    Hi I’m wanting to start a baking business but wondering if I will be able to as I have two dogs in the house. I noticed you have a pet next to you in this video, do you have any more information on this? Love the video btw!

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy
      @Sweetthingsbyamy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes you can, It depends on the inspector but mine wasn't fussed about the dogs and didn't even mention it. It largely depends on your situation as for me I lock them out the kitchen 99% of the time unless someone accidentally lets them in or they need to go out the dog flap to the toilet. HOWEVER my dogs are very small, non malting and can't reach the worktops. I always say for owners of moulting or bigger dogs the expectations will be different as they could contaminate the food.
      :)

    Dear Amy, this video and your other video regarding the paperwork have been SO USEFUL!
    I'll be honest, when the inspector rang to say she would be visiting in a week I was bricking it. I typed in 'hygiene rating' in TH-cam and your video was among the first that popped up, and honestly it is the BEST one out there! It's so detailed and informative.
    On the day she was to come she gave me a time slot of anytime between these 3 hours but arrived half an hour early before the time slot so be prepared! I wasn't even letting her in for a few mins as I hadn't finished the hoover! V stressful but my own fault.
    Moving on to the actual inspection, because she came earlier than expected I still had the frying pan out and some dishes in the sink eek! But I guess that didn't bother her as they like to see it how it is. I didn't have fridge thermometers, a double sink, downstairs bathroom or a pedal bin (which I read you need) but she didn't even ask about them. She asked about the thermometers and I said I'd ordered them but they were delayed (typical!) Nor did she check the temperature of my fridge. She didn't even look in my oven but I opened it deliberately cos I'd spent ages cleaning it! 😂
    I didn't have any proper paperwork arranged beforehand, but the day before she came I got a folder sorted and printed out pages from the Safer Food Pack online. I also got together some of the most recent shopping receipts I had and highlighted the things I used for baking. She was really pleased to see the folder and receipts and said THIS is what you need as if someone makes a complaint you know where you have sourced your ingredients from. She did check the baking cupboard and asked about allergies. Also checked the cleaning cupboard and I told her I was shocked to find a lot of cleaning sprays like Flash or Dettol are not BS standard as we're required to have them so she told me I can get them from places like Makro. As I am only part time (taking on an order as and when usually through Instagram) she said a lot didn't apply to me (including the 2 sinks) and she even joked that I worry too much!
    All in all it was much better than I had expected. I displayed confidence to show her that I know what I'm talking about (which I think really helps otherwise they'd question do you even know what ur doing) and she told me that I'm doing really well. Thank God! At the end I just had to sign a document where she graded me 5*. It took about 40 mins in total as she was asking me lots of questions from a form she was filling out (I think some ppl get this in a phone call)
    I know it's a long update but I thought I would try and be thorough in case it helps anyone else. But mostly I just wanted to just come on here and say THANK YOU AMY!!
    You have no idea how many people you have helped and will continue to help. It's so lovely that you took out the time to make these videos to help out strangers. You are amazing and I'm so grateful. All the best for your growing business! xxx

    Do they look through the whole house? For example i package and sell sweets from another room. So would they look in the kitchen, bathroom, living room? And would it matter if one side of the room was used for laundry?

    do you know about rules with dogs? i am worried about my space cause my house is only 800sqft and my kitchen is a 10x10 and i have a rottweiler. my house design is not conducive to adding a kitchen door or anything like that.

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy
      @Sweetthingsbyamy  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I always advise to keep them out of the space especially big dogs as some people may be conscious that they could reach the counter (even if you know they are trained not to). I would recommend a stair gate across a door frame or between walls, or putting the dog in a separate room 👍🏼

    Could you possibly do a video on how your customers collect thier orders. If there is no contact, how do they collect. I know its a bit of a silly question, but I would really like to know x

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy
      @Sweetthingsbyamy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello, it’s alright not a silly question at all.
      There’s two options depending on your areas restrictions.
      1st option is to wear a mask and gloves then put the item on the doorstep for them to pick up.
      2nd option if no contact, you leave a little table / box if it’s not under a covered area which you can leave the box on. You give the customer a time slot then you leave the order on there, whilst you wait inside and get them to confirm when they’ve arrived. Then after they leave you sanitise the area for the next person.
      Hope this helps x

    This was such a well made and beneficial video! I’ve been binging your channel✨☀️ Thanks a tonne xx Recommended to complete the Level 2 hygiene certificate because the inspection will basically be a repeat!
    1) Do you bake with Cream? Or Fresh fruit?
    (2) On a baking day what do you do? Check fridge temp. Sell by dates. Clean surface just in case some one else used them.
    (3) Where do you keep cleaning products? For example: Under the sink or buy separate box and keep yours separate from your family members. Keep them away food.
    They are looking for you to have a double basin. If you don’t use your downstairs toilet for hand washing. They will check your toilet.
    (4) Where’s you kitchen / fridges? One for main family and one for me in the garage. [clean garage]
    (5) How are you managing deliveries through COVID? Contact less deliveries nobody enters the premises. I don’t enter their premises. Postal services etc.
    (6) How many times do you wash your dish cloths? Wash daily and throw away weekly or bi weekly.
    (7) Cleanse and sanitise: fridge, worktops, windows, ceilings, floor or furniture (dining table).
    (8). Do you have a food safety and hygiene certificate? Get it a level 2 certificate prior to registering.
    (9) Do you have insurance. Very much advisable.
    (10) Do you have an allergen certificate? Can be found in her separate video.
    *Extra tips To get a 5* (1) Have a really clean and organised kitchen from appearance! (2) They may check regular food cupboards if doubtful. (3) Label every product of you want to get extra points! (4) Explain away! Be courteous and engage I.e. “Here’s my fridge and my thermometer for etc. I check the temps through the day”. Shelf for chocolate with nuts etc” (5) Paperwork printed out such as a Cleaning schedule, Certificates and Allergy list for different recipes. (6) Clean Front door handles, door handles around the work space, fridge handles, oven handles, toilet sink, kitchen sink.

    I am still a little confused by how come so many industrial kitchens (delivery takeaways) like the one's on ubereats or deliveroo that have been there for over a half a year and still have their food hygiene inspection pending, do they just not register for the inspection or does it sometimes take up to a year for them to actually come for inspection?

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy

Thank you so much Amy for sharing your experience, I have started my folder of paperwork and also revisiting all my recipes and and ingredients list and print them all out and organise them nicely , it might not be anytime soon but I will get ready and just be sure I maintain the same routine. Hi I have registered my business and have done my level 2 and will do the allergy one. But I’m really worried as I have a Labrador and a cat. I have an open plan kitchen with no door I can put the dog in the porch/where the downstairs loo is the cat mainly stays upstairs. Does anyone have any advice on this? My dog is still a puppy so in a cage at the moment any way and will be till he is too big. My house is always spotless my friends think I have ocd! Im not worried about that just not having a door! Thank you.

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy
      @Sweetthingsbyamy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think as long as they can’t run around the kitchen that’s fine, pets aren’t a make or break for your application you just have to make sure they can’t get to the food (more important as your dog will be bigger & cats can often get on worktops) I advised that my dog mainly stays out but needs access to outside so occasionally walks through and that was fine.
      Other option is a stair gate 👍🏼

    Hi, I'm in the process of starting a dessert delivery business from home... waffles, crepes etc. Just wanted to know what did you put on your insurance. I put 'caterer' and the price was £190 for the year but if I selected 'take away' the price then went to £650 for the year. Just wanted to know what you selected... Thanks

      Basically the dairy goes off out of the fridge, they typically advise 3 hours. Therefore if selling cakes with cream you need to advise customers of this :)

    Great video, quick question I am going to turn our spare room as a baking room (will have metal prep table, fridges) obviously I won't have a sink in this room. Will the sink in the kitchen & bathroom (I live in an apartment) won't be using meat, fruit, cream etc .. will this be ok?

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy
      @Sweetthingsbyamy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I can't see that's a problem, you may still need a bowl in the baking room for handwashing (warm water and soap) then washing up in the other room or vice versa.

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy
      @Sweetthingsbyamy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No as long as the kitchen is tidy and clean they shouldn't mark you down. The dishwasher isn't included i dont think, most recommend the sink and a second washing up bowl on the work top for handwashing :)

    Having worked in a food production environment I don't think it's too hard to get 5 stars. It seemed to be less how clean you are and more about how well you know your processes and if you follow them.
    If understaffed businesses with low paid employees can get 5 stars then a sole trader should easily

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy
      @Sweetthingsbyamy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad it was helpful! It depends on the area as some have more questions than others, mine wasn't worried about my dogs however they are small and are kept out the kitchen as much as possible (it's the only way to the garden so occasionally they walk through to get out). As long as you aren't touching them before the food and they can't get onto the counters I believe there's no issue. Cats is slightly different as some can jump on counters etc.
      Its mainly down to you to make sure they can't contaminate the area :) if they can't then your okay

    Hey, what if the situation in my house is that there is no extra sink downstairs to wash my hands in and there’s no Downstairs toilet. Would this be a big problem for hand washing before cooking? (Regarding to around 7.50min in the video)

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy
      @Sweetthingsbyamy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, you’ll have to double check with your health officer but as long as you have a separate hand washing basin eg a bowl I believe that would suffice. It depends whether you have to have a downstairs toilet, sorry I have one so I never had to ask the question 👍🏼

      @Sweetthingsbyamy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey as far as i am aware if you don't have a toilet or double sink, you can use an extra washing up bowl on the counter as a handwash basin. Check with you EHO if you want to check this is acceptable in your area:)

  • @somethingaboutnay6019
    @somethingaboutnay6019 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Would it be ok to do things in your room if you were renting since the kitchen is communal and risk contamination...instead would it be ok to have a setup in your personal room by parting of your work area from your bedroom area (But it’s still self contained)? etc

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy
      @Sweetthingsbyamy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the question. I would recommend using a spare room if possible as i don't think you would be able to use a bedroom space for food.
      In terms of cross contamination you could have set hours you use the kitchen eg 10am-12pm or avoid meal times. You could also have a separate fridge for storage.
      I use my home kitchen for baking but the kitchen extension worktop space. I don't use the oven if other items are being cooked.
      I would recommend checking with your landlord too as when it comes to rented places you have to get permission as technically its their property you would be running a business from.
      Hope this helps :)

    Hi, I have a few questions. I’m starting my own business soon and wanted to know if I can start before they come around?
    Because, I need to know if I will get enough customers or not. If not then I won’t go ahead.
    Lovely video and explanation
    Thank you!

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy
      @Sweetthingsbyamy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for commenting. You can start 28 days from registering, they might or might not come before then due to covid.
      If I’m honest you have to build the customer base, I’d recommend posting lots of photos of your work and creating a business portfolio of photos on social media.
      You are likely to get customers if you are patient but you need to workout your bills and how much you need to earn before starting. That way you will know if you will make any profit.
      I never thought about not getting enough customers as if you worry it’s likely you won’t do it 🙂
      I’d recommend registering now then you have 28 days to get lots of photos and practice.
      Thanks Amy

    Great info thank you, a question as we couldn’t find any info so we need a door to the kitchen or is a stair gate ok as we have a small dog, I couldn’t see a door in your vid to the preparation area

    • @Sweetthingsbyamy
      @Sweetthingsbyamy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi It depends on your EHO as I haven't found specific guidance. I have a door on the main kitchen a few metres from my area so I close the door when baking. I let the dogs out to the toilet if necessary but apart from that they are locked out the kitchen. My inspector didn't mention having to lock them out so it might not be a requirement.
      It is also a personal judgement you can make, if you have a moulting dog or a cat that could climb onto surfaces i would avoid letting them in when baking. However small non moulting dogs will be less of an issue as you wont be touching them whilst cooking and the hair fibres can get onto surfaces.
      I always say check with your council as some are different but i would just avoid having them in the kitchen as much as possible but there are situations where they must be let out to the toilet etc which can't be helped. :)
