If you ever seen Sinbad : The Legend of the Seven Seas, Mega-Abomasnow always makes me think about the giant snow owl of Eris. Something in the snow feathers and the murder gaze.
@@GoldGuard Losing Snow Warning would instantly make Mega Aboma the worst Mega of all time, surpassing Audino. Weather not being permanent would mean that Mega Aboma would only be able to abuse Ice Body very briefly unless you also paired it with another Snow setter (which sounds kinda cheeks). I agree with EWGF that keeping Snow Warning would be very beneficial for it now that Snow actually buffs Defense, while still allowing it to function as a snow setter for the rest of its team if you want to abuse it.
I’ve found the most success using Abomasnow with a Choice Scarf, mostly due to surprise factor. You’re just clicking blizzard with it 90% of the time, unless you’re clicking Aurora Veil.
Mega Abomasnow is the most mixed bag of Game Freak's "just make it bigger" mega philosophy. Tyranitar and Scizor were win-more megas, whereas Abomasnow was (unfortunately) severely flawed to begin with. A change in ability or typing would've helped significantly, but Game Freak never went that way. Tragic, if ya ask me.
It's always important to consider when mons were released. Snow Warning Hail did not end without another weather being summoned in Gen 4. This was also the gen that introduced Blizzard having perfect accuracy in Hail. On paper, that's pretty strong, especially coming out of gen 3. It had a pretty damn good movepool for it's time. My guess is that they decided to balance it with a slow, mediocre stat spread. Bad typing was likely considered to, but was more about keeping it a pine/christmas tree.
Abomasnow is yet another victim of the "mixed attacker stat spread" spam that GF loved in Gens 3 and 4 (Cacturne, Banette, Blaziken, Sharpedo, Cradaunt, Absol, Mothim, Infernape, and that's not even all of them). It at least somewhat made sense in Gen 3 pre-physical special split but it usually just kills a Pokémon's viability by making them frail AND slow
If Snow sticks around rather than Hail in Legends Z-A or any mainline game after as well as Megas, we could see a fairly competent Ice type. Granted, all the weaknesses suck, but getting a defense buff with the weather is really nice.
A white whale I’ve been chasing in competitive Pokemon is making a Pokemon with both max Atk and max Sp. Atk investment work. In gen 6 M-Abomasnow was one of my attempts at this. It was on a double-weather (Ttar was the other one) Trick Room team with Magic Guard Reuniclus as the TR setter to ignore the chip from both weathers. M-Aboma did in fact hit like a truck and the team was fun but it was a bit too complicated to be consistent
Personally, I've always found mega Venusaur to be the most complex mega. It goes from a speedy chlorophyll sweeper with sleep powder, to a far bulkier beast that can both deal knock outs and support the team. Instead of just being "Venusaur but bigger" like most megas tend to be, it completely transforms the role Venusaur fulfills
Tbf to normal Abomasnow, Candice's in BDSP is a legit threat. Facing a fully EV'd Abomasnow with a normal ingame team becomes very scary because there isnt much that actually switches in on its ice/grass Stab combo. Also keep in mind that Sinnoh is notoriously lacking in fire types, and the few that are available arent exactly the bulkiest mons.
Ice with an extra resist or two to something it can hit normally would be a godsend for Abomasnow in general. Flying is the one I'd root for, but I think there's cases for poison/water and probably (but also not particularly usefully) grass.
Honestly even though it's not as relevant anymore. Gen 5OU has seen a resurgence of Abomasnow as an Anti-Meta pick, seems most teams seem built to work on Sandstorm. As well, I've had personal success on Gen 4 OU making a team Pivoted around Substitute, Blizzard, Wood Hammer and Earthquake. Substituting on the Predicted Heatran or Infernape and ANNIHILATIING THEM with an Earthquake is a different kind of pleasure. Also you kinda check half of Tyranitar's sets and it's weirdly good at checking Gyarados and non-choice scarf Flygon. Abomasnow was left behind by power creep and awful balancing decisions with Ice Types but I've really grown to like it since I've been trying to reconnect with Gen 4 OU.
I’ve always thought that mega-abomasnow should have an upgraded snow warning, like the primal weathers, that just shuts off some of it’s weaknesses- then it might actually be worth using over ninetales-a. Although I think Freezai brought base abomasnow to worlds 2023 not on a snow team just on it’s own merits, so you never know.
It should be mentioned that as a weather setting lead its always going to win out for keeping its preferred weather on the field not only is it slower than a good portion of weather leads it also re sets snow on mega evolution the only other pokemon that does that is tyranitar who happens to be 1 point faster than Obama Snow
Tbh mega aboma couldn’t really be saved as is even with the 50% defense buff, and an ability swap could work, tho of course it would most likely be an upgraded version of hail: Mega aboma rework idea: Defenses 105 -> 90 Speed 30 -> 60 New ability (name not decided yet): sets sleet Sleet effect: only goes away once the Mon switches out. Functions like normal snow, but doubles the speed of all ice types (ally, self, and enemy included). Singles it would essentially be comparable to rr aboma except instead of being fit only on hail, it would actually prefer being a self serving mega that functions on it’s own. While in doubles it would have deadly synergy with ice type partners.
IMHO if mega abomasnow wants to be properly viable come Z-A, then it should get a special snow variant that is either Hail but with the snow variants, or a snow that boosts both defenses
For some reason I've always liked abomasnow? Snover itself was adorable and i loved it's cry... Maybe that's why? Anyway, why does abomasnow have soundproof as a hidden ability? It should have thick fat atleast :/
If / when megas are brought back in a MAIN line game, pokemon should go the radred route, and give Mega Abomasnow Slush Rush. That on top of the snow buff might actually make it worth......something. set up snow, boost defense, mega, now youre also fast af boi (this wont even happen cause in regular games, mega is 30 speed, whereas radred keeps its base speed, but would be cool in theory)
Abomasnow's stats aren't as bad as you say. It has enough hp and defense to take just about anything, and a Blizzard that always hits. What's not to love?
Are you really trying to argue for normal Aboma's stats? It can't take just about anything. It's probably fine for a normal playthrough, but for competitive it has literally nothing good. Beforehand base 100 was a good speed stat, nowadays you will be outsped with that. Same has happened to every other stat.
@@vez3834 I could. And as for speed, I never cared for it for that exact reason. That if you get outsped, you sent a mon out for no reason. Better to be able to take many, many hits.
Mega Abomasnow needs to have an Ability that raises an Aurora Veil at the beginning of any turn (and on switch in) that it is snowing and not an already active AV up. Icy Rock Abomasnow goes in, Snow Warning sets snow, Abomasnow Megas, MegAbomasnow's ability sets AV, 5 turns pass or something scrubs Screens, still snowing, MegAbomasnow's ability activates again, 5 more turns of AV. Also given all the Gumshoos-Trump memes we need a regional varient of Abomasnow that is a thinner, taller evergreen only speckled with white atop its head. Obamasnow.
I do wonder if Pokémon that spawned weather, if their mega didn’t have the same ability, would they be better or worse. Or if mega garchomp had sandstream instead of sand force
I don't see Sand Stream benefitting Mega Gar. Now if it was its base ability and got replaced by Sand Veil/Rush after going Mega, that'd be another story
I feel like the difference between 60 speed and 30 speed is effectively nothing. Not literally obviously but you're already outspeeding almost nothing so dumping that bad speed to awful isn't really much of a loss.

Honestly I’d be ok with it staying the same with the change from hail to snow. It could really help it’s bulk.

Abomasnow is thankfully decent in Gen 5 as an anti-meta pokemon due to the weather wars.
