  • The Canon P was a sleeper. Built to last, easy to use, outdid the Leica M3 in several areas, and was affordable.
I take you through this 60 year old delight and show why it was an M3 killer.

Nice to see you reviewed the camera not the lens, most people forget that the lens influences the aesthetic of the final image. The camera is the recording tool and some tools are made better than others. The fact that this camera model is still going strong is a testament to how well they were made.

I fully agree. I own a couple Canon VT Deluxe cameras with Voigtlander lenses. The Canon Rangefinders are superb.

Agree with your comments Greg. I bought a Canon P a few months back and am very impressed with it. Use it with a Canon 50mm f1.4 LTM that i already had which is my favourite vintage lens to use on my Fuji. I was tempted by an M3 but nah, spent A$250 on the Canon, much better!!

I've got a Leica M6 and two Canon P's. They are both very beautiful cameras and absolutely love them. However, I am currently using my Canon P because my M6 needs to get CLA'd for shutter speeds, rangefinder, and burned curtain. lol Also, you look like Rob Halford! 🤘🏼 🤘🏼

I can't sing though... Have fun with your M6 when you get it back

You won't go wrong with the Canon P. A Leica alternative! using an LTM Summicron is the nearest we can get to a Leica M system. Awesome!

I have one with the Jup 8, love it. Liked your review and, more importantly, your enthusiasm for the camera.

Interesting... It looks like a great camera.
I moved away from rangefinders to an SLR in the early 1980s because they were more capable, but I was glad of my almost pocketable rangefinder camera for bush walks or similar outdoors activity where a camera and a bag of lenses made an impractical impediment to movement. Something like this would be a great compromise in those situations, where parallax isn't much of an issue, and even with two spare lens it wouldn't be a burden.
I have a vague memory of one rangefinder camera with removable lenses but they were a kit, and each had a different connector which adjusted the viewfinder to match the lens.

I never had a rangefinder back in the day... went from Olympus Trip 35 to Mamiya SLR, then the Olympus OM1.

My only gripe with the Canon P is it's very hard to see the 35mm frame line especially while wearing glasses also the lug mounts are a little forward so the camera tilts up when hanging from a strap. Besides that I love it, what a fantastic feat of mechanical engineering.

Just wonder how to correctly focus if wearing glasses while shooting with canon p, i got mine recently, but i found it hard to see the frameline in some angle, any tips? Thx btw nice vids!!

Depends on your prescription strength I suppose... I do have to move my head around a bit to see the whole frame, bearing in mind it's a 1:1 view, which is a bit bigger than any Leica.

Hi Neville, I got a notification of your comment on the KEKS video, but youtube isn't showing it to me. So, I'm not ignoring you, I just can't see it... however, I do have it in my emails, and yes, that Hedeco meter looks interesting... I presume the batteries are easy to source? If you get one, let me know how you like it.
      Cheers
