    My first rangefinder was a Zorki, and it was a gateway drug. Too finicky, only set up for a 50mm, so I moved to a Canon 7. Love it, but it's been on my shelf since I got my M2. In fact, I'm getting close to selling or giving both of them away. The M2 is just perfect, as simple as it gets. I'll be using it until old age gets me. But part of that is my M2 was bought for me by my wife, and the best Leica is the one the woman who loves you got you because she thinks you're worth it.

    Learned a lot here! Just bought a Konica IIIA to try out the rangefinder concept for cheap. Likes the 1:1 viewfinder. Fun to take pictures with both eyes open. Want to upgrade to something with replaceable optics eventually, considering Canon L1/VL or an old, beaten Nikon S2/S3. I don't want to go for Russian stuff these days... Politically demanding! I rather buy KIEV 4a or something else from Ukraine!

    I'm not a Leica heater, however... I am a practical person, so for an average price of a 60 year old Leica M2 (and I'll not even mention M6), I can now buy a used, digital, mirrorless medium format camera that I need for work, and that makes Leicas simply too expensive for what they are. So indeed, say Canon 7 would me much more reasonable option for me...

    • @ribsy
      @ribsy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      makes total sense. if you need something else more, of course go for it

    • @TravelWithAC
      @TravelWithAC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Difference is, you buy a mirrorless now, in a year itll be worth half what you paid for it. You buy the leica, you may be able to sell it for more than you paid for it.

    • @tomislavmiletic_
      @tomislavmiletic_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TravelWithAC Yeh butt... Given the current state of affairs, I'll be able to sell that Leica for same or more money only as long as people have enough extra cash without to grab into the budget for food. On the other hand, at least for now and in my case, a mirrorless camera will still be able to make my some money...

    The long term market value for the P is not the same history as most. 20+ years ago, it was in the $350 area for a minty copy. I considered them overpriced and declined to add one to my collection. Then about 8-10 years ago, the bottom fell out for no reason known to me, and the same camera could be had for $125 -175. By then, my collecting interest was over. Now they are back up in the high $200 - mid-$300 range. Is that from social media hype? Don't know. Is the P a good buy for more than $300? Not in my opinion. It shares its shutter with the 7 and 7S. That shutter is very durable, but over years it looses spring tension and the top speeds slow down well out specification. If yours suffers this fate, there is no repair possible. You learn to love a slow 1/250 setting as your top speed. As a lifetime Canon RF collector and occasional user, my preference if buying into the Canon RF as a user would be a VIT or VIL. Its shutter is as easy to repair as a Leica. Its viewfinder is much superior to the P, with the warning that its complexity can suffer loss of brightness if the viewfinder optics coatings degrade. Tip: NEVER used a collapsible mount lens on a Canon V or later model without very carefully trying it first. Canon installed light baffles in shutter box in its later models where Leica and other copy of same did not. You can thread on such lens extended for use, but if you collapse it into the body of a Canon, it can hit the interior of the body and do terrible things. From personal experience, I can report that early Canon collapsible lenses present the same problem that Russian and others are known for.

      My Canon P has the fast shutter speed lag issue. Why is it that this can’t be repaired? If it’s because of a loss of spring tension, can’t the spring be replaced? Or is the tension in the shutter itself, which can’t be replaced?

    Great video, I had the Canon P before giving in and now I have an M3. They are very similar in operation, but the P has more framelines and easier film loading. I actually use my Canon LTM lens on the Leica and I love the images I get from it.

    It could also be the other way round with Leica and Voigtländer. 😊
    I HAD an M6 for nearly 4 years and during that time period ... "ah, dead!" (3 times for repair). Then I sold it and bought a Voigtländer Bessa R4A which is still running fine without any repairs.
    I kept the 3 Leica lenses I had, though. Because the lenses make the difference for me.

    Everything this guy says about Leicas can be said about classic Canon Rangefinders. I've owned a Leica M3 (double stroke) with a 35 Summilux. I owned and own again a Canon VT Deluxe with a Canon 50 f 1.8 ltm and two Voigtlander Color Skopar wide angles.(21 and 35).
    I'll take (and did take) the Canon over the Leica. No question. You can buy a warehouse full of film for the difference in price...or extra bodies. Solid and more dependable.

    Leica is overhyped, a Nikon F4, F5 or F6 with one of the 110.000.000 lenses produced for the F mount will perform as good, but cheaper….!

    • @bhop0073
      @bhop0073 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love my film Leicas, but I do agree that they are overhyped now. They're just tools... and yes, you can take similar photos with cheaper cameras (although the F6 is going for Leica prices), but you're comparing SLRs to Rangefinders which are completely different user experiences. I have a bunch of film Nikons too and love shooting both, but the way I shoot seems to change depending which i'm using.

    Leicas are so dumb, I’ll NEVER buy one, it’s nothing but an overpriced status symbol. Sure, they’re really pretty and everything-but I have YET to see all these INCREDIBLE photos that Leica users are producing! All I see are photos of them HOLDING their Leica! I challenge ANYONE to shoot more compelling photos with their Leica than I can with my original Nikon F camera body and vintage Nikkor glass! I dare you!! Let’s meetup, shoot for an hour and see who gets more compelling images. No Leica user would ever take that bet-why would they, it’s not about shooting for them, it’s about having an expensive bauble to show off.

    If you want to make the best pictures possible, do not buy a Leica. Leica’s are more about the experience of using them and owning them. Let’s be honest, most buy Leicas for the clout as well and that’s totally fine. Of course you can make amazing images with them, but you better know you shit.
