    The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Personally I found I can avoid the Ugly by simply not taking selfies.

      Is that also associated with the 'Backside' illuminated sensor?

    I feel ignorant for asking this, but what is the cube sitting in your hotshoe?

    • @LandscapePhotographyiQ
      @LandscapePhotographyiQ  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries - it is a cheap spirit level. It saves fiddling with the in-camera menu and keeps my rear screen clearer. You can get one for not a lot of money online.

  • @morgenholz

    Curious. What is the cube you have mounted on the hot shoe?

    • @LandscapePhotographyiQ

      It is a spirit level Morgen - so much quicker for setting up shots than using the back of the screen IMO. Hope this helps.

    Top review from a working professional who has field tested the camera thanks.
    I believe the battery from the D5 can be used in the D850 and will definitely give you more juice. Only problem is you may have to sell a kidney to afford the charger which is exorbitantly priced.
    On a final note why is Nikon gear so damn expensive in the UK compared to elsewhere? The current price of the D850 from the Nikon UK store is £ 2,914. I was able to purchase one on sale (local not grey import) for the equivalent of £ 2,040.

    I love the ISO button placement. I haven't noticed a huge battery drain; lower by maybe 10% or so IMO. I also think the OOC jpegs are some of the best I've seen, and the raw files have a LOT of editing room.
    For the Ugly: the Live View AF is still abysmal compared to Canon but for my clients it's all about the photography image.

    I do wedding/event photography as well as landscape photography. I currently use a D750 with an old D300 as backup. I have been seriously considering buying a D850 since the D300's sensor isn't nearly as good in low light. Not much "ugly" in your review here. I think buying an 850 will be a good move. Thanks so much for your well thought out and thorough review. I always appreciate how generous photographers are with sharing their knowledge and experience.

  • @2klember
    @2klember 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Iso button is a great move. You can control exposure much better and faster. For landscape is not big deal but if you shoot wedding in manual.mode all day it is just brilliant. D850 is epic machine.

  • @derekmidgley

    Good one Tom. Some observations:Dust - strange one - i've had a D850 for nearly 6 mths and luckily only 1 spot of dust so far; unlike my old D750 that gathered heaps. Battery life: yes eats it quicker. But I keep mine in 'flight mode' and sacrifice connectivity features. Auto-power-off: Camera switches off its 'meter' after a customisable number of seconds. Once that's off, assuming it's in flight mode, it should use no more power than if it was physically switched off; unless the shutter (or live view) is accidentally triggered in the bag.

    Nice review and very well done. None of the Nikon DSLRs have had automatic shutdown. I don't have a D810 but D70, D7000, D600, D750, D500, now D850 never had shutdown. Same with Nikon SB flashes. Battery drain while on is minimal unless you leave snapbridge on. :-(. Finally there is something to remember to turn off. Your landscape photos are excellent.

    Great Review. If you are not changing lenses out in the field, I'm surprised as to how you are getting dust in your sensor. I have a D500, D750 and a D810 and have never had dust get into my sensor when I go out Birding or the other shooting sessions, mainly weddings and portraits unless I take my lenses off in the field or leave a lens off of the camera inside of my home or on site and not put the body cap back on. I can see how this can be done if you are out on a Safari because of the amount of dirt around, but stranger things have happened.
    Regarding the ISO button, this was first changed in the D500 and D5 and Nikon did this so that you don't have to take your eye away while changing the ISO. Nikon got very great reviews for this and have been doing this with all of their newer/expensive cameras. I reprogramed my D750 and D810 to do the same thing. You will get use to it and learn to love it. I can see why it could be a problem for you because the video record button is slightly to the left and could be pressed, which isn't a problem on the D750 or D810 because once you programed the video button to ISO on the D810 the ISO button on the left becomes the video record button and on the D750 the ISO button on the left side of the body near the left side of the screen becomes the video record button.
    As far as the SD cards, you are old school and you are right the compact flash card is bigger and easier to manage, especially outside. The XQD slot and Card isn't just for the 4K video, which it is excellent for, but if your are shooting fast action or birds (which you won't be for Landscaping) the XQD provides an almost limitless buffer with super, super, super duper recovery. On the D500 and D5, you can shoot 99 shots non-stop and at the 100 shot it will pause for a moment and you can shoot another 99 shots.
    There are rumors and that XQD might be discontinued buy the new Compact Flash called CFast if I'm not mistaken is backwards compatible with XQD and should only require a firmware flash to work. For me and at this time, there is no need to upgrade as between the D500 and D810, I'm pretty close to a D850 (I don't need to edit 45.7 megapixel files in Light Room, 36 megapixel files are bad enough, but the incredible deal I got on a used D810 was too good to pass on, it was less than half retail) and I have a D750 as a full Frame back up. Each of my cameras bring something different to the table and I'm quite happy with them. If I got a D850 Free or as a gift or half off, yes I would jump at that opportunity, but for now, I'm quite set for the photography that I do. I'm looking forward to a lot more reviews from you on what you uncover with that new D850 camera.

    Good review. Of course, any review is, to a degree,. subjective. For instance, as a landscape photographer I like the elimination of the pop-up flash in exchange for better weather sealing. Also, as a user of a D500, where the ISO button is in the same place as the D850, it is much more convenient to have the same muscle memory for both cameras. And, although I don't have it, the D5 has the same ISO button placement. I think it's fine to make a minor change, so long as you do it consistently. Thought the rest of the review was spot on. Thanks.

      MrHook, he mentions it is when he stops down. I have had no problems too. It sounds like the dust is in the lens, and the lower the aperture number more dust from the elements of the lens show. Cheers Matt

    Thanks for your thoughts. The new button layout is adapted from the D500 and a huge improvement, just get used to it 😉. Being able to tweak ISO during shoot is fantastic. When will you use the Mode button? It’s on M permanently, isn’t it? I fully agree with your complaint on the flip screen. Looks like no one at Nikon shoots in portrait mode. I also am aware of the dust thing. The D500 I use roughly since 2016 and no sensor cleaning have been necessary yet. Not so on D850. The official temperature range is 0 to 40 °C, what are your experiences sub zero (except the need to warm up battery on body). Fuji has -10 to 40 °C range. Lack of pop up flash is really ugly. If no studio strobes are available, I hardly miss it specially in studio alike situations as tiny and lightweight control flash, to fire also non “Nikon Advanced Lightning System” flashes/speedlights (I meter manually anyway by Sekonic 308 and never use that TTL thing)

    Great honest video Tom. I moved away from Nikon to the Fuji XT-2 because I'm an old git with a sore back and the wait of my D800e and the usual lenses for my landscapes meant I was struggling. Now have lighter kit and getting out more. BUT do I miss the dslr?? of course I do!!

I do find the MacBook on the small side for editing (especially as I get older) but my budget gives me the option of going with a better camera, or have an iMac....so the D850 wins out! :)

    G'day Tom, great work on your channel and congrats. Regarding your sensor being clean, you say it is worse when you stop down, that indicates to me that it is your lenses which are dusty not your camera. I have had two D850's for 9 months now, and no sensor dust issues at all. Regarding battery, it certainly lasts longer than the D810 in my experience so I agree with others, that it might be the wireless chewing the battery. I love the new ISO position, for me it means it is easier to change on the fly without having to take your eye away from the viewfinder. Best of luck and congrats PS I also have a D850 review on my channel. - Cheers Matt

    The iso button should be there where it is now. We use iso looking through the viewfinder, so easy access is more important than the mode button which is used rarely. I have the D5, D500 and the D850 and just love where the iso button is.

    That auto on/off doesnt matter much since it draw same amount battery in both, which is almost zero. It just make so you cant use the shutter if its off. And that sd card point. Use a usb cable to transfer images?, and maby use the XQD slot if you want a bigger card :D

  • @PierreBurnaugh

    The thing about the megapixel increases is that they will be bundled with more and better features like better quality monitors that tilt and swivel in every direction. That’s how we’re compelled to upgrade or at least desire to upgrade. I love my D810 but the features on this camera make me want it. Essentially, you’re saying you won’t buy any further models than this. The megapixel increase will be inevitably tied to future models with more and better features. I bet when a model comes out they at least have one to two further iterations already planned these days. The biggest draw is the constant increase in megapixels. I remember reading a few years ago that the ceiling was just about reached for a given sensor size. How they can continuously increase the amount is baffling.

    • @LandscapePhotographyiQ
      @LandscapePhotographyiQ  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Pierre, thanks for watching and your feedback. Agree with what you are saying. As I mention in the video; I personally don't upgrade for the sake of just having the latest equipment, there have to be compelling reasons to spend the money. With the D850 I felt the reasons were compelling. As to the future, lets see what they come up with next! In the meantime, hope you continue to enjoy the D810, its a cracking camera.

      I have a D300. Yes, it is a quantum leap in quality. 12 MP to 45. The other features of the 850 will blow away the 300. I like the 300 because of the DX crop factor but it is staying home this time around. There is also a big learning curve with the 850. AND you will need quality lenses. I don't think LP IQ touched on this aspect of the camera.

  • @XJarhead360

    I received my 850 yesterday (used) from a reputable online dealer, there are 2 in NYC and 1 in Atlanta. The image quality is amazing. Today I shot a bee on a flower with a 24-120 lens. The detail was so amazing you can see the droplets of pollen on the wings. As for the 45 MP size. The are a must if you are going to crop. The dedicated "on focus" button is a big plus. I had so many frustrating times focusing with the shutter button only to have it refocus somewhere else when I recomposed the shot.
    The touch screen is great and you can focus by touching the screen in the area of interest. The SD card I used today was a 32. Using JPG and RAW files I could shoot 222 images. THIS IS WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: There is only one slot for an SD card. The other slot is for the $$$ Sony XQD card. BOO!!

    • @XJarhead360
      @XJarhead360 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      One other plus: The shutter can be placed on "silent mode." This is great if you are trying to shoot birds and small mammals as they get spooked with any noise. I don't shoot video so I have no comments on the quality though some reviewers have panned the video mode.

    • @XJarhead360
      @XJarhead360 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ANOTHER VERY IMPORTANT POINT: This camera will magnify any poor technique as well as any failings of so-called "consumer lenses." You will need top quality lenses to get the most out of this camera.

    Great, honest little video. Viewers be warned. I ordered a brand new D850 from Abe's of Main. Took advantage of their "Halloween Special". They then told me that price was for the "Chinese version" only. So I took the other price. Instead of shipping me the D850 body in a brand new un opened box, the shipped a opened D850 Kit, in which they removed the kit lens. The whole transactions was deceitful and misleading. Viewers here would be better served to stick with a local dealer on one of a much higher reputation. Just read RIP OFF Reports. I'm not the first victim. So now I continue to wait for my D850 from a reputable dealer.

  • @mediocreman6323
    @mediocreman6323 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A few points:
    • Not having vertical swivel on the screen is somewhat a downside, however, even if you crop a 45MP image to 2:3 (vertical), you would have 20 megapixels left. So in many cases and with this camera, you would actually not even need to turn it 90°…
    • The D850 uses a sensor based on a different technology, so yes, your impression is correct, for this sensor is superior to anything else currently on the market.
    • Wait, what?, you'd like a popup flash? Seriously? If you need a light fill-flash, I recommend an old SB-400, but the use of popup flashes is considered bad practice for a reason, the same reason all professional Nikon cameras don't have those. Whatever, get a SB-400 if you really miss it.
    • Concerning battery life, I finally persuaded myself into buying a battery grip. And never looked back. But different people have different habits.
    All in all, nice review. Keep up the good work!

    Nikons standby by shutting the meter off. They can be 'on' and not being used and hold a charge almost as well as if they're manually shut off.

    Seems we all have different experiences. My D850 goes to sleep and I have great battery life. I have had some dust on the sensor but a simple 'air rocket' took care of it plus doing a wet cleaning is pretty simple once you get the hang of it to save the cost of someone else cleaning. I went from a D750 and D800E and I'm glad I did......and I use the same SD cards as I did with the D750. I don't shoot a lot of wildlife or sports, so the transfer rate of the UHS-1 card is fine. Other pluses....focus peaking, focus shifting....all that I've learned and am enjoying.

    • @LandscapePhotographyiQ
      @LandscapePhotographyiQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bill, I discovered the reason for the excess dust. I used a rubber dust blower that was a few years old and found that the inside of it will deteriorate in time, so it will end up blowing more dust particles on the sensor. I've been using the D850 for several years now and I feel it's the best DSLR that Nikon has produced.

    • @billsenior213
      @billsenior213 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LandscapePhotographyiQ Hi Tom: That was a good catch. I often squeeze the blower multiple times before actually using but if it’s deteriorating it won’t make much difference so I think I’ll get a new one. About the button placement issue I see you’ve adjusted. I went from Canon to Nikon a few years ago…now that was an adjustment both buttons and menu. I really enjoy the D850’s resolution and low light performance. Can’t wait to get out and do some landscape photography. I’m retired now so I should have the patience…

    I love my d850. Over 6,000 shutter releases so far. Had dust issue once but is was actually dust/oil on the lens I was using. Haven’t had to clean sensor yet. My battery life is great in airplane mode. Thanks for the vid 👍🏻

      I only had my D7200 from brand new for 3 months, my wrist was in danger of repetitive strain injury trying to keep the sensor clean, I also had 1 professional Nikon service centre clean to remove oil. Not very impressive for a company in my opinion.I traded it for a cheaper model, lost £300, but the shop said take it up with Nikon, Nikon said take it up with the shop. ping pong, not for me.I had a look at your other videos, also fantastic work. I will enjoy watching them many times.I still think the shutter coating might be an issue for dirt. especially if you didn't change your lens, I kept my 50mm on after the first clean, it was attracting crap on the sensor every couple of hundred shots.

    Have to say I like the review, agree on a few of the niggles on the button placement, dust and flash ( I do have a speedlight, but its extra weight on a trek). I find the battery life excellent though, but haven't used it in any extreme temperatures which can be a killer. Overall though, I love this camera and after using it for 3 months, would recommend it to anyone who wants a step up or a more serious upgrade.

    • @gordroberts53
      @gordroberts53 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The write speed of the CF cards has maxed out. If you shoot in burst mode (wildlife, sports) this becomes an issue as the camera can't offload the buffer fast enough with such large files.

    Got 850 2 weeks ago, done 5,000 shots already, i love it. I have beef in places about specific use but its "nice" to haves fixed etc. Quality booms out of this camera, 64 iso is just so rich, and i used much more than i expected. So much so that when i went back to D800 it really felt like i need a second 850 for my weddings, i just would rather shoot with single over both, the D800 showed up so many failings compared to the 850, screen on back, view finder size, even sound, buffer etc, the ISO button and other ergonomics, feels lovely in hand, its so much easier on 850 once your used to it, i just tend not to move from focus window, there is no need to check. SS/AP/ISO/auto iso, all on right fingers, no left hand movement needed. I changed my record button on D800 now to ISO setting for that reason. D850 def love it

    • @MrModerate_kane
      @MrModerate_kane 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Negatives, Screen tilt when in portrait mode is painful but not overly, having LV video have Exposure metering, but not in LV Camera mode, also LV camera mode, when adjusting ISO/SS/AP has no effect on what you see in rear screen, thus the only way was to use it as i did when i wanted silent shooting, is Auto Iso. That means you can set SS and AP which we all know anyways, leave auto iso and you can then shoot to hearts content, Or as i did a few times, set up camera as you want precisely and then go LV for just composition and adj with Exp compensation, not are real "bad" things, just "nice" things to get sorted out. SS handheld without VC needs technique check, i go slightly higher SS if non VC lens as 45mb can show up movement or bad technique. This was best upgrade for sure for me over D800, when i went back to setup D800 for wedding the weekend, i just burst out laughing, its like chalk and cheese, its almost the jump i felt DX to FX tbh, its def an eye opener, not so much for the D810 guy, but still you will notice it, once you try to go back to older equipment you will find things lacking/missing. Also its just that ease of use factor in body. love love love this camera, oh dear, this was supposed to be negatives. PS, 1 big one, Banding on certain light sources in Live View happens. I tested it in an old sports hall with strip lights, i will find out what SS it occurs/stops, but its the only place i have found it happen, all other strip lighting has been fine, seems specific to one type, however that is in the exclusions in the manual.

      Hi PwnedByyaMar, i may be wrong, but try pressing the "OK" button once in LV camera mode and i suspect it will then adjust the display as you adjust ISO/SS/AP... once you've pressed "OK" it will also show exposure metering on right-hand-side of live view screen.

    • @MrModerate_kane
      @MrModerate_kane 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Will try that out, Your talking camera mode, Manual for all, LV, adjust ISo then press ok and see the LV rear view adjust? Hopefully that works as i would love to still control my Iso, although i can limit it anyways in settings which isnt so bad thanks for info.

    • @derekmidgley
      @derekmidgley 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yip, completely manual (i.e. i usually lock my ISO at 64 and only adjust if i have to). And I just checked it. It definitely works. Hope yours does too. Also it seems to 'remember' that i've pressed "OK" once in Live View so it re-enters Live View again in that live exposure preview (or whatever it is called) mode.

    good video. but problem of this kind of videos is, that nobody says, is D850 really better than D810 if its about image quality? (not AF, or frame rate etc. only image quality ). Yes LL ISO has D850 better but if you shoot normal landscape photos and not night sky - it does't really mater.
    do you see any difference in color fidelity, saturation or dynamic range, when you shoot ex. during sunrise, sunset?
    I have to make decision buying D810 or D850 (for landscape) and still could not see any difference in image quality (tested both them only 1 day)

    Just came across this whilst browsing, nice video . I wanted a FX to go with my D500 so decided to get the D850 a few months ago .Really liking this camera , one of my niggles is the shutter shock vibration blur at lower shutter speeds whilst handholding but I find using EFCS in Q helps . Obviously when on a tripod using silent in live view cures the issue . Anyway I'm wanting to get more into Landscape so trying to decide which UWA lens to get , main choice was Nikon 14-24 or Tamron 15-30 but filters seem an issue with those , the options available are really expensive. Other option was something like a Nikon 16-35 f4 but heard it's not so great at 16mm having distortion and soft at the edges

      Irix 15mm f/2.4 or the Irix 11mm for 100-200$ more (manual focus but great lenses in every aspect). The 15mm has a front filter thread and no protruding front element, which is great if you want to use cheaper threaded circular filters.

      Smaller is 'typically' better. The future of technology won't support 8-track and VHS. I agree that SD cards are easy to lose in the field. I've done it. They also fail, and they're slow. Compact Flash is too big and those pins fail with readers all of the time Compact Flash is a dead tech moving forward. It's like having moving parts in storage devices (DONE).. XQD is the only way to fly today. They are large and thick enough to be rugged, they're reliable, and they are smoking fast! Anyone that has a D850 that deoesn't shoot RAW Large should not own a D850. Photographers that are attracted to the D850 are often well versed in post production, where you see and justify the huge difference in megapixels.

    No auto-power off? I always forget to turn them off, this is a killer. All my Canons have that and u can configure after how long to turn off, usually 2 min on mine. I just keep forgettting to turn cameras off. Its a firmware upgrade, they can add it any time if they haven't yet. Battery life - its the cold in Scandinavia which kills your batteries, keep them warm, turn wifi and other useless features off. Dust, maybe its the lens sucking it in?

    I watched this video based primarily on guilt about spending the money to upgrade to it from my beloved D800. I thought the D800 was going to be the last DSLR I would ever need to buy. I now say that of the D850. In Canada this camera cost me $5000, tax in. That's a ridiculous amount of money for an amateur D800 owner, or so I thought, and I wrestled with it for a very long time. I couldn't even use it for quite a while! I'm weird that way. End of story, I need to sell my D800 and I'm only hanging on to it to see if I need a second body for weddings or such, but I don't do enough of that to warrant it.
    To your review: in the UGLY section, you didn't even say XQD once!!! That's the ugliest thing about this camera!! Sony has already discontinued XQD in favour of some new same-form-factor CF format! That means that until the grimly anticipated firmware update, the super fast slot on the D850 is just super useless unless you can go buy up a bunch of XQD cards while they're still available, and a reader for them! Having the primary MEDIUM of the camera fall suddenly obsolete came to me as a nauseating shock. This is your UGLY!!! It also reinforces my opinion of Sony as a despicable company. The D850 uses a Toshiba sensor this time around, so maybe this was Sony's dirty joke to compensate. I have despised Sony for decades, for numerous valid reasons, and this bullshit supports my prejudice. Fuck you Sony. No, seriously.. Fuck you.
    After 6 months of owning the D850 and shooting with it, my guilt has been replaced with excitement and relief. This is an astoundingly good camera and I am blown away with the improvements they've made. I definitely made the right decision.
    Oh, and about the ISO button or whatever, just re-program your camera buttons and stop fussing about silly little things that are designed to keep you on your toes. ;-)

    Put the D850 into "flight" mode. This mode disables the internal wi fi mode and allows battery life to match the D810..
    Sensor dust issues are primarily caused by the attached lens.
    Grime and dust particles get sucked in when the mirror is in motion...

    That ISO button - on D7500 which I use (yea, DX:-)) it is on the top as well compared to old types D7XX and actually it is much better especially for quick shoots (wedding, etc.) where you have to work not only with shutter speed and aperture, in some cases I simply have to increase quickly ISO and with the button at the top I can do it even without looking at the back of the camera. It is just about a habit, for sure ISO is used more often then metering, isn't it?:-)

    common why didn't you stick with the D810 if you can´t handle bigger files! Or why don´t you shoot smaller file size! Have you ever shot a landscape with 100mpx ? When i did with the Phase one IQ3 even my D850 files looked like crap! Can´t imagine to get back for example 24MPX for landscapes ! ( but for newspaper work i would understand to even have less than 24mpx )
    The pop up flash (fill flash was senseless outdoor because of the Sync Speed, so no need to have it !

    • @LandscapePhotographyiQ
      @LandscapePhotographyiQ  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gunter - no worries handling larger file sizes, its the usual adjustment period of upgrading other storage media - and cost! As I mentioned, for my needs, and more importantly the needs of my clients, its rare that I need huge files. Obviously for landscape work pop up flash wasn't essential, but for the odd occasion I needed it for something, it saved me carrying something else in my pack!

    Interesting... I find much of your bad/ugly non-issues. I get almost 2000 images per charge. The ISO button should be usable with one hand, looking in view finder. I change lenses a lot in the field and dust happens but seldom and easy enough to learn to clean your own sensor. I need the megapixels. I crop big. Only thing the CF card ever did that the XQD doesn’t was bend the card reader pins. My SD is back up or overload never leaves the camera in the field. External drives and deleting crap images has solve the storage problem for me.
