    Natalie Merchant possesses one of those rare, pure, angelic voices that mesmerizes and captivates listeners. Nobody else sounds like her. Not even close. That voice is one in a billion.

      When I saw 10,000 Maniacs during that same year, The Cowboy Junkies and then Andrew Belew performed before Natalie Merchant and her bandmates came on stage to everyone’s great delight. They were superb in concert.

      In November 1989 I saw them supported by the Indigo Girls who were superb. "Kid fears " my favourite track by them now and then .
      10,000 Maniacs were brilliant with Natalie playing the final encore solo on the piano = "Verdi cries"

    • @mrupright
      @mrupright ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I saw them Fall 87 opening for REM. I was walking around the venue looking for the entrance and passed by Natalie as she walked from the tour buses to the backstage entrance. I immediately recognized her because I stared at her face on a poster every day for weeks while waiting for my dorm elevator. I didn't tell my friend who she was until after we passed.

    • @keithbate9405
      @keithbate9405 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mrupright I also saw them in 1987 in London on that tour . That evening I preferred 10,000 Maniacs to REM. They were touring "in my tribe" , which is my favourite album by them.
      Many years later on a solo tour I also walked pasted Natalie as she got out of a car about to enter Wolverhampton Civic Hall.
      She was still doing her stage dancing in those days . I miss that !
      ps she has a new album out April (2023) and is touring the UK and the US again with it !

      It's May 8th 2021 and I just listened to one of Natalie's CD. I don't have Tigerlily, which did not do it for me, but the rest is precious enough to me that I listen to it periodically. I might give another shot at Tigerlily, since I sometimes dislike/disinterest something because I'm simply going through a rough patch. When I hear her song from the 10 000 Maniacs group about coming into light, I say to myself that just like Peter Gabriel she needed to be on her own ; Peter's "version" is "Solsbury Hill".

    I remember watching this in 92/93 when I was living in Lake Havasu City,Az. I was there for six months working for a company that went belly up because none of us really knew what we were doing. Despite that, that six months was a lot of fun for me because I’d never been out west before and was blown away by the scenery, the people and all the adventures I had during that period of my life. The job evaporated and I had to move back to the Midwest but, to paraphrase this song “Those were the days”.

    After living 11+ years in the US over my lifetime, I can honestly say that 10,000 Maniacs were at that time one of the most incredible bands I'd seen. Heard These Are Days being played in a Barnes & Noble one Saturday morning as I was thumbing a magazine & never ooked back.
    If you've never seen their MTV Unplugged video, then don't waste another second. "Sublime" is the word. IMHO, the best single Unplugged I ever saw, which is up against some stiff competition I know. The album is never out of my car either. Best feelgood album I ever heard. All amazing players & with Natalie's voice on top, well that's just gravy - Totally captivating xx

    Interesting. Rob is playing the song on half-step down open E tuning. Always thought this was played on half-step down standard tuning. I guess it was done that way to be able to get open notes like high E and B behind the chords' changes throughout the song. Thanks for uploading this gem. I really like to study some of my guitar heroes playing styles and this video provides some cool stuff by the great Rob Buck.
