Wet Shaving with a Vintage 1930's Tark Electric Safety Razor

  • Once I found about about the existence of this particular piece of shaving history, I knew that I had to try it out. It's one of the first electric razors and the only electric wet shave safety razor that I'm aware of. I was a bit nervous going into this shave due to the age and the danger of electricity around water, especially with old technology like this, but I decided to minimize the danger and press on. Join me on a trip back to Depression Era America and watch me try out a very unique razor.

I so agree with you on the aesthetically pleasing designs of the early 1900's. Today's products most of the time look very, very dull and the "sterile" designs just scream "No imagination put into this product!!!"

Given the number of blades in the package, I suspect the man who spent his hard-earned $ in 1935 tried it once like you did, threw it in the drawer and went back to his non-electric Gillette. Talk about buyer's remorse!

That razor would never have made it to market today, and today we have GFCI outlets, which didn't exist back then. Wonder how many men were electrocuted, or seriously shocked, using one of these. The natural inclination would be to rinse the head under a running tap, or in a filled sink/bowl. One slip or careless splash, and you'd have 110v pulsing right through you.
You kiss your wife, and tell her, 'honey, I'm going to go temp fate today and shave'.

And I'd be curious to see someone rework the Tark concept to use batteries and a more standard type of blades such as GEM or Injector.

There's no need to worry about anyting most circuits nowadays in a bathroom use a GFCI I know this because I've wired in thousands of them secondly looking up the patent I noticed that the actual blade itself moves side to side which then it brushes across the comb portion kind of like a modern day hair clipper so I believe the water is necessary in order to keep it lubricated just my two cents it looks really neat though

I hate to be an old stick in the mud, but I saw that the ac outlet wasn’t a GFCI. Is that outlet connected to a GFCI breaker instead? We want you to be around for a long time 😀

You know, I’m not 100% sure. Most of the other ones in the house are GFCI. Thanks for your concern!
