It’s almost like we’ve been conditioned to bring a drink and our favorite snack with us to watch these gaming handheld videos 🤔 Good news: I’m so much more hydrated now, and so is my poor cat!
Awesome video man! Glad you are getting sponsored videos. I upgraded my SD to 1TB as well. Totally didn't do that battery saving mode thing and didn't even disconnect the battery. I used a screw driver instead of a pry tool and it left an ugly mark. Also I left my 512GB SD card in the STEAM deck and cracked it in half when I opened the case. Worked in the end though!
Fun fact if you put one of these SSDs on top of an SD card you'll notice that it's smaller and the only part sticking off the SD card is where the notch is. And for those that are confused I said SD card not micro SD card. Second fun fact there is such thing as a mini SD card but they were only around for a brief second so you've probably never seen one even if you're as old as me. Irl my dad did buy a micro SD card that came with both a full sized and mini adapter. That's the closest thing I've ever gotten to seeing one.
I did find it useful! I've been considering upgrading my drive forever but those cache updates that Steam does drive me crazy. As it is, I have a 1tb SSD full of games along with the 512 MB internal (also full) and whenever I restart the deck, it takes forever to update all those games.
I got a used 64gb steam deck last year. I upgraded to a 1tb ssd and swapped out the old noisier fan for the newer slightly less noisy fan. Was all surprisingly easy. Somehow I managed to forget to switch off the deck and did the fan swap in standby mode. Ooooop. 😅. But everything worked out okay. Just after that, steam lowered the prices before the OLED came out, so I didn't actually save any money buying a nearly 2 year old used model 😂. But at least I know my way around the inside now. My deck never leaves my house. Too bulky, but it's perfect for playing on the couch or in bed like you say. Also I used to try and run everything at as high settings as I could get away with. But these days I usually play on medium settings for less heat and more battery. Thanks for another great video dweeby. Are we getting any cool console art merch soon?
@@TechDweeb It depends what fan you started off with. If you have the 'Delta Fan' then you can upgrade it to the quieter 'Huaying' fan. Only the early models used the delta, the later models all came with the Huaying fan as standard. I don't think it will be as quiet as the OLED though, as it's much more efficient and produces less heat to start off with. Have you tried switching between the two different fan curves?
Awesome video! I know you've probably already answered this a couple hundred times, but when you say gigglebytes are you just saying GB or are you specifically referring to GiB?
This video is great! Ive been very hesitant to mess with my deck because I dumb and clumsy and this video makes me feel like I can actually make some improvements. I am a little confused however, about how to handle replacing the data on the old drive. If you have been using your deck for a while and completely remove the SSD I assume you would have to reinstall all the apps, mods, shader caches etc that were on the old drive. Is there an easy way to back that stuff up? Do you just have to start from scratch? Was this addressed in the video and I totally missed it? I am very new to all this and I feel like I am at the point where i know just enough about it to confidently say that I have no idea what Im doing. Any advice or resources are very much appreciated. Thank you so much for the concise and entertaining video.
If you want to copy everything from the original drive into a larger one, then you need to clone your original SSD with either a software or a disc clone device. The software is available free, but you'd still need a USB adapter to plug both drives into your computer.
Small tip - I've seen people plop the deck into its case upside down to reach its back side and protect the screen and sticks. Awesome tutorial though. Do we have to disable battery saver mode after the drive swap?
I would imagine the new operating system install would put that back to stock. But the process to check if it's still on is at least relatively painless.
If u download a game on a micro sd does the ssd write and read speeds still affect the game? Sorry I couldn't find this answer on Google in the year 2024
Bought a 64GB version, a 1TB SSD and a 1TB micro SD less than 6 months ago. A couple of weeks ago, I bit the bullet and bought a 2TBSSD. And I'm running out of space already 😅
@@hasoonnine Ha ha, usually one at a time BUT I like to have all my library available. Baldur's Gate 3 - 145 GB, Uncharted - 125 GB, Mass Effect Legendary Edition - 110 GB, Middle Earth: Shadow of War - 110 GB, and that's without the HD textures and video packs some of those have, which saves about 100 GB. Add in 10-15 games around 50-70 GB each (MHW, Like a Dragon, Pillars of Eternity 2, etc.), and it really starts to add up. Overall, 144 games installed and roughly 640 GB of free space available between the SSD and the SSD.
There is something you can do about stripped screws. I've used a method like this to get into devices with stripped screws in the past. The downside is that you will need replacements when you go to put it back together. beetstech.com/blog/how-to-remove-stripped-screws-in-computer-repair
Came for the giggle-bytes. Was not disappointed.
The "He died my money now!" gag made me spit my drink.
Bro same

My brother has a steam deck and I'm so envious. I gotta show him this! thanks for the upload :)
I did not know these drives had come down to the level of affordability that they have. I WILL be doing this also. Thanks DeckTweeb!
Went Sabrent 2TB 2 days ago on my ROG Ally. Feels great to finally have some space.
Thanks for helping encourage people to upgrade their storage/tinker with their device.
I do this with all of my handheld PCs definitely a life saver for a hoarder like me that wants all the games downloaded in case I want to play them.
Can't believe how easy this was to do. Thanks, Tech Dweeb!

Love to see that pretty steam deck oled
Thanks TechDweeb for a great tutorial! I had a few issues with a Sandisk SD card, but an alternative Integral one did the trick.

was eyeing this exact ssd
I bought the 1tb oled model, I don't regret it, but yeah wish I had this video then lol.
I loved The Fabulous Mr. Fox and Isle of Dogs.

Oh I've been thinking about the fan thing. I'm very impressed at the fan of my OLED deck but the LCD deck is way noisier.

This is an awesome video. Thank you tech dweeb I am going to purchase one of these SSD’s
Finally got my giggles updated, great video// thanks !!
Sweet, Game on everyone... Need. A TechDweeb sweater. . !?
great video, well explained but can we upgrade it to a 2tb ssd ?
changing the ssd is like getting a tooth filled, doing a shell swap is like open heart surgery
I wish the 2230 came in a larger capacity, but I'll take the 1TB. 😊
They come in 2TB as well
This is the first video of yours that I've watched in quite a while...what happened to your voice? It's much deeper :0
I'm a MAN now!
(aka got a new mic)
Not bad TD, game on.
I like the fart sound when he grounded himself by touching the metal case. I appreciate the finer things in life. I am an adult.

nice quick video TD you spoil us
a pretty great tutorial, and always a great idea to learn how to tear down your equipment for upgrades and repairs
I've had 3tb for the last 18 months. 2tb micron nvme and 1tb sandisk u3 a2 micro sd. Still not enough. Waiting for a 4tb nvme to come out.

Bot Vice, or Dead Estate
Bank card in overdraft 🤣 finally got my steam deck this week. 512 oled. Maybe I'll upgrade too... 🧐
Recently sandisk has launch 1.5tb sdcard
The retroid pocket 2s metal editon is my new favorite hand held you should buy the metal edition
Is there a way to do this without having a PC? I'm a Mac user.
Yup! Just use a different program to flash the image onto the SD card (I believe Etcher should do the job etcher.balena.io/#download-etcher).
Isn’t this SSD also very much compatible with the ally? Been planning on buying one
I had to do a double take when he said giggle byte 😅
I just ordered kingspec 1tb SSD , so waiting...
If I have windows on an SSD can I do all of this straight from the deck?
You can also just use a normal 2280 nvme. Cheaper and even more storage. I have 4tb and a 1tb sd since a year and no problems at all
apparently it heats up more
What’s the name of game at 0:36? The one right before Witcher.
Dead Estate
Is there a way to get steam OS on the new ssd without a PC?
Im playing my steam deck on the double couch with a chair on top lol 😅 🪑 🛋️
Someones storage got full didnt it.lol. I bought the 64gb model year ago and installed a 512 gb sabrient ssd. Don't regret it one bit
Can I use desktop mode on my deck to download the bios to the SD card prior to swapping the ssd drives?

Someone help I stripped the last screw so I can’t take the back off yet
Careful with that glossy screen. Wouldn't wanna accidently dox yourself.
Like you did here 2:05
Could I get something that's more than 1 tb?
Yup!
So... It's probably a stupid question... What was in the old SSD?..
I wish this was easier
my dumb ass stripped the screws on the back of my steam deck so im stuck with emmc :(

You can try putting a rubber band between the screw and screwdriver. With enough pressure, it fills in the gaps. hopefully, it allows you to turn it.
If it has 8core cpu it beat all handheld present in market
