I was about to come say the same damn thing. Everything I've heard by this band is killer! But all those vocals on the acoustic-ish version. Man. I'm confident I'm insecure, another killer phenomenal song they do.
These guys are awesome! My band was lucky enough and we got to open for them at a tiny show in Waco Texas the day after they filmed their Jimmy Kimmel show. Definitely some of the nicest people out there
As a lover of all types of music these guys are perfect. Aspects of classic Billy Joel, gospel, jazz, Earth Wind and Fire, with Gracie who is just ridonkulous. Way too much talent and musical passion in one group.
Clyde was a real prodigy from a young age, writing music as a kid. Both his and Gracie's voices are INCREDIBLE. Every time they release something new it's always a banger
A trick with gospel/jazzy passing tones: when in doubt, if it's not chromatic movement try to treat the target chord as the "I" for a moment and think of the two passing tones as a "ii -> V " and it'll probably be a "ii -> V -> I ". It isn't always the case but it can get you in the ball park more often than not
I’ve been on the Lawrence train for years. If memory serves Clyde wrote the theme song that’s featured in the movie Miss Congeniality when he was five. Super talented brother and sister. The rest of the band is not too shabby either. If you wanna continue your journey i highly recommend you check out Melt. Like Lawrence they are also a young up and coming New York City soul pop band. They have 2 female powerhouses in the band. Lead vocalist Veronica Stewart and lead guitar player Marlo Shankweiler.
YOutube algorithm must be showing Lawerence some love. I just discovered them a month or so ago and man her and their tones blow me away. Glad they got your treatment.
NO FREAKING WAY!! You reviewed this?! I’m SO happy you found them. Started following this band back in 2016, saw them in Minneapolis in 2018 with 150 people. Glad they’re finally getting the recognition they deserve!
"I'm gonna get beat on here" lolololo, way to power though the challenge. @ Michael, you kick ass brother. Your teaching style is fantastic...zero ego and easy to understand. I appreciate that you don't have perfect pitch as the magic is in the problem solving. I'm a git grad as well and "logical guesses based upon theory" is how I approach these things.
The joy you showed while listening to this was so fun! I appreciate your expertise but even more, the breakdown of this masterpiece of music. New fan of your channel!
They use a lot of secondary dominants - the dominant chords leading to different degrees in the scale. Used a lot in Jazz but also in all sorts of genres, like for example A7 to Dm (Vi degree in F).
If anyone watching this is still wondering, here's the correct chords for the song. Understandably hard to find out on the fly like this. F to A7 (explains the C#) Dm7 C#m7 Cm7 Then the hard to find tones in quick motion: F9 and the bass moves to B real quick Bbmaj7 Aaug Dm7 F#dim Gm7 to Bb/C to finish Good luck practising
Another thought... how often have we seen a vocalist cross their fingers and PRAY to make a leap to a high note once in a song? But Gracie is hitting it on EVERY chorus... (the "So I tell myself when I sleep at night" lyric at 6:45). Don't mean to fanboy, but everything about this song is locked in!
I am so excited for this! Just watched Don't Lose Sight (Acoustic) today and my head exploded. Have loved this band for years, but there's even more new stuff since last I really sought them out. Excited for your reaction. BRING THE ENERGY! :D
Going to see Lawrence opening for Jonas Bros in Albany tomorrow. And I grew up just down the road from SPAC. Used to walk to concerts through the woods.
I'm a drummer....long time drummer but really enjoy you site. And REALLY enjoy your assessment of Lawrence; they are CRAZY good and in person will leave you drained.
YES! I saw these guys open for someone, it may have been RIPE but im not sure. They were really fantastic. Also, if you don't know Ripe check 'em out. YOUR WELCOME!

They way he can arrange a song into something completely different, but also just as funky... ugh love them. Want to see them Live so bad
They are killer… never seen them… I’m not a huge fan of folks that sing in “cursive” but it’s the way of young vocalists these days. That said, this is really cool.
Mike, love your channel. What you’re talking about at the end there is a bit how I define art. There needs to be a separation of ART & CRAFT. The level of craft you have helps you communicate the art that is in your brain. Sometimes, like Dylan, you only need the art, but every now and then you see both in full display in one performance. Jon Bellion discovered Lawrence and signed them to his label. He also helps write and produce a lot of their music. I definitely suggest checking him out. You won’t be sorry
I think you’d love the storytelling in Waylon Payne’s song “7: 28” . It broke my heart, I had to listen 3 times the first time it showed up in my playlist. I couldn’t find a live version, so here’s the music video th-cam.com/video/mFZdCnxPz0g/w-d-xo.html

Like, how is this not the stuff EVERYONE is listening to and talking about? I don't get it. Prediction, this band won't be secret for long.
Hi Michael, you asked for Guitarists to consider for these fine Guitargate videos so here is something different, a direction I've not seen you venture into so far. Jeff Boyle is the guitarist of the band Jakob, a NZ band who have toured the states, Europe and Aussie. Jeff uses an alternate tuning. Check out this video - th-cam.com/video/t4ovUVNs4VY/w-d-xo.html
