Returning the Catalina 22 sailboat I grew up on to RACE READY after YEARS of sitting in the sun!

  • After mastering the art of driving on land, Zero to Awesome heads out on the open ocean (lake). This 1980's Catalina has actually been in the Z2A fleet for quite a while but has sat on a dock not getting very much love. Today it gets the love that is much overdue. The interior of the magical vessel needed a solid scrubbing to combat a few years of mildew, and the hull was a tad chalky from exposure to the glorious Texas sun. In this episode we scrub, and wax, and wax, and wax, and wax, and wax, and wax.
    Guess what, we also share some of the AWESOME cars (and other nonsense) we come across out on Instagram.

    Hey man! I saw on your bug video that we are from the same town. I graduated high school in the town you are in, and my parents still live there while I’m in college. I found you while looking for Catalina 22 videos. I’ve had a 1977 C22 for a few months now. If you ever need help with the boat, I’d be happy to lend a hand. It’s great to see another Inland sailer like me. Love the channel and see you around!

      Did we just become best friends?
      Are you still getting your Catalina out on the water while in school?

      Without a doubt. Haven’t had the chance to take her out yet. On weekends when I can make it home, I’m doing some small renovations to the boat. Where do you sail at?

    Thanks for the video. I seem to have a catalina 22 sitting in my driveway. Long story but somebody needed to love her. Trouble is I know nothing about sailing or caring for a boat. So...if i could ask some questions maybe someone could provide some answers.
    She has plenty of dirt and oxidation. To clean I have been told everything from sos pads to wet sanding with super fine grit. I dont want to harm the gel coat. Second what type of wax or coating do you use after? And lastly, when I eventually get the mast up....or step the mast ( yes I bought a book) do I need one of those tensioning tools for the stays?
    Thanks so much for the video and any info.

      I would suggest a gentle pressure wash of the hull with some soap. Then use a random orbital buffer with a cutting pad and some cutting compound. The buffer with the cutting compound is essentially the same as using a very fine sand paper. The pressure washing and cutting compound will take care of the chalky oxidation.
      After that seal everything with a decent marine wax. Not regular car wax, marine wax does make a huge difference. I used a 3M product ordered online since it was 1/2 the price of the same thing at West Marine.

      Andddd, yes. Tension the shrouds and fore/back stay. There is a ton of load on the mast when the sails are up and you do want to make sure it is distributed evenly.

    @1:15... isn't there a ladder hanging on the back of the boat???

      Only really works in the water, a bit of a jump from dry land.

      Thank you! Raced it over the fall and winter series. Racing is cancelled right now so have been out a few times for fun. There will be some more videos on all the “surprise” things I had to fix...

    Don't do it!!! You'll need that beard sometime and if you don't have it, well it's bad luck. But the C-22 is looking great. Thanks to all your work.

      Don’t worry, it grew back. Was really weird being 12 again for a while.

    How is your JKU towing the Catalina 22? Thinking about towing with a 2016 JKU willys that has 3500 max tow rating.

    • @ZeroToAwesome
      @ZeroToAwesome  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your tow capacity is 3500 then you probably have the “Max Tow” package which is 3.73 in the rear differential and stiffer springs. Dry the Catalina is 2,500 lbs, throw in the trailer and a whatever you have in the boat and you are probably right at capacity.
      I have had no problem towing or stopping. Everything has been well balanced on the trailer and safe on the road.
      Long long ago my parents towed this same boat with a station wagon then a Chevy mini-van. I even remember someone at the boat club as a kid who would tow their C22 with a 80s Vette.

    I'm about to pressure wash the inside of mine, it was neglected with about average neglect so it's pretty nasty inside.... And out.

    • @ZeroToAwesome
      @ZeroToAwesome  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      “Average neglect” completely understand that!
