BIG WHEEL FAT CAT DIRT BIKE PROJECT

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 28 มี.ค. 2016
  • ATC 250R rolling chassis was $150. I sold rear tires for $75, swing arm for $80, rear plastic fender for $50 and rusty bottom end of the motor for $20. We ended up with half of the bike (front-end, frame, gas tank and seat) absolutely free and on top of that with $75 in our pocket.
    Here is a list of items that we bought for this project. Another ATC 185s for $60. Handlebar grips from eBay $15, flexible exhaust pipe $18 from Orilley auto parts, Pro circuit exhaust tip for $50, white plastic side covers $30, Swing arm with brake drum (Honda fat cat) from eBay for $75, new brake pads from eBay $14.99, Rear sprocket (Honda fat cat) $12, Axle bolt (honda atc 110) was $10, red chain roller $5, chain tensioner bolts $3 dollars each, rear Tire was $60, Vinyl fabric $8, paint $16, Primer $8, 3M adhesive foam glue $8, Aircraft paint remover $10, flat stock metal for engine mounts $8 and flux core welding wire $16. and finally $5 decals or stickers (eBay)
    Rolling chassis from atc 185s was also sold for $50. Entire build came out to roughly $300 not including all the elbow grease and hard labor my kid invested into this build. Thanks for checking out our video and God bless.

    I don't understand why there's 3+thousand dislikes 🤔🤔,I envy anyone who has a relationship with their dad and who has a dad who spends time with his son, kudos man great build!

      Hey Scott
      Glad you liked our project and we appreciate you watching and commenting. Dislikes are from ATC lovers who consider it a sacrilege to cut up a three wheeler. It was going to end up in a junk yard anyways so might as well make something out of it. Cheers

      It's probably feminist and s0yb0ys that down voted this video. I for one am glad that you are spending quality time with your son and teaching him some traditional masculine skills.

      People are just miserable turds, I for one loved the video and what you made out of this ATC. Looks like a fun little bike!

      Because cutting up an ATC 250r is blasphemous. It’s got nothing to do with the father son thing.

      Honda ATC purists will say you're a bad person for cutting up a good wheeler. I say piss off, I'm converting a 1983 185s right now.

    Hats off to you for having your Son involved. That's the most important. He won't be ready to ride that for a while. Good idea just adding the swing arm make it a big cat I like it. Now show us you ripping it up. Awesome job guys.

    Something simple to do would be to reverse each fork so that the angle increases. Much safer . You can also increase fork angle by getting shorter rear shock

      @scottiemanners 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed! Seems sketchy if you ever go downhill with it you'll be over the bars! Needs a slacker angle

    So nice to see a Dad and his Son so close and learning from each other. Very nice builds also and other than some weld spatter not cleaned off your welds are good enough to strong. I only mentioned the weld part as you commented about your welding. I used to build and work on many projects with my Son something to this day he still talks about. Now Started building and working on projects with my 10 year old Grandson 5 years ago he is now 15. It has been so much fun but now I am fighting cancer so my days are about gone. But it's been so great the time spent with them both having worked with my Son and than his Son. What a fantastic life I have had that I am so thankful for. Thank You for sharing, Cheers

    That cheap air filter with no box is going to give you problems in dust n mud. Very cool build. I remember the original Yamaha 350 fat cats when they came out I was 8 years old. I had to use a crate to get on it. So much fun.👍👍

    I've got a 70's 125 cc trials bike I'm wanting to do a fat tire build with, so I can make it a hunting/ TEOTWAWKI bike. Motor runs good but the Trials frame is done. Plan is to put the engine in a XL frame and build a wide swing arm and front triple tree for a ATV forks set.. Now I'm all inspired again. Well Done and a great bonding project for you two. A shorter rear shock would get your steering angle closer to 72 degrees.

      Yours turned out awesome, looked like a brand new bike when you finished with it. Funny story, the first day my parents bought theirs when I was about 11 or 12, we went to test it out in a field locally where a couple other friends was riding. When I went to test drive it, I ended up flipping it end over end about 8 flips. It wrapped the handle bars around the tank, broke the front and rear fenders, and bent the forks lol. Luckily all it did to me was knock me out and chip a piece of bone out of my shin. I still got a dent on my shin from that day. We got it fixed and had it around for years.

    Just a little advice, you should lower the rear shock a little. Also take the front tire off then loosen the bolts on the triple tree and turn the forks around! It would make it more like a dirtbike and more stable!

    Role the front shock tubes around place the front wheel in front of the forks will make it easier to control on the rough. Soften the rear to make it a much nicer ride. Other wise it’s an awesome job.

  • @khenpaulw311
    @khenpaulw311 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very cool build, but i would suggest a few things:
    It looks like the rear shock was mounted in such a way that it perked the back end up way too high. The swing arm should be pretty much parallel to the ground. Using a shorter shock, or remounting it to allow the back end to drop, would 1) drop the back end and get the swing arm to lie more parallel to the ground 2) fix the over-steep front end, giving you better handling, and 3) it would drop the whole bike down lower to the ground, which would lower the center of gravity, improving handling. Plus, the resulting lower seat height might make it easier for your son to ride.
    But yeah, cool build. I love fat tire dirt bikes.

    • @balabay77
      @balabay77  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for sharing your thoughts and yes i will still do more improvements to it including dropping rear end by several inches as well as fixing rake and trail. I tend to cut corners on my junk builds but this bike deserves more attention and love. Thanks a million for watching. Cheers

    Need to bring the fat cats and other big wheel bikes back, still a market for them not sure why they ever stopped making them. But they need to come back. It is a true ATC (all terrain, cycle), bring them back!

  • @johnpike9612
    @johnpike9612 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice build. Two things you can do on the cheap to fix the way it rides and looks, turn the forks around so that the wheel in mounted in front of them and get a cheap ebay spring for a 125 dirt bike on the rear. That will help with the fork geometry and hopefully you won't go over the bars.

    I agree with JaseH1. When I watch your great work with your son, I see him in the near future starting to build his own rigs. I have watched several of your videos and I see him growing, and also doing better work. It shows in his paint application, how he does a better and better job of applying the paint in the base layers. Fabricating the rear ends is also great for him to see you do, because that cements in his mind the fact that he can also do it. Maybe he will build a Rock Hopper in a few years, and you can mortgage your house to finance the engine :) lol. Ahh, the long-term consequences of getting our kids interested in fun projects. On the other hand, you can make great money building bikes like you just finished in this vid. It is a great back-country trekking machine - rigged, quiet and if it has sufficient torque, able to carry a man and a weeks gear up steep slopes and deep into the back country. I want to build one. Where do you get the swing-arms and hubs?

    Very cool, I like it. I would agree with some of the previous comments about it needing more rake. If you changed the rear shock angle (so it sits a little lower in the rear), I think that would take care of rake and seat hight issue. Cause I'm sure your son would like to ride it after helping on the project. Would like to see a off road video.

    • @balabay77
      @balabay77  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Royce
      I will look for shorter mono shock to drop rear end maybe 2 inches. I'm hoping it will take care or the rake and trail issues. Here's off road video th-cam.com/video/k-C-BeEXRzw/w-d-xo.html
