I remember my Mum and Dad asking me if I wanted to go to boarding school when I was ten. I said yes. More I think because I thought it was what they wanted to hear than anything else. I was certainly too young to make an informed decision. Do I think under 13 years old is too young for any child to go to boarding school? I'm not sure, possibly some children would benefit.
What I do know is that I have a 4 year old son and I would never consider sending him away to school until he's 18.

Thank you Richard. I can so resonate. I too was asked if I wanted to go age 10 and said yes. I hated myself for so many years because of that. I feel that at 13 we really need our parents around and we need privacy. And very few boarding schools have privacy even to this day... take care, Piers

@@pierscrossI agree too. I now think it is wrong even at 13 for any child. They shouldn't go until they are 18 and going to university.

Basically boarding schools are children's homes for the children of affluent parents. But in a state run children's home there is a better adult staff to child ratio than in a boarding school. There are full time house parents in the children's homes and they attend local schools during the day time. In boarding schools teachers are often not around during the evenings and weekends and it's left for the matron and a few house masters to supervise the children.

Hi @lemsip207, so true. Most boarding schools the ratio is 1:50 adult to child especially at weekends. I spoke with this head teacher who worked in boarding schools for many years and he said that due to safeguarding and risk assesments and all the paperwork teachers have even less time to spend with the child nowadays. The neglect has increased...th-cam.com/video/5_i0UjHIlxU/w-d-xo.html Take care, Piers

@pierscross In state run children's homes, the ratio of staff to children is far lower depending on age.

@pierscross It's horrific. I have seen the effect of boarding school on day pupils in private schools that take boarders, on the friends of ex boarders, and the spouses of ex boarders as well as the ex boarders themselves. I now think even 13 is too young to board even for some personality types. You are going through puberty changes then.
I remember what it was like to be a teenager at home. My mother was always around but mostly too busy to talk to us, and watching TV was more important to her. We only had deep conversations during power cuts and when the TV set broke down. But I was in a house safe from the other children at school at night.
No matter how emotionally neglectful your parents were, it is still better to attend a day school than to be a boarder.
Psychological bullying and punishment is as bad as physical bullying and punishment. Witnessing it can cause trauma too.
Even if you live in the Outer Hebrides or the Australian Outback don't send your children to boarding schools.

    13 is still too young.

Hi @MsSuperKatz, yes I agree. I feel that we begin with 13 and then move to 16. A friend of mine is starting to investigate whether we can ban early boarding. Take care, Peirs

In East Germany they used to send children to state boarding schools if they were training to be in the Olympics. Even at 13 that is too young.

I have to disagree with Charles Spencer. My sister and I were given the choice to go to boarding school. I was 12 and my sister was 9. My sister found it harder to adjust at first than I did, however we both believe that it helped us in many ways. I disagree with anyone who makes sweeping opinions on behalf of others.
