Klon LLC Live Stream Review and Reaction to Klon Centaur Creator Bill Finnegan's News

  • In their first TH-cam Live Stream Klon LLC showed us some cool pedals, including the first Klon Centaur Professional Overdrive and two Klon KTR pedals, and dropped some big news on us!
While I've been at times concerned about Bill Finnegan's attitude towards his pedals, particularly as it's generally opposed to the "perfect is the enemy of good" approach, I'm very at peace with what's happening knowing that his exacting standards are still at the helm.

The same people who claim the original RAT pedals with the LM308 are better than the current model will be saying the same for the old KTR's. Never mind that a hundred TH-cam'rs will do side by sides that show they are basically identical, they will claim otherwise and do all they can to drive up used prices of the old KTR.

Yep, a lot of gear heads need to admit they are basically just collectors and get it over with, as that’s the only justification for wanting an OG KTR or Centaur.

The legend of the Klon has been interesting. I have actually considered buying a Tumnus, when I can afford it. You know, I always want the music thing to be "for profit."

Having compared a Tumnus to a Wish Klone, I'd say they're pretty much neck and neck, some very slight differences here and there, but one is like $100 less. Though now I'm getting ideas for mods and also curious about other kits.

When it comes to electronics Values are values. I hate everything about the klon. The hype, the cork sniffers, the people only in it for the money. So many pedals sound similar. There are dozens of great klones on the market for obtainable prices.
The only reason I clicked the video was because it sounded like he died.

“The cork sniffers” ??? So I can figure this is referring to wine drinkers somehow but I’m lost after that.
You are right, there are a number of great Klones out there, having an OG Klon or KTR simply isn’t a priority most players and gear heads should have. Capitalism has struck again.
But the main reason I want to get one of these new KTR’s is because I love the circuit and pedal so much and it breaks my heart that it’s exploded like it has but left Bill Finnegan without comparatively much to show for it. I feel like some of it is self inflicted on him, but I would like some of my money to actually go to the guy who made it.

The reason KLONS are Magical is if you setup amp to point of breakup and KLON gain is 1 o'clock to 5 o'clock, the Magic of the Amp going thru the diodes......my AC30 Vox with a THD attenuator and volume at 10. The magic is the amp plus the Klon especially in gain mode where diodes start clipping. It's a marriage more than just a pedal by itself.

You mentioned the klon as a treble boost, I've never heard this before but am interested. What settings would you be using to utilise this (if I can intrude).
Also loved the JHS reference 😂

Anything past 10/11 o’clock or so on the treble knob is boosting the treble, though some of the Klones do it differently.
When I use a klone I like to use it as a post dirt pre amp (settings are treble and output at noon or so and gain at like…. 9?) Or also as a final glue for my entire chain, (more treble less gain)
But if you check out my video called “Klon sandwich” you can see multiple ways to use it, including how it make sense to have three Klones in a signal chain

@@BGBSATX tbh when I had a klone I always had the tone knob at around 3 o'clock so makes sense

The most awesome part of their video is the filthy Explorer. TH-cam needs more dirty-ass guitars on it, because fuzz tone is not just a pedal.

Hahaha, That carpet made me flashback to crashing at crust punk houses when I toured with my band.

I use the KTR cause of the break up or boost it does to my already overdriven amp . I set my amp up with a overdrive sound with the pre amp gain about 6 or 7 then use the KTR to push it . Best overdrive sound I've found yet . The Marshall Guvnor is good and the original Zen drive is great but there is something about Bill's design that gives you a great OD sound and it allows you to control the breakup with dynamic of how hard or light you play . I see the KTR's selling for $1500 here shortly . I bought mine for $380 in the summer of 2017 on Reverb . I would happily pay $500 no regrets . They are the sound I'm looking for .

I tend to use my Klones going into my amp at around 3 and the clean boost will take my amp into OD no problem, and yeah I love it.
I’m going to do more stuff with my Klones that explore how it sounds in multiple settings, because lately I’ve been wondering… if someone doesn’t like the Centaur or KTR, do they even like their amp?

@@BGBSATX I remember looking on Reverb about a year or two after I bought my Klon KTR . They were going for $200-$250 . I was going to buy another one for a back up but never did . Then one day I went on youtube to look for cool tips and trick on how to use your KTR or Centaur . Five Watt World , Tyler Larson from Music is Win , Chris Buck , Jeff McErlain all came out with video about the Klon . Instead of the outrageous price of the Centaur being the whole subject matter , the great sound of the Centaur was demonstrated and so was the KTR . People ran to Reverb and the price went up on the KTR's . From $250 to $500-$600 . And it was going up slowly until here recently . Once word got out about dwindling supply of diodes , the price this week went from $700 to $945 . I will be honest . If I didn't have a KTR already I would probably try to buy one for this price . I love the sound so much that it makes my Fender amp sound like a $3K boutique amp . Thanks for the videos about this . I really enjoyed them .
