The composers of the French Baroque had a way of using kettledrums that sets them apart from everyone else - stately and stirring at the same time. I never tire of it.
This piece, Marche pour la cérémonie des Turcs, was a mocking satire of the Ottoman court, originally performed as a comic ballet before Louis XIV, provoking gales of laughter. th-cam.com/video/OO2HBhwk05g/w-d-xo.html The bombastic levity of the music stands in stark contrast with the tragedy taking place in the background which comes to a point as Marais callously rejects the request of the lovelorn Madeleine to visit her and play the piece he composed for her. In her despair, she hangs herself. The music becomes a satire of the shallowness and self-importance of Marais himself which is why it was chosen for the scene.

There is no cello 😉 only viola da gamba, but, strange enough, some musicians play the bow like cellists. The one on the left plays it right for the gamba.
The music is from Le bourgeois gentilhomme. A musical play, making fun of a business man playing at being a gentleman. Its from a brief dance routine prior to the entrance of the Mufti to make M. Jourdain a Mamamushi. It is a total farce ending in M. Jourdain allowing his daughter to marry her sweetheart. The sweetheart is pretending to be a Turkish prince and Jourdain is duped into allowing the marriage.

Wonderful barocco music, Lully's style and many other talents, in centuries of highly inspired and sophisticated musics in the west-European countries : humanist and moving musics, as sacred as exceptionnally beautiful (all the contrary of the boisterous, wild and raging tamtam noise of today which is neither music nor harmony).
Lullly died from gangrene caused by hitting his foot with his conducting staff (I believe he was seated at the time). He refused to have have his leg amputated because that would mean he would never dance again. I hope dancers and dance fans admire him for being a martyr to the art of dance!
