
It was the number 2 candidate to become the Hollow Knight. Getting up there just after the The Hollow Knight did. It’s very talented.
That’s why it escaped and survived even with the little experience it had before getting out of Hallownest. Unlike most of it’s siblings. It was one of the best from the beginning.
So it’s not surprising that it’s capable of defeating everyone in Hallownest after it came back.
The other vessels that died in Hallownest were probably much weaker than it.
Honestly onr of the things im wishing from silk song are moments like this.
Maybe the test is that the 1st one to get up has to defeat the others following after, then throw them back down with no remorse.
This is to show that they are truly hollow.
I honestly think that was the case, especially since countless vessels are left down in the Abyss.
Watching this scene after dying a lot of times (thanks Pale King for those saws by the way, go to abyss) this scene was worth it
the playable cutscene aspect is great

To the Pale King's slight credit, I don't think he even realized the Knight was there. The Hollow Knight briefly glances over, but the Pale King's looking forward the entire time. I like to think, if the Pale King knew it was there, it would've taken the Knight in too. Given the Hollow Knight's fate, though, perhaps it's a blessing that he didn't notice.
