PokeRogue is a unique rogue-lite experience set in the Pokemon universe. Unlike traditional Pokemon games, PokeRogue features procedurally generated worlds, meaning the map and encounters change with every playthrough. This injects a hefty dose of strategy and replayability, forcing you to adapt to ever-changing situations. Additionally, while it doesn't have permadeath like some Roguelike, PokeRogue offers a challenging experience that requires careful planning and resource management.
The Let's Try series is a way to preview / review games in order to get my first impressions through the first moments of gameplay.

Small but useful tip. You see that Pokeball icon on opponent health bars?
A bright one of those means you have THAT version of that Pokemon, be it in terms of Ability, Nature, or different form.
If that Pokeball icon is greyed out, that means that the Pokemon has something of that Pokemon that you DON'T have yet, like an ability. It's worth capturing these because it means you have more options when you select that Pokemon as a starter. And it also helps to identify when something has a Hidden Ability when you already have the normal abilities unlocked.
“What kind of move is bounce?”
The way I froze when he said that. Thankfully he looked it up before the super effective hit his servine
Reto, you just made my day by posting a part two of this. WOOOO. The more attention this gets, the better imo. And it's constantly being worked on.
Edit: By the way, the N and P at the end of move names means "Not Implemented" and "Partially Implemented". Also yes, Crobat is cracked out of its mind, especially with its egg moves.
Edit 2: Standard run goes to 200 so uh... long. And once you beat that, you unlock endless. The daily run gives you a seeded run and chooses your starters for you, but it goes to 50. Good for farming candies and such.
What’s “not implemented” and “partially implemented” signifies?
@@_Nisoo_ (N) or not implemented means the move or ability does absolutely nothing. (P) Or partially implemented means the basic move works (base power, physical/special, accuracy, etc) but additional effects are not. For example acrobatics always has the same BP regardless of if you have items.
@@Nephthys575 And there are moves in the game that are well and truly busted because of the partial implementation, like Belch and Poltergeist.
I have been wondering for my own run where the heck it ends!
I'm really enjoying the game so far, so high hopes for it. I just wish you could get a species candy for leveling/evolving a Pokémon to facilitate unlocks instead of depending solely on catch/hatch because the RNG is rough and you can get utterly screwed. Nature hunting is also a pain.
There are a couple of downsides to basing a game on Pokémon (besides legal stuff), though because it's never been a balanced game and the nature of endless battles just reinforces the glass cannon strategies. There isn't much point in training a defensive Pokémon and a lot of Pokémon are just thrash.
The rival fights can be disgusting since she always seems to find mons that prey on your weaknesses and has very high level stuff.
The rng for the items is also a bit much. I feel like once every zone you should be guaranteed to get one of the rare qol items (Map, IV check, Gold/exp booster, etc).
All in all I'm enjoying it but hoping they manage to make it slightly less punishing for weaker mons to have a chance (or straight up rebalance mons/moves like some romhacks do)
Tip: turn on "prioritize animations" in settings to see all Pokémon have animated sprites
The way I remember it is that Fairy types are weak to Steel, because metal hurts the fae, and poison, because... uh... you can poison fairies, I guess. But you'll notice that steel and poison are not SUPER common for attacks, which is part of why Fairy is such a powerful type. Also, fairy offensively is wild, because it's strong against Dragon, Fighting, and Dark, and only resisted by Steel, Poison, and Fire for some reason.
Anyway: I am once again SO on board for a Pokemon Roguelite series
Funny thing fairy is not weak to fire though just poison and steel
In this video we assume thst cause the 2nd typing is weak to fire (cottonee which has grass)
Edit : when will I learn to read carefully instead of skim through every comment...
But yeah fairy attack does resisted by poison, steel and fire type.
The poison thing is because poison is a prevalent evil thing in fairy tales
You should turn on mixed animation which makes the non animated sprite animated
Snivy went through a whole redemption arc
Snivy is my favorite starter... poor danger noodle being so mistreated
Honestly I am a hero for not cutting him, but he eventually earned his spot the second we hit a zone that was 90% water Pokémon lol
I like Snivy alot too!
Wait until he learns stat changes, field changes, and hazards like stealth rocks stay between wild battles too
that is criminal
Stat changes persist through battles? Smh
@@jacethomas5562everything resets once you enter any trainer/gym battle
Hello Sir Retomation, there is a setting you can turn on that allows you to retry a battle you lose from the start. it may not be something you want to use often but its nice sometimes on a boss battle where you think you could win and just want to puzzle solve rather than just call it a loss. Also you should be able to boost past the level cap with rare candies, its a niche use case but it can be useful depending on the state of your team.
This game has been blowing up lately glad to see you keep posting. The meta progression is very fun to work towards in this system
So I guess the strat here will be
Focus leveling 1 pokemon > Get Exp share > Level 2 other starter pokemon through exp share > Last 3 slot in your party is for catching higher level wild pokemon so that you wont get out leveled.
Depends - later into a run you can stack exp shares to the point where you can keep an entire party leveled. Early on this is the strategy though.
All hail Pogbat! Glory to the Pogbat!
This game might be the most addicting thing I’ve played in years possibly ever
I love this series so far, I really hope it continues for as long as possible. One of my favourite games coming from one of my favourite TH-camrs, couldn't be happier to watch it.
losing azumarill was a heartbreaking! what a monster, with huge power and fantastic typing
Happy to see a second episode of this!
This game is everything I’ve wanted from a pokemon roguelite thank you for sharing 🖤
If you get the chance to get the map in the future, you should go for it. It gives you a choice of biomes, so you can go to an area where you have type advantage or where you want to catch something to shore up your weaknesses. It's really powerful. Anyway, keep 'em coming, roguelike pokemon is so fun to watch.
Very addictive to watch
You can increase the game speed in settings which can help make the runs a bit quicker
Charmander AND Totodile? A man of culture and taste.
So glad you got this series going since I was away from your channel for a few days thanks to real life. Loving it!
This game really has some hefty difficulty spike lol
Oh, and about the lengh of normal mode : it goes up to wave...
200
It's more like an inverse bell curve from what I see and have experienced. It's hard to get off the ground and hard to land, but the middle doesn't have very many speed bumps.
this game is seriously addicting, thank you for showing me this Mr. Reto
Lets go two days in a row. Keep it going. This is a fun game after all.
Cool to see another take on another Pokémon roguelite. I loved Emerald Rogue so much.
Hey Reto. Watched you play this the day before, am looking very forward to seeing this get this attention. I hope you continue to play this for at least a few weeks.
Games fire I’m about to download thanks for the showcase reto look forward to the rest of the series 👍🏽
Keep playing I am loving it, game is so much fun :D
If the Pokémon you are battle is something you already caught you can tell if it’s an upgrade on what you have. If the pokeball is coloured then it’s an upgrade, if it is gray then it is the same or worse
Great tip!
I thought it meant that if it's coloured it means that it doesn't have any new traits except for ivs and grayed out means it's like a different gender or different Trait you haven't caught? since you can change gender/trait/passive
@@supp9397 I just got that information from reddit and it seems to have held true through my playthoughs, albeit I havent looked any further beyond ivs, and have only beaten classic once, but i believe the coloured means at very least new/better ivs, again this might be some misinformation tho, apologies if it is
If the pokeball is greyed, it means you don't have the ability/gender/form yet.
I want so much more of this
My husband just started playing this cause of you. had a blast watching him play. so thanks for the video.
Looking at the suggestions at the end of the video, I'm kinda surprised the playlist on best Let's Try games isn't called Best Tries
Congrats you've made history
@@Retromation years of pun training, that's my peak
Loving the Pokerogue content! MORE MORE MORE
I found Mareanie to be very good, helped me survive a lot of battles
Cannot WAIT to see more tomorrow!
Want more of this please!
I do love watching this- Can you do a Ghost run when you get the starters??
1 tip from me, when starting out, always try to catch the pokemon, especially if the pokemon doesn't have any pokeball or still greyed out. You'll have stronger and more pokemon variety next you start next run.
Glad to you see you having fun with PokeRogue ^_^. Endless wave 5850 soon?
A bit of a shame that the runs are so long but the gameplay is just so awesome. Looking forward to the continuation.
Hey Retro
Thanks so much for covering Pokerogué!
I watched your first video yesterday and immediately startet a run today.
That was soooo much fun
I think I also got extremely lucky since one of the starters was purple outlined. Turns out it had the Pokerus-Virus. So I want for Bulbasaur (Since that was my first gameboy pkm ever
Thank you so much for showing me the game, ive been addicted since the second i registered.
Your last video got me into this game. I earned a voucher my second run, and hatched a Keldeo (Costs 7 and is a really good starter) which is my favorite legendary on my first hatch. Thank you for making great videos.
Edit: I also found a Shiny Lachonk after a couple runs.
Idk if anyone has told you this yet
But you want to farm the Shiny Egg in the Egg Gacha cause Shiny Pokémon help with getting the higher rarity stuff in the shops
I was just watching the first episode, but rare candies revive your Pokémon.
The egg moves seem interesting. Is that the one you have to unlock with candies or just a bonus for eggs?
Setup moves also keep after battles, only resets in trainer battle
Congrats on beating your first Gym Leader boss!
Keep them coming boss❤
Yaaaaay, I'm addicted to this game
My man done totodile dirty 😢
If and when you unlock Famigo, he sweeps the first few dozen floors!
letssss goooooo retrooo with another bangerrrr ‼️‼️‼️‼️💥💥
Fairy is Weak to Poison and Steel Reto! Those are the only types it's weak to, so hopefully it shouldn't be that bad to remember!
YES! MORE!
This game is so fun
Let me just say, flamigo has got to be one of the most broken starters I’ve ever seen in this
Yo what? How have i not known about this? And i love pokehacks too!
Yayyyyyyyy new pokerougue video lezgoooo
Sure looks like you're best off actively replacing your party. There's no way to keep six party members up on EXP.
It's better to let 1 or 2 mons lead to start but I've actually had a full team at VERY high levels towards the end. Exp charms and a stack of exp alls makes a big difference.
i cant beleive how lucky you were with the natures like modest slowking adamant chewtle and jolly magikarp are insane. if you get a chewtle with strong jaw and turn it into a g-max drednaw (g-max pokemon in this game act like megas but more focused on bulk than attack) then you could destroy the game.
More pleaseee❤
"It is a bread dog"
I laughed way harder than I should have. 🤣
Reto, youre misusing rare candies and exo 😅
You gotta spread it around a little, too often your "main" mon is level capped and the exp on it is wasted haha
Maybe once the mon is a level or 2 away from the max, you can swap it for another.
Huge stretch to call it misusing
Wow, so many 0 IVs today
Mooree!
why is it when i try to play my game is so laggy?
check if Hardware Acceleration is on in the browser you're using
@@Retromation it was on but its still super laggy ):
Try with it off, or try a different browser. That is what I would do.
Retromation: I'm no Pokémon expert.
Also Retromation: Rarely need to check moves, types, strengths and weaknesses...
Me: Hmmm... Something smells fishy here and it ain't coming from Magikarp... The math ain't mathing...
By that I mean comparatively. A Pokémon expert is someone who basically _only plays pokemon_ and I learned from the comments of Pokémon Emerald Rogue that I am no expert lol.
@Retromation
By that very narrow definition, yes.
But for someone like me who has barely touched a Pokémon game and seen some episodes of the series, you're selling yourself short by a country mile.
Watching other TH-camrs waffle around with chat as guides and having every single internet source ready to go.
So you're leagues ahead of the "run of the mill" content creators, especially when this is a game series you barely cover and plow through a large swat of games.
Then I'd say you're very good and have an impressive talent for remembering stats on the various Pokémons.
❤❤❤
Closest thing to gungeon I’ve seen 😂
👍
"Ive been told to look out for highlighted purple around it, doesn't look like it" Proceeds to see like 5-6 of them within the next 20 seconds lol D:
ones that I have _access to,_ I guess I thought that was obvious enough to go without saying lol
@@Retromation fair enough. I was just teasing u anyways. Big fan
200 to finish the game :)
Mas
This game has been so fun and I’m going to be so sad when Nintendo inevitably takes it down.
They aren't even accepting _donations_ on any affiliated site so it will likely be alright.
@@Retromationthat’s actually very good to hear.
Wooloo sucks
Me as a pokemon games player watching you just get confused about stuff like this.
If you have questions about those egg moves you've unlocked ask me I'll be happy to explain it to you
Timestamp for self to awnser there questions 13:00
Lol Boomer Pokemon...
You mean not every child plays pokemon on a Gameboy Color with matching cartridge, then their best friend does the same with the other color?
I was red and bro was blue all through school... Yellow was for posers
Hey, I am in the same boat lol
I used a screwdriver to take off the front plate of my GBC and trade it with a friend. So I had a yellow/green GBC with Pokemon red in it
