I was one of the welder/fabricators that helped Wes on this project. He was an extraordinary guy to work for and with. He expected the best out of everyone and was going to get it one way or the other or you were going to hit the road. Genius and high energy and a very no nonsense kind of guy. Meeting the deadline for the show meant long days bleeding into nights during the hottest months of Mesa Arizona's summer. Seeing this again brings back memories both good and stressful.
I'll take independent suspension any day of the week. We have a Wrangler and love my jeep. I used to desert race in modified open wheel race car with independent suspension front and back and you can fly through the desert. My jeep we just cruise along watching out all the way on rough trails.
Damn, this is AWESOME! Not everyone wants to rock crawl, and I imagine this kind of setup could see some benefit for the Jeeps used by United States Special Forces.
great design but.... not a traditional Jeep. Axles and diffs are the heart of jeeps. But this design is great for stability. No speed wabble or brake chatter... just very expensive solution too a problem. Wondering it the Arms are cast Aluminium?? How much weight savings compared to a solid steel axle??
Good looking product but all it is, is a long travel suspension on a Jeep, the guy acted like he reinvented the wheel, all he did was take one application and add it to a vehicle that normally doesn't have it. A arms, coil spring, spindle and hub, the basis for long travel
In the 90s they build fis suspended comp crawlers ,they cant compete with the straight axel Crawlers and break more parts. In the kOH the leading racers fitted with ifs but have a solid rear.Nothing beats a independant suspension at speed ,and nothing beats straight axels in the rocks because this fact they mixed the different suspension i think. If Jeep fit the Wrangler series with straight axels also in future who cares what the aftermarket sells. What is missing? A entry level real Jeep (straight axels) for a budget like the first Wrangler YJ/TJ with non electronic gimmicks, but possibel to crawl the Rubicon like the old Willys Jeep can doo .
Amanda doesn't make these jeeps. They paid my employer at the time to build it as an advertising tool. Great company and product, Amanda, they make very good and innovative D ring hooks for off-road vehicles.
Independent suspension will win. No doubt. Solid axle sticks around because of 1 or two attributes while the independent suspension has far better attributes and more importantly, has a MUCH stronger business case.
I think a company called REX beat this to the market, but even then I dont think anyone got this. I wish they made a factory jeep or vehicle like this. Fully Independent with suspension travel is the way to go!
I believe this is the way of the future.. I can see ram and jeep taking this design from jeeps and midsize up to 5500 models.. here's the whole thing.. only thing heavy you put on front of truck is a bull bar winch or a snow plow being the heaviest.. and plows are on for the max maybe a week in some areas.. it would ride nice and be hd.. the GMC/ chevy hd holds weight very well.. eventually sfa will be a thing of the past..
All of the benefits of independent suspension minus the one down side (typically less suspension travel than a solid axle). Benefits: 1. Better contact patch / better traction 2. less or non existent bump steer 3. Better handling 4. Better ride 5. You don't have traction loss on the left when hitting a bump on the right and vice versa. You Do have that problem with solid axle . 6. The shocks will work better and will run cooler. The lower unsprung weight will reduce shock temperature and shock fatigue. 7. No torque lifting. The power going to the wheels will not twist the axle and lift a wheel. The problem doesn't exist with independent suspension. Dozens and dozens of problems are solved. Everyone talks about the flex advantage. Yes. Typically you get one advantage over independent suspension but you lose 15 advantages... too many to name.
how does it handle? One year on and these parts aren't listed on their website. I suspect the depth of welding for this one as well as the extensive modifications for the fore and rear frames was the hold-up. I would take that challenge if the performance were acceptable... So, how does it drive? oh, I did look up the patent ( patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/search-bool.html ), but maybe it is in one of their names and not Amanda Products or Deshler Group (who has two pattents for couplers.. but not this item... Amanda Products is part of Deshler Group. Based in the Detroit area
God please no! leave the Jeeps alone! it's the only piece of Automotive Simplicity we have left. I'm all for IRS in a car. when it comes to Jeep though... solid axle for life
My KK has IFS. Not as advanced as the IFS in this video, but IFS nonetheless. I can and do wheel with the solid axle JK's all day long. IFS and eventually FIS (Fully Independent Suspension) just like on the Baja trucks is the future of Jeep. It''s GOING to happen, so get used to the idea, and start studying up.
Nah. Bit of natural selection is what we’re desperately in need of... Wanna keep ya digits, mind where u stick em.... Too many warning stickers these days. We have ‘sign-ahead signs’ at work now... I shit u not...
Actually the mutt m151 was produced by Ford, kaiser, and am general never by Willy-Overland's so technically it's not a Jeep mutt m151 it's a Ford mutt m151 a lot of people tend to make that mistake even I did at one point
Built it but have to guess the axle width at full droop? Odd. I like it though. Don’t sell out to manufactures! Get an investor to cover compliance costs and sell to aftermarket sector! That way EVERYONE can apply this to whichever vehicle they wish for whatever purpose. I despise that attitude. Like the bloke that works out a revolutionary new energy source, only to try patent it.... Just for that, I hope the Chinese copy this beat you to it. Then sell it as ‘off-road only’ aftermarket option.
Buzzfeed Right well if it did cost 4k extra we can subtract around 1,700 but if jeep offered it i would call it a jeep Cherokee instead of the wrangler.
15 yrs later ppl just fly not drive diff world diff terms type reality u can't factor into orginal 10yrs outlook & min sales 1st yr & 10yrs min & bonus is fixed.
I can see the low amount of axle plunge, but zero scrub is impossible. And saying that your geometry going into a bunch of negative camber at full droop is engineered for a good reason hahaha. Limit that shit back and get some more spread between those top arm pivots and that truck should mash
Bill hicks Mc gee So its impossible for the tire on that jeep to turn all the way left or right without touching anything. Im more then positive a company like this would make sure it can.
Zach Thornton I said nothing about the turning capabilities. Scrub is how much the wheels slide in and out (track width wise) as the suspension cycles through the bumps. It's a bitchn design, guys just trying to make light of some of the not so good points.
Amanda I Love U singing the song GOD wants this tech as ultimate ppl's jeep tech at least in front bc we r in NOW world any thing poss, anti gravity next big get. A licensing deal of 20k per Jeep or truck if running front & rear or $10k licensing terms if using just in front, seems fair. Tech patents & drugs r good for 20-25yrs of sales in market able to actual get it to market & sell it. Can't sell light bulb if no power in homes yet deal/example. The 1st yr bonus term can b whatever & min sales figures must b meet. Meaning u can't license the tech or drug unless u can guarantee x amount up front 1st yr 7 1st yr -10 yr sales of 1million-10million. That way u can't just sit on it tech & bidding war doesn't price tech out of the market. U can hve both tech for sale older cheaper tech vs new tech place for both. Some ppl will want full front & rear $10k&10k=$20k add & some Like Me think $10k just front is good enough. There is a decent competing tech front independent design NOW. For most serious Non Racing ppl old jeep good enough or just swing set set up is good enough but if u want best poss $10k front add to racing team no problem or even $20k to b cutting edge in tech.
+TheXJthatCould Well, I personally like to be able to drive my car on the road and not have the car wobble it self into another car... so there is that.
TheXJthatCould (note I am just going by what I hear constantly on the internet, considering I not even old enough to drive yet, although my dad did rent a Jeep for a time and that thing death rattled)
+TheXJthatCould I had a Wrangler, professionally installed lift kit would wobble all day long. I would take an IFS like this every day, which is a GREAT compromise between off road capability and on road stability.

I wish there was more info on these kind of suspension systems! I really like this!!
Damn, this is AWESOME! Not everyone wants to rock crawl, and I imagine this kind of setup could see some benefit for the Jeeps used by United States Special Forces.

the Army had IFS jeeps back in the 70s and 80s.
Good looking product but all it is, is a long travel suspension on a Jeep, the guy acted like he reinvented the wheel, all he did was take one application and add it to a vehicle that normally doesn't have it. A arms, coil spring, spindle and hub, the basis for long travel
Js S his claim to fame is the longer axle
Is there a video seeing a car driving with this or similar setup??!!
In the 90s they build fis suspended comp crawlers ,they cant compete with the straight axel Crawlers and break more parts. My liberty has independent axles and a front diff but still the solid rear axle
this company's products are insanely expensive... I bet they would charge $40,000 - $50,000 for this
Amanda doesn't make these jeeps.
Still i am looking for "portal axles with independent suspension"
Ok how about doing this with an already independent suspension Jeep? The Liberty
I think a company called REX beat this to the market, but even then I dont think anyone got this. I wish they made a factory jeep or vehicle like this. Fully Independent with suspension travel is the way to go!
Side-by-sides, HMMWVs, or Ridgelines? Subaru CUVs?
I believe this is the way of the future.. Interesting design very nice fab skills. However Ford had this very similar design on their Broncos from the 70's, 80's and 90's.
Jeep KJ come with independent on the front as std and solid on rear....
Ryank liberties are trash
My liberty has 22-24" of front travel on its IFS. But beforethe lift it still wheeled with many other jeeps and did great.
jeepncrowd
What lift did you go with?
Tim Klock
At least I can get a diesel Liberty.
whats the point? if you want independent suspension you have 100s of choices. you want solid axles you have what 3 choices?
if you really want me to be impressed how about a hybrid solid/ independent suspension.
Seems nice but what Im wondering is the actual handling in really harsh trails.
"Your the 1 the 1 front & rear for ME" Amanda I love you"
You know 1963 jeep Wagoneer with ifs from the Jeep factory!
Yo we need this. This would be way past cool
Is the carrier a one ton??? I see RCV cv axles in there.
I'll stick with my D60's
What would be the weight difference in a solid axle and you're independent suspension
All of the benefits of independent suspension minus the one down side (typically less suspension travel than a solid axle).
Benefits:
1. Better contact patch / better traction
2. less or non existent bump steer
3. Better handling

Dozens and dozens of problems are solved.
Everyone talks about the flex advantage. Yes. Typically you get one advantage over independent suspension but you lose 15 advantages... too many to name.
that is brilliant, just put independent suspension kit all around and a lm002 body work and you got a Lamborghini replica
how does it handle? One year on and these parts aren't listed on their website. I suspect the depth of welding for this one as well as the extensive modifications for the fore and rear frames was the hold-up. I would take that challenge if the performance were acceptable... So, how does it drive?

Wanted to do this with my 2011 grand cherokee...
Gee, it sure is a shame a company didn't start this technology back 30 some odd years ago. ......
Looks like more parts to break....
Just the cv axels
what's the wheel travel?
HOW DOES IT RIDE THO?
why arent actual off roaders built with indepedent suspensions front and rear. this seems like it has no weakness other than cost or complexity
God please no! leave the Jeeps alone! it's the only piece of Automotive Simplicity we have left. I'm all for IRS in a car. when it comes to Jeep though... solid axle for life

Who makes it?
Looks very expensive. Probably costs more that the vehicle itself.
I cringed the entire time hoping no one would get a finger smashed.
I was worried about that as well.
Nah. Bit of natural selection is what we’re desperately in need of...
Wanna keep ya digits, mind where u stick em....
Too many warning stickers these days. We have ‘sign-ahead signs’ at work now... I shit u not...
stop giving FCA ideas! next thing you know its gonna be based on the dodge neon and fitted with a CVT
steering looks a bit limited eh
The new grand Cherokees and Cherokees and patriots have independent
Dakota Jaegle Yes those Fiats ride great on the highway .
your patents are being stolen by Chinese on the background 😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Awesome
not the first jeep to have independent front suspension the m151 mutt is the first
lol good point. I spent many days riding those old death traps. I should have said first civilian jeeps I guess.
Actually the mutt m151 was produced by Ford, kaiser, and am general never by Willy-Overland's so technically it's not a Jeep mutt m151 it's a Ford mutt m151 a lot of people tend to make that mistake even I did at one point
Mother Nature ready she is not.

independent suspension is all well and good till a branch comes up and knocks one of the CV boots off.
jeeps are so overpriced for what they are. Imagine how much this upgrade would cost if the dealer offered it.
littlegoatgt first of all this would make a jeep cost 4 thousand dollars more atleast and jeeps aren't expensive your just broke.
Buzzfeed Right well if it did cost 4k extra we can subtract around 1,700 but if jeep offered it i would call it a jeep Cherokee instead of the wrangler.
Jeeps arent overpriced
Would you rather have the dealer offer it as an option or buy it from the manufacturer and pay to get it upgraded?
15 yrs later ppl just fly not drive diff world diff terms type reality u can't factor into orginal 10yrs outlook & min sales 1st yr & 10yrs min & bonus is fixed.
After 10yrs in market place U can say the terms must b diff bc sales r Y or new tech is stealing some of the sales.
Looking 😂for that 1 hitter quitter💰.no chump change
I can see the low amount of axle plunge, but zero scrub is impossible. And saying that your geometry going into a bunch of negative camber at full droop is engineered for a good reason hahaha. Limit that shit back and get some more spread between those top arm pivots and that truck should mash

Say Whaaaaa
It's the future

its independent not independant
+evo emperor lol...fixed it.
$$$ $$$ $$$
Nooooooooooooo!!!!!!!! Keep solid axles

What?
What kind of JERK puts independent suspension in a Jeep?
Now its a SUV ha ha!
boooooooo!!!! solid is FAR SUPERIOR for a crawler, independent sus is for street barbies!
+TheXJthatCould Well, I personally like to be able to drive my car on the road and not have the car wobble it self into another car... so there is that.
+Shotgun Mongol well you obviously never owned a jeep or you did a shitty ass job on the suspension
TheXJthatCould (note I am just going by what I hear constantly on the internet, considering I not even old enough to drive yet, although my dad did rent a Jeep for a time and that thing death rattled)
how is it better? Articulation seems to be the only advantage, and this ifs doesnt seem to be lacking!
+TheXJthatCould I had a Wrangler, professionally installed lift kit would wobble all day long. I would take an IFS like this every day, which is a GREAT compromise between off road capability and on road stability.
🤬👎
