    Kudos on a first class presentation. I lean towards the D850, mainly because ALL my cameras and lenses are Nikon/Nikkor.

      Absolutely. D850 is a stunning camera. Yes it does miss the bess and whistles of the mirror less; but for landscape photography what matters the most. Pure image quality. Nothing beating D850 on that aspect!

    Great video! I understand you like the nikon but what I can see the r5 has a better low light performance in general. I see the images taken on the r5 clearer and sharper, and have more details even in the dark shadow areas. Very impressive performance!

    I have both Nikon and Canon systems. I really want to use the Canon more often than I do, but the functionality of the Nikon always wins over Canon. Perhaps because I have always had Nikon film and Digital cameras and the Canons were always a back up really.

    Last image at 8.43secs the Nikon looks very soft compared to the Canon.

    • @AMPhotography
      @AMPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed and that could be due to the lens. The Canon one was taken with the Rokinon 14 FP the new version and it is pretty sharp where the Nikon one is with 14 24; which is not as sharp at 2.8; but stopping down improves it dramatically. On top; focusing a mirrorless in dark is way easier than focusing a DSLR. Overall there is not much difference in sharpness between those two cameras with Nikon being slightly sharper. But it is almost unidentifiable.

    Very Nice !!!! not a lot of videos there on TH-cam with comparison between both of these (Z7 Vs R5 dominates)Really D850 was the best DSLR ever made. As you also told for Landscape still images both cameras are insanely capable.
    For hot pixels I have noticed that after a long use they become more prominent . On My Nikon Z6 I used to get hardly any of them when it was new for even a 600 second exposure. But now am seeing quite a lot of them even at 200 seconds exposure.
    Anyway happy trip to Iceland !!!!

      Maybe you can try adjusting the equalizer of your headphone and reduce the tribble to hear it properly. It was edited and composed with a DTS equalized Sony WH-1000XM3 headphone and the sound of the bird is really mild. However, if there is any tribble or tweeter heavy sound system, I can imagine that it will have some problems!
      By the way the bird sound is from the location which I continued in the rest of the video.

    I think it’s disgraceful that Canon only offer us one choice of rear LCD mechanism. I understand some people prefer (or think they prefer) the side hinged flip out screen because they’re mainly shooting themselves, but for the rest of us we do not want this obtrusive and slow screen we want a screen that is quick to use and unobtrusive.
    This trend has been driven mainly by youtubers crying that they want the selfie screen, and we are now burdened.
    As someone who used Canon for 15 years I will not buy one now until they offer us a choice.

    • @AMPhotography
      @AMPhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for passing by… 🙏
      I didn’t really understand. You can use the R5 and R6 screen exactly the same way you used the 5D or any other older DSLR. The screen doesn’t only flip forward. It can stick into the back of the camera so that it works exactly the same way as before. For taking pictures; that is how I use it 90% of the time. So not sure there is a difference here except that the screen is bigger and brighter than the 5DSR; which was my last Canon DSLR.

    • @stevenrobinsonpictures
      @stevenrobinsonpictures 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amazing you think that. As a nikon shooter I would kill for this screen. Try shooting astro, lying on the freezing ground trying to do a vertical shot!

      @@AMPhotography absolutely. I am a d850 shooter considering the r5 but what keeps stopping me is the banding on pulls for dynamic range. The shadows don't seem to look as good what do you think?

    • @AMPhotography
      @AMPhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stevenrobinsonpictures So I have been using the R5 well over 8 or 9 months now and did some sunset shots. I can confirm that the dynamic range is not as good as the D850. But Canon has come a long way from my last 5DSR. They are close. But I still rely on multiple exposure when it comes to R5. Just don't want to take chances when the light is good. But with the D850, I was happy to go too far under expose to preserve the highlight without bothering to have separate exposure for the shadow. But as I started doing more video, I need to go with the R5. And with multi exposure I could achieve the same result as D850. So a bit more work but does the job.

    • @stevenrobinsonpictures
      @stevenrobinsonpictures 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AMPhotography yeh I thought as much. Just a bummer when I hike I leave tripod. So I hand hold and don't do x3 shots and exposure blend as I normally do. So thus might affect me a bit. It's plusses and minus both ways. I want a 24 to 70 and I don't want to buy it on a dslr format etc as so expensive and optically worse. I want a cleaner liveview at night...nikons are terrible. But nikons output? Wow

      So to me; if you are doing landscape photography; the D850 is fantastic. Now the price is also cheap and it will give you stunning results.
      If you are using doing other stuff like portrait or action sports; the R5 and A7R4 have way better focusing system. But that advanced focusing system is not that important for landscape photography.
      So it depends a bit on the type of photography you are doing.

    On Canon, Long Exposure Noise Reduction eliminates hot pixels.

    • @AMPhotography
      @AMPhotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for passing by… 🙏
      Yeh; that is the case for Nikon as well.
      But it takes twice the time. Not really practical. The dust and scratch filter in Photoshop can take care of most of those with one click. But it does make the image slightly softer.
      Anyway if I really need to do that (and sometime I do it mostly for astro); I rather take few dark frames separately and use them in post. That gives better results than the on camera long exposure noise reduction.

    Interesting comparison but I did not get it why you did not stay in the Nikon ecosystem and compare the D850 with the Z7II which is doubtless the better landscape camera than the R5. Video capabilities of R5 and Z7II are not that different. Why changing systems so easily?

    • @AMPhotography
      @AMPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for passing by and very good question… 🙏
      There are few aspects.
      1. R5 came as a more complete package earlier. Nikon Z series still had auto focus issues; which is very important for video work. Not so much for the Landscape Photography. I can even live with manual focus for that.
      2. I do a lot of architecture shots as well and I use Tilt and Shift lenses for that. They are expensive and I do have 3 of Canon ones. So I couldn’t let go the Canon system as a whole ever anyway. With R5; the adapter comes for free; so I could just use them out of the box. Wouldn’t work with Nikon.
      3. The financial situation of Nikon is really worrisome. So didn’t want to invest too much with Nikon.
      4. I actually never let the Canon system go. I sold my 5DSR after the purchase of the R5. Mainly due to that Tilt and Shift thing. So it was not a complete switch from Nikon to Canon for me.
      5. Nikon also has T&S (Tilt & Shift) but (they call it PC Perspective Correction); they are not same. Widest of Nikon is 19MM compared of 17MM of Canon and costs almost twice. 24MM of Canon is way better in image quality. 50MM Canon is way better in image quality than 45MM Nikon and has a Macro capability.
      6. I was always a bit worried about sensor dust with mirrorless cameras and the owners of mirrorless cameras did confirm that these are more prone to sensor dust. Canon is the only system that came up with a cover over the sensor. So when you change lenses in dusty condition; the sensor is not completely exposed. In fact it is more secured than the mirror as it is really a cover over the sensor. Not lots of people are talking about it; but it is a huge thing for landscape photography and can save you hours of post processing work for video as well as still images taken at F8 or above (which is 90% of landscape shots anyway). I didn’t mention that in the video; but I probably should have!
      Sorry for the very long reply. But I hope this helps answer your question.
      If you ask for recommendation only for Landscape photography with no need of video. I would say get a 2nd hand D850. Nothing in the market will beat it for pure Landscape photography. Really nothing. It is still the best sensor for pure image quality.

      Yep; for someone doing video probably look more at the new mirror less of Nikon.
      But if someone is doing only landscape photography; D850 is an excellent choice. Especially now that the price reduced a lot. I am still not letting it go! 😀
      And yes; I did have an excellent trip; you can see some of my experience of the trip here! 🙂

    8:23 - the horrid field curvature of the nikon is noted. See how less sharp it is at the sides? Is this the 14-24 again? I am a nikon shooter and noticed how bad it is for this. What was the canon lens used for 14mm?

      @AMPhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For the 14MM asto it was a Samyang XP 14mm f/2.4. Canon RF 14 MM F2.8 has terrible comma and not useful for astro. The RF 15 35 F2.8 is surprisingly good though. I just tested it few days back and the result is pretty interesting. I need to make a detailed comparison between the Samyang and the Canon. The first look of the Canon is impressive.

  • @abhishekshah11
    @abhishekshah11 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    8:07 I don't think you mention this but the canon long exposure is significantly sharper from the nikon, my guess being that the mirror slap on the nikon is to blame here. Yes the nikon has better low light performance in this image, but the mirror slap kinda ruins the sharpness compared to the canon. But one could argue that that's a general advantage of mirrorless over dslr.

    • @AMPhotography
      @AMPhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for passing by… 🙏
      No there is no problem with mirror on DSLRs for long exposure. There is something called mirror lock up. Means; on the first click the mirror goes up and then on the second click the exposure starts. In face on Nikon there is a way to do that automatically and make a delay between the mirror going up vs the start of the exposure.
      However; this is a special setting that need to be switched on and not active by default.
      Mirrorless has no advantage in this aspect.
      Here I probably missed the focus as the live view of Nikon is really bad whereas on Canon I could see the bright starts clearly to focus at them properly.

    • @abhishekshah11
      @abhishekshah11 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AMPhotography @AM Photography It could be focus but since the light streaks are spread slightly towards the upward right direction in the nikon image, I thought it may have something to do with mirror vibration. I think you're talking about the EFCS feature which starts the exposure electronically after the mirror vibrations from mirror going up have ceased. In that case indeed there would be negligible effects, however the exposure is ended mechanically and not electronically, which means the mirror has to accelerated to end the exposure and a tiny bit of mechanical vibration could potentially make it to the exposure. Is it really that significant or not, I don't know but the potential remains. I don't know about the canon system.

    • @AMPhotography
      @AMPhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@abhishekshah11 Rest assure; that part doesn’t make any difference as the exposure ends almost instantly. I have taken 100s of long exposure images. In fact me being a fanatic tripod user; almost all my images can be treated as long exposure. Between 0.5 to half an hour. The closing doesn’t make any difference. And it is more visible for shorter exposure like 0.5 or 1 second as that much light is more important in the overall exposure of the image. Whereas 5 or 8 minutes exposure doesn’t have that much importance on that tiny shuttle movement even if you don’t use the mirror lockup.
      Anyway you wouldn’t miss anything about sharpness of the image due to having or not having the mirror. Long o shoot exposure.
      As I said; overall D850 is tad sharper than the R5. But R5 is overall better camera specially if one does video work.
      If I would have only continued with only photography; I wouldn’t have changed anything above that D850. Even today for landscape photography; that camera is unbeatable when it comes to IQ.
