I absolutely love everything about this film, but I get a more masculine vibe from Louis XIV's paintings. In the latter one can indeed see a gentleman and a man of tact, sensibility and culture _but quite masculine as well, not feminine looking like this actor. Again I love this film, but I'm not sure that this is a very accurate depiction of this king. His portraits give off a very different vibe.
72 years of reign. He was an elderly king in the most famous portrait. And was a young man when he danced.
I wouldn’t really cite portraits of French kings as accurate potrayals as artists were often told to embellish and potray an idealized and unrealistic form of a powerful person (Louis 16 was by all accounts a round and chubby man but his official portraits paint him with herculean musculature, and Louis 14 definitely did not have have muscular legs in his 70s). Portraits of state leaders function a political use (as stated in the movie) so they have been idealized since antiquity. Also, you might be projecting masculine traits of the 21st century unto a man from the 17th. Masculinity has dramatically changed and Louis XIV definitely would be considered feminine nowadays.
